ATV Riding Tips For New ATV Owners

If you got a new ATV, you're probably dying to take it out on the trail. If you haven't already, take a rider safety course. Many local Department of Motor Vehicle offices give these lessons for free or a small nominal charge. You will learn the basics of safe ATV handling and the value of taking a short safety course can't be overstated.

Riding safely means making sure you are alert at all times. Never ride under the influence of alcohol or any other drugs. This pertains to any prescription or over the counter cold medicines that can make you drowsy. You are a danger to yourself and other ATV riders if you don't have all your wits about yourself. Resist the urge to show off. Unfortunately, when people don't practice safe riding habits, accidents can happen. Especially if you are a newer ATV rider, stick to the safe handling of your ATV. You may feel you want to explore harsher terrain and you probably cannot wait to climb rocks and steep hills, but learn to navigate the winding flat trails and then have an experienced ATVer show you the ropes for maneuvering your ATV.

Take your time learning to use your ATV, if you rush into a situation you can't handle, you could find yourself in over your head. Take the time to know and understand your ATV, and ride with experienced riders. In no time at all you will have gotten the experience and knowledge needed to handle the more intense trails.

El Mirage Dry Lake - A Super ATV Ride

The Mojave Desert has a little jewel located within that has some great ATVing. The El Mirage Dry Lake Recreational Area has a great ATVing experience and there are areas for both beginning ATVers as well as experienced ATV riders. This area is over 24,000-acres and is a very popular destination.

The diverse terrain and quick weather changes will keep you on your toes. It's not unusual for the summer temperatures to reach 120-degrees and the nighttime temperatures to drop quickly. It can be very cold at night so bring along extra clothing to layer for nighttime. Also, fast-moving, powerful thunderstorms are not uncommon in the summertime. If you see a storm approaching, take cover, as lightning is a possibility. The storms usually pass by very rapidly and you can get back to riding your ATV normally within a short period of time.

This area has flat lakebed riding, mountainous areas to climb on your ATV and all combined with a beautiful view and an abundance of wildlife. These are multi-use trails and you will encounter other adventurers such as other ATVers, motorcyclists, and aircraft enthusiasts flock to try out the rolling hills and diverse terrain.

Get a map and plan your ride before you come tackle this area. Certain areas are bordered by private land, be sure you have permission before you ride your ATV on anyone's private land. Stay on the trails at all times and you will avoid a possible confrontation. This is a fun ATV area with a little something for everyone. Enjoy your next outing to the El Mirage Dry Lake on your ATV!

Dumont Dunes - A Sandy Good ATV Ride!

If you're a little bored with riding your ATV on the forest trails and mud holes don't hold the same appeal for you, and you want some new terrain to ride your ATV on, check out Dumont Dunes in Barstow California. Dumont Dunes doesn't get a lot of traffic, as it is located in a more remote location. If you haven't had experience driving your ATV on sandy terrain, you'll find it is a totally different navigation experience than any other terrain you've had a chance to have your wheels on.

If you have kids along for the ride that are too little to ride on an ATV, they can have a blast zooming down the sandy dunes with a snow saucer or snow board. There are no amenities available here. Bring everything you need with you on your ATV ride. Bring all your food, water and regular camping equipment. If you are planning on cooking out, bring materials to build a fire as well as there are no trees in the area to get wood from.

The elevation here varies from 700 feet, at the river, to 1200 feet at the top of Competition Hill. Permits are required to ride at this area. The white sands make for a lot of fun on your ATV and with the scenic, steep volcanic hills in the background, the Dumont Dunes is a great place to spend a weekend with your family and friends riding your ATVs.

Cow Mountain Recreation Management Area ATVing Fun

Cow Mountain has an amusing name and is a great place to take your ATV. This ATV park has over 60,000 acres available for your enjoyment. This is a great place to spend a weekend ATVing with your friends. The riding area is huge and would be impossible to cover in a day or even a weekend, but if you choose to set up a primitive camp, you will be able to cover a lot of ground on your ATV and have a great time doing it.

A creek and a mountain ridge separate the areas of riding. If you like a lot of diverse terrain when you ride your ATV, you'll find it at Cow Mountain. There are over 31 miles of streams and 13 water reservoirs ready for you to ford. Don't be surprised if you find the local wildlife residents such as the native black tail deer, bears, and wild turkeys checking you out from afar.

The northern area of Cow Mountain is not open to ATVers any longer. However, the southern side is an ATVers paradise. The trails systems are intricate and winding. Most do not connect to each other, so plan your ride in advance to make sure you can hit the right loop around to get back to your trailhead.

