California ATV trail - Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area

Written by Raceway ATV - the #1 kids Kazuma ATV dealer
California ATV trail - Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area Updated: Thursday, 06 September 2007

Says who there are no more good ATV trails to ride in California? We heard some people complain that they have to ride the same California ATV trail over and over again until they have to resort to riding their ATVs in kiddy parks and in their own yard. Have you heard of the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area? No? Well, now you have.

Anyway, we consider the Hungry Valley one of the most interesting California ATV trail we have ever had the pleasure of riding. The Sunny State sure has a lot of surprises for ATV enthusiasts like us. In fact, this is, for your information, the second largest ATV riding area under the California State Park’s Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division. If it was nothing else, this California ATV trail is definitely large…large enough that we don’t think you can finish riding all of the 19,000 acres in one day. All types of off-road vehicles are allowed here including ATVs, motorbikes, dune buggies and other types of 4x4s.

Through the 19,000 acres of land for you to ride your ATV in, there is about 130 miles of extremely beautiful scenery for you to enjoy…so, even if one is not an incredibly experienced in ATV riding, we promise you that you’ll have a smashing good time just being shutter-happy at this ATV trail. We strongly encourage all of you to ride in groups. This way, the less experienced ATV riders can ride together while the dare devils can go exploring together.

When we were there, we spoke to a couple of officials there and they emphasized the importance of staying on the right zone or trail. The explanation they gave was that the soil on this California ATV trail erodes very quickly and easily – therefore, the California ATV trail is divided into zones specifically allowing certain types of vehicles into the different zones. The free riding or open riding zone in this California ATV trail is open for anyone and they include hills, sand, flats and steep hill climbs too. You won’t run out of trail to ride on, one thing’s for sure.

You don’t have to worry about accommodation when riding this California ATV trail because with 2000 acres of camping zone, you can definitely find a spot to set up camp. And the camp sites are pretty well-equipped too although they don’t have running water there. Remember to bring your own clean water. Particularly important if you’re planning to ride this California ATV trail during summer time. The heat (90 to 100 degrees) can really get to you. We were warned about rattlesnakes, so, we feel it fit to put up the warning here. Camping here is perfectly fine but for those who prefer to book into hotels or motels, you can find some really cheap and clean ones in Lancaster and Palmdale. Not too far away…about 40 minutes or so, actually. Well, if you don’t mind an hour drive, you can get yourself to Los Angeles.

If you’re planning an ATV trip to this California ATV trail, bring the kids along because we saw that there was a small little one-acre mini track reserved for beginners and kids…those riding 90cc ATVs or even Peg Peregos! The kids and beginners can test out their own skill here – parental guidance is necessary because although it’s a track made for beginners, there are quite a few jumps, sharp turns and twists.

As usual, there are rules to riding this California ATV trail. A spark arrester, California off-highway ID plate and a valid California off-road vehicle registration is required. Needless to say, going helmet-less is a bug no-no and all ATV riders should be at least 18-years of age; otherwise, they should be accompanied by a grownup at all times. The speed limit set for this California ATV trail is 15mph whenever you’re on camping site.
