Lake Leavitt, ATVers Love It
Lake Leavitt, ATVers Love It Take an ATV break by taking some down time at Lake Leavitt Reservoir. Sometimes, even ATVers need a getaway from their getaway activities. Lake Leavitt is part of the Emigrant Wilderness, which in turn is part of a larger area of glacial creation. The countryside is just breathtaking in beauty. It is a very high area, and is under snow up to the months of June at times. It stays cool and can go to freezing anytime of the year at night. The history of the place goes back to Native American use 10, 000 years ago. In the 1800s groups traveling west were encouraged to take routes through the mountains here, but the passage was too harsh and it was eventually abandoned.
Now, you may ride your ATVs on the outskirts of Lake Leavitt and the interior is now designated as a US Land Management Designated Primitive Area. ATV, OHV, any wheel at all is now not permitted within the boundaries. However. An ATV group can walk in or saddle in, and a permit is needed to spend the night, though camping is okay. If you ride on the exterior ATV trails outside the area during the day, it's a great place to set up camp at night. Group size is mandated and groups are kept apart by a few miles, so everyone can experience the "feel" of the wilderness, as much as there is left of it. For an ATVer, it is nice to sometimes just stop and smell the wildflowers after a great day of ATVing fun.

Johnson Valley, ATV Designated Area
Johnson Valley, ATV Designated Area Johnson Valley is near Barstow, California and is the perfect place for ATV enthusiasts. It is especially set up for off road riding. The terrain has a great variety of grades and landscape material to test your prowess and ability to handle your equipment. An ATV driver can jump off at Old Woman Springs Road or Camp Rock Road from highway 247 to enter this area. These are dirt roads, and a bunch of competitive events are centered around Anderson Dry Lake and Soggy Dry Lake near Camp Rock Road. This is a very user friendly ATV area. The regulations and rules are basic to any outdoor recreational area, common sense (you are not allowed to burn any wood with nails in it for fires - a duh moment, considering all the tires in the vicinity), and courtesy (don't bother the wildlife, or trash the area.) Camping is fine, as long as no one is blocking any road in a riding area with their camp; common sense again. The biggest bit of common sense an ATV driver should follow is the warning at the eastern boundary of Johnson Valley, DO NOT ENTER. No ATVer will want to wander onto Twenty-Nine Palms Marine Air-Ground Combat Center, where in all likelihood you could be hurt by the firing range practitioners or at the very least, arrested for trespassing. Any ATVer will love the chance to drive rolling hills, unfettered valleys, dry lake beds, sandy washes, and steep climbs up mountains. Just about every condition an ATV driver will ever experience is here, just waiting around every turn in the ATV trail.

ATVers say Hot Dog! To Hot Dog Hill
ATVers say Hot Dog! To Hot Dog Hill Many ATV and OHV enthusiasts know Hot Dog Hill. One of many hills located in the Los Coyotes Indian Reservation Hot Dog Hill is a particularly grueling run in an area know for what is termed "rock crawling." Though the main group involved is OHV which are larger than most ATVs, there certainly are ATVs welcome on the rocky terrain of the area. Some of the other roads have names such as, Rough Road, Left Turn Hill, Squeeze Rock, and dangerous Road. Hot Dog Hill is a nice spot to stop and eat on a run. This is an excellent way to get the kinks out of ATV gears, and see just where the strain will hit parts. There are rock falls that will simply eat your vehicle if you let them. An ATV driver can learn a lot and lose a lot in these areas. The Hot Dog Hill area is a learning curve for many. Some just show up to watch the lessons take place. This is not the best place for youngsters; it can be dangerous if no one has he time to keep them under complete surveillance. There are many accidents where vehicles actually fall into crevasses or over inclines and ravines. Sometimes things just go sliding into rock just due to the dirt and angles in uneven incline. After a day or two out here, most ATVers will find they have developed some additional maneuvering skills on their ATVs.

