Arizona ATVing Destination: Tonto National Forest

Looking for a challenging ride? Arizona has a location that will provide a true ATV riding adventure for you and your favorite group of riding buddies. The Tonto National Forest provides perfect western ATVing fun. The two main ATVing areas in which to ride are Rolls OHV area and Bulldog Canyon.

Both riding areas are chock full of rocky grounds to test your climbing and maneuvering skills upon. These trails are not for beginning ATVers. The riding area is designated for 4 wheel drive vehicles. This means you will not have to share the road with cyclists or 2-wheel drive vehicles. The only people you will meet will be other ATVers.

Rolls OHV area is one area that was specifically established for ATVers. It is a huge area of 27,000 acres. Here you can ride your ATV while enjoying the Arizona wildlife, warm weather and beautiful sunsets.

The second area dedicated to ATV riding is the Bulldog Canyon. This area is where you can truly show your ATV handling skills. Bulldog Canyon is meant for experienced riders and can be very challenging. This ride will take you through the majestic Goldfield Mountains and travel through the Sonoran Desert. The entire ride is rough and rocky.

Tonto National Forest ATV traveling requires that you travel smart. Drink plenty of water when you're riding your ATV and pack along extra to keep yourself hydrated during your ride. Map your ride before you go so you can plot the best ride for yourself.

Tonto National Forest is a place every ATV enthusiast should visit, the riding areas are bar none one of the most challenging in the state and a definite feather in your ATV riding cap to complete!

Protect Your Young Riders with a Thor Youth Full Roost Helmet

Thor has designed a full roost helmet for your young rider. This helmet is awesomely designed to be lightweight with its ABS/Polycarbonate alloy shell that won't cause rider fatigue, the number one cause of injury and it has a fully padded chin bar. The vented adjustable visor reduces annoying helmet lift that happens when riding.

Not only is this helmet lightweight, it is comfortable with a padded chin strap, the brushed nylon interior, and the D-ring retainer strap keeps your helmet exactly how the rider prefers to wear it on their head. This helmet also comes with the DOT certification as with all Thor helmets so you can know you're buying a cool looking helmet that is also very safe.

It also comes with removable, washable cheek pads. There are also optional sized cheek pads that offer up custom fit for this helmet. The rubber google grabbers on each side of the eye port of the Thor Youth Full Roost helmet give good grab for the goggles and keep them in place, allowing better vision when riding, including peripheral vision.

The Thor Youth Full Roost helmet is available in the following color combinations: Blue/Black, Silver/Black, Yellow/Black, Lime/Black, and Red/Black. Also, measuring for a helmet doesn't have to be a pain, just use a cloth measuring tape and it's easy. Simply measure around the largest part of the child's head.

Youth Size Helmet Fit Chart:
Youth Small: 6 5/8 - 6 3/4 Hat Size (20 7/8 - 21 1/4 in);
Youth Medium: 6 3/4 - 6 7/8 Hat Size (21 1/4 - 21 5/8 in);
Youth Large: 6 7/8 - 7 Hat Size (21 5/8 - 22 in).

For great fit, comfort and protection when riding, a Thor Youth Full Roost helmet fits the bill for your young rider.

If You'd Like to Get into Motocross

Motocross is a wildly popular sport and getting started in this fun activity isn't as hard as you think. Motocross is considered an extreme sport and for good reason, it can be dangerous sport for someone who overestimates their riding skills or handling ability of their motorcycle. It takes time to learn and a lot of practice to obtain experience and skill in handling your motorcycle.

First of all, you need a bike. The motorcycles themselves are special. They have highly knobbed tires for excellent grip on the terrain. Most of these bikes feature water cooled engines and front and rear disc brakes. Raceway has a fantastic selection of bikes.

This is a sport that can be enjoyed by kids as young as 7. If you feel your child is mature enough to handle the responsibility of riding a motocross bike, let them! They will learn responsibility, watching out for others, anticipating the consequences of actions, and planning ahead along with good sportsmanship.

Without a doubt, the most popular form of motocross is called Supercross. This sport originated in America and has spread all over the world. Supercross takes place in enclosed stadium with various heats leading up to a face off between the final two.

If you want to get going in motocross, simply watch the papers and see when a manufacturer or riding organization is holding a training session or even a try out. Another good way is to join a club. Motocross is a great sport and if you're ready to get in on this popular activity, check out some races, join a club and meet a group of like-minded people that love to do what you do- ride motocross!

