ATVing in Pennsylvania: Fun and Educational
One of the original 13 U.S. colonies, the state of Pennsylvania contains an abundant wealth of the country's early history. Pennsylvania contains lush grassy fields, bright green forests and beautiful streams and lakes, and you will be able to experience all of this while you ride your ATV along the states' many trails and riding areas. Many of the ATV trails in Pennsylvania have some historic context, and most of them have educational materials posted at the trails themselves, so you can learn a bit about the history of the state while having fun on the trail with your ATV.
In order to ride your ATV in the state of Pennsylvania you must have your vehicle registered with the state's recreation management agency, which requires a small fee that varies county to county. Riding your ATV on any type of paved road is completely prohibited in Pennsylvania, except for when you are crossing highways. Another thing that the state requires is that you wear your safety helmet at all times while you are riding you ATV. Wearing you helmet is simply common sense, but those who are caught not wearing one will suffer legal repercussions, mainly in the way of a large fine. The minimum age requirement for ATV riding in Pennsylvania is 16, though children 10 and older are allowed to ride on public land, and all persons 10-16 are required to have a safety certificate in order to ride.
If you are looking for an ATV experience that is fun as well as educational, then head on over to Pennsylvania.

Oklahoma ATVing Fun
Home to vast fields of grass and large wild forests, Oklahoma is the ideal destination for the ATV enthusiast who is looking to get in touch with mother nature. The many ATV trails of Oklahoma offer different opportunities, but generally speaking you will be able to ride your ATV on some trails with beautiful tall trees and possibly be treated to some views of the area's native wildlife. You will also probably have the opportunity to ride your ATV through some mud as well while in Oklahoma, if that is your thing.
The state of Oklahoma does not require that you be registered with any agencies in order to ride your ATV, but you must have an Operator's License if you wish to cross highways while in the state. While in Oklahoma you must remember to stay in the unpaved USFS roads that serve as ATV riding areas, as riding your ATV on paved roads is strictly prohibited, except for crossing highways. Another requirement in Oklahoma is that you must ride your ATV only in the day. No night riding is allowed in the state. Oklahoma does not have any type of regulations as to how much your ATV can weigh or how wide it is, so if you have a monster of a vehicle then this is the perfect place to ride.
There is also no minimum age requirement for ATV riders, and a safety certificate is also not needed. If you are looking to ride your ATV without some of the rules and regulations that other states have, or if you just wanted to be treated to some beautiful views of Mother Nature, Oklahoma is the place to go.

The minimum ATV riding age in New York is 16, but only if the rider has earned a safety certificate. Riding Your ATV in the Lone Star State
Texas truly is a whole other country when it comes to ATV riding. Much like the State of California, Texas has mountains, flat lands, beach areas, hills, woodlands and deserted rocky terrain all in various areas of the State. No matter what kind of riding your prefer whether it is trail riding or rock climbing, you will find it in the State of Texas.
Texas is also a very friendly ATV owning state. Without a lot of requirements for being within the letter of the law. The minimum age for riding an ATV is 14-years of age and all riders 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult also on an ATV. Your ATV must be licensed with the Department of Motor Vehicles and a DOT approved helmet and eye protection must be worn if you will be riding your ATV on any federally managed lands such as National Forest Areas.
Texas has a good number of National Forests such as Angelina, Davy Crockett, Sabine, Sam Houston, Caddo/LBJ where you may ride your ATV as long as you stay on the marked and designated trail systems. It is a great idea to always call ahead and get a map to make sure you are planning your riding route around the most current information possible, as with most trail systems. These are periodically closed off and new trails are opened for ATV riding to allow the used vegetation to reclaim itself and new growth to occur.
Most of the State of Texas has mild winters and scorching hot summers. Be sure to pack along adequate water for your ATV ride, becoming dehydrated can lead to mistakes that can cause an accident or injury. Also, riding with a group can make your time on your ATV even more fun when you're sharing the fun of the ride. There are some great groups you can check out in Texas by visiting their websites:Cedar Creek Mudcats at http://www.expage.com/cedarcreekmudcatsatv. Also, Centex Quadholics is a fun group for anyone that loves to get muddy on their ATV, you can visit their website here: http://www.centexquadaholics.com/.
Texas has some great riding and fantastic groups who love their ATVs as much as you do, if you're a resident or you will be visiting, make sure you meet all the minimum requirements and get out there and have a blast on your ATV!

