What Kind of Bike Fits You?

What Kind of Bike Fits You? Updated: Tuesday, 20 March 2007
When they say that ‘size doesn't matter', they were not thinking. Not really. When you're trying to get that perfect bike or ATV for yourself, size DOES matter – the size of the bike, size of the engine, size of the exhaust…etc. When buying a bike or ATV, it's almost like buying a pair of jeans – it's got to fit you JUST RIGHT. In fact, the bike that you get should make you so proud and happy that you'd grin just by thinking about it! Just like an individual person, there's no perfect bike that fits everyone because everyone requires a bike for very different reasons and everyone have different preferences, so, we can't tell you what kind of bike will fit you. But you can make your decision based on your own evaluation and my dear friends, evaluation is (if it's not, it should be) the biggest part of your shopping experience! For example, if your brother-in-law owns a KTM525 and he's been trying to get you to buy one of that for yourself, don't. Whatever fits him may not fit you because another person might be completely in love with his Honda CRF100F instead. Another man's meat might be another man's poison.

You'll need to consider the following:-

* Where are you going to ride the bike
* What's your bike riding skill level at?
* How tall and heavy are you?
* What is your budget like?
* Do you intend to make extensive modifications to your bike after buying it?

To understand how your body is built affects the way you should choose a bike, here's what some people said.

'I prefer the 250 because I am lighter, smaller and prefer Moto than anything else' – This is true, the way you're built and the type of activities that you like to indulge it makes a difference to the way you should pick your bikes. If you lived in areas where there are loads of mud, ruts, trees and obstacles to go through, you might want to get a 250 two-stroke instead.

'In areas where there are many obstacles and you've got to haul your bike around sometimes to get it over stuff, the 250 is best'. We agree and we even think that the 250 works great on tricky combo jumps and tight corner sections. You see, when you get a 250, you might even outdo the 450 if you know the bike well and know how to work it. Like we said, you need to know what you want to do with the bike in order to buy the perfect bike.

'The 250 gives me the most fun. The 250 bike is forgiving and practical…and it's not punishing on me…physically. Riding the 250 is just more fun '. More fun. Hhhhmmm….sounds fun already. It's also safer and easier to handle when you make a mistake as compared to something bigger and heavier. You'll pay a heavy price if you make a mistake on a 450. You can just lug it around and short-shift it whenever needed.

'The 450 does not cooperate with me during turns and in finesse and sticky situations'. The engine might be bigger but the sheer size of the machine might not be the best thing for people who have small built.

'The 250 is perfect for tracks but I intend to go for desert riding some time in the future, I may consider getting the 450 instead. And besides, I am physically bigger than most, so, it would be prudent for me to get something that could fit most situations for someone like me'. Nuff said. Well said. If your intention involves riding your bike somewhere other than just the tracks, you might have to weigh the odds a little bit more.