ATVing at the Oahe Downstream Recreation Area

The Oahe Downstream ATV Area has roughly 400 beautiful acres of lush, hilly grassland, breathtaking river bluff and vegetated shale slopes that you are free to roam in and explore with your ATV. When riding in the ATV/ ORV area, ATVs do not have to be licensed, and vehicles do not have to have a park entrance license either. Riding is permitted only on the designated areas inside the ATV/ ORV area.

Remember, while the Oahe Downstream ATV/ ORV Area doesn't require your ATV to be licensed or have a park entrance license, all of the other parks in South Dakota do. Lets go over some of the rules for riding your ATV in South Dakota: All people riding on ATVs have to be at least 14 years of age, or have a valid driver's license. Visitors to the park can only ride their ATVs on the designated park roads in South Dakota state parks and on the recreation areas or in the state ORV/ ATV area. ATV riders are not allowed to ride their ATVs on paved trails or on beaches or shorelines.

You will be required to wear eye protection while on public/park roads unless your ATV has a sturdy windshield, and all riders under 18 must legally wear a helmet while in the parks. Also, every ATV has to be equipped with a functional mirror, horn, headlight, brakes, brake lights and a license plate.

Camping is available at three campgrounds in the Oahe Downstream Recreation area, which feature 206 campsites with electricity, and four camping cabins that are equipped with wheelchair accessories for the disabled. But camping and ATV riding aren't the only things that you can do while at the Oahe Downstream Recreation Area. There is also a swimming beach; 9-hole golf course and you can enjoy hiking and even a volleyball court. If you prefer, take your ATV to one of the many fishing holes and enjoy a freshly caught trout dinner after a great day of ATVing.

Should You Wear Boots When Riding an ATV?

Riding an ATV or motorcycle is a ton of fun, but you also need to protect your body in every way you can is essential. You already know that you need to wear a helmet, riding gloves, and goggles and you know exactly why you need those items when you ride. Have you thought about the footwear that you should be wearing when you ride?

Riding boots are the best protection for your feet, ankles, and lower legs. These type of boots are specifically designed to protect your feet, ankles, shins, and lower legs from flying debris such as rocks, branches, sticks and sometimes even other vehicles. Motocross boots are stiffly designed to protect you against foot movements of the foot and ankle that wouldn't occur naturally. The boot will attempt to stop your foot and ankle from turning in awkward directions and thereby save you from a break should you take a spill or an impact when riding your bike.

One great example for wearing proper riding boots is if you run into a stationary object such as a tree stump or a log. These can seriously hurt your leg or foot if not properly protected. You might get a bruise if you hit one of these objects when wearing a good pair of riding boots, however if you're not adequately protecting your legs and feet, you could fracture that area on impact. The cost of a trip to the emergency room plus the time out to heal will make a good pair of riding boots well worth the cost.

A good rule of thumb many ATV and motorbike riders use is to dress for an impact. If it doesn't happen, terrific! If it does, you'll be more than protected and ready for anything. Get the best protection for your legs and feet when you ride and when you purchase your riding boots from Raceway - shipping directly to your door is absolutely free of charge.

Get Safety Instruction For Your New Motorcycle

If you have recently acquired a motorcycle for yourself or your child, you'll want to make sure that rider safety courses are taken. There are a good many different options available to motorcycle riders that can give instruction as well as many safety tips to help out along the way. Even if you are already a seasoned rider, you could also take a course to help sharpen your skills.

Finding a Safety Instruction Course is usually easy. One of the things that many riders will do when looking for a school is check the telephone book. This is a good option, especially if you may have heard about certain schools or courses within your area and you are just unsure where to start. With the technology today, many people will go to the Internet as well to help them out. Simply Google your city and state and look up "rider safety instruction". Not only can you use the internet to find locations of classes within your area, some people may even find that they can take some of the courses that they are searching for right on their home computer. To get knowledge about riding their motorcycle before they set foot into a class.

Many people do not realize that they can also call the local highway patrol in their area to find these classes. The state troopers department can be a great resource for finding some of the best motorcycle training schools in your area. Often times, the schools that they will refer you to are also the most reasonably priced as well.

Make safety your number one priority when riding and teach your children to be a safe as possible when riding their motorcycle. Additionally, check you're your local bureau of motor vehicles, your state may require safety classes before you are allowed to get a riding permit.