Tennessee - Downhome ATV fun
Tennessee is a great State for owning and riding an ATV. Besides the great terrain and good riding weather a good part of the year,Tennessee does not have a huge amount of regulations for being an ATV owner.
The State of Tennessee does not have a minimum age for ATV riders and you are not required to register your ATV. The only main requirements come if you will be riding your ATV on any federally managed lands, such at State or National Forests, like Cherokee National Forest or Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. In those cases you must you must get a riding permit that is prominently displayed and your brakes and headlights must be in good working condition. Also, you must wear a helmet and eye protection in the form of safety goggles whenever you are riding your ATV. A licensed adult must accompany any ATVers under the age of 16-years of age, also on an ATV in the National Forest areas. In order to preserve the pristine nature of these ATV trails, periodically trails are shut down and new ones are opened to allow the vegetation to reclaim itself and in doing so the trails remain lush and ready for a new generation of ATVers.
Riding with a group of like-minded ATVers can be fun. The State of Oregon and ATVing
The earliest American Settlers loved Oregon for its unspoiled, lush beauty. Today, ATVers from all over love the State of Oregon for the same reason.
You must have your ATV registered by the Motor Vehicle Bureau in your area and there is a nominal fee that slightly varies county by county. The minimum age for riding your ATV in Oregon is 12 years of age. If you are going to be riding on any federally managed lands, such at State or National Forests, you must get a riding permit that is prominently displayed and your brakes and headlights must be in good working condition. Also, you must wear a helmet and eye protection in the form of safety goggles whenever you are riding your ATV. A licensed adult must accompany any ATVers under the age of 16-years of age, also on an ATV.
The State of Oregon has fourteen National Forests, most allow ATV riding in clearly marked and designated trail areas. Always call ahead before your haul your ATV out to a riding area to insure the ATV trails are open and it's legal to ride. In order to ride on in these National Forest areas you must have a spark arrestor and a noise muffler in place before you ride and before you are given a permit to ride by the Rangers, your ATV will be inspected to ensure these items are in place on your vehicle.
There are also a good number of ATV riding groups in Oregon. Big Bear Countree is a newer ATV group that you might like to be a part of, you can see their website at http://www.bigbearcountree.com/. Another good group is the Central Oregon ATV Club and they have a website at http://www.comacclub.org. Riding an ATV is a great way for a family to do an activity together that involves plenty of fresh air and fun and gets everyone away from the telephone, cell phone, video games, internet and television. If you live in Oregon or you will be visiting, make sure you are up to par on the rules for riding your ATV and get your family together go riding!

You can take the kids along for the ride, or if you and your favorite someone want to spend a weekend touring the lush forests and enjoying a little time for two, ATVing is a great way to do it.
If you want to be to the letter of the law (and you do) for riding your ATV in North Carolina, there are a few rules and regulations you need to be aware of. You do not need to register your ATV with the State and there is no current minimum age for riding an ATV. However, all riders must wear a DOT approved helmet and eye protection at all times.
North Carolina has four National Forests that allow ATV riding. They are the Croatan, Nantahala, Pisgah, and Uwharrie National Forests. There are miles and miles of trails to ride your ATV upon. Stay on the designated trails and always get a current map from the Forest Ranger's Office to make sure you're planning your ride around the most current information. Minnesota ATV Riding
Minnesota ATV Riding
If you own an ATV in Minnesota, you're very lucky. In the wintertime you may feel like you need a snowmobile more than an ATV, but once those winter snows melt and your'e left with the lush terrain to ride your ATV on in the Spring through the Fall, you will forget all about snowmobiles.
The rules and regulations for owning an ATV in Minnesota are not too extensive. Your ATV must be registered through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and you will be given a sticker that must be prominently displayed at all times on your ATV when you are riding. The minimum age for riding an ATV for a child is 12-years of age as well as all ATV riders from the ages of 12-16 years of age must have a licensed and registered adult along for the ride who is also riding an ATV. Additionally, you must be wearing a DOT approved helmet and eye protection at all times.
Minnesota's National Forests, Chippewa and Superior, had suffered a lot of damage from a certain number of ATVers who were not following the good ideas put forth by Treadlightly and a lot of damage occurred on the trail systems. Minnesota made some changes to their OHV regulations for riding on these lands in November 2005, that designated very specific trail areas for ATVing and only those areas may be traveled upon by OHVs. Be sure to get a map of the current trail systems at the Ranger's station as ATV trails are closed frequently to allow different areas of vegetation to reclaim itself.
Minnesota offers up many months of good ATVing weather, now that you know the proper rules and regs - load up your ATV and go riding with your favorite group of friends.

Riding Your ATV in Michigan
Michigan has icy cold winters and but the spring, summer and fall are fantastic ATVing weather. The summers don't tend to get blazing hot and for the most part riding your ATV on any of the trails in Michigan can be a great day or even a long weekend as most of the trails allow camping so consider bringing your whole family along and making a weekend out of it.
The rules and regulations for owning an ATV in Michigan are pretty light when compared to a lot of States. Anyone riding an ATV must have working brake systems, a noise muffler attached - the decibel cut off for ATVs is 90 dbs, and if you are on an ATV, you must be wearing a DOT approved helmet and eye protection at all times. Headlights are required only if you will be riding your ATV at night.
Michigan has three National Forests that allow ATV riding. The Hiawatha National Forest, The Huron-Manistee National Forest and the Ottawa National Forest. The Rangers do require that you ride only on designated ATV trails and that you never go "trail blazing". Hiawatha is especially interesting to ATV as they have densely foliaged ATV trails and four great lakes islands to explore.

