Ride the Roy A Taylor ATV Trail at Sylva, North Carolina

Written by Raceway ATV - the #1 kids Kazuma ATV dealer
Ride the Roy A Taylor ATV Trail at Sylva, North Carolina Updated: Thursday, 06 September 2007

It’s tough trying to find an ATV trail that’s suitable for the whole family. When was the last time you took the whole family out for a fun family ATV outing without having to compromise either your or other family members’ needs? Anyway, it took us some time but one of our ATV enthusiasts chanced upon an ATV trail called Roy A Taylor ATV Trail System which he found in Sylva North Carolina. Indeed, United States is full of new, exciting and yet undiscovered ATV Trail Systems. If you have trouble searching for it on the Internet, we’re not surprised, try searching for Wayehutta instead. The $5 daily fee is well worth it. Wayehutta is managed by the U.S. Forest Service.

The ATV trail system is a 30-mile-long ATV Trail that loops catering to the needs of all types of ATV enthusiasts. Therefore, it is the perfect family ATV holiday destination. The great thing about Roy A. Taylor ATV Trail System is that the loop trail is very clearly marked telling ATVers the difficulty level so you know you won’t be going down the wrong road, so watch out for those indicators. If you’re going with other skilled ATVers, you can challenge yourself at some of the more challenging parts of the ATV trail. They’re mostly hard-packed clay, rocks, steep climbs…but the top of the mountain is worth the effort. Lots of opportunities for appreciating the view and fresh air. The great thing is that there is always some part of the ATV trail for the kids to enjoy or perhaps the less adventurous ATVers.

There’s a part of the ATV trail that says ‘do not enter’ because that part of the ATV trail is one-way-only. Hence, please follow the instructions and simply don’t enter. Overall, this ATV trail range from extremely easy to difficult. The difficult part of the ATV trail is reserved for those with more advanced skill level – don’t be surprised, although there aren’t many obstacles on this ATV trail, you might find the climbing of the mountain a little challenging even if you’re a veteran. The kids and those who wishes to remain on the easier side of the ATV trail can have some fun too.

Wayehutta can be found in Sylva through Highway 74 and Highway 23. once you’re at Sylva, head south and towards Cullowhee on Hwy 107. travel the same direction for approximately 4 miles. Keep an eye out for a sign that says Old Cullowhee just slightly North of Cullowhee and there will be a traffic light, take a left turn and go on for slightly more than a mile. You’’ see CR 109 as you head on towards Tackaseigee River Bridge. Take the Wayhutta road for approximately 2 miles or so…this is tricky but if you hit gravel, you’re on the right track.

The thing with this ATV trail is that there’s ample parking space but it will be a little difficult for large motor homes. However, other forms of vehicles and trailers should have problems finding parking here. Although you’re not to expect five-star hotels here, there’s a quaint little shelter house there that we used for quite a bit, a hand pump for well water, an information booth and (thankfully) a toilet.

The ATV trail is closed from between December 15th till March 31st. The reason for the closure is that it’s the mud season – if ATVs are allowed to travel around the ATV trail during mud season, irreparable damage may be done to the ATV trail.

There are rules to riding on this ATV trail:

•    ATVers must wear helmets and eye protection,
•    no passengers on ATVs unless the ATV is built for two,
•    no alcohol is permitted (I know, DARN!),
•    all ATVs must have spark arrestor,
•    those born after Jan 1 1990 must have ATV safety training certificate
•    and those under 16 must come with an adult,
•    no camping is allowed (5 miles up, there’s Sylva, so, no worries)

For more information on this ATV trail, you can try giving The Highlands Ranger District a call at (828) 526-3765. The map for this ATV Trail System can be found here. (pdf format)