There are also some steep, rocky areas just before the creek area. If you have never attempted to climb with your ATV on rocky terrain, have an experienced ATVer show you the safe way to do it. There is a lot of fun waiting for you at the Cow Mountain Recreation Management Area, make that your next ATVing weekend destination with your ATVing buddies.

Coal Creek Trail System an ATV Ride for Everyone

There is a little something for everyone one at The Coal Creek Trail System. Flat, dusty trails to really open up your ATV on, mud holes for the ATVer that likes to get down and dirty. There are more then 100 miles of terrain. Make it a full weekend of ATVing and you can camp out with your friends and explore all that this area has to offer.

Whether you are an ATV rider that loves to rev up your engine and really see what your ATV can do on the flat trails or hit the mud holes, you can have the best of both worlds on these ATV trails. The dirt roads here will allow you to charge full speed ahead and leave your ATV buddies watching your dust. If you love to get down and dirty in the mud, you're in the right area. If mud isn't your thing, bypass the mud holes easily and just stay on the winding trails.

There is beautiful scenery in this area. When you ride your ATV at Coal Creek you will see gorgeous panoramic views as you get to the top of the steep, rocky paths. Some of the rocky paths will require some skill to climb, make sure you have an experienced ATVer to show you the ropes if this type of terrain is new to you. There are also waterfalls and a lot of wildlife is in the area. If you're looking to make a long weekend out of this ATV ride, camping at Coal Creek is free!

Riding Your ATV Responsibly on Wetlands

Some people will argue the point with you, but you can be eco-friendly and ride an ATV. One way you can be a responsible ATV rider is to actively riding directly on wetlands. A wetland is ground that is constantly covered by shallow water, or with saturated soil. Wetlands are essential to nature, and provide the environment with important wildlife habitat, flood and erosion control, a kind of natural water purification, and more.

So, how do you tell when you're seeing a wetland? Some types of vegetation, such as marsh grass or cattails, are good indicators that an area is a wetland. There are some things that may look like wetlands that aren't, such as a puddle of rain on a hard surfaced trail. This is probably not a wetland, but be cautious just the same as riding repeatedly through a wet part of a trail will degrade the terrain.

A large number of ATV trails have wetlands in their forests, so be careful when you ride, and keep your ATV on the trail. Most ATV trails are plotted to avoid wetlands, but occasionally you will come upon one. Do your best to completely avoid the wetland and drive your ATV around it if possible to do so without trespassing on private property. If you do not respect the wetlands and the forest as a whole while you ride on it, the actions of a few irresponsible ATVers have caused the shut down of entire ATV trail systems. Remember to be safe, have fun, and Treadlightly with your ATV.

Frisco-Fitton ATV Trail in the Rio Grande National Forest

Newer ATV riders will find this trail difficult but for more experienced ATV riders; this is the most fun you can have within such a short 3-mile ATV trail.

If you are a newer ATV rider or you do not have much experience climbing steep grades, out on the ATV trail isn't the place to learn. Even experienced ATV riders will approach steep and rocky terrain with respect and caution. If you're an experienced ATV rider, you will love the challenges this ATV trail will present on your ride.

The Rio Grande National Forest Service manages this trail. The trail is open June through October and be aware that during the early and late part of the riding season, as the potential to encounter ice and snow on various aspects of the ATV trail. These are multi-use trails with use by other ATV riders, hikers, horseback riders, and motorcycle riders. If you encounter a horseback rider, be sure and pull your ATV over and kill the engine. You never know what might spook a horse and it can be just as dangerous for you as the rider. When the horse and rider are down trail at least 25 yards, restart your engine and continue touring the ATV trails.

This ATV trail connects two major trails, Bennett Trail (Forest Trail 872) and West Frisco Trail (Forest Road 850). This ATV trail has steep sections and is difficult for beginners. Make sure you ride with a buddy with a winch kit installed on their ATV, just in case you get caught in one of the steep gullies. As with all Forest Service managed lands, please follow the Treadlightly standards when using these ATV trails and make sure to have your ATV permit in a plainly visible place on your ATV.

Riding Green Ridge 4WD Road at Roosevelt National Forest

If you're newer to the sport of riding an ATV, and you are looking for an easy trail to ride, check out Green Ridge 4WD Road in the Roosevelt National Forest. This is a very small ATV trail at only 2 miles long but it is also very easy. The riding season for this ATV trail is very short, it is only open from approximately June through September.

