ATVing at Wurtz Ditch Four-Wheel Drive Road

Wurtz Four-Wheel Drive Road is located in the northwest part of Colorado and is part of the White River National Forest. This is an ATV ride for everyone. There are trails that are rated easy to extremely difficult. As with all National Forest lands, certain regulations apply such as you must have your ATV permit displayed in a clearly visible place on your ATV. Additionally, make sure your muffler and spark arrestor is installed prior to riding your ATV on these National Forest Lands. Helmets are a must in the State of Colorado.

These are multi-use trails and not only will you come across other ATVers, there are cross country skiers, four-wheelers, motorcycle riders, snowmobile enthusiasts and snowshoers, this is especially true when you're riding on the easier portions of this ATV trail. Getting to this ATV trailhead is easy. Simply follow I-70 to the Minturn exit (#171). Take Highway 24 through the town of Minturn and continue 13 miles to road #705. The turn off on the right (west) side of the road is hard to see but look for a small parking area immediately before the road sign. This is the ATV trailhead and parking is allowed.

When riding this ATV trail, you will experience high mountain meadows where there are snow patches nearly year round. If you don't have experience navigating your ATV in snow, it's a little different, make sure you have experienced ATVer along for the ride who can help you learn the proper navigation techniques for this type of terrain. You will also see a good number of logging areas, especially on the two wheel drive dirt road that brings you to the ATV trailhead. The actual road is primarily embedded rock with good traction and a few very steep sections. There is a spur road off to one side towards the end of the ATV trail that ends in a private property area.

Most of this ATV trail is lush and dense. The forest has narrow trails with only room for one ATV and no passing. there are loop arounds every few miles in case you need to turn back for any reason. There are some good views of the mountain ranges to the west.

West Lost Trail and Your ATV

From May through September every year, there is some fabulous riding fun at West Lost Trail. Because this trail is so accessible and has an easy rating, it is a heavily used multi-use ATV trail. If you have only been able to ride your ATV in closed areas and you haven't had to share a trail with other traffic, be aware that you are certain to run into other ATVers, hikers, people on their way to fish at the Rio Grande Reservoir. You will frequently run into horseback riders on these trails.

All horses are individuals and you never know what will spook a horse. Always pull your ATV over and cut your engine and let the horse pass. When they are at least 50-feet behind you, you can resume riding. This insures safety for both yourself and the horseback rider. Plus, it is good trail etiquette. As with all National Forest Service managed lands make sure you have met all the requirements for riding your ATV on these lands such as wearing your DOT approved helmet at all times, having your ATV permit prominently displayed and your spark arrestor/muffler in place.

This is a small ATV trail but you'll find it is a very fun ride. New ATVers will enjoy the chance to test their skills and maneuvering abilities, it's a great place to teach more skills to new and inexperienced ATV riders.

Also, if you're looking for a place to spend a weekend with your family or friends, you will find that there are numerous great places to park your ATV and camp out. The beautiful views of Pole Mountain and vast panoramic views are possible when you park your ATV and hike towards the Continental Divide. This ATV trail provides the shortest access to Cataract Lake from the Rio Grande River drainage. If you happen to riding in the early morning hours, keep an eye out for bighorn sheep along the rugged ridges of Pole Mountain. Bring your camera along, these sheep are disappearing from the wild.

This ATV trail has something for everyone. Enjoy your ride at West Lost Trail!

Come Ride the West Chama ATV Trail

If you're going to be on vacation or visiting the Southwest Region of Colorado from May through October, make the West Chama ATV trail one of your destinations. This trail is small by most ATV trail standards, however it is a great ride. This will one of the most challenging 8-miles you'll encounter and is not for new or inexperienced ATVers. This ATV trail is part of the Rio Grande National Forest and is managed by the National Forest Service and the Conejos Peak Ranger District. This is designated as a multi-use trail, however because of its difficulty rating, use of this ATV trail by other ATVers, hikers, horseback riders or motorcyclists is very light.

As a bonus for the difficulty of the ride, this is a very scenic ATV trail as the Chama Basin is one of the most scenic areas on the Conejos Peak Ranger District. Most of the valleys in the Conejos Plateau Area are steep and narrow due to being formed by glaciers, the Chama River Valley is wide and spacious and ideal for taking on when your ride your ATV. There are steep cliffs of that consist mostly of colorful volcanic and sedimentary rock that surrounds the valley You will enjoy cruising around these embankments on your ATV. Erosion has intricately dissected these cliffs, leaving various shaped outcrops of rock. The fall is an especially good time to visit Chama Basin, when the slopes of aspen are in full splendor with brilliant hues of red, yellow, and orange.