Does Pittsfield State Forest Allow ATVs?

A big resounding "Yes!" Pittsfield State Forest in western Massachusetts was previously closed to ATV riding as there had been severe damage done to many trail systems by irresponsible riding practices. Trails are now open and available for riding in this state forest but there are a few rules you will need to follow. This is a great place to ride your ATV and there are over 9,500 acres of wilderness land to explore. There are not only lushly forested groves of Red Maple and Red Oak trees, there are streams, waterfalls, and lots of flowering shrubs. There are 65 acres alone of wild azaleas that give off pink blooms in the spring. If you happen to be riding your ATV in this area during the month of June, bring your camera, as this is a beautiful spot for a photograph.

While out ATVing, you might come across Berry Pond. This is another very picturesque place, it being one of the highest natural water bodies in Massachusetts at 2,150 feet. These are multi-use trails like most of the state forest riding areas in Massachusetts, be on the lookout for other ATVers, horseback riders, the occasional hunter if it is hunting season, and mountain bikers. The forest service does not require fees for riding these trails at this time, however they do require that you wear your helmet at all times and no one under the age of 16 is allowed to ride alone.

Pittsfield State Forest offers up a great weekend of riding your ATV, there's no way to cover it all in one weekend, but you can have a great time with your family and friends trying!

Don't Get A Fine Riding An ATV In Osceola National Forest

Florida's Osceola National Forest has nearly two hundred thousand acres of original Florida lands that are waiting to be explored on your ATV.

However, there are wetlands located within the Osceola National Forest and if you go off-trail and explore these areas on your ATV you will get a hefty fine and in some cases the fine can rival the cost of your ATV!

The forest rangers will also fine you if you ride these areas and you fail to get a riding permit or you are caught riding your ATV on these trails without a helmet. You may not ride your ATV off trail in any wilderness areas or the Florida National Scenic Hiking Trail. If you are going to be in a campgrounds, picnic sites, and other developed areas, your ATV needs to be on a trailer or carried by other means of transportation when entering or leaving the area.

If your ATV is properly licensed, you can ride on any of the designated trails in this forest. The ATV trails are marked clearly by red-posted signs. The trails in this area rated easy to moderate and offer very few challenges to even the beginner ATV rider. If you're looking for a natural ride that is easy and fun, the Osceola National Forest is the ride you're looking for!

October Mountain State Forest ATV Trail Riding Fun

Looking for a new place in Massachusetts to ride your ATV? Bring your ATV to October Mountain, where the trails are calling your name. This is the largest state forest in Massachusetts, with 16,127 acres of forest fun.

This place is full of beauty and serene places; bring your camera along for the ATV ride! The trails are for any skill level of ATVer, from beginner to most experience. The terrain is filled with slopes and hills, twists and turns. There is a ton of fun to be had on these ATV trails. Along with riding the trails on your ATV, you can camp here too. There are 46 sites that extend into the forest and off the ATV trails. You will even come across the famous Appalachian Trail that history has told us so much about.

There are speed limits posted on the trails, as they are multi-use and very busy during the warmer months of the year. Additionally, stay on the designated trails as the rangers can and will write you a citation that will make your pocketbook go "Ouch" if you get caught trailblazing.

Do a complete maintenance check on your ATV before your run. You want it in tip-top shape, so you can enjoy the ATV ride and not worry about the machine. Oil check, plugs, and tire check are all a necessity. Be sure that a helmet is worn at all times; it's a requirement to ride on these ATV trails.

Take Your ATV to Ocala National Forest

Ocala has been undergoing some big changes in their ATV riding areas. Nearly 8,300 acres located in the southwest portion of the forest have been closed to ATV riders as the trails are being allowed to reclaim themselves. The Forest created additional trails for your riding pleasure - be certain to get the most currently available map to plot your ride so you don't attempt to ride your ATV over the now closed areas.

Ocala has some excellent ATVing. The sights to see are many and the ATV trails are rated from easy to challenging. No matter what your riding skill level on your ATV, there is a great ride waiting for you here.

This is a huge area to ride your ATV in; there is no way to see it all in a day or even a long weekend of ATVing with your friends. The trails are open from dawn til dusk and if you are riding in the early morning or early evening hours, you are sure to see some of the local wildlife residents such as deer.