A big plus for this trail system is the extremely scenic view of the Medicine Bow Range to the west and this ATV trail will take you past Lost, Laramie and Twin Lakes. Because these trails are rated so easy, you are likely to encounter a lot of traffic during the short riding season. If you happen to be writing your ATV in the early morning or around dusk, you are likely to see a lot of the woodland residents.

The short trail system is ideal for new ATV riders. There is almost no incline and the trails themselves all the narrow are winding and easy to follow. Because this is national forest land they do you ask that you follow the standard set by Treadlightly and ride your ATV in an environmentally friendly fashion. Remember your goal is to leave no trace of your ATV ride.

If you're looking for an easy trail system to spend the day with your friends on, check out an excursion to Green Ridge. This short trail will provide a day's worth of ATV riding fun for you and your friends!

Tour Gramp's Motorized Trail Inside Pike National Forest

Inside Pike National Forest is a very friendly ATV trail called Gramp's Motorized Trail. This ATV trail is very short at only 2 miles long and even though the difficulty rating is only intermediate, this trail system only receives moderate use from other ATV riders, hikers, and motorcycle riders, mountain bikers, and snowmobile riders.

The open season for riding this ATV trail is very short it is only open December through March each year. This trail does possess some steep areas but mostly it is just a great ride as it is a lush winding trail is full of turns in narrow areas. Remember, even when it doesn't feel too cold at the trailhead, it can feel a lot colder on the trail. Dress and layers as it will help you maintain your body heat, wearing a hat underneath your ATV helmet will help retain your body heat as well.

Because the time of year at this trail is open, you are very likely to encounter snow. If riding on this type of terrain is new to you make sure think you have an experienced ATV rider along and that can show you the tips and tricks for handling your ATV in snowy conditions. Pike National Forest does require that you have a spark arrestor and a noise muffler installed on your ATV prior to riding on Gramp's trail as the winters are very dry and a spark from your ATV could cause a forest fire.

ATV on Fremont's Camp Trail at the Rio Grande National Forest

If you're looking for a short ATV trail that is not too difficult to ride, check out Fremont's Camp ATV Trail. This ATV trail is just a little and for 3 miles long and even though it's not rated very difficult for navigation it only gets very light use because of the frequent snow storms in this area.

Fremont's trail is part of the Rio Grande national Forest and they do require that you have a permit displayed on your ATV at all times when riding this trail. Also, your ATV will be inspected prior to riding this ATV trail to ensure that you have a spark arrestor and a noise muffler installed on your ATV.

This ATV trail has a rough and rugged history. In the mid 1800s, General John C. Fremont took a party of 37 men and 120 mules and made a disastrous attempt to cross the San Juan Mountains in the middle of the winter while he was attempting to find in new route for the incoming railroad. They got stranded as a normal winter leaves the route almost completely impassable and they lost 11 of the men and all of the mules.

This trail is closed when snowy conditions make this area too dangerous to venture out in on foot much less an ATV, call the Rio Grand National Forest Rangers Station before you haul your ATV out to Fremont's to make sure the trail is open.

Take Your ATV to Flume Creek Road

Another great destination for the beginning ATV riders is located at Flume Creek Road. This ATV road will take you through a winding forest trail and then climb above Twin Lakes finally descending into Flume Creek.

This is a great day ride for new ATV riders as the trail is an only 4 miles long. The San Isabel National Forest manages the ATV trail and they do require that you have your spark arrestor and noise muffler installed prior to riding this trail.

This trail is only an open from May through October and if you are riding on your ATV in this area during the early or late part of the riding season be aware it is likely you will encounter snow. If you have never driven your ATV on snow, make sure you are riding with an experienced ATVer that can show you the tips and tricks for navigating your ATV on this type of terrain

The National Forest Service asks that you adhere to the Treadlightly standards of riding your ATV to keep it environmentally friendly and help preserve ATV trails for future riders. This is also a great time for beginning ATV riders to learn to do pre-ride inspections. Catching the bolt that needs to be tightened on your ATV or the tire that needs a little inflating will make for not only a safer ATV ride but there's nothing worse than being caught out in the middle of your ATV excursion and have your ATV break down because you didn't check your ATV before taking it out.

These are multi-use trails, so be aware you will be sharing these trails with not only other ATV riders, but bikers, hikers, and horseback riders. This is a great area for beginners to learn a lot of great skills to make future ATV rides even better.

Helping Your Child Choose an ATV Helmet

Next to the ATV itself the most important piece of equipment you can buy your child is an ATV helmet.

