Little Known Places to Ride Your ATV in Louisiana

Louisiana has some Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) that are fantastic opportunities to ride your ATV. Most of the areas have very limited riding seasons but are very much worth a visit.

The DEWEY WILLS WMA has various trails that are open for ATV use during hunting season or September through December. There is one main ATV trail in this WMA that is open all year round. Primitive camping is allowed and you can have a great time riding your ATV through the bottomland hardwoods forests where the wildlife viewing opportunities abound.

Another great ATV riding destination is located at the Little River WMA. Here you will find ATV trails that open during hunting season only and there is also a designated year round ATV trail. The ATV trails are well marked and easy to follow. There are abundant pine and hardwood forests to drive through in this area. Camping is allowed, but only primitive camping. SABINE WMA- has a good number of ATV trails but they are only open during hunting season. Primitive and RV camping is allowed although there are no RV hookups. There are a good number of hardwood forests to ride your ATV through. Bring your camera as these are very scenic ATV trails and you're sure to find a photo worthy memory to shoot from this ATV ride.

To minimize the human impact on these wildlife management areas, the ATV riding season is very short, however the trails are easy to navigate and very well maintained making this a relaxing and fun destination for your next ATV outing.

ATV and Motorcycle Day Rides in Georgia

Georgia is a rider's heaven with the many different kinds of areas to ride you can find in one state. There are rocky mountainous areas, flat sandy beaches, pine forests with thick, lush foliage and a lot of short, gravely trails.

If you're looking for a new area to make a day ride with your family or friends, make The Trails at the Beach in Clayton County your next destination. This is just an 8-mile track of trails that are very well maintained and the trails are well marked. The rating of these trails is beginner to intermediate.

Tibbs U. S. Forest ATV Trail is less than 4 miles in length but is a great ride for ATVer and motorcycle riders of every skill level. This trail is a multi-use trail and you will be sharing the narrow trails with other traffic such as mountain bicycles, horseback riders and other motorcycles and ATV riders.

Another fun destination to make for a short day ride is Mill Park in Lawrenceville. You will find over 10 miles of narrow one-way trails with very few loop backs. This is a very scenic and heavily foliaged area to ride in.

Another multi-use trail that gets a lot of traffic because of the easy access and beginner level trails is at the Turner Creek U. S. Forest Multi-User Trail. The trail system is very busy and only about 5 miles in length. There are few challenges and it is a great place for beginning riders. Because of the heavy usage, you will find you are stopping a lot to let others pass you on the trails.

Georgia Trails to Take Your Motorcycle and ATV On

If you are lucky enough to live in or you will be visiting the great state of Georgia in the near future. there are a good number of short trails to ride that will give you and your ATV or motorcycle riding buddies a great day of hitting the trails. Very few of these areas will allow for camping so be prepared to put your ATV or motorcycle on a trailer and go to a local motel if you're planning on making a long weekend out of hitting the trails.

Make a trip to Sope Creek Trail in Sandy Springs it is over 56 technical miles of trails that are rocky and steep and just when you conquer those, you will find yourself on a densely forested area. This is not for beginning riders at all, if you're a rider who loves a challenge, you will thoroughly enjoy this trail system.

South East Georgia Mountain Trails in St. Simons is barely 2 miles length and they are one-way trails with one loop around. Another short trail system located not too far away is the Stonewall Falls Loop that is just over 8 miles of one-way trails. There are streams to ford, mountain views and waterfalls. This is a very scenic ride. The beginning of the ride is technical and not for beginners, then the ride levels off and is a pleasant run through a narrow, forested area.

Sumac Creek Multi-User Trail is a multi-use trail system. The northern end of the trail is for ATVs and other OHVs and is primarily constructed of gravel. Along with your helmet, make sure to wear your goggles and gloves when riding this area as gravel can really sting when the rider's tires in front of you kick it up the loose gravel.

Georgia ATVing and Motorcycle Riding Fun

If you're looking for more places to ride your ATV or motorcycle in the state of Georgia, you're in luck. There are numerous small, short tracks that offer up a lot of riding fun.

Located in Atlanta is Peavine Creek. Which is just 1 mile in length and is a very narrow one-way trail. This is a very technical trail system and should be attempted by intermediate or advanced riders only. If you're new to the sport or you don't have a lot of riding experience, better skip this trail.