ATVs and motorcycles are allowed on these trails so be aware that other riders will be on them with you. They are one-way trails and there is little room in many areas for passing. The trails themselves are lushly foliaged and some areas are so dense the trees will block out the sunlight from above.

There is only a $6 fee for parking and those fees go towards the continued maintenance of the ATV trail systems. If you choose to make a long weekend out of riding this area, camping is available but there is no shower or water located at the campsites.

Should You Use a Motorcycle GPS?

If you're wondering if a GPS can improve your ride, the answer is a resounding "Yes". A motorcycle GPS is a brilliant invention that helps riders know exactly where they are at all times so that they do not get lost during their riding trips. Not only can a conventional rider use this, but many off road riders love to use them as well. A motorcycle GPS can give any rider the freedom of plotting their own course for riding right from their home computer.

This can be great for the motorcycle rider who is getting tired of riding on some of the same old trails and paths time and time again. All you have to do to start with is go through and pick your new trails for your trips from your computer.

The next step is taking your motorcycle GPS unit and downloaded all of your chosen routes. You take your convenient hand held unit with you on your trips and use your downloaded trails to guide you along. This can make for some truly amazing rides in all new terrain! Just make sure where you ride allows you to trail blaze and ride off designated trails on your motorcycle or ATV.

Imagine the possibilities! Not only are you able to use your hand held motorcycle GPS unit to choose some really amazing, new trails that you can explore, you also have the added bonus of help when you are lost. If you've ever had a map get lost or destroyed on a ride and gotten lost on a trail, you will fully appreciate how a GPS unit can save the day.

Riding at the Fort Ripley ATV Trail

If you like a rough and ready ride on your ATV, check out the Fort Ripley ATV Trail. This is a wonderful place to bring your ATV, as it is full of riding challenges.

The riding areas vary in their times they are available to ride your ATV on. The southern section of this ATV trail is open all year long, but the northern section is only open from April 1 to November 1 every year depending on the weather.

It is a great place to ride your ATV, as gorgeous pine and oak trees surround the area. It has rough terrain and some steep slopes and winding turns in the trail that will make following this ATV ride a blast. This trail is nearly 23 miles in length; so make sure you and your ATV are prepared. Do a pre-ride inspection and do a complete check up, from the oil to tightening any loose bolts. The tires on an ATV get a lot of abuse; so check the air pressure and the tread.

You are likely to encounter snow in the early and late parts of the ATV riding season in the northern section of the Ripley Trails. If you haven't maneuvered your ATV in snowy conditions before, make sure an experienced ATVer is along to show you the ropes, it isn't hard but it does take care. Fort Ripley will offer up a full weekend of ATVing fun for you and your favorite group of riding pals - put on your gear, check your ATVs and get ready for a great ride on your ATV!

Breaking in Your Motocross Boots

Motocross boots are a very necessary piece of equipment when you ride your motocross bike. There are a number of different types of dirt bike & motocross boots made and you need to find the right pair for the type of riding that you do most.

Motocross Boots often look very futuristic and have hard shells around the most common impact areas, normally around the foot and calf. If you like to race motocross or you do a lot of serious off-road riding, these are the boots for you. Investing in a good pair of motocross boots is cheap insurance compared to the price of an emergency room visit and being laid up with a broken leg.

Off Road & Dual Sport Boots are great alterative choices if you don't want to wear motocross boots. Most of these type of riding boots have the features you need for riding off-road such as steel toes, shifter and shin padding, waterproof material and a strong, impact resistant design.

After you purchase your new boots from Raceway, it's a snap to break them in. First, wear them and walk around in your new boots. Another good way to loosen them up for wear is to put a heavy coat of mink oil on your boots and put them in the oven at about 150 degrees for roughly one hour. The oil will be absorbed into the boot and become very pliable.

Another good way is if you're itching to get out of the house. Just put on your new boots and take them for a long ride on your motorcycle. It's a long way to break them in, but definitely one of the most fun!

Get Helmet Accessories at Raceway ATV

You know that helmets are the most important part of your safety equipment that you can wear when you ride but did you know that Raceway ATV also carries accessories for your ATV or motorcycle helmet?

Thor has made accessories for each of their helmets that Raceway ATV currently sells on their website. You can purchase Thor EXT Helmet Accessory Kit and the EXT Chrome Helmet Accessory Kit which both come with Colored Visor, 3 Mouth Vent, & 4 Small Vents. The available colors are blue, red, black, yellow, pink, baby blue, and dragon.