The Great State of Georgia and Your ATV
Georgia is an often-overlooked destination for riding your ATV. If you're going on vacation or you happen to be lucky enough to live there, you might find some great riding areas outside your usual destinations.
One of the best things about owning or riding an ATV on vacation in Georgia is the fact that they are very low in the regulations department. You need only have a working braking system and headlights if you're going to be riding at night or in the early morning hours on any Federally managed lands. Additionally, and you do this one anyway, you must wear a helmet and eye protection at all times when operating an ATV. The two national forests areas in Georgia both allow ATV riding. The Chattahoochee and Oconee National Forests both have marked and designated ATV riding trails for anyone that loves to get out there and roll with nature. Because riding conditions can change dramatically, always call the Ranger's office before you haul your ATV all the way out there only to find the ATV riding trails are closed. You can reach the Ranger's office at 706 485-3180.
There are also a good number of riding organizations in Georgia. If you live in Georgia and would like to make some new friends that love to ride their ATVs as much as you do, check out some of these fine folks: Durhamtown ATV Riding has a website located at http://www.geocities.com/durhamtownresort and is an actual riding resort where you can ride your ATV to your heart's content as well as fish, hike, hunt and more. This would be a great get-away for the whole family. If you enjoy a wilder ride on your ATV, check out the GA Extreme Riders at http://www.gaxtremeatvclub.com. And last but not least, another great group to explore is The Peach State ATV Riders and their website can be reached at http://www.geocities.com/peachstateatvriders/index.html .

All ATVers must wear a DOT approved helmet and eye goggles when riding their vehicles.
Your ATV must have lights if riding in the early morning or later afternoon hours, and your brakes will be examined to make sure they meet the minimum safety requirements. A noise canceling muffler must be installed on your ATV prior to riding on any federally managed lands, also a spark arrestor must be in place prior to riding as the risk of forest fires in these areas is quite high at certain times of the year.
The Forest Service asks that your "Tread Lightly" and follow the objectives put forth by the Treadlightly organization to insure that future generations will have pristine ATV trails to ride on.

California has some strict emissions laws for ATVers. Your ATV must be green stickered in order to ride on most publicly owned lands, meaning that your ATV meets or exceeds certain emission standards.
Additionally, California has some other rules and regulations you should know before riding your ATV. All ATV riders must be 14-years of age or older and ATVers between the ages of 14-18-years of age must ride with a licensed adult. Your ATV must be registered with the State of California in an effort to cut down on the number of stolen ATVs. This program of registration has met with a lot of success. Your ATV must have working headlights and your front and rear braking systems will be tested at the time your register your ATV. A noise canceling muffler at 86 decibels or less is required to be installed on your ATV at all times when riding. A baby cries at about 100 decibels to give you an idea of how loud that is. You must have a spark arrestor in place on your ATV prior to riding in California and all ATV riders must wear a DOT approved helmet at all times when riding their ATVs.

ATVing in Alaska
ATVing in Alaska
Alaska with its frozen tundra will provide a lot of great ATVing. There are two National Forests in Alaska. The Chugach National Forest located in Anchorage no longer allows ATV use on their trails as they are very deteriorated, however you may ride snowmobiles in the area before February 16th and after April 30th of each year.
Tongass is the other National Forest Located in Ketchikan, Alaska and they have designated a good number of trails exclusively for OHV and ATV use. Be sure to stay on the trails, a lot of the area was eroded over the years from people not being aware and responsible when riding their ATVs and OHVs on the land. As with all National Forest Lands, be sure that you have your noise muffler installed and your spark arrestor in place before you ride. There are three kinds of bears as well located in this national forest, be aware when you ride these forest lands at all times.
If you're looking for some good ATV clubs to join in Alaska, check out the Alaska ATV Club website is located at http://www.alaskaatvclub.org and they are located in South Central Alaska but all Alaskan OHVers are welcome. They make safety a top priority and share information on various trails for the best information on riding in Alaska available.
Alaska doesn't have a lot of restrictions on ATVers. However all riders must be a minimum of 14-years old and all ATV riders must wear a DOT approved helmet when operating their vehicle at all times.

Riding Your ATV in Alabama
Riding Your ATV in Alabama
If you live in or will be visiting Alabama in the near future, you're in for some ATV riding fun. Alabama has very few ATV riding restrictions as do a lot of states.
Some of the best trails to ride in Alabama are located on National Forest land and those lands generally come with some rules and regulations that you must follow. There are two main National Forests in Alabama that allow ATVing on the premises.
The first is Bankhead National Forest and the second is Talladega National Forest. As with all National Forest lands, you must wear your DOT approved ATV helmet at all times when riding on these lands, and you must stay on the marked trail systems. Going off trail (trail blazing) and will get you a ticket and escorted off the property so fast your head will spin. Another two items you must have installed on your ATV prior to riding is a spark arrestor and a noise muffler.
The other two National Forests, Conecuh and Tuskegee no longer allow ATV riding on their premises.
Since the ATV trails change at Bankhead and Talladega frequently because much used ATV trails are closed to allow the land to reclaim itself, be sure and get yourself the most current map so you can plan your ATV ride. You can get information about maps by calling the National Forests in Alabama Supervisor's Office at 334-832-4470 Monday through Friday during office hours (7:30 - 4:00) or any one of the six Ranger Districts.