Pine Mountain Trails located in Pine Mountain is a large network of one-way trails and is growing a little bigger every year. This is a family-friendly area and has a good number of easy rated and beginner level trails to ride. The trails are just over 3 miles in length and most of the trail system runs beside a river. There are very few technical challenges but there are a lot of twists and turns on this trail system.

Even though most of these trail systems are very short always wear your helmet and goggles. Raceway has a fantastic selection of DOT approved helmets, gloves, goggles and other riding apparel that will not only let you look your best when riding, you'll also be your safest! Helmets are especially important. If your helmet is old or has taken an impact, replace it immediately as it may be compromising your safety. Best of all when you purchase your riding gear from Raceway, shipping is free.

Great Trails for ATVing in Georgia

Looking for a fun ATV or motorcycle ride in the state of Georgia? There are a number of trails that are a little off the beaten path but will give you a great day of riding run with your family or favorite group of riding buddies.

Rock Creek US Forest ATV Trail is a multi-use trail system for everyone from motorcyclists, to hikers to bikers and of course, ATV riders. This trail system is just a little over 5 miles in length and is a steady climb up the crest of Tatum Lead. Many sections of this trail system are very steep and rocky. Do not attempt this trail system if this type of terrain is unfamiliar to you.

Another fun destination is the Selma Erwin Nature Trail in Milledgeville where you can ride on 4 miles of narrow, one-way trails. These are very technically challenging trails and you will find you need a lot of handling skills to master this trail system. If you are an experienced rider, you will enjoy riding this trail system. If you're a newer rider with not a lot of experience handling obstacles, it would be best if you stayed around the trailhead and practiced your maneuvering skills.

Silver Comet Trail in Powder Springs is a fun place to spend a day. It has over 40 miles of paved roads. There are well-maintained trails as well and this is a great place for beginners to learn the basics of handling their ATVs or motorcycles. If you're looking for a place the whole family can enjoy, make a stop at the nearby Silver Comet Trail in Smyrna. There are over 30 miles of trails located here with plans to build a trail system that reaches Birmingham, Alabama.

Georgia ATVing and Motorcycle Riding Trails

Georgia has a good number of destinations to take your ATV or motorcycle to. The trails range from very easy to very difficult. Depending on your skill level and experience in riding, choose your destination wisely.

The Trails at the Beach in Clayton County are just 8-miles in length but are a single and doubletrack network of very well maintained riding trails. The trails are rated in difficulty by signs, ride the appropriate trail for your skill level and always ride with a buddy. If you're new to riding, check out the Thompson Trail in Macon. This is another short ride but well worth it. The trail is currently only 4-miles long but an involved maintenance crew is expanding the trail on a regular basis. These trails are rated intermediate and has good climbs and downhills.

Tibbs U. S. Forest ATV Trail is just over 3 miles long and is a network of multi-use trails. Even though this riding area is not for beginners, these trails get heavy use. The trail begins at Grassy Mountain and ends at a gate on private land. Even if the gate is open, do not ride on this land without permission from the owner. The heaviest part of the riding season is during hunting season from November through February

Tom Triplet in Pooler has 3 short trails of roughly 1 miles each that loop around. The trail is very easy to ride and very flat. There are old rice silos and if you look carefully as you ride through, you will see the remnants of old stills used for making whiskey back during Prohibition.

Great ATV and Motorcycle Riding In Georgia

If you're looking for some short day trips to make with your ATV or motorcycle, Georgia has a huge number of riding opportunities. Many of these areas border private property, so be aware where the trail ends and private property begins. Some landowners don't mind a little trail blazing by ATV and motorcycle riders and others mind in a large way. Unless you have specific permission from the landowner (and for your own protection from a fine - get it in writing), always get permission before you go exploring off of a designated trail riding area.

Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge in Savannah has over 2,824-acres to explore and is lushly forested with pine and oak forests. There are also open fields and freshwater ponds and salt marsh creating a brackish water environment. The trail system is just over 4 miles long and certain sections are closed to vehicle traffic during the breeding season. The trails are only open during daylight hours.