Thor Force Helmet Liner is a great thing to have. Liners get a lot of wear and hopefully get washed often enough too. If they don't, simply replace it and vow to be better about keeping your helmet liner clean. The Thor Force Helmet Liner fits in your helmet quickly and snugly and gives you an extra barrier against sweat and a comfortable fit when you're wearing your Thor helmet.

Thor EXT Cheek pads come in handy if you ride a lot of rough tracks. Your helmet, even a well fitted one, can vibrate and move when you're riding. Check pads cushion the helmet and give it padding so it isn't riding down on your face and disrupting your vision or your ride. Cheek pads are also available for the Thor Force line of helmets.

Proper and Safe Hauling Your ATV

With warmer weather upon us, you might be looking to ride some new trails you haven't explored before on your ATV instead of sticking close to home. This will involve hauling your ATV to the location and there are some good ways to haul your ATV that don't involve a lot of extra work on your part.

A tilt-bed trailer is one great way. They generally weigh about 300 lbs. and can haul over 1500 lbs but are usually more than adequate for your needs of getting your ATV to a new riding location.

If you ride with a buddy or a spouse, you might want to get a doublewide ATV trailer, which comes 6' X 8 'instead of the 4' X 8', single. The double ATV trailer can carry two ATVs.

The material used to construct these ATV trailers varies greatly. They come in aluminum, steel, and some are even covered. Aluminum ATV trailers are recommended because they are lighter which, with gas prices as they are presently, makes them the better choice for better gas mileage. This type of metal does bend more, so keep that in mind when loading and unloading your ATV's.

If you want durability, go with a steel trailer. It will hold up better, is a stronger metal, but it will rust and should be treated, especially if the trailer will be stored out of doors or will experience a lot of wet and cold weather conditions.

A covered trailer for your ATV is usually the most expensive choice but will provide you with security when you are not around. You will also not have to load and unload them every time you decide to take your ATV's out for some fun.

Now that you know the basics, get yourself an ATV trailer and explore some new riding destinations - happy hauling!

Kid Safety On Go Quad Go Carts

Go carts are a ton of fun for your kids, but you also want to make sure that they have their fun safely. It can be dangerous if you just turn your kids loose on a go cart without proper instructions for safe operation and the understanding they are operating a vehicle, albeit not a car or truck, but a vehicle none the less and they need to observe some basic common sense and safety rules to insure they and everyone around them has a great time.

First of all, make sure you and your kids know your go cart, take a little time and read the owners manual and get familiar with the operation of your cart.

Next, before you let your kids get on a go cart, make sure they are wearing an approved helmet, eye protection, and protective clothing. Don't use an old helmet. A helmet is good for one impact only. If you have a helmet that has been handed down or might have been dropped from a good height, always err on the side of caution and get your young go cart driver a new helmet.

Clothing should be fitted and not loose. Make sure any long hair is pulled back and better yet, tucked into the collar of your shirt or jacket. Serious injuries can result from loose clothing, shoelaces or long hair getting trapped in the moving parts of a go cart. Always tell your child to be properly seated in the go cart before starting the engine.

Go carts can be a lot of fun for your kids if you just teach them to follow a few simple safety rules and always be aware of what is going on around them.

Go Vroom at Croom ATV and Motorcycle Riding Area

This is a fun place to bring your ATV or motorcycle in Florida. This area was established in 1973 for people to have a designated place to ride their favorite fun machines that was not part of the Florida Wetlands and this is still the only designated state managed property solely designated for motorcycle and ATVers.

There are nearly 2,600 acres for you to ride your ATV and motorcycle on and the trails are marked with their skill level necessary for riding. The trails themselves range in difficulty from the very easy to the very challenging.

As of July 1, 2005 annual permits are required for each motorcycle and ATV using the Croom Motorcycle Area. The annual permits are good for riding your ATV the entire year (July through the following June). Additionally, riders without valid riding permits will no longer be allowed to ride the Croom Area. The fees for these permits are directed towards the upkeep and management of the trail system and riding areas.

If you want to make a long weekend of riding your ATV or motorcycle at the Croom Area, there is overnight camping available at the Croom Motorcycle Area Campground. There is a nominal fee for camping, but there are electrical hookups and full restroom facilities.

If you're looking for a new riding challenge or you just want a great ATVing vacation with your family, check out Croom ATV and Motorcycle Riding Area and have a great time exploring this fun destination!