Both Thor and AFX make DOT and Snell approved ATV helmets. They also come in a large selection of colors and styles. When choosing a helmet, it should fit snugly that not too tightly, and should not move from side to side.

The helmet, which has a lot of padding inside, should stay in the position in which you place it on your child's head. Do not use old motorcycle helmets or even an old ATV helmet. The reason for this is that a motorcycle helmet won't offer the complete protection needed for riding an ATV and a helmet is good for one impact only. If the helmet has been in an impact or has been dropped from a significant height, something as simple as rolling off of the top of the refrigerator where it was just placed "for a moment", that helmet can not protect your child's head as there are most likely microscopic fissures and breaks and the ability of the helmet to protect the head has been compromised.

Most of the modern design helmets are a lot more lightweight than ATV helmets made even a few years ago. When your child wears an ATV helmet, make sure that the helmet is not so heavy it will cause fatigue in your child, fatigued riding of an ATV is dangerous to both your child and other ATVers.

A Thor or AFX helmet will offer years of fun for your child and with all the cool designs they come in - there is bound to be one that will fit not only your child's head, but their taste as well.

Camp in Wyoming With Your Jetmoto ATV

Wyoming a a very beautiful state full of plush green forests, huge rocky canyons and mountains, rivers, and exquisite desert landscapes, not to mention some great ATV trails and campsites. The best place by far to go camping in Wyoming is the Bridger-Trenton National forest, as it offers the ATV enthusiast who enjoys camping the best of both worlds. The camping available at the forest for the most part is somewhat primitive, but it is worth it to stay there as you get immediate access to a huge amount of great woodsy ATV Trails that you can try out your brand new Jetmoto ATV on.

The Green River Lakes Campground is another place that offers both ATV trails and camping opportunities, and their sites are more advanced than the ones at the Bridger-Trention National Forest. Hikers and Mountain bikers also populate the trails here, so be sure to be courteous and wary while passing someone. The Half Moon Campground is yet another place that offers both camping and ATV trails in Wyoming, but remember to bring water, as it is not offered anywhere in the campground.

Due to the popularity of these ATV campgrounds, you may not be able to stay at one of them because they are often too packed. But don't worry, as Wyoming is full of great campsites that offer great amenities and activities that are near many of the above-mentioned ATV trails and campsites. Some of the most exceptional campsites in the area are: Buffalo KOA, Deer Park Campground, Fountain of Youth R.V. Park, Mountain View Motel & Campground, and the Sleeping Bear RV Park & Camp Ground. If you are looking for a place to try out your new Jetmoto ATV, Wyoming is it.

St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

If you have wanted to take your family out on a great vacation with your RV but you just haven't been able to decide where to go, you should consider doing to the St. Joseph Peninsula State Park. Located in Port St. Joe, Florida, the St. Joseph Peninsula State Park is a great place to go on a vacation. If you love to haul your ATV along with your RV to new destinations to ride, you'll love this excursion.

With its beautiful white sand beach and marvelous view of the ocean, in many ways staying at the St. Joseph Peninsula State Park isn't that different than a normal Florida Vacation. Plus, there are areas around the waterway that are perfect for ATVing. You don't need a permit but you must be a licensed driver and an adult riding an ATV must accompany children under 16.

Besides ATVing fun, while you are at the St. Joseph Peninsula State Park you will have many things to do, such as swimming, fishing, boating, canoeing and hiking. There are also many nature trails located in the area that offer a great view of Florida's more woodsy terrain, but remember to bring a first aid kit and some water, just in case. There are many types of fish to be found at the park, but out of state fishers must obtain a fishing license. Some of the fish that the park contains include Flounder, Mullet, Whiting, Bluefish, Speckled Trout, Red Drum and more.

Snorkeling is allowed an activities that you can partake in while at the St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, as the clear water and various wildlife found in the ocean provide for a great Snorkeling experience, but you must have your own snorkeling gear, or buy some in one of the shops in a nearby city. Panguitch KOA Campground

Located in the wonderful small town of Panguitch, Utah, the Panguitch KOA Campground is an excellent place to go if you are looking for a refreshing ATV camping experience. The campground is near many of the most popular Utah attractions and ATV riding areas, and you will be sure to have a great time riding your ATV in the area. The Panguitch KOA Campground area is especially great if you are looking for a nice and quiet place to try out your new Jetmoto ATV, as just about every type of terrain is available within an hours drive from the campground. Whether you want to ride your ATV on the beautiful rocky slopes of the Bryce Canyon National Park, or explore the exquisite red canyons and desert terrain of the Zion National Park, there is something for you to do in the immediate area.