An ATV Hooray for Hollister Hills
An ATV Hooray for Hollister Hills Hollister Hills State Recreation Area exists for ATV people. It is all about the ride! There are spots for motorcyclists, ATVers, OHVers. You can enjoy the land rise from about 600 feet to nearly 2,500 feet. ATVs can be driven from dawn to dusk, though you can camp in the park. If there are any ATV problems or breakdowns the party on the ATV is responsible to remove it before nightfall. The park has to main areas: the Upper and Lower Ranch. The Lower Ranch is a designated ATV area. It is a 2,400-acre set aside for motorcycle and ATV use exclusively. With 64 miles of trails, hills to climb, practice motocross track, mini-bike and mini-track trails, there is just all an ATV family needs for a good time. There are washout stations at the campsites and day use areas. Even though you can camp, you can only drive sunup to sunset. The Upper Ranch can be reserved for special events by riding clubs or groups. This may restrict access to the area, but there should be notices at the main park office. Trails, tracks, buildings, equipment and more are all maintained by the State Vehicular Recreation Division, restrooms, water, first aid, search and rescue, more. There is much behind the scene work done to make an unforgettable experience for the ATV family. The State wants to promote responsible ATVing, and what better way than to make the ATV experience just about perfect. This is a very nice way to introduce anyone into ATVing.

Crest the High Sierras on an ATV
Crest the High Sierras on an ATV The Sierra Nevada Mountains are located mostly in California and a bit in Western Nevada; and an ATV enthusiast could schedule his driving time for years just within the territorial scope of this range. There are so many ATV possibilities, and only so much driving time. The range runs about 400 miles on a SSE to NNW lean, in east central California. There are six major mountains in this group, Mt Whitney being the tallest in the lower 48. The others are: Mt Tyndall, Mt Langley, Middle Palisade, Mt Russell, and North Palisade. More interesting to most ATVer, are the three national parks in the Sierra Range. These are Sequoia National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, and Yosemite National Park. Lake Tahoe is in the Sierras, and what was the Mother Lode runs the western slope, the Comstock Lode runs the eastern slope. The history and majesty of this area is apparent while driving or riding ATVs anywhere in this mountain range. It makes you feel like a part of something grander than you can ever imagine. An ATV driver will enjoy the wealth of things to do everywhere they turn here. There is something for every level of experience with ATV use to be found in the High Sierras. A beginner can have a wonderful time in the right areas here, and an old hand at ATV can find many suitable challenge runs. There are places to stay, eat, camp, fish, boat, hike and so much more. The High Sierras are a natural ATV high!

Glamis Sand Dunes, the Ultimate ATV Drive
Glamis Sand Dunes, the Ultimate ATV Drive For ATV drivers who are experienced, Glamis Sand Dunes are one of the top experiences to be had. The town of Brawley is just 20 minutes outside the dune area and provides open camping, and an off-road area. They also have places where most amenities necessary for provisioning an outing may be found. Nearer the Dunes is Gecko Road where there are also developed campgrounds, though considered primitive sites, usually meaning no running water for bathroom facilities. There are ATV events scheduled at Glamis Dunes nearly every weekend from March to December. The Cahuilla Ranger Station is open on weekends and holidays, to be available if needed during these times. The Glamis Dunes have been used in commercials and movies, notably "Star Gate", and "Wayne's World II." This is a very sparsely populated area, but on weekends the ranks swell up to the 30,000s with all the ATV people coming to events. The sand dunes are deceptive in pictures. TV and the movies do not give a proper proportion of the size of the area or the dunes themselves. There are sand highways in this part of California. Some dunes are 200 feet high or more. Driving an ATV up and over a sand dune is not the same as scaling a rock ledge or wilderness trail. One key attribute of a proficient ATV driver is control over a sand environment. Glamis Sand Dunes is a great place to learn new ATV skills.

Grand Canyon Country by ATV
Grand Canyon Country by ATV
There is so much for an ATV enthusiast to do in Grand Canyon Country there must be multiple planned outings to be made. Grand Canyon Country takes in the area of the canyon itself, and Sedona, Flagstaff, Prescott, and Scottsdale/ Phoenix. Each community on the desert has its own charm and specialties. If you live in the area there is something for you every weekend to do and see on your ATV.
The Grand Canyon National Park is inclusive of a world wonder and people from all over the globe come to just lean over and see the "hole." There is an almost endless source of things to do here. Foremost are the ATV tours, for those people who want to feel the wheels under them. Once a destination in reached there is camping, fishing, rafting, hunting, history, sightseeing, to name a few things to do.
Sedona is a national treasure for its desert beauty. ATV tours go out into the desert from here on 40-mile escapes to places such as Skeleton Bone Mountain. There is Verde River and Coconino National Forest to explore. These are rugged trips and one real heck of a ride for the diehard enthusiast, a great way to become familiar with desert ATV driving. The coming evening is evident on the sunsets on the rocks and surrounding mountains.
Flagstaff is central to many places of interest to anyone who drives an ATV. Places like Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, and Wupatki National Monument are must see stops. Every part of the desert is unique, so be prepared for an ATV love affair with nature.