Beartown State Forest ATVing Fun

Beartown State Forest is a thrilling ATV run to make. It is equally good to ride in the summer and winter, as the riding becomes a challenging ride in both seasons.

The Beartown State Forest is located in western Massachusetts. Just take the turnpike to exit 2. From there go to route 102 west to route 7. Follow that till you come to route 23. Go east to Monterey, and then follow the brown signs.

Beartown has just over 16 miles of rugged, undeveloped terrain for you to explore on your ATV. This is the third largest state forest in the state of Massachusetts.

The riding challenges here are many. There are slopes that drop sharply into a valley below; you will see many kinds of trees including the resident Red Oak and the Red Maple. Beyond the trees there is a pond located at about the 3-mile mark on the trail. If you park your ATV and walk through the trees about 100 yards, you can see where the beavers have made a once swamp pit into a lovely beaver pond.

These are much-used multi-use trails, so be on the lookout for other riders, mountain bikers, hikers, and other ATV riders. Beartown is a great place to spend the day on your ATV, the scenery and challenging trails make this one great ATV ride!

Motocross Eye Protection

Once you've found the perfect helmet at Raceway for your motocross riding, next you will need to choose good eye protection. Contrary to what you may have been told, a full-face visor on your helmet, although it helps to repel debris, is not protection for your eyes.

Small rocks and debris can be thrown in the air by other vehicle's tires - also called "roosted" - and fly through the air with a high velocity of speed and if they happen to get lodged in your eye, it can damage or even destroy your vision. Even if no damage is done, the impact can cause a momentary lapse in sight that can cause an accident. Goggle design has come a very long way in the past few years to include lighter weight, better sealing and much more comfortable goggles to wear when you're riding.

Always opt for a pair of goggles to insure that your eyes are completely protected from wind, dust, dirt, rain, insects and debris thrown from other riders around you.

Raceway has a good selection of goggles that are made from a good, thick plastic that is shatterproof and keep them as scratch-free as possible. Make sure if you wear eyeglasses or sunglasses that your goggles can accommodate your eyewear. Also, goggles should give you good peripheral vision.

Many riding goggles have facial fitting systems built in now so they create an airtight seal to the rider's face so no dust or debris can get under the seal of the goggle while also allowing ventilation to prevent fogging of the goggles. Always check your goggles before you ride for major scratches and imperfections in the sealing material around the edges, you don't want to get out on the track and discover you have a problem.

Comfortable Riding is Safe ATV and Motorcycle Riding

If you're distracted when you're riding your ATV or motorcycle by uncomfortable clothing, check out the selection of great riding pants at Raceway. Wearing a pair of really comfortable pants can make all the difference between a good ride and an amazing ride. In addition to wearing a good pair of riding pants, you may also want to think about some other tips and ideas that can keep your riding along through the terrain or down the road in sheer comfort.

Many riders do however know a good secret to keep their behind from getting chafed on long, rough rides. Nothing is worse at the end of the day than feeling the effects of all of the bumps that hammered your rump while you were out on your motorcycle or ATV. The best way to protect your fanny is by sprinkling a little powder inside of your riding shorts. This can help with the chafing as well as keep you as dry as can be while you are on a motorcycle or ATV ride!

If you are going to be riding about in some pretty chilly weather or at altitudes where the temperature may drop, you may want to think about trying to layer up your clothing a bit. Many riders do not realize that it is actually a pretty good idea to throw on a pair of long pants made with polyester underneath another pair of riding pants. By doing this, you can end up staying warmer because the polyester brings the humidity away from your body. The last thing that you want is to feel a sticky, cold layer of sweat on your body when you are riding on your motorcycle or ATV.

Rules and Regulations for Riding Your ATV

If you're going to be riding your ATV in the South Dakota State Parks, it is important that you know an abide by the rules and regulations that the park enforces. The first of these rules is that park visitors must license both South Dakota and out-of-state ATVs. You must also obtain a valid park entrance license to enter the parks as well. If your ATV is not licensed, or doesn't have a park entrance license, then the ATV must stay in the truck or the trailer that you brought it in. Also, every ATV has to be equipped with a functional mirror, horn, headlight, brakes, brake lights and a license plate.