A very technical ride is located at Horn Creek in Augusta where you will find 5 of the hardest miles you can ride. It has deceptively nice smooth areas that turn into rocky, obstacle filled areas with large tree roots, fallen trees and large rocks. If you are an experienced rider, or even better, an experienced rider with a winch kit, you will enjoy this trail system immensely.

The Houston Valley Georgia US Forest ORV Area is 25 miles of very easy trails that are well marked and very well maintained. There are a few challenges that experienced riders will enjoy and camping is allowed if you're looking to make a full weekend out of riding this trail system.

Short Trail Rides in the State of Georgia

If you're looking for a one day get away with your family or friends. There are a good number a short trails in Georgia that offer good technical riding opportunities.

Livesy Trail in Decatur is located around the lake. The trail itself is only 3 miles long and loops around. This trail is fantastic for beginners because there are no challenges over obstacles.

The Mansell Trails in Alpharetta are just over 6 miles of one-way networked trails. There are a lot of steep down hills and some good climbing that experienced riders will enjoy. These trails get a lot of traffic and are very worn down and eroded so traction may be an issue in various places. Don't ride these areas if there has been a lot of rain, your chances of getting stuck in the mud due to no traction is quite high.

If you're riding in an area that gets a lot of traffic try to follow the standards put forth by the organization Treadlightly. Try to leave every trail better than when you found it. If you see trash on a trail stop and pick it up. By doing your part to keep the trails maintained, you will not only make the trails even better for the next rider, but you set a good example of what a responsible rider should be.

Additionally, even though these are very short rides, always wear your helmet, goggles and gloves at the very least. For gravel and densely forested trails, long pants and long sleeves will save your arms and legs from scratching branches and the sting of gravel getting kicked up by another rider's tires. A full line of safety gear that will protect you from head to toe when you ride is available at Raceway and shipping is always free!

Georgia ATV and Motorcycle Trail Riding Fun

If you own an offroad vehicle such as an ATV or motorcycle and you live in Georgia or you're planning to visit their soon, there are a large number of short fun day rides they you can take.

Check out Milma Creek ATV Trail as a destination for your next ride. At just over 3 miles in length this is one challenging trail. Many sections of this trail are steep and there are streams that must be crossed. This Trail connects to two other trails, the Windy Gap Trail and Tibbs Trail. There are two trailheads to access this trail, either the base of Grassy Mountain via Windy Gap Cycle Trail, or the top of Grassy Mountain via Tibbs Trail. This trail is for experienced riders only as the steep areas should be attempted only by riders with experiences climbing steep inclines.

Mountaintown Creek in Ellijay is roughly 19 miles long and about half as it is narrow one-way trails. The other half of this trail system is gravel road in a loop trail. There are numerous creek crossings on this trail so be prepared to get very wet. If it's a hot summer day this is a great ride!

If you're looking for a nice easy ride. Try the Ocmulgee River Trail where the trails are wide and will maintained. This trail is heavily used by horseback riders so be aware of a chance encounter with a rider on horseback. These trails are not too difficult for anyone with light experience riding and should be a good scenic ride that all riders enjoy.

An older series of trails that have been rediscovered are located at Ocmulgee Flats Hunt Camp in Suwanee. These trails are currently going through some main roads but they are very accessible. They are gently rolling and great for beginners and can be very narrow at times.

Yellow River Park in Stone Mountain is no longer an open to ATV riders but is still used by bikers. There are 10 miles of one-way trails with many loops. The trails are extremely well maintained and equally as well marked making this an easy trail system to stay on. Great Motorcycle Riding and ATVing in Georgia

There are a good number of places to ride your motorcycle or ATV in Georgia. The Amicalola Falls State Park in Dawsonville is a great place to start. It is 16 miles of single riding track that loops around. A little hard for beginning riders to tackle but great for anyone with a little experience and good handling skills of their machine. These trails loop around quite a bit and it is very easy to get lost in this area, plan your ride ahead of time using the most current map. For the latest information on this area, contact the Amicalola Falls State Park Department at (706) 265-4703.