Fort Apache Indian Reservation with an ATV
Fort Apache Indian Reservation with an ATV
ATV drivers who are also history buffs will enjoy an ATV trip through Fort Apache Indian Reservation. This is on the National Register of Historic Places. This is the land of Geronimo and Cochise. An ATV plan in the southwest that does not include a trip through this area is missing the point.
The intrepid ATV driver will find camping, hiking, river rafting, fishing, and hunting at their disposal. There is the Apache Culture Museum to explore, which has displays of native art and handicraft, as well as a gift shop were such items may be purchased. Fort Apache, located in the White Mountains offers something for every member of an ATV family. So, jump on your ATV and make a point to say "dago te", which is hello and welcome in Apache to the experience of an ATV trip through Fort Apache.
It should be noted, that an ATV driver can make plans to drive the rim, but ATV trips here at Fort Apache are planned through an internal ATV group, it is not permissible to drive an ATV through the Indian Reservation on one's own. Still, there is a wonderful occurrence here not to be missed. You can set up a day trip by ATV to some of the most remote areas in the eservation, giving yourself the treat of a hard trek with the knowledge that you will come back to a comfortable evening with your family. You can still have a personal experience on an ATV trip in a special part of the world.

Fordyce on an ATV Mind
Fordyce on an ATV Mind Fordyce Lake is a central location to many gentler, easier places to run ATVs. It is more a family with children type of area. It has plenty of places to run ATVs and places for children to be active. There are lots and lots of hiking available for the adventurous such as the Overland Emigrant Trail, Glacier Lakes Trail, and Beyer's Lake Trail. Several other lakes around Fordyce may be reached easily from a home base. There is Glacier Lake, Jerry Lake, and Lily Pond. The area is a lake area and has so many lakes, ponds, river's and stream crossings that it is a natural for the water loving ATVer. You can travel further up the mountains as far as you want. The views are all glorious and the terrain is not as rough so everyone of every age in the group will find it pleasant. There is the usual fishing and camping available to do, as well as the ATV activities. This is a great place to get acquainted with the ATV sport. New drivers, riders or owners can test themselves and their gear in this area with abandon. This is a place where you learn the fun in the ATV experience, and share the fun with others. There are always rules in State and National forests, but they are not invasive to having a good time. ATV use is a sport whose time is here, and the now is at Fordyce Lake. Spend a weekend in the woods.

Eureka, the ATVers Found It
Eureka, the ATVers Found It This part of Northern California is considered by many people, including those who drive ATVs, as one of the most beautiful places in the west. It has been named, "America's Most Scenic Rural County," and "One of the World's Top Ten Great Places." Here an ATVer can discover the majesty of the redwoods. There are many rugged spots in which to test one's ATV skills. This area has 40 recreation spots, forests, parks, and other use spaces where an ATV driver can while away the time in skilled pursuits. A wonderful way to explore the ins and outs of this place is by ATV. There is camping, hiking, swimming, fishing, and much more. There are trails throughout the national areas. If there are people in your group who like the amenities in the evening and do not wish to camp, there are lodges, hotels, restaurants, sightseeing, museums galore. Eureka has an historic Victorian past and it is reflected in the "Old Town" there. Local favorite high lights are the Farmer's Market in season, Loleta Cheese Factory tours, Jacoby's Storehouse, a state landmark - the Railroad Museum, and Redwood Coast Wineries. Redwood Coast Heritage Trails are new and guided. As for the diehard ATV driver, any trail is a great trail in this part of California. They all meander in and out of some of the most spectacular viewing spots in the mountains. Any ATV enthusiast needs to put this on a must do list of places to ride in California.