On various areas of the ATV trail you will see waterfalls that cascade over the cliffs from the plateau above, if you are in need of water or a camp site. Both are abundant along the ATV trail. If this is your first outdoor excursion, definitely don't trust the drinking water and treat it before you drink it, otherwise you might find Montezuma's Revenge doesn't just occur within the bounds of Mexico. Be aware that in the spring, access to these camp sites may be difficult when the river is running high in the Spring. Always get a current map and plan your rides, certain trails may be re-routed without warning due to flooding, erosion and other natural occurrences.

An Easy ATV Ride at Talladega National Forest in Alabama

There are four loops for ATVing designated in the Talladega National Forest. The rating for all four of these trails is easy to moderate and this is a great ride for anyone who is new to ATVing and would like some actual trail riding experience.

Each of the loops is set up as follows:
9 Miles (15.0 Kilometers) Loop 1
5 Miles (8.33 Kilometers) Loop 2
2.5 Miles (4.17 Kilometers) Loop 3
6.5 Miles (10.83 Kilometers) Loop 4

These are multi-use trails and your likelihood of running into other traffic such as motorcycles, other ATV's and mountain bikes is very likely because these are such easy trails to navigate. If you're new to ATVing, ride defensively.

The ATV trail has gentle inclines and wide, sweeping turns and mostly smooth flat surface with very few obstacles to overcome. The part of the trail rated moderately difficult is in Loop 3 and has steeper grades, tight and steep turns, sections of rough terrain, and some rock and log obstacles.

Newer ATV riders will enjoy the chance to test out their handling skills on some of these rougher terrains. Make sure you have an experienced ATV rider with your to insure you learn to take on these embankments properly and learn proper handling skills of your ATV. If you feel that you're not ready, don't ride it. The trail will still be there when you have more experience.

The fee to get in the Talladega National Forest to ride your ATV is a very reasonable $3 and the entire ATV trailride runs about 6 hours for most people.

Fun at Wheeler Geologic Area ATV Road

If you're looking for a fun all out ATV ride, this is the place to be. The ATV road is for the more experienced ATVer as it is rated intermediate to difficult. If you have only been riding the easy trails up this point, maybe it is time to take a challenge of a more technical ATV ride, if you feel you're ready.

This is a multi use trail and you will fun into other traffic on this ATV trail ranging from ATVs to horseback riders to mountain bikers. This area is managed by the Rio Grande National Forest office and is open all year around. Rio Grande National Forest manages this ATV riding area and will want to inspect your ATV prior to riding for a spark arrestor, muffler and a proper braking system. You will be given a sticker that must be prominently displayed during your ride here.

This isn't the longest ATV trail you'll find but it certainly has a lot of personality in its difficulty level. This ATV trail is scenic and primitive and most surprisingly, despite its difficulty rating, this ATV trail gets a lot of traffic. The fact that it is primitive makes for a great ride on your ATV. The road is fairly level and with only 540 feet difference between its lowest and highest points. While its not an uneven ride for your ATV, you will find it is a rough one and can be very slow with much of the roadbed made up of embedded rocks. A round trip takes an average of 7 to 7 1/2 hours and that doesn't include any time that you might spend parking your ATV and exploring Wheeler Geologic Area itself. For maximum ride time, leave early, to allow yourself sufficient time for the trip, and time to explore, take pictures, etc.

Towards the end of the ATV trail you will find suitable areas for primitive campsites in case you plan to overnight it in this area. Just remember the golden rule of primitive camping, if you pack it in - pack it out!

ATV On Valdez Trail in Colorado

The Valdez ATV trail is part of the trail system located in Southwest Colorado and is open from the Spring through the Fall months. This ATV trail is part of the Rio Grande National Forest and is managed by the Conejos Peak Ranger District.

The rating of this ATV trail is moderate and it's a good transition for newer or inexperienced ATVers who are ready to make the jump from the easiest trails to an ATV riding experience that is a little more intense. This is a designated multi-use trail but one of the only types of traffic you will encounter will be hikers.

Since hikers are people and people tend to wander a little, be very aware when you ride this ATV trail. Sometimes they may not be exactly in the middle of the path and off far to one side. Pay close attention otherwise you might make a new hiking friend with the front end of your ATV and running into someone is not the perfect way to make a good first impression.

As with all National Forest managed lands be sure that you have your ATV permits and spark arrestor and muffler in place before you ride. The Rangers are very strict about ATVs being installed with those items prior to riding, especially the spark arrestor, as ATVs can and have caused wild fires.

The first mile of this trail is a fun ATV ride that climbs steeply and can be challenging for an inexperienced ATV rider. Seasoned ATVers will consider this section just a whole lot of fun! The trail joins a four-wheel drive road and then descends for the final 3 miles and ends at Las Flores Lake. Put up your fishing permit and your pole, there are no fish in Las Flores Lake but the scenary is beautiful.

If you're looking for a scenic and fun ATV ride, take a trip to Southwest Colorado and enjoy the Valdez Trail!

Tips for Kids Riding ATV Trails

One of the biggest bonuses of ATV riding is the fact it gets the entire family out of the house. Mom and Dad get away from work, finances and other worries. The kids get a break from their non-stop schedules and away from the television and video games.