Atwood West Brow Loop at Pigeon Mountain in Lafayette is just 13 miles of single track loop and is also rated for riders of an intermediate skill level. The riding areas are formed from dirt and gravel roads. Do not rely on your face visor to protect your eyes in these areas, wear your goggles. Gravel can travel at a high velocity and manage to get in your eye when you least expect it. Much like Amicalola Falls, these are also winding trails and even though this is a relatively short trail system to ride your ATV on, getting lost is a possibility. Get a current map and plan your ride. This area is managed by the Georgia DNR Wildlife Resources Department at 706-295-6041

Augusta Canal in Augusta is another great place to take your ATV or motorcycle. This is a short trail at only 12-miles in length, There are two well-marked loops, a red (about 4 miles) and white (about 3 miles). If you stick to the canal, the ride can be enjoyable and fun.

These are just a few of the fun places to ride your ATV or motorcycle in Georgia.

ATVing and Motorcycle Riding Fun in Georgia

There are a good number of fun runs to make all over the state of Georgia on your ATV or motorcycle.

Athens has Ingles Trails, which is over 25 miles of one-way trails. There are a good number of technical downhill runs along with some good rolling terrain. This is a great place to spend a day especially if you're new to the sport as there are very few technical challenges on this trail system.

Iron Mountain Multi-User Trail is a very busy trail system. This trail system is just over 4 miles long and fords the Conasauga River at one point and then passes through a grassy clearing, ending in a forest that opens to a beautiful view of the Cohutta Mountains. You can have a great time on these trails no matter if you're a newer ATVer or an seasoned rider with many excursions under your belt. There are few technical challenges on this trail system, but the reward is in the view at the end of the trail.

There is a camping area located nearby at the Cottonwood Patch camping area where you can set up a primitive campsite for the night. There are no facilities and no trash receptacles in this area, remember whatever you bring in with you, bring out. Follow the good standard put forth by Treadlightly and make every trail you ride better for the next person and keep your old and new favorite riding areas open.

Short Day Rides In Georgia

If you have had your ATV or motorcycle in storage all winter and you're looking for some new trails to conquer, check out some of these short riding areas in Georgia. Most of them are very short, one day or less than a day runs to make on your ATV or motorcycle and very few will allow camping in the areas so be prepared to pack up your ride and find a place to stay for the night if you are planning on making a long weekend out of riding the area.

White Twister in Clayton is just 4 miles of narrow, one-way trails. Once you are on the trail, you will see why it is named the White Twister. This is a very technical, winding trail system that is not for the beginning rider.

Windridge ATV Park Trail is just over 5-miles long and is a very scenic ride. The trails are very narrow and recently 2 more miles were adding making it a total of 7 miles of trail system to roll through on your ATV or motorcycle. This is a very technical ride for the experienced ATVer or motorcyclist only. This riding area is open from dawn until dusk on weekends only. There is a $3 fee per rider that goes for upkeep of the trails. If you have been riding your ATV or motorcycle for a while and you have mastered the skills of trail riding and you're ready for a bigger and more technical challenge, this is the place to bring your machine for a great day of challenging riding.

Great Motorcycle and ATV Trails in Georgia

With warmer weather approaching and the season of winter fading away. You've probably been itching to get your ATV or motorcycle on the trails again. Georgia has a huge number of riding opportunities in the state.

If you're a rider with advanced skills, check out Bear Creek in Ellijay. This is a trail system that is just over 10 miles long of one-way very narrow trails. There are very few loop backs. And the traffic on this trail system is very heavy. There are a lot of technical obstacles and many down hills. If you've been riding your ATV or motorcycle for quite some time you will love this trail system.

Big Creek in Alpharetta has ever 10 miles of narrow one-way loop trail system. At the trail head there is a beginner's trail that is less than 2 miles long. It is very easy to ride and has absolutely no obstacles to overcome. If you're a more experienced rider hit the other trails and you will find creek crossings, rocky roads, and a good number of hills to climb.

Even though these are very short trails put safety first and never ride with out your helmet and goggles. Also, ride friendly and always try to leave the trail system looking better than when you found it; if you see trash pick it up and do your part to be a responsible rider and help keep the trail systems open for everyone.

Great ATV and Motorcycle Rides in Georgia

If you're tired of riding your ATV or motorcycle only on national forest lands, check out some of these trails that are small but a lot of riding fun. Blanket's Creek is located in the town of Woodstock. It is located in the town of Woodstock and most of the trail is a densely forested narrow trail. The rest of the trail is located on an old logging road. There is only one entrance to this trail, and if you see that the gate is closed, then the trail is closed for riding.