All people riding on ATVs must be at least 14 years of age, or possess a valid driver's license. Visitors to the park can only ride their ATVs on the designated park roads in South Dakota state parks and on the recreation areas or in the state ORV/ ATV area. ATV riders are not allowed to ride their ATVs on paved trails or on beaches or shorelines. You must wear eye protection while on public/park roads unless your ATV has a sturdy windshield, and all riders under 18 must legally wear a helmet while in the parks.

The only exception to any of these rules is when you are riding at the Oahe Downstream ORV/ ATV area, which does not require ATVs to be licensed, and doesn't require a park entrance license either. However, all other rules and regulations apply while in this area, and riding is permitted only on the designated areas that are inside the ATV area.

What Type of Pants Should You Wear to Ride Your ATV or Motorcycle?

Are you looking to get a good pair of quality pants to wear when you are out and about on your motorcycle or ATV? There are a bunch of great styles out there that are made with the comfort and safety of the rider in mind. Because there are different styles to choose from, you may want to know some of the differences before you go and make the actual purchase.

Dual sport and over the boot pants are great for when you are hitting some different terrain on your ATV. Even when you are riding on a motorcycle, pants like these are a comfortable way to protect yourself from all of the elements. The over the boot design is geared toward keeping the muck out of your boots, making for a much more comfy ride.

If you are going to be riding during the winter months or you are traveling to ride in a colder climate, you should look into a pair of cold weather or winter pants. Pants such as these are specifically designed to keep you toasty and warm while you are out on your ATV or motorcycle.

Most riding pants also have the added convenience of keeping you dry as well when you are bolting through some of the slushier areas. These pants are also made with some extra room in them so you do not feel squished in any way, making it easy for you to be able to move and maneuver as you normally would.

ATV and Motorcycle Riding Gloves - Since Good Grip is Very Necessary

There are two main reasons that riding gloves are worn. The first is to protect your hands in case of an accident. The other reason is to provide good grip on the handlebars and prevent accidents like that from happening, especially in deteriorated weather conditions.

If you ride an ATV or Motorcycle, the palms of your gloves will be very important, since when you take a spill natural human reaction is to spread your palms and attempt to break your fall. This will lead to a major case of road rash on your hands if you aren't protecting your hands with a good pair of motorcycle or ATV gloves.

For either type of riding, flexibility is an important concern. You need to be able to grip your handlebars tightly for good steering control and you need to be able to have lever control. Check out the styles of riding gloves available at Raceway and you will notice not only are they made of lightweight materials, many have pre-curved fingers to insure a good grip.

Previous styles of riding gloves had fingers that would bunch and prohibit the rider from getting the best grip possible on the handlebars of their ATV or motorcycle.

Keeping your hands warm is a job most good riding gloves will do for you. Thor makes some great gloves in their line for this purpose that are well within anyone's price range.

Storing Your Motocross Bike

Even though riding season is just gearing up for most people, at the end of this year's season, you'll need to know how to properly store your motocross bike for the winter. Knowing how to store you motocross bike correctly is one of the best ways to prolong the life of your bike. Improper storage is one of the most mechanically degrading things you can do to your motocross bike. If you take the time to store your bike correctly, it will be ready to go in tip-top shape each riding season.

First, make sure you have a place to store your motocross bike. A dry basement or a garage that has no leaks are some of the best places to store your bike during the time you won't be riding.

Next, empty the oil. It's easy to do, simply warm up your engine and drain the oil out. When the reservoir is completely drained, refill with fresh, clean oil. Next, you will want to remove the battery. Put a stack of newspapers under the battery as they can and do leak on rare occasions and as you know, battery acid is a corrosive. Plan for the unexpected and you won't have a mess to clean up.

The next step is to remove each spark plug and put engine oil into each cylinder. Replace the spark plugs and make sure they are replaced tightly. The last thing you need to do engine-wise is to drain the gas tank and carburetor bowls.

You can protect the exterior of your motocross bike by waxing anywhere the bike is painted. This not only protects your paintjob from the elements, it also keeps it bright. Prop your bike's back wheel on a cinder block. Make sure it is not making direct contact with the ground. Cover your bike with a tarp; one made for cars is ideal.

When riding season begins again, simply uncover your motocross bike, put the battery back in place, fill your gas tank and you're ready to hit the trails and hills all over again!

Choosing the Best ATV or Motocross Helmet

If you're going to ride, you need to be as safe as possible and that starts at the top of your head with a good ATV or motocross helmet. Making the right decision for yourself helmet-wise is a personal choice but there are a number of factors you can use to narrow down your choices to the best fit for your personal riding style. Most helmets made today are constructed using lightweight, space-age materials and are DOT (Department Of Transportation) approved.