ATV parks are fun for riders new to the sport of ATVing. Taking the whole family trail riding or even better for a long weekend of ATVing and camping is even better.

You may know everything there is to know about riding an ATV, but that doesn't mean your kids will listen or you might assume your kids know something about riding an ATV that they don't. It is best to sign your kids up to take lessons from a DOT approved riding course trainer. Many ATV riding clubs offer these courses. They will learn proper handling techniques, maneuvering skills and good safety practices to insure that all their ATV rides are safe ones.

Another important tip to teach your kids is to get in the habit of doing a pre-ride inspection. They don't have to know the technical reason behind each component of their ATV, but they do need to know the basics of checking brakes, spark plugs, chains and so on. Most problems start really small and learning to maintain their ATVs can't start too early.

Make sure your kids understand they need to wear proper ATV safety gear. Don't just guy it and expect them to wear it. Explain the dangers of riding without a helmet, tell them honestly what can happen when safe ATV riding practices are not used. When riding the ATV trails, teach your children to not follow too closely and teach them when fording a stream or when they are crossing any place on an ATV trail, to wait for the person behind them to catch up, everyone on the ATV trail should learn this technique.

Knowing the safety basics will teach your kids to be great ATV riders and not only will they have a good time, they'll have a safe time!

Battery Powered Vehicles Make Great Gifts For Kids

If you've been thinking about getting your child one of the fun, battery powered vehicles, you'll want to make the right choice for your child.

Good for Kids?
Battery powered vehicles are a benefit for small children. All children want to feel a little independence and this is a great way to let them do that. They can feel in control and drive their own battery powered vehicle. Being able to control where they go and how they get to those places, even if it's only around the yard, will help build self confidence and good hand/eye coordination skills in your child. This leads to a real sense of pride and accomplishment.

Is Your Child Ready?
If your child has never had the chance to ride on a battery-powered vehicle. Make sure your child is first of all ready for the responsibility of learning to control their vehicle. Second make sure your child gets instruction on how to control, start, stop, and steer their battery powered vehicle. The best way for your child to learn is to let them start off riding their battery powered vehicle on the lowest speed and make sure the area where your child is learning to ride is free from traffic and absolutely safe to ride on.

There are several kinds of battery powered vehicles for your child to choose from. All of them are durably built and sturdy rides. The batteries have a much longer life than the battery powered vehicles from even 5 years ago. These batteries are rechargeable and will last a long time giving your child years and years of fun use of their battery powered vehicle. Chargeable batteries are also good for the environment so if you like to live "green", you can feel positive about purchasing a battery powered vehicle for your child.

It is also a good idea to go ahead and purchase a replacement battery and when your child is riding their battery powered vehicle, simply take the other battery and swap them out when one needs to charge, that way your child can have hours and hours of fun on their batter powered vehicle.

Alaskan Wilderness ATV Adventure

Alaska is one of the last great frontiers and it is a great place to own an ATV. The extremes in weather changes make this a challenging place to ride your ATV. In Alaska, it is not uncommon to go from bright and sunny to dark and extremely inclimate weather in the blink of an eye.

The scenary in Alaska can not be beat. There are half a million acres of glaciers, mountain peaks, and beautiful valleys. The local wildlife includes Grizzly bears, wolf packs, lynx, rabbits, foxes and these forest residents sometimes wander into town. Be very aware of Grizzly bears, if one has been sited close by, it's probably best to delay your ride. A Grizzly can run up to 30MPH and there's no way to outrun it on your ATV. Contrary to popular belief playing dead won't faze a bear either. The best option is to quietly back off and never run away

ATVs are allowed on the Eklutna Lakeside Trail Sun-Wed, and on the Bird Creek Trails below 500-foot elevation point, both of these local trail systems are rated easy for the beginner and should provide hours of fun to new riders and experienced ATVers agree that the scenary is unmatched.

If you're interested in making a long weekend out of your stay in this area, there are campgrounds all over the area, there are picnic tables, fire pits, water, latrines, ranger station and an overflow camping area. The charge is only $10 per night.

If you ride your ATV in this area, there are required permits to be displayed on your ATV all times during your ride and a helmet is also required to be worn at all times. There are a number of terrain changes throughout this area. There are ATV trails with gravel, trails without, muddy holes, and small water areas to ford. This is a great area for letting newer ATVers get their wheels wet learning to handle their ATVs on various kinds of terrain.

Gulf of Alaska Trail - Great for Beginners

If you are new to the sport of ATVing and you're dying to the leave the confines of a flat, boring area. Come check out the Gulf of Alaska Trail.

This is a great ATV trail for beginning ATVers. This ATV trail has a lot of good features for those riders that want to develop their ATV skills and learn proper handling techniques. If you have the basic skills for handling your ATV but you want to learn to ride on a trail, this is a great place to work on those maneuvering skills and this in turn builds confidence in inexperienced ATV riders.