The Canton area holds a fun riding area called Park Trails. These are 5 miles long and narrow single trails, that are for advanced riders only. This can be confirmed when you see the beginning of the trail, with huge tree roots, fallen trees and large rocks. The trails themselves are largely unmarked and for expert riders only. If you're looking for a friendly trail to ride, check out Bubba's in Statesboro. This is a short trail and only 2 miles long and it's very easy and located on a short dirt road. The Toccoa Ranger District manages the Bull Mountain Multi-User Trail in Dahlonega and they will require that you let them inspect your machine prior to riding. This is just a 4 mile track that is lightly traveled and it is mostly gravel and dirt.

Those are just a few of the short fun rides you can find in the state of Georgia. If you're looking for a new place to ride your ATV or motorcycle and get away for an afternoon, check out one of this trails, you might just find a new favorite riding spot.

Great Trails to Ride in Georgia

Georgia has great weather nearly year-round for riding your ATV or motorcycle. Here are some fend trails located around the state, most of which are intermediate level writing skill, that you can check out if you happen to be in the area. If you're going to be in the vicinity of Thamston, check out Camp Thunder Trail. This trail system is a loop trail that is just over 8 miles long. It starts off in a dried up riverbed that is covered in loose pebbles. These trails are definitely not for beginners.

If you're looking for a very technical ride, check out Chain Buster Hill in Oxford. This area is rated as extremely difficult. Only the most experienced of riders should take on Chain Buster Hill. One section of the trail has a lot of tree roots to overcome but not a lot of rocks. Since these are trail systems of a more technical nature to ride, make sure to do a pre-ride inspection before you get out on the trail. Just check over the things that could go wrong such as tires, brakes, and chain. Make sure that you have gas and oil. Plan your ride on a map and always tell someone where you're going to be. If something does go awry and you get stranded in a place where you can't get a cell phone signal, you'll be really glad that someone knew where you were. Prepare a little and you'll have a great ATV or motorcycle ride everytime.

Easy Trails for Beginning Riders in Georgia

If you're newer to the sport of ATV or riding a motorcycle, you're going to want to start out riding trails for beginners this is a great way to hone your skills on your machine.

Check out the College Trail in Oakwood where you will find 4 miles of track that are networked together. The only challenge for the beginning rider will be that there are small hills. This is a good place to practice climbing. Make sure that you have an experienced rider with you so they can show you the ropes of safe climbing.

Coralwood Woods in Decatur is another great loop trail for beginning riders. This is a very short trail as it is only 1 mile long, and there are no real challenges on this trail. It is however densely foliaged so be aware of slapping branches.

Davenport ATV Trail is 5 miles worth of fun for beginning ATV or and motorcycle riders. These trails are mostly flat terrain and slowly winding trails. These trails are rated extremely easy and are a fantastic place for beginning riders to learn the good basic handling skills of their ATV or motorcycle. Georgia is a rider's paradise. This one state has sandy beaches, hard packed soil trails, mountains and dense forests of Pine. These are fantastic riding opportunities for the ATV and motorcycle enthusiast. Dug Gap has over 20 miles of trails. There is a double track climb with two separate trails going up. There are three separate tracks going downhill. If you're looking for a more intense ride there's a long winding trail located near the mountain. The trail head begins just past Dug Gap Mountain Road

Another great trail system is located at Durhamtown Resort in Greensboro about 40 miles east of Atlanta. This is a sportsman resort and there are over 100 miles of trails located on 7000 acres of property. Most of the trails are two lane and along with the dense forest riding, you will find creek crossings and hills to climb. The rating of this riding area, would be for intermediate skill level riders.

If you happen to be in the Macon area of Georgia, check out East Macon Recreational Park. This is a small riding area, and is for experienced riders there are fast downhills and good hills to climb. Additionally, the trails are very well marked with ribbons and arrows. If you're looking for a riding area that the whole family can enjoy, check out Family Fun in Jekyll Island. For just three dollars per person you can get into the park and ride the 20 miles worth of trails. The trails are mostly asphalt and cement around the island and are very easy to navigate.

