Let's Talk About RC Car Fuel Safety

The fuel for your RC car is usually nitromethane or more commonly called "nitro". It is highly flammable and while it can cause injury if mishandled, there are some very simple steps you can take for handling this fuel safely.

If you spill any nitro when you're filling up your RC, wipe up any spills promptly and put fuel soaked rags in a separate container away from any receptacles that someone could throw a cigarette into or a freshly used match. Either can cause a flash ignition. Simple separate disposal will eliminate this problem.

When you're racing at the track or even in your local parking lot, it is common to carry extra fuel in a quick fill bottle. Label your bottle in a way that doesn't look like anyone else's bottle so you don't get a different racer's fuel confused with your own. Not everyone runs the fuel you do and you could mistakenly put a mix into your tank that you never intended. Another great tip is to use color-coded bottles if you run various RCs at your track or lot. A separate fuel bottle for each RC will ensure no mix-ups.

Treat nitro with respect when you store it. If you wouldn't store gas in a certain place in your home, don't store nitro there either. Keep the container capped tightly to avoid evaporation and the introduction of any foreign matter or water. Either will make your fuel weak and ineffective. And those are just a few tips for handling your RC car's fuel wisely!
