4-Wheeling Fun at Perry State Forest
16 miles of 4-wheeling fun is waiting for you at Perry State Forest. This is a great place to ride and has a riding season that is open from April 1 through November 30 of each year.
During the early and late parts of the riding season, there is a good possibility that you will encounter snow. Snow is slick and slippery, use the utmost in care when taking your 4-wheeler over snowy terrain.
This entire area was once used for strip mining, so the terrain is rough and rugged and absolutely perfect for taking your 4-wheeler over. As in the other State Forests in Ohio, The riding season overlaps the hunting season. If you choose to ride your 4-wheeler during hunting season, be sure to wear your bright orange vest to allow hunters to distinguish you from game from a good distance. You will also need a permit to ride. You will be given a sticker that must be placed in a visible area on your 4-wheeler in order to ride. Before issuing the riding permit, your 4-wheeler will be inspected by park rangers to make sure you have a spark arrestor and noise muffler installed.

Leaving No Trace Camping
When you spend a weekend with your friends riding your 4-wheelers, camping is often part of a long weekend of riding the trails. When camping, the optimum thing to strive for is to leave no trace-- that simply means that you leave the area the way it was when you got there. Showing no signs that you have ever been there.
You can do this by learning some basic principles when going camping. Plan your trip carefully, if you're staying on land managed by the National Forest Service or the Bureau of Land Management in a particular state, talk to the rangers that manage that area, they can give you tips on the best places to stay, animals you might encounter, possible closures due to forest fire or other natural hazards and other good information that will increase the enjoyment of your camping outing.
If you're not riding your 4-wheelers and you decide to hike, stay on the trails and walk in a single file. This keeps everything, on each side of the trail, just as it was. Stay alert for any changes in the trail, such as rocks, sandy areas, mud or puddles of water.
Choose your campsite carefully. You want it to be at least 200 ft. from a water source and the trails. Your cooking area should be about 200 ft. from your sleeping area. Keep your garbage picked up at all times, it is easier to clean up if you put it away as it happens and additionally and garbage attracts forest critters, especially raccoons and bears. Most campers bring a sack in with them to pick up all refuse. Take the least amount of items that you leave you with garbage after use. If you see anything that does not belong, throw it away in a bag that you brought with you and take it out with you when you leave.
Leaving no trace camping is easy with a little preparation and you're leaving the campsite ready for the next person to enjoy!

What Size 4-Wheeler Should I Buy for My Child?
If your child is ready to ride a 4-wheeler, then it might be time to consider getting him or her their own 4-wheeler to ride. If your child has the maturity to make good choices for their own safety such as always wearing their safety gear and has the ability to watch out for other 4-wheeler riders when riding, they are ready for their own 4-wheeler.
It's very important that your child ride a 4-wheeler made for their particular size. A 4-wheeler that is too small for your child isn't safe and a 4-wheeler that is too powerful can get away from your child and cause injury to themselves or others.
Choosing the correct size 4-wheeler for your child isn't hard and you just need to consider the following:
If your child is age 6 and older - choose a 4-wheeler under 70cc. If your child is age 12 to 16 - choose a 4-wheeler in the range of 70cc-90cc. If your child is age 16 and older- choose a 4-wheeler over 90cc.
It is usually recommended that children under 6 do not ride 4-wheelers and no child should ever ride their 4-wheeler unsupervised. A great way to jumpstart your child on the road to good, safe 4-wheeling habits is to enroll them in a local riders safety course.
When your child is learning to ride their 4-wheeler, use the speed governor and lower the speed of your child's 4-wheeler down to 5MPH to help them build confidence in themselves and also make their 4-wheeler easy to handle and navigate.