On your next visit to Georgia, if you feel the need to ride check out one of these riding areas and have a great day exploring the trails on your ATV or motorcycle.

The TRAILS Grant Program Launched

In January 2006, a new grant program was launched called TRAILS to benefit ATV clubs, ATV associations and grassroots groups that promote safe riding and trail development. The grant program was developed to help ATV riders and the trails they use. The TRAILS program stands for Trail development Responsible riding Access Initiatives Lobbying Safety. These form the basis of being responsible ATVers and keeping the trails that they love to ride open.

In April, 34 grants were issued to ATV affiliated organizations in 20 states. The amount of the grants totaled $269,267.00. The funds will be used to promoting safe and responsible riding by ATVers and preserving access to ATV friendly places to ride. The funds granted can be used by these organizations for development or improvement of ATV trails, maintenance of existing ATV trails and safety and safe rider education. The grant funds are also allotted for groups to use in lobbying campaigns to help raise awareness that most ATV riders are responsible citizens that do not harm the environment. The funds granted to the various groups and organizations ranged from $2,000 to the maximum grant amount of $10,000. Grant applications are reviewed 3 times per year -- in April (application due March 1) , August (application due July 1) and November (application due October 1). All organizations may apply for a maximum of two grants per year and all organizations must have 501c3, 501c7 or non-profit organization status.

ATV Riding at Sugar Creek Trails

Located just a mile from the Mississippi River in Tennessee, the Sugar Creek Trails are a place where you can still see deer and wild turkey roaming the land.

The property was developed for OHV riding in the 1990s and attracts as many as 800 people who come out to ride the hills, ravines and forested trails of this area. The area became an ATV Mecca for the area when the owner of the property encountered a police officer that was ordering 3 ATVers off the riverbank. The owner of the property told the ATVers they could come ride their ATVs on his land. The following weekend, the ATVers returned with their friends and a new riding area was born.

The fee to ride Sugar Creek Trails is $10 for an all day ride or you can buy a membership for the entire week for $15. The trails are open to dune buggies, motorcycles, rock climbers and hikers. There's also a mud hole for four-wheel-drive trucks. Sugar Creek Trails is a huge facility that has marked trails and going off trail is not only allowed, it is encouraged. This is one place that ATVers are allowed to find their own trails and enjoy their own exploration adventures.

If you are a more experienced ATVer, you will thoroughly enjoy the challenges of the creeks, mounds and ravines to ride. There is also a U-shaped motocross track with plenty of jumps, tabletops and mounds. Helmets are only required to be worn on the motocross track, but everyone is advised to put safety first and wear their helmets and other safety gear at all times.

Riding at Cathy's Creek

At more and more national forest lands are becoming restricted to ATV riding. More and more private facilities are opening that are ATV and motocross friendly. Cathy's Creek located in Asheville North Carolina is just one of those facilities. This off road riding area has a complete wilderness feel and although the ATV trails are very natural they are also very well maintained. This is a very family friendly place and it's a great place to bring the kids to ride their ATVs as well as indulge in other outdoor recreational activities.

Cathy's Creek is very safety oriented and no one is allowed to ride without a DOT approved helmet and basic safety equipment such as goggles and gloves. There are also several areas that are good for younger and inexperienced ATV riders to learn good navigation techniques before they hit the ATV trails. Originally Cathy's Creek was built by a couple for their young son to practice his ATV driving, soon their simple track attracted other people that wanted a safe place to come ride their ATVs and soon, Cathy's Creek was born.

The fee to come ride is just $10 a person or $15 a family. The ATV courses designed for enjoyment of both people new to riding ATV's as well as experienced riders. The tracks themselves are one way but they are wide enough to allow for passing. If you're going to be in the Asheville North Carolina area with your ATV, plan to make a stop and have a great day writing a Cathy's Creek.

Ottawa National Forest ATV Riding Rules

The US Forest Service is updated the regulations to ride your ATV in Ottawa National Forest. This change not only affected recreational ATV riders, but ATVs used in hunting, fishing, and other transportation to activities within the national forest area. There will be a few posted roads left open but for the most part, the majority of the currently designated ATV trails will be closed to all OHV traffic.

