Kids ATV accidents are preventable

The rising number of accidents related to kids riding ATVs is alarming….scary, even. And we, as ATV enthusiasts, hate to read news about these accidents and how some people immediately come forward trying to ban ATVing for kids. Some go as far as to try to make ATV riding unlawful. Although we understand the merits of their arguments, we believe that is a better to lower down the accident rates instead.

In view of the rising number of ATV-related accidents, what should we do to protect our kids from contributing towards the disturbing statistics? Should we ban ATVing for our kids? Should we tell them that we do not want them to ride their ATVs anymore and sell it off? It is a dramatic and drastic measure to take, especially if your kids have begun to take ATVing seriously.

In all honesty, ATV riding for kids is dangerous but SAFE at the same time! You see, as with other types of vehicles, it can be dangerous and it’s unfair to point the finger at ATVing alone. People get into accidents on all kids on vehicles including bicycles, motorbikes, superbikes, dirt bikes, go-karts, cars, trucks…etc. Kids and adults alike get into accidents not because of the vehicle that they ride. They encounter mishaps because they either lack supervision, skill, concentration or all of the above. There are many reasons why people get into accidents on their ATVs and here are some.

The kids ride their adult ATVs
If you won’t put an eight-year-old kid behind the wheel, you don’t put a kid behind an adult ATV. It’s as simple as that. But irregardless of how many times we continue to say that and try our best to remind parents that adult ATVs are not made for children, you see a lot in the news. They don’t tell you the kind of ATV the kids were riding but if you dig a little deeper, the statistics tell a whole different story. Sometimes, the kids snuck a ride on their parents’ ATVs or the parents were not misjudged their kids’ ATV riding skills.

The kids were not wearing proper ATV protective apparel
We cannot predict when accidents will happen, but we can maximize protection to minimize the risk of serious (or fatal) injuries when they strike. This is the logic behind using as many ATV protective gears on your kids as possible. We cannot stress this important fact more.

The kids did not undergo proper ATV safety schooling
In a lot of trails, a certificate indicating that you’ve completed basic ATV safety riding course is necessary. The same rule should apply of kids on ATVs. Before the kids are allowed to ride their ATVs anywhere at all, they should be given proper training! Start on the right foundation and this will help them understand and remember how important it is to ride responsibly and safely.

This is particularly important for kids and youth because of their generally more impulsive nature. They, sometimes, lack the proper maturity to make decisions. And they’re more likely to react towards a senseless dare. Therefore, the best safety equipment for your kids is knowledge and sense of responsibility.