Dusy-Ershim, for Advanced ATV Use
Dusy-Ershim, for Advanced ATV Use Located in the Kings River District of the Sierra National Forest, Dusy-Ershim is one tough drive for seasoned ATV drivers. There are seven campsites within the district and you can plan an ATV adventure around any of them. It is recommended for only short wheel base vehicles. The point at Chicken Rock gives you an idea of the terrain; it is a 50 degree incline - hence the name "chicken rock." The area is covered over in this type of landscape. There are several routes into the place, one for regular vehicles and one for OHV types. The ATV routes are plentiful and dangerous. The ground is pockmarked with mud holes deceptive of their depth. You want to make sure you have enough water for yourself, and any parts you might need to replace quickly on your ATV. There is a ridge running at 10,000 feet, so if your ATV destination is this altitude, try to make in the early or later part of the day. It is an arduous uphill climb. You might have to "adjust" the landscape with a few well-placed rocks to be successful here. The top of the ridge is the separation of Kings River and Pineridge Districts. Both areas have camp facilities for anyone wanting to spend some time here. Also, there is hiking available and fishing in this area, though the ATV experience is one of the finest in the west. Dusy-Ershim is a must do for the ATVer who loves a challenge.

Bristlecone Pine Forest, ATV and See the Trees
Bristlecone Pine Forest, ATV and See the Trees Perhaps one of nature's grandest sights for the ATV enthusiast is the Bristlecone Pine Forest. East of the Sierra Nevada, in the White Mountains at an elevation of between 10,000 and 11,000 feet in the Inyo National Forest are some of the oldest trees on the planet. The 4,000-year-old trees in this area are even older then the better known and much revered Sequoias. There are two self-guided trails at Schulman Grove, named for Dr. Schulman who has spent many years in extensive study of the trees. This first is a walking trail. Here you can see the first dated tree, and the Methuselah tree, 4,723 years old. You will also find a visitor center, picnic area and toilets; there are designated camping areas, BUT no water. Make sure to bring enough to keep you going on ATV jaunts. There is a 13-mile trip up a dirt road to the next site, Patriarch Grove. An unqualified must see for photographers in the group. This area has a self-guided trail to the Patriarch Tree, the oldest Bristlecone in the world. Because the area is unique and classified as a Botanical Area, it is set aside for both research and the public's enjoyment of the natural beauty of the trees. There are very strict, but fair rules for the use of the area. Hikers and ATV drivers alike must stay on designated trails; the trees have shallow, fragile roots. Camping regulations are strictly enforced. Even so, this is still one of the greatest sights an ATV driver can find in nature.

Barrett Lake ATV Getaway
Barrett Lake ATV Getaway An ATV escape into the Sonora Desert may be just the ticket for a desert adventure. Barrett Lake is located northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. What makes it a nice destination is its distance form the city. It is far enough away to not attract the casual tourist, making it the perfect ATV area. The area is urban until you reach the bounds of Tonto National Forest. This is a true desert with saguaro cacti, boulders, plenty of dirt, and heat in the summer months. Driving an ATV through rough terrain you will reach an upland where you veer northward and run downhill to a horseshoe shaped lake. Barrett Lake is a reservoir lake with lots to see and do on both sides. ATV trips here could be great fun. There is a self pay station, but what you have is picnic places, boat launching areas, beaches, fire rings and showers - and after a dusty ATV run a shower sounds mighty good! There is also an area named Barrett Flats where there are a few campsites. Walking the area to see the lay of the land is a good idea, and this way an ATV enthusiast can become more aware of the wildlife around the lake. There are rattlesnakes, but this is the desert and should be expected here, so be aware of them. Make sure to take water and anything else you might like to spend the day in a very pristine natural area. This is an ATV desert dream.

ATV and 20 Million People
ATV and 20 Million People If you live in the city of Los Angeles, and long for the open ATV trail, you need look no further than outside the city limits. Angeles National Forest is an hour's drive near. This is a huge natural area with something for everyone, no matter how "citified" they are. There are over 100 picnic and campsites ranging from streamside interludes to rustic high mountain getaways. Here you will find designated cross-forest ATV trails that range in difficulty from beginner to experienced for usage. This is a wonderful place where one can escape into nature, and the ATV world is wide open to all. The forest is so big that an ATV driver will feel like they are in the wilderness. The area goes from the ocean to the mountains in scope. There is very rugged terrain in certain areas and it is advisable to understand your ATV well before attempting higher elevated trails. If you decide to take an ATV riding break you will find more than 500 miles of hiking trails at your disposal. This allows an ATV driver to feel more in tune with the natural surroundings. You can see the lay of the land and how your ATV works within its parameters. You also have the choice of fishing, camping and other recreational things available within the forest. Your ATV can become the perfect vehicle for a mini vacation from the city, or from anywhere at any time - just take some time to explore the great Angeles National Forest.