Also, these are multi-use trails and you are likely to run into the following types of traffic: hiking, biking, backpacking, horseback riding, dog sledding, ATV, skiing, snowmobiling, canoeing/kayaking. This ATV trail is only 12-miles in length and features a couple of loop arounds so if you are ready to turn around at any point during your ride, it is easy to do so.

To ride the Gulf of Alaska Trail, it begins in Eklutna Lake Valley, in the midst of the towering Chugach Mountains is a scenic area for year round recreation on your ATV. The lakeside trail is an old road, very easy and wide and remember to have your ATVs for the learning period. There are usually a good amount of users to this ATV area and be sure and get yourself a map and some extra clothing. The weather in Alaska can change to quickly and you and your ATV can get caught out in a bad situation that can develop quickly if you aren't aware and prepared. Layered clothing is the rule of the ride here.

This is a great ride for all ATVers whether new or experienced with many rides under their belt. On your next jaunt, make the Gulf of Alaska Trail your next destination for a fun and scenic ATV ride.

Electric ATVs - Good Safe Fun For Kids

Many parents will be purchasing electric ATVs for their children for Easter and other special occasions this spring. These ATVs make fantastic gifts for kids but they come with some responsibilities for safety that must be learned prior to riding.

The Peg Perego line has a fun selection that was designed with the safety of your child in mind. Most of these electric ATVs have 3 gears : 1st, 2nd, and reverse. Children up to age 8 are the recommended riders for the majority of these ATV products.

Is My Child Ready?
That is a question only you can answer. Look at your child objectively and decide if your child is ready for the responsibility of riding an ATV. Some children have fantastic eye/hand coordination at the age of 3 and others just don't develop those skills until they are a little older. Although these electric ATVs don't go fast, you want to be sure your child can properly maneuver his or her ATV.

It's a sad statistic that the majority of the accidents that occur with kids and ATVs occurred because the child was riding unsupervised or was placed on an ATV they weren't ready to handle. Never allow your children to ride their ATVs unsupervised and make sure they are riding in a safe riding area. If they are just rolling around the yard, remove any thing that could make the ATV off balance, this could include a humble garden hose. Make sure your child always wears safety gear. When operating any ATV, electric or otherwise, always make sure your child is wearing a helmet, the younger the child, the larger and heavier their head and there is even more of a need for a helmet. Talk to your child and let them know exactly why they need to wear a helmet, many children will appreciate a reason why a helmet is needed rather than simply being told to wear one.

Electric ATVs can be a lot of fun for your child as long as you choose a model made for your child's age and handling capabilities. Make sure they are well versed in the safe operating of their ATV and let 'em roll!

Camping and ATVing at Bankhead OHV Park in Alabama

Alabama has a hidden jewel in the middle of Alabama ATV country and Bankhead OHV park is it. This is a great place to ride your ATV. They can put into practice their safe riding skills and manuevering skills they learning in their safety classes. This will help build confidence in their riding and handling skills and a confident rider is a safe rider.

The Bankhead OHV Park is maintained by the Bankhead National Forest and as with all National Forest Lands, make sure you have your state approved ATV permit clearly displayed on your ATV and you must have a muffler/spark arrestor installed on your ATV prior to riding these trails. There are maps available at the Ranger's office and it is recommended you plan your ride on the most current map available as trails are closed periodically for land conservation efforts. The ATV trail isn't that long with only a total of 16 miles consisting of an 11 mile loop and a 5 mile loop, it's a little rocky in some places but lots of sand in others. It's a great place for newer ATV riders to learn different terrain techniques.

These ATV trails are updated with bathroom facilities with easy access to the ATV trailheads. This is a great way to spend a day with your ATV buddies or make it a full weekend and enjoy some primitive camping. The ATV trail can be looped around several times and even though newer ATV riders will get the most out of this OHV area. While riding your ATV on the campground's many trails, please remember to be safe. There are many steep mountain slopes and slippery creek trails, and it is important that you be responsible while riding on the trails. Do not do anything you know you shouldn't such as goofing off and taking chances with your buddies, attempting technical maneuvers you know you haven't developed the skills for or riding under the influence of drugs, as doing these things could end up seriously hurting you or someone else. Also, please be considerate of the trails, and do not litter or harm the environment in any way, and ride your ATV only in the designated areas.

Wolf Pen ATV Campground is a great place to spend a weekend with your ATV riding buddies enjoying nature and having fun!

Riding Your ATV at the Van Buren to Stockholm Rail Trail

Maine has a hidden jewel in the form of an ATV trail that is on the large side at 34-miles long round trip. Maine is beautiful in the fall, try to arrange an ATV trail ride then if possible for the changing leaves make the forests appear to be on fire. Spring is also great weather for ATVing this area. The best recommended times to ride are June through October.