The Forest Service claims that environmental impact of ATVs and limited personnel on their part are the major reasons for the trails being closed. There were over 200,000 miles of forest roads that are open to OHV use. And an additional 36,000 miles of solely designated ATV trails. National forest recreational riders are large contributors to many small, local economies. Under the new ruling, the amount of ATV trails that are open for riding in the Ottawa National Forest has dwindled to less then 20-miles of designated areas for ATV recreation. Part of the trail is an abandoned rail grade that was built as part of the Pioneer Trail by the US Army Reserve.

You can still make a day out of riding your ATV in the Ottawa National Forest, but be aware that the "Open to Ride Unless Posted Closed" rule no longer applies here and stay on the designated ATV riding paths only or you risk a hefty fine that will cost you more than your ATV.

Massachusetts ATVing Updates

Georgetown Rowley State Forest is one of the best-known places to ride your ATV in Massachusetts. Snowmobiles, horseback and motorcycle riders, hikers and off-road vehicles are all welcome in the forest. In the state there are only 7 parks that allow multi-use trail systems. The nearest to this forest is F. Gilbert Hills State Forest which is 50-miles away in the town of Foxborough.

The sale of ATVs has increased in Massachusetts nearly 300 percent. With the number of state registered ATVs jumping from a little over 1100 to over 6400 ATV riders. Unfortunately the state designated places to ride in the state of Massachusetts has fallen from 23 to a mere 7 state sanctioned riding areas. The state has put together a listing of criteria for creating new riding areas; one of the requirements is that the park or riding area under consideration must have at least 30-miles of trails available to them. Other considerations include raising the minimum age of riding an ATV from 10-years old to 12-years old with parental supervision. Currently lights, brakes and noise mufflers are required to ride ATVs and will continue to be a requirement.

As the number of ATVers grows in Massachusetts, the need for safe, enjoyable places to ride will increase. If you live in the state and you're an avid ATV enthusiast, stay apprised of the changes for ATVs and get involved with a local group to keep the trails you love to ride open. Volunteering for clean ups and helping maintain the trails is a great way to show community support for keeping the ATV trails open and maintained.

Houlton Maine is Asked to Designate ATV Riding Areas

In Houlton, ATVs are seen on the streets as well as the ATV trails. Using public roads to reach another ATV trail is legal as long as the ATV rider doesn't exceed 300-yards on a public roadway.

Currently there are a few regulations to ride your ATV in Maine. Your ATV must be registered and you must possess a valid driving license. The minimum age to ride an ATV in Maine is 10 yrs of age with adult supervision. ATVers under the age of 18 are also required to take a State Regulated safety course and they will be given a sticker upon completion that must be visible on their ATV at all times. Noise mufflers are a requirement with each county setting their own noise level threshold. All ATV riders regardless of age are required to wear a DOT approved helmet at all times when operating their ATVs. All children under the age of 16-years of age are required to have adult supervision at all times when riding an ATV.

With only a small number of ATV trails that are located on the outskirts of the town, ATV riders can't legally get from their homes to the designated trails in a legal fashion. ATV riders are a huge source of income nationwide through recreational riding. Many rural and small economies depend on those funds spent by weekend riders. Currently, proposals that will satisfy both the residents of Houlton and the ATV enthusiasts are being examined.

Northeastern Massachusetts ATV Riding

Located in the upper northeastern section of Massachusetts is the Georgetown-Rowley State Forest. These are dry, hard packed trails that make for some great ATVing. The trails tend to dry very quickly after a rain. Georgetown Rowley State Forest is located in northeastern Massachusetts roughly 30-miles north from Boston. This ATV trail is over 1,100-acres of forest area and if you use one of the connecting ATV trails, you can extend your ride by going into the Willowdale State Forest.

Because these trails are a flat and hard packed, you will find that you can go a little faster than on your average ATV trail ride. Use caution however because these are multi-use trails and you will encounter other traffic on the trails and you want to be traveling at a safe speed that will allow you to brake your ATV safely. Along with being a fantastically easy ATV ride, this flat, dirt trail can kick up a lot of debris and dust. Make sure that you are wearing a good fitting pair of goggles along with your helmet.