Big Sur and Big ATV Fun
Big Sur and Big ATV Fun An ATV owner looking for Big Sur has a 90-mile stretch from San Simeon to Carmel to consider. This area is an international tourist destination. The area takes in the coastline and runs due east into the Santa Lucia Range. The land is an interesting mix of sandy shoreline to sheer cliffs heading toward rain forest, and high chaparral. Here in the south reach the ATV enthusiast will find redwood stands. There are 11 State parks through this stretch and allows the ATV owner a nice variety of choice of things to do. Plans for the whole summer, or an ATV vacation could easily center around Big Sur. The area is still sparsely populated and gives you the feeling of being all alone in the wilderness in some locales. There are three distinct Native American groups here, and a definite Spanish influence. Now, there are rules in the populated areas eliminating billboards and ads that spoil the beauty of the views, making it all the more desirable a place to take an ATV. Since the area is mostly fueled by tourism there is more than enough for the whole family to do; museums, tours, art galleries, restaurants, camping, hiking, fishing to name a few things. The first attraction is the wild natural beauty of the whole area. Los Padres National Forest encloses the higher mountains of the Big Sur. Due to the nature of the locals through the area, the developers have been kept at bay and an ATV lover can enjoy a feeling of going into the last frontier of the Wild West when they ride Big Sur.

ATVers Fall for Bassi Falls
ATVers Fall for Bassi Falls A most wonderful adventure awaits the ATV user at Bassi Falls. Bassi Falls is located near Pollock Pines in Eldorado National Forest. It may be accessed from Placerville, California. ATV within the Eldorado and work your way over to the falls, it is worth the trip. The forest is large and you reach the falls by trail. Make sure your gear includes comfortable hiking boots as well as being proper for your ATV driving. The very best time of year to experience Bassi Falls is spring. The winter runoff inflates the water volume to give a stunning effect of exploding over the crest of boulders in a 120-foot drop. Once you've taken in this view, travel onward to the top and watch it spill from above. This is a superb way to spend some ATV quality time. The area of the forest has more to offer and you can spend a day on your ATV and leave, or a weekend and camp. You could ATV in the summer, but be warned, by then the water has runoff and the falls tend to trickle over the drop. The creek bed doesn't dry up, but it becomes sluggish. If you are an ATV enthusiast who also is into photography make sure your ATV ride will arrive at the falls either early in the morning, or late in the afternoon. The sun on the water during the day turns an awesome picture moment into the mediocre. The other falls in the area you might find by ATV are: Bridal Veil, Buttermilk, Dogtown Creek, Silver, Traverse, and University.

ATV and Bridgeport, a Crossroads
ATV and Bridgeport, a Crossroads The county seat of Mono, California, Bridgeport is at the crossroads of US 395 and California 182, and a crossroad for the ATV owner. What to do on a wonderful afternoon. One can travel east of town to the Travertine Hot Springs, the best-maintained hot spring in the state. One can travel north to the ghost town of Bodie, at Bodie Ghost Town State Park. The ATV driver has the eastern slopes of the High Sierra at their disposal. There is Mono Lake, Tioga Pass, Yosemite National Park, June Lake, and Mammoth Lakes where one can take on some ATV fun. Further on you can find Carson City, Virginia City, and Reno. Bridgeport is central to this whole area. The secret of ATVing this location is that it has some of the best fishing areas of the Eastern Sierras. Anyone who ATVs to the backcountry to find great fishing will find it here, along with great trail riding. For the laid back ATV driver, of the "beat generation" variety, it is noteworthy to tell that the town of Bridgeport had a small part in Jack Kerouac's novel, "The Dharma Bums." Somehow, an ATV ride around the area might invoke the spirit of the moment. There is a local motel, campground and restaurant located near here. Also, for hikers in your group, Matterhorn Peak is nearby. The region is a picturesque. All in all, there are many fine things for ATVers to do and see in this area of California.

