Yamaha's Grizzly 700 vs. Many Others

Print E-mail

Yamaha's Grizzly 700 vs. Many Others Wednesday, 06 December 2006
When we first took a look at Yamaha's Grizzly 700, it didn't impress us. Why? More reasons than one. For something of this size, we, honestly and perhaps a little unfairly, expected it to fly. The Yamaha Grizzly 700 flew, of course, but just not as high as we thought it would and not as fast as we wanted it to. That's when we started rounding up other competitor ATVs to see how they fared against the Yamaha Grizzly 700. compared to other similar ATVs, the Yamaha didn't fare very well in the brakes, suspension and engine department.

but taking a look at the new Yamaha lineup now, we're forced to look at the Yamaha Grizzly again and in 2007, Yamaha seems to have taken steps to redeem itself. As Yamaha makes a move to capture the market again, so does its competitors like Honda, Arctic Cat and Can-Am. And we're inclined to make a little comparison over here.

The Yamaha Grizzly 700 is the most expensive of the lot With the same big engine and power, the Yamaha came out tops when it comes down to the number comparison. For the added power-steering, the Yamaha Grizzly 700 is going for $8,000 each. To decide whether the Yamaha Grizzly 700 is worth or not, you'll have to take your budget into consideration. The Hondas are not much cheaper with a small reduction of $200 off the shelf pricing while the cheapest of the lot is the Kawasaki Brute Force 650I which is selling for $7,100.

What's your weight again? On whether a heavy machine is better or a lighter one, it would depend on the situation. When an ATV is heavier, it is more stable while going through obstacles during a course. However, if it's light, it just flies. To handle a lighter ATV requires advanced skill levels. And another thing about the issue of weight is the loading and unloading part. It ain't much time hauling a large and heavy ATV around, we know. however, in sticky situations, while it could be easier to unstuck a light ATV from sticky situations, in certain muddy conditions, the added weight could be an advantage. Now, with that said, how does the Yamaha Grizzly 700 ATV fare against the others? It is the lightest at 635 pounds recorded while the Suzuki and Honda recorded 650 pounds.

On your way up Now w can go on to the engine specs. Honestly, we weren't expecting the Yamaha Grizzly 700 ATV to do any good here. Something to do with first impressions leftover from last year? maybe. But we gave it a fair shot. All the ATV engines were liquid cooled, comes with automatic transmission and have convenient electric starters (which we love, by the way). Among all, the Brute Force was one of the easiest one to use. When it comes to climbing hills, the Can-Am 650 left everyone behind while the Yamaha Grizzly 700 ATV's performance was mediocre.

Speeding up Frankly speaking, if these top class ATVs can go any faster, they'd better be sharing the runway with airplanes. We don't think ATVs need to be any faster than these machines that we've tried and looked at. But the more important thing is the reliability of these ATVs. We want longer-lasting ATVs with tires that won't easily go flat and other convenient features like compartments to place our miscellaneous personal items and spares. As for mileage per full tank is concerned, we think that all the ATVs performed rather well although the Can-Am ATV came out tops, the others weren't too far behind.

Overall, although the Yamaha Grizzly 700 is not the best in the lot on the surface of things, there are not many complaints against it either whereas there were many complaints about weak frame and suspension for the other ATVs. Perhaps…perhaps, the price tag is worth it after all.