This is a great ATV trail to take people who are newer to the sport of ATVing. The road is mostly hard packed gravel and it an easy ride as there is almost no change in the elevation. Experienced ATVers will love the foliage and scenary.

The ATV trail is narrow and there are loop arounds at various points along the way. There is little to no technical skill required to ride this ATV trail. You will see heavily wooded forests and there are some areas of wetland. Ride around these areas to avoid damaging the terrain with your ATV. If you happen to be riding in the early morning hours you are very likely to see the local wildlife residents. Bring your camera along, you won't get those close again without going to a zoo.

This is a state managed recreational trail be sure that you have your ATV registered and your permit properly displayed. You will also need to have your muffler and spark arrestor installed.

Since this is a gravel trail, be sure to wear your goggles and not rely on your full face mask for protection against flying gravel. A piece of gravel can enter your eye faster than you can blink and well fitted goggles are the only protection from that.

If you are looking to make a full weekend of riding your ATV, nearby Aroostook State Park offers wooded campsites with tables and fireplaces. If you want a more primitive camping experiences, there are campsites closer in to the ATV trails.

Keep Your Favorite ATV Trails Open - Become a Volunteer

A little time goes an even longer way than money. If you want to make sure that your favorite trails and riding areas stay open, donate your time or even better round up a group of your ATV riding friends and make a contribution to a volunteer clean up project or trail maintenance.

Most ATV riders are responsible people who aspire to leave the ATV trails better than they found them. There are a select number however, who with their actions ruin trails, destroy stream crossings, leave litter and do other damage to the trail systems. A good way you can help is to join the Adopt-a-Trail program which is usually coordinated through the Parks and Recreation Department of your State. If you don't have an active adopt a trail program in your area, be a trend setter and start one!

When you adopt a trail, you and/or your ATV group will be giving your word that you will help in creating new trails, relocating bad trails, repairing erosion damage to overused trails, or just trimming brush in spring. You may also find yourself doing a lot of humble trash clean up from folks who just don't understand the forest floor isn't a garbage receptacle.

You can further help by organizing safety seminars to educate ATVers in the ways of proper trail etiquette and you can further implement the teachings of Treadlightly.org and teach more ATVers how to ride environmentally friendly.

Fun ATV Trails in the San Juan National Forest

There are some fun ATV trails to ride at the San Juan National Forest. Wolf Creek is just 9-miles west of Wolf Creek Pass and leads to Wolf Creek Campground. After a day of riding your ATVs, enjoy the camping areas and if you brought your fishing license, have a great time casting your line into one of the two stocked fishing ponds that are located directly behind the campground.

West Fork Trailhead is also known as Rainbow Lake Trail and is a lightly used trail. The first portion of this trail passes through private property. Be sure to stay only on the marked trail and leave everything as you found it.

East Fork Campground contains some fun ATVing. The trailheads for Coal Creek and Quartz Ridge are nearby and the Elwood Pass trailhead is also very near here. Blanco Basin has three nearby trails that access the unroaded country and go towards the east. The Navajo Peak Trail and V-Rock Trail can be reached from the Buckles Lake Road (FDR 663), about seven miles south of the campground via Highway 84. The Blanco Basin Road (FDR 657) accesses the Leche Creek Trail. These trails intersect with several entry/ exit points. Because these trails are narrow with room for only one ATV, be sure to make note of the turnaround points so you know when and where to turn your ATV around and head back to camp.

The Chimney Rock Archaeological Area is four miles from the Ute campground. Pull your ATV over and enjoy a guided tour that will show you a large pueblo that was built nearly 1,000-years ago. La Plata means "silver," and over the years these mountains have yielded quite a lot of that. When you ride the trails in this area, you are bound to see abandoned mines. Never enter a mine. There are gases that can kill you in many of these old mines. View them from the trail for greatest safety.

Enjoy your ATV trailride through San Juan National Forest!

ATVing at Los Padres National Forest

There are 3 recreational areas in the Los Padres National Forest: Figueroa Mountain, Sage Hill and Santa Ynez. The Figueroa Mountain Recreation Area is a secluded and lush trail system with occasional closings due to mud/dirt slides. If you happen to be visiting in the spring months you will see an amazing blanket of wild flowers. If you enjoy fishing and you have your fishing license with you, you can fish for trophy-sized trout in the streams. If you're riding your ATV on the designated trails in the summer, bring along some insect spray as the gnats can be thick. Camping is allowed in one of the five campgrounds at The Figueroa Mountain Area.

The Sage Hill Group Recreation Area is the next area that is available in the Los Padres National Forest. This area has been designed for larger groups of people to use in the day and at night. Reservations for using this area are highly recommended. At the recreation are you will find a centralized cooking and eating area, flush toilets, water faucets, and numbered parking spurs. During the winter months, the Sage Hill Area may be closed off due to high water. Call before you go out there to make sure the area is open for use.

