Old But Fast

Old But Fast Tuesday, 05 December 2006
Experience counts when it comes to ATV racing and this proven through the many older and yet experienced ATV racers who has been gathering awards and prices all year round but also garnering support and respect from much younger and fitter ATV racers who are supposedly better. If age was an important factor in ATV racing, teenagers would be reaping all the rewards while the ‘older' ATV racers would all be sitting by the sidelines sipping at their beer cans.

The level of difficulty in competing in ATV races has been on the rise year after year as more and more younger ATV racers pop into the scene to take the ATV scene into the next level. This does a lot of good for ATV fans because the standard for ATV racing escalates to an unrecognizable level year after year. 2006 has been a difficult year even for a veteran like Doug Gust. Gust admitted that the guys in the ATV scene are getting faster and faster and then better and better everyday. Racing ATV is no longer what it used to be, Gust admits.

Practice is the only way to get better, says veteran ATV racers. No matter how many classes you attend, the most important thing is to get as much practice as you can. Just get on your ATV and roar off! The other aspect of ATV racing emerges as we talk about how to be faster – how to be more consistent. These monster machines might be better than it used to be and if you owned one that simply kicked butt, it doesn't matter unless you prove yourself consistent. And the best way to get as much practice as possible is to buddy up to someone who's as keen on ATV racing as you are. No shortcuts. And you shouldn't even be looking for one either if you're at all serious about racing your machine!

Using the buddy system to your advantage Here's a tip from advanced ATV racers that could help you improve your ATV racing skills. Once you've found a buddy to ride ATV with, leverage on each other – compete and keep a tab on each other's performances. Record it, no matter how embarrassing it is. Staying satisfied and contented with whatever you've last recorded is the worst thing you can do if you want to be better. The buddy should push you forward – look at the record, register it, go out and push yourself and your ATV faster!

Does it matter whether it's a trail or a track? We'll admit it…there IS a difference between a trail and a track. A trail is somewhere you just enjoy riding ATV together with your friends and family. On the track, you're out for the kill! But the thing with good ATV racers is that every opportunity they get to get on their ATV, they grab it and do their best while they're at it! Most experienced ATV racers will tell you that although riding their ATVs on trails is not as exciting as they would like it to be, they continue to do it because it helps them understand their ATV better. You've got to believe that every time you get on a trail or track, your aim is either to maintain your standard or hike it up!

The start has become more important now than ever before You can have the best ATV on the planet but if you don't get a good start, you're in for a big struggle ahead, most experienced ATV racers believe. There are just too many fast guys out there! You just can't fight them if you're not ahead unless either they get unlucky or you get lucky. But when it comes to ATV racing, we hardly ever rely on luck. So, watch how the gate is falling before your moto. It would work to your advantage too if you are always on a lookout for telltale signs of what the other ATV racers might be up to after the 30-second card turns sideways that the gate hits the ground.

Yes, it could be something as simple as that – and yet, can you believe it, it makes a difference. And it is these little things that differentiate the big boys from the babies.

If you're looking for a better and faster ATV than the one you have stashed up in your garage gathering dust, look no further than Racewayatv! RacewayATV is the leading online ATV parts and ATV provider. Did we say experience counts? Yeah...that applies here.