Motocross and dirt bike helmets are normally designed to be both lightweight and durable so the rider won't feel fatigued. These helmets usually have full-face protection because of the flying debris and rocks ("roost") that gets kicked up during a ride.

ATV helmets are made from durable injection molded plastics and in case of an impact, will offer you unmatched protection. Because ATVs kick up just as much debris as when riding a dirt bike, ATV helmets are usually full face as well. Many helmets have wisely designed venting systems to keep you cool and contrary to popular belief, you can actually hear BETTER when you wear a helmet no matter if you ride an ATV or a dirt bike because the wind noise is reduced in your ears.

Make sure your helmet is DOT certified and most of all understand how your helmet should fit. A helmet should fit snugly but not constrict your head and it should go on and off with little resistance.

Last but not least, if the "look" of your helmet matters to you, rest assured there is a color or style to match your personality. There are low-key single color helmets, wild tie-dyed looking helmets and so much more, check out the huge selection at Raceway and remember, shipping is always free of charge!

Keeping Your Helmet And Goggles Looking Their Best

Your helmet and goggles are a good investment in your safety. You want to keep them in tip-top shape. As they will be the only protection between your head and the ground in case of an accident.

No matter what the brand name is or how much you paid for it, a helmet will age. The resins and foams that make up the helmets, although many are made from space age polymers, will degrade with time. If your foam isn't as cushy as it once was, your head isn't as protected. Look into replacing your helmet before your next ride.

Also, another mistake people make is how they store their helmets. Don't hang your helmet off your ATV or motocross bike. This can stretch your chinstrap and an ill-fitting helmet isn't safe. Another reason not to hang your helmet off your ATV or bike is that gasoline fumes can break down resins if your helmet is exposed to it on a daily basis. If you store your helmet in a garage, make sure it is not near a can of gasoline.

If your helmet has fallen from a distance of 4 feet or more and that includes the time it just rolled off the kitchen table, you should probably look into replacing your helmet. Helmets are good for one impact only - inspect your helmet for small and tiny fractures in the surface. This would indicate that your helmet has been used in an accident or dropped from a significant height. In either case, the protection qualities of the helmet have been compromised and it isn't safe for you to rely on for your protection.

Goggles are another item you'll want to take good care of. They do a good job of protection your eyes and shielding them from flying rocks and debris. Over time your goggles will get small scratches in them from doing their jobs and this will make your visibility less than 100%. A quick fix for the scratches is to use a soft clean cloth, like an auto detailing cloth that has no fuzz or lint - a microfiber towel would be best, and spread some Pledge (the furniture product) treatment on the lens, use a small bit at a time and rub off the excess. The little scratches on your goggles will be filled.

Keeping your helmet and goggles maintained will save you money in the long run because you won't have to keep replacing them. Also, you'll enjoy a safer ride knowing that you're fully protected!

Summer Vacation-Is Your Child Ready to Ride Safely?

Youth Small: 6 5/8 - 6 3/4 Hat Size (20 7/8 - 21 1/4 in)

Do You Need A Jacket While Riding An ATV?

In a word: yes. When you're out enjoying a fun ride on your ATV or motocross bike, you will want to protect your arms and torso. Jackets are not only protection from slapping branches and flying debris hitting your arms when you ride your ATV or motocross bike, they are also fantastic protection against the elements. In the summer, wear a lighter weight jacket to help protect yourself from the harmful rays of the sun.

If you do a lot of climbing with your ATV, you will want to take a jacket along for protection from the elements as the higher you go, the cooler it can get and getting cold causes fatigue which can make you a less alert rider.

A rock can feel like a small dagger if it hits your arm traveling at a high velocity. A bug can feel like a projectile if you're moving at a decent rate of speed when it hits you. If you're wearing even a lightweight jacket, chances are you'll barely feel it if you feel it at all. Raceway has a huge selection of jackets that come with matching jerseys and pants if you're looking to create an entire look for yourself. There are also helmets that coordinate with all the riding gear.

Thor makes an outstanding line of riding gear for your ATV or motocross bike. If you're looking for your first jacket or you just want to add to your growing collection of riding gear, check out the choices at Raceway and best of all, shipping is absolutely free.