Santa Ynez Recreation Area is the third area that you can enjoy on your ATV. There are two off-highway routes for two-wheeled vehicles and ATV's accessed from the Canyon: Camuesa and Buckhorn roads. Both are well-maintained fire access roads, suitable for beginning riders. Camuesa road is 16 miles long, beginning at Upper Oso Campground. Buckhorn Road forks off Camuesa road 4 miles up and is 9 miles long. These routes are for two-wheeled vehicles and ATV's only. Camping is allowed in this area as well. So you can make a long weekend of ATVing fun with your friends at the Los Padres National Forest!

ATVing at Little River Falls

This fun ATV excursion is located on Lookout Mountain in Cherokee and DeKalb Counties, east of Fort Payne, Alabama. This is a fairly busy area. Approximately 300,000 people visit this park every year primarily between April and October. Visitation is the highest April through June, September and October, lowest attendance is in January.

The summers are warm and humid. The winters are cool but normally not frigid. Both spring and fall are mild, making this ATV ride a great destination anytime of year. There are no fees to ride your ATV in this area, however you will need to register your ATV with the NPS Ranger and you will have to show a valid driver's license. The permit must be displayed on your ATV at all times. Your ATV will be checked for proper braking, spark arrestor and noise muffler and then if your ATV passes the test, you will be issued a permit to ride the trails around Little River Falls.

The forest is thick and there are a lot of great sites to take in on your ATV ride through Little River Falls. The falls are definitely picture-worthy and will be flowing with even more beauty if it is soon after a rainstorm. If you're looking for someplace to picnic and camp, you can set up camp with your ATV riding buddies at Canyon Mouth Park which has barbecue grills, picnic tables, a pavilion, bathrooms, wading, hiking, fishing (if you have a license). Best of all this area is free.

Make Alabama a destination on your ATV travel planning journal with a trip to Little River Falls.

ATVing in George Washington National Forest

George Washington National Forest has a challenging ATV trail for your next ride. The South Pedlar ATV Trail System is a well designed looping network of approximately 25 miles of trails designed specifically for ATVs. The trail system features trails ranging from wide and easy to narrow, twisting and challenging. None of the trails in this ATV trail system are overly steep or technically challenging. If you have been riding an ATV just a short time and you are well acquainted with the basics of riding your ATV, you will have a great time on these trails.

You do not have to pay a fee or get a permit to ride these ATV trails. However you do have to allow the Park Rangers to inspect your ATV and verify that you have a spark arrestor and noise muffler in place, prior to riding your ATV in this area. The views on this trail system are varied and many. As you ride your ATV in this area you are likely to see vistas that stretch out and touch the sky, groves of large trees, and spectacular mountainside blooms in season. These are multi-use trails and you will be sharing them with other ATVers, motorbikes, and mountain bikes. This ATV trail is easy to get to and has two trailhead parking lots, both accessed off SR 130.

If you're in the mood to take your ATV to a long and winding trail for a long weekend of fun with your riding buddies, check out the George Washington National Forest and South Pedlar ATV Trail System!

ATVing Fun In Alaska

One of the biggest complaints new ATVers have is that there are not enough "easy" rated trails for them to learn to handle their ATVs on. As you know, it is easy to ride your ATV in a designated area, but riders also need practice handling the unexpected that can occur on the ATV trails.

Ellutna Lake is a very busy Alaskan Lake that happens to have a very fun ATV trail around it. This level of difficulty is very easy and this is great place for beginners to learn to handle their ATVs, hone their trail riding skills, and learn greater maneuvering techniques on their ATVs.

These are multi-use ATV trails and you will run into people hiking, biking, backpacking, horseback riding, dog sledding, other ATVers, people who are Skiing and Snow machining. You will also see numerous people canoeing/kayaking out on the lake no matter what time of year it is.

This is not a long ATV trail measuring in at only 12-miles and would make for a great day of riding for your ATVing group. Along with handling skills, this is a great area for new ATVers to learn to drive friendly with other trail traffic and learn proper techniques for when one meets up with hikers and horseback riders. You never know a horse's temperament, to avoid spooking horses, always pull your ATV over and cut the engine. When the horseback rider is about 100 yards down the trail, restart your ATV and maintain a good safe distance between yourself and the horses.

The nearby Chugach Mountains surround this valley lake and this area is very scenic no matter what time of year you bring your ATV to this area to ride. There are public use cabins available if you intend on camping out. Bring your camera to capture those incredible scenary views and make it a long weekend of ATVing with your friends.

Riding Wasatch-Cache National Forest ATV Trails In Wyoming

Wyoming is a great place to own an ATV and the Dead horse ATV trail system that is located in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest is a great place to ride. The ATV trail system located within the Wasatch-Cache National Forest was developed based on response to numerous requests by the public to create riding trails in a National Forest Area.