As with many riding areas managed by the state, these ATV trails are bordered on all sides by privately owned property and certain areas will be gated off entirely. Get permission before riding on private areas, and always leave the area better than you found it. If you see trash strewn around an area, take a moment and pick it up. If you see gates that have been mistakenly left open, close them. That's being a responsible ATV rider.

No matter when you visit this ATV trail system; Georgetown-Rowley State Forest Riding Area will always make for fun and easy day of ATV riding.

Ride Your ATV at the Tower Multi-Use Trail

This ATV trail is open from April 1st to November 30th of each year and by most ATV trail standards, it is on the small side. This is a multi-use ATV trail and you are likely to encounter several different kinds of traffic. Both on machine, horseback and foot.

This is a good place for people newer to the sport of ATVing to learn proper handling skills and defensive driving techniques under easy trail conditions. The ATV trail connects the small city of Tower, Minnesota to a public beach and campground area. This well maintained ATV trail is rated as one of the easiest there is in the area. There are only a few inclines and very few turns. The trail itself is mostly hard packed trail that is almost road like.

If you want to make a long weekend out of riding your ATVs in this area and camping out. Almost any time during the riding season is a great time. Since this is Minnesota, snow is a possibility during the early and late parts of the riding season. Dress in layers for the ultimate in comfort. If you are planning to ride this trail in the early or late part of the riding season, a good rule of thumb would be to call the Trail Management office to make sure the trail is open. This trail doesn't close for much, but they do shut it off when there the weather makes the trails to slippery or snowy to ride.

If you're a newer ATVer or you have ATV riders in your group that need to learn some good basic trail riding skills, make the Tower Multi-Use trail your next riding destination.

Thistledew ATV Trail is Open

If you're looking for an easy ATV trail to ride on, check out Thistledew ATV Trail located in the George Washington State Forest. The riding season is comparatively short as it only runs from April 1st- November 30th of each year. During the early and late parts of the riding season, you are likely to run into patches of snow as well as snowmobilers. These are multi-use trails and you will not only see snowmobile riders, but horseback riders are also a very common sight. To play it safe, when a rider on horseback approaches you on the trail, pull your ATV and over and kill the engine until the horse and rider are about 25 yards down the ATV Trail. ATV engines spook some horses, others could care less. Err on the side of caution.

Remember, this is black bear country and be on the lookout for bears. They generally won't approach you unless they feel threatened. If you encounter a bear, don't run - bears will interpret that as a sign to give chase and most bear can run over 30MPH for a longer distance than you might think. These ATV trail are covered in stand of Norway Pine trees and there's a huge area of regenerated Aspen trees. The ATV trail is rated easy and is extremely well maintained and the trail is so well marked that this is a great place for a newer ATV year to learn the basics of trail riding.

This is a beautiful and scenic area to ride your ATV in. On your next outing with your ATV riding buddies, make an excursion to the George Washington State Forest and have a great day riding your ATVs or stretch it out into a long weekend of camping and riding your ATVs on the trails.

Florida Fun On Your ATV

Florida has a great place to take your ATV. The Osceola National Forest has nearly two hundred thousand acres of what was once the original land Florida was founded on are waiting to be explored on your ATV. The ATV trails in the Osceola National Forest are numerous and many are overgrown and unmarked. There are however, current ATV trail maps available at one of the ranger stations located around the forest.

As always when riding in Florida, be wary about areas that become wetlands. Federal Law protects wetlands and all human traffic in the area is strictly overseen so the delicate eco-balance is maintained. Wetlands are very fragile and you should never ride your ATV through wetlands, even when not protected as you could be doing irreversible damage to the terrain. If you ride your ATV in a protected area and you get caught, be prepared for a hefty fine.

Florida doesn't have a lot of regulations for riding your ATV in Osceola National Forest. However you must have a valid driving license and you will be given a permit to display on your ATV and this must be visible at all times when riding in this forest area. When you bring your ATV into the trailhead area, your ATV will need to be hauled in on a trailer. Stay on the trails with red-posted signs.
If you choose to make a long weekend out of ATVing in this national forest, there are numerous campsites placed around the trails and you can set up a primitive campsite and enjoy a great long riding vacation with your favorite riding buddies.

Osceola National Forest is ready and waiting for your next ATV excursion. Bring your ATV and get ready to explore the Florida wilderness that is largely unchanged from the earliest pioneer days.