And there are also many fabulous non ATV related things you can do in the area as well, such as visit the Grand Canyon, or take a trip over to Las Vegas, both of which are located just a few hours away. The campground is also close to the Capitol Reef National Park, the Cedar Breaks National Monument, the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Lake Powell, and Red Canyon. Aside from seeing beautiful landscapes and scenic views, these places offer many diverse activities, such as fishing, swimming, boating, horseback riding and much more.

Staying at the Panguitch KOA Campground saves you money spent on excessive camping fees, as the places near the above-mentioned attractions, especially Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon, normally cost quite a bundle to camp at. The Panguitch KOA Campground is an excellent place to do if you want to camp out with your ATV friends.

Bring Your Jetmoto to Empire ATV Trail

Located about 40 miles west of Denver, the primitive Empire trail is a popular one with ATVers. Empire is a small town with few services you will need to pack along everything you will be needing with you for your ATV ride.

From the parking area you won't be able to see the high mountains. First, you have to drive up the mountain road past some old mines, stop and take a few photographs, once on top of the mountains, there are even more photo opportunities. The mines are not blocked off but do not enter them. There are gases in some old mines that you cannot smell nor see but they can kill you in minutes. Never explore old mines. Also, many old mines have become bat habitats, and you really don't want to surprise several hundred bats that are sleeping just inside.

Once you are near the tree line on your ATV, the area opens up. These are multi-use trails so expect to see other traffic such as other ATVs, motorcycles, and jeeps. Some parts of the ATV trails are rough and will require some technical skill to pass. If you have experience riding intermediate to hard trails on your ATV this should be a piece of cake. The more power your ATV has, the easier this section of ATV trail will be for you.

Remember, you are in higher elevations and even in August, snow is a great possibility. Dress appropriately in layers and remember even though it might be comfortably warm where you parked and got going at the ATV trailhead, the higher elevations may be cold. Another great photo opportunity past the old mines is an old cabin near Bill Moore Lake, there is abundant wildlife in the area so have your camera ready!

Take Your ATV to Flat Rock Motorized Trail

This trail is a heavily used trail of intermediate difficulty connecting 2 other heavily used trails. The managing agency is Pike National Forest Service. These trails are open winter through spring. ATVers, hikers, motorcyclists, mountain bikers, and snowmobilers use these multi-use trails.

This trail is about 4 miles long and goes to an elevation of about 400 feet. The difficulty is intermediate, and newer ATV riders will enjoy this trail and pick up some great new maneuvering skills with their ATVs. More experienced ATV riders will enjoy passing on their learned skills to less experienced ATV riders.

Since these are National Forest managed lands, be sure to have your muffler and spark arrestor installed prior to riding these ATV trails, the winter months can be especially dry and leave the grasslands open to fire from a mere spark. Dress appropriately and remember the higher elevations can become cold. Dressing in layers will usually let you ride comfortably and you can remove a layer if you get overheated on the way down.

People newer to the sport of riding ATVs will enjoy this trail system as there are not a lot of steep areas or water areas to cross on these ATV trails. The winding trails are fun to navigate and there is a lot of wildlife out and about if you ride in the early morning or at dusk.

ATVing at Oakley Mountain Trail System in Georgia

The State of Georgia has some great ATVing areas. This is definitely one of them. The trail system has been recently redone and is in renewed condition for riding your ATV. Previously, newer and intermediate riders of ATVs had avoided this trail system due to the extreme rockiness of some areas.

The new trail system has bypassed the rocky areas and the trail is a lot smoother of a ride. One of the parking areas is now paved as well. There is now a $5 fee to ride this area that was previously free, but those funds go towards upkeep of these trails.

This ATV trail is open from April 1st until December 31st of each year. This trail system is actual three separate trails that interconnect totaling just under 15-miles. Some parts of these trails can be steep, so make sure you know how to ride inclines and hills before attempting these trails. If you have plans to visit Tallulah Gorge, plan to go early. Only 100 people per day may go into the gorge and that number is usually met before noon each day.

If you're interested in riding your ATV at Oakley Mountain. Directions to north parking lot: From Clayton, go west on U.S. 76 for 6.8 miles. Turn left on Charlie Mountain Road and proceed until it dead-ends. Turn right on Bridge Creek Road and go 2 miles, where the road dead-ends at Lake Burton Dam Road. Turn right and drive 1.6 miles to the entrance road on the left. Enjoy your ride at Oakley Mountain!