Like most National Forest lands, you will need to follow some regulations to ride legally on these lands. You will need to obtain a permit for riding your ATV on these trails, and that permit much be displayed in a prominent location at all times. The Forest Rangers will inspect your ATV to insure it is in good basic working order, your spark arrestor and noise muffler are installed correctly and that you have the proper safety gear along for the ride which includes goggles and a full face DOT approved helmet for riding your ATV.

Be aware of mountain storms. It can be deceiving to start your ATV ride in the morning on a clear and sunny day and then in the afternoon as you're going up the mountain with your friends, violent storms have developed. The weather can change rapidly. If you see storms coming, park your ATV and take cover. Dangerous lightning and hail are both possibilities, and never take shelter under a tree.

Wasatch-Cache National Forest has a great weekend of riding in store for you and your friends, bring your gear and camp out and make a great weekend of ATVing fun happen!

Superstition Wilderness ATV Riding

This is a well developed trail system in Arizona and has a great ATVing time for riders of every skill level. The forest was first designated in 1939 and by 1984 had grown to 160,200.

If you are riding in the summer, bring plentiful water and in winter dress in layers to handle the cold that can feel really bitter when you're rolling forward on an ATV directly into a Northern wind. The view is worth a little seasonal discomfort, everyone agrees on that.

This entire area is beautiful rolling country which is surrounded by vertical terrain you can see "Weaver's Needle," from almost any point on this ATV ride as this nationally known landmark stands over 4500-feet high.

There is a network of some 180 miles of"system" trails serving the Superstition Wilderness and contiguous areas. Their condition varies from excellent to poor. Signs are installed at trail junctions, but unfortunately they are often damaged or stolen. There are also a number of miles of "unmaintained trails" shown on the map which may be anything from an abandoned cat-road to a path beaten out by humans and/or cattle. Some trails are hazardous to horses. All trails are closed to bikes of any type. Maximum group size is 15 persons.

Some of the shorter trails include Hieroglyphic Trail which is only 1 mile long and leads to Indian petroglyphs, Woodbury Trail which is just 2 miles long and is built upon an old mining road. Bull Pass Trail 1.6 mile connecting trail to Terrapin trail which is a scenic trail that is just under 3 miles. Black Mesa Trail is 3 miles in length and has some easy terrain to navigate and is very scenic.

Dutchman's Trail is one of the most well known and longest trails in the area. If you know the story of the Lost Dutchman's Mine this is part of the trail to supposedly find it. Many people have tried to find his lost treasure but so far, no one has.

Great Places to Ride Your ATV in Mississippi

In Mississippi, there are a number of great areas to ride your ATV such as Holly Springs, Tombigbee, Delta, Bienville, De Soto, and Homochitto National Forests.

These National Forests offer up some of the best ATVing to be had in the great state of Mississippi. The Holly Springs National Forest is nearly 150,000-acres of forest. It also has numerous lakes in case the urge to fish suddenly strikes. Tombigbee is a smaller National Forest coming in at only 66,000-acres. The nation's only bottomland hardwood National Forest is the Delta. This 59,000-acre area is rich in wildlife. With its system of green tree reservoirs it is especially attractive to migratory waterfowl. The 178,000-acre Bienville National Forest, in the center of the state, offers a variety of terrains to ride your ATV upon. The forest is named after Jean Baptiste Bienville, who also founded Mobile, Alabama, Natchez, and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Desoto is the largest National Forest in Mississippi. The forest covers over 500,000 acres and is thickly foliaged with pine trees. These are the famous "black-water" streams which are so colored because they are tinted by tannic acid from decaying vegetation on the forest floor.

There are numerous designated trails for ATVers and most of the trails are rated easy to intermediate. The Shockaloe Base Camp I is located right next to the Shockaloe Horse Trail. This is a fun trail to ride for beginners and experienced ATVers alike as it is densely foliaged in piney-woods. If you're looking for some history in your ATV ride, check out the Bienville Pines Scenic Area and Trail. This area has over 180 acres and is the largest known block of "old-growth" pine timber in Mississippi. The towering pines, many over 200 years old, continue to thrive and grow in this area.

When you ride the Shockaloe Horse Trail vkeep on the lookout for the red-cockaded woodpecker, an endangered species which nests only in living pines. Beautiful scenic views of the lake will have you reaching for your camera as you ride this trail system.

Mississippi has an abundance of scenic areas to ride your ATV upon, make this great state your next destination for a long weekend of camping and ATV riding fun.

The Best ATV Trails to Ride in Chequamegon National Forest in Wisconsin

The name of the National Forest is pronounced SHO-WAH-MA-GON, which in the Ojibwa Indian language means "place of shallow water". This refers to Chequamegon Bay which extends north from Ashland, Wisconsin into Lake Superior. The Chequamegon National Forest is a very scenic and unspoiled wilderness to explore on your ATV.

Totaling nearly 850,000 acres, the Chequamegon National Forest was formed by ice age glaciers that sculpted the land surface, lopping off hilltops and leaving small lakes in their wake. There is wildlife watching in abundance in this area as well as hunting. During the season, there are opportunities to bag black bear, ruffed grouse, and white-tailed deer.

