Brimstone Recreation Huntsville, Tennessee
You can literally do anything you want there. Sit around watching people, feeding the ducks, sleep, ride a horse, hike….and of course, you can bring your ATV and ride the trails! This is one of the things you can do in Huntsville Tennessee’s Brimstone Recreation Park. Suffice to say that this park was designed in such a way that anyone can have lots of fun there, be it kids or adults. I remember this park well because it was a great reprieve from office work. After hours of sitting around mulling over office issues, all of us rented an ATV each and headed out to Brimstone Recreation which is just 13 miles west of I-75 at exits 141 or 144, on Highway 63. Nature has been kind of this part of this north eastern part of Tennessee because the view is simply jaw-droppingly beautiful. I mean, it’s so stunning you can feel yourself being enveloped and embraced by the wind and sun. The shrill laughter of kids giddy with the joy of being outdoors and adults relaxing and working their muscles around the park is addictive.
All in all, there is about 45,000 acres of land for you to play around with, according to their website and there’s 300 miles of trails to ride on. Don’t even think of trying to ride all of it in one day…it’s not possible! If you want to enjoy everything that this ATV park has to offer, you’d better mark off a couple of days from your calendar for this trip. Ideally, I would choose a weekend and a Monday. The highlight is the ATV trail, of course, but for those hungry for adventure, there are lots of other side trails that they don’t map out on the maps. You can grab the maps at the entrance. I am telling you…the side trails can be loads of fun as well but just be prepared for the unexpected.
As far as difficulty level is concerned, there are ‘piece-of-cake parts’ and there are ‘kick-ass’ parts of the ATV trail. Take a look at the map and see which parts of the trail you want to hit…it is a big concern especially if you have inexperienced ATV riders amongst you. You could be going through dry patches of sand and then getting over difficult obstacles and then wallowing in mud the next. On the map, you’ll see that parts of the trail are colored red, blue and green. Green parts are for beginners, blue ones are moderate…the red ones, what can I say? They’re the killer ones. On the map, the management’s marked down all the interesting sites that you can visit. Some of them are historical sites of interest and it gives you lots of picture-taking opportunities. Snap away!
Since it’s not possible to finish riding this ATV trail in a day, I recommend camping out in the wild during your trip there. They allow camping only at certain parts of the trail – heed their advice because it’s for your own safety and convenience. If you have a large group, they have this place for primitive camping called the Half Cabin…interesting place for camping. It’s not too far from the office (thank goodness!) so if there are emergencies or if someone decides to chicken out, it’s just 15 minutes away.
All the restaurants and modern amenities are located nearby in Huntsville while there are comfortable places to bunk in including hotels and motels of varying prices. As we were passing the office, I saw ATV rentals available too at Cumberland Safari.
This recreational area’s got everything a man can ask for and I would definitely be planning another trip here if time permits (hint hint! I need a holiday!) and besides for $15 a day $25 for a weekend or $50 for a year’s permit, this is a darn cheap way to take yourself away from the daily doldrums of life.