If you came to ride your ATV, you won't be disappointed. Chequamengon has over 200-miles of ATV trails on three separate trail systems. Your ATV ride will take you through rolling forests, meadowlands and wetlands.

The Flambeau Trail can be found in the Park Falls District. This trail has five access points where vehicles and trailers can be safely parked. The trail has two interconnecting loops for a total distance of 55-miles. This trail is rated as one of the top 20 Trails in America to ride an ATV upon.

For more of a challenge, there is the Dead Horse Run Trail in the Glidden District, this particular trail is rated Intermediate to Hard. This trail is 78 miles long, with several loops to choose from. One wet and wild ride is found on the Medford Ranger District you can find the Pekinstown Motorized Trail. This trail embraces the Chequamegon Waters Flowage and is 20.2 miles in length.

The Best ATV Trails in Allegheny National Forest

If you're looking for a fun ride on your ATV in Pennsylvania, check out Allegheny National Forest. This historic forest has several different ATV trails for you to enjoy.

The Marienville trail is shared with mountain bikes, but don't let that stop you from riding your ATV there. There are about 35-miles of trails that interconnect and it's a good winding ride. Rocky Gap ATV Trail is about 20-miles in length and there is a designated trailhead, however it is permissible to access this trail anywhere it crosses a public road.

Timberline ATV Trail is located just south of the Rocky Gap Trail System and is a great ride. Just like Rocky Gap, you can either enter this trail at the trailhead or anywhere it crosses a public road. This trail also connects to the Marienville ATV Trail if you're interested in crossing over at any point when you're planning your ATV ride. Willow Creek ATV Trail is a 10.8 mile loop trail located along Forest Road (FR) 137, approximately two miles south of SR 346 and 11 miles west of Bradford. All of these trails are multi-use trails and traffic will include snowmobiles during the colder months, hikers, and mountain bikes.

If you want to make a long weekend out of it, camping is permitted as long as you are not on the shores and you stay within 1500 feet inland of the timberline around the Allegheny Reservoir, this applies for all areas except designated campsites.

ATVing at Moose River Recreation Area

If you're going to be in the West Canada area and you're looking for a fun ride on your ATV, check out the Moose River Recreation Area. The trail system is located in the largest block of public land in the Adironacks that is accessible by a vehicle. When you ride your ATV in this area, you will see many types of scenary. Flatlands, lush forests, herb and grass plains around the Moose and Red Rivers and ridges and mountains. If you're an experienced rafter, the Moose River is not for the faint of heart, this river offers up some of the most intense whitewater rafting and turns into a slow drift throught the more isolated wilderness areas.

There are numerous designated campsites and picnic areas and the ATV trails are clearly marked with colored disks making them easy to follow. Fishing is allowed in these waters and you will have the opportunity to catch brook trout, brown trout, splake, and kokanee salmon.

Sly Pond Trail climbs a little over 5-miles up the side of Little Moose Mountain and then descends into Sly Pond. The pond has acidic waters and contains no fish. Lost Ponds Trail which is another mile down the trail is a popular fishing spot and you're sure to catch trout if you make a stop there. If you brought your canoe along for the weekend, Hell Diver Pond Trail leads to a great place to get your canoe wet and enjoy a serene paddle around the pond.

The trails are due to change without notice, so always call before you haul and remember when you ride on these pristine lands, leave them better than when you arrived.

ATV Fun at Indian Creek Trail

The San Isabel National Forest in South Central Colorado has a jewel of an ATV riding trail called Indian Creek. The trail is 15-miles long and is rated easy so the people in your group that are new to ATVing don't have to pass time at the trailhead going in circles while everyone else rides the difficult ATV trails. This is a trail system that all ATVers can enjoy. This is also a great place to camp at the designated points around the area and make a whole weekend out of riding your ATVs with your friends.

At this ATV trail, newer ATVers can learn to trail ride. A good rule of thumb is to wait until the rider behind you catches up so no one gets left behind. Also never follow the ATVer in front of you too closely or you may wind up smacking your riding partner's ATV. Getting the chances to navigate your ATV on actual trails is great experience for newer ATVers.

In addition to picking up some new riding skills, new riders will also learn how to properly share the trails. These is a multi-use ATV trail so be aware you will be sharing this trail during the riding season of May 15 through November 15 with all kinds of traffic from other ATV riders to hikers to motorcycle and mountain bikers.

This is fun ATV ride for everyone because it is never truly a flat trail. It gently rolls up and down so new riders get good practice taking their ATVs up and down gentle inclines. There is a great view from every point on the trail and if you are riding in the early morning or late afternoon hours you will see a lot of deer in the area.

Indian Creek is ready and waiting to be your next ATV riding excursion. Gather up your group, pack up your camping equipment and make a full weekend of ATVing fun!