Running Martinez Canyon an ATV Dream
Running Martinez Canyon an ATV Dream
Martinez Canyon is an ATV driver's dream come true. Located in Pinal County, Arizona, Martinez Canyon is one of 17 or more ghost towns within the county. However, the immediate area is so rugged it takes someone with much ATV handling skill and daring to negotiate the countryside. The terrain is rocky with loose boulders and wash deposits, and it only grows more challenging as one travels deeper into the desert. This is not for the faint of heart.
Martinez Canyon is south of US 60 and more than 20 miles from the main highway. The trip from the highway to Martinez becomes rougher by the yard. It would be a wise choice to make the run with several other seasoned ATV people, and carrying some type of GPS unit is advisable. This is a veritable moonscape of an ATV run. 4WD vehicles have fallen over steep embankments as a matter of course in this area of Arizona.
There are other interesting things to do and see in this county, such as, fishing the Picacho Peak Reservoir, or hiking part of the Superstition Mountains, or maybe, sky diving, or taking a sunset steamboat cruise. It is not advisable to take the whole family on a run if they are not seasoned ATVers.
All that said, the ride is an incomparable ATV experience that most ATV drivers only wish they could find in their back yards. Any ATV driver who makes this run will earn the bragging rights to be talking about it around the campfire for the rest of their lives.

La Paz County Park and ATVs
La Paz County Park and ATVs
ATV drivers can find La Paz County on a bend of the Colorado River. La Paz includes several Indian communities, and Parker, Arizona was once their trade center. Now, on the periphery of Lake Havasu, Parker is the jumping off point to the Arizona lake country. This is great news for ATV drivers, since they can start their lake country tour by spending some time at La Paz County Park.
Lake Havasu was formed with the creation of Parker Dam. It is the deepest dam in the world, since 65% of its height is actually below the riverbed. La Paz County Park is open year around, and there are many recreational activities including camping. There is a 17 mile strip of the Colorado known as the Parker Strip. There are water activities abutting desert activities here which include miles and miles of off road trails for the best of ATV drivers. ATV enthusiasts will enjoy finding old mines and ghost towns dotting the area. Be sure to bring your cameras on these excursions, the ghost towns are deteriorating rapidly and in 10 to 20-years time, many will have faded away.
La Paz County has gone to great efforts to create a very family friendly recreation experience. There are several other parks in the county system; any one of which would be a wonderful way to spend a day for ATVers. Family oriented ATV groups will find this is the area for them as the County Sheriffs, Town of Parker, and local Indian tribes work together to make the area a safe haven for ATV activities all members of the family can enjoy.

Lake Mohave for ATV Enthusiasts
Lake Mohave for ATV Enthusiasts
Those ATV enthusiasts who also enjoy fishing will love Lake Mohave. After a hot dusty ATV run in the Arizona desert, drop into Lake Mohave to cool off. Lake Mohave was created by the building of Davis dam. Davis dam is part of the Hoover Dam flood prevention system. Lake Mohave is part of the bigger system of Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Though only 6 miles wide in some places, Lake Mohave is nearly 67 miles long; offering plenty of area for water related recreation on its banks.
ATV runners can access Lake Mohave from Arizona, at Katherine Landing, or from Nevada at Cottonwood Cove. Both sites are family friendly. They both have a myriad array of facilities which include, camping for tents or trailers, rentals, lodging, restaurants, boating docks and launches, and much more. One of its unique offers is houseboat rentals.
For the ATV driver who just must fish, Lake Mohave is stocked with the quintessential American fish group: rainbow trout, bass and largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill, and crappie. Fishing in the desert after a day on an ATV trail is some people's idea of perfect, if that description fits you, just make sure you packed your fishing license along for the ATV ride. Just an ATV run up from the Dam on the Nevada side you can find Laughlin, Nevada for any gaming urges you may find you have. This is an all around nice place to take some time off and have an ATV away to the desert without the fear of running out of water!

Riding the Highway of the Devil on an ATV
Riding the Highway of the Devil on an ATV
For the hearty ATV enthusiast the Devil's Highway is just the ticket for an exciting ride. The name is El Camino del Diablo; the actual translation for the route is "Highway of the Devil." This route is well named given the stone cross markers that point the last spot of those who expired on the way. Near the end of the trail are a cluster of nearly 65 markers attesting to the grueling finish of this ATV run.
Experienced ATV drivers might like the challenge of a 3 to 10 day trek. It is better to go in the winter months when the daytime temperatures are bearable; the summer temperatures can go to 120 degrees. Each ATV driver needs a minimum of two gallons of water a day during the summer, to get through the trip. This ATV run follows a notable route from Spanish settlements in California to the north limit of Mexico.
This area of the country is a huge stretch of water holes, animal and Indian trails, ancient hunt areas, shrines, and campsites; perfect for exploring on ATV. The area is rich in history from the Indians to the Spanish and then American settlers and westward movement. The interest to the ATV enthusiast is in the road not taken, or rather, the road less taken.
Many routes are faint on the landscape, having been mere toeholds that ran from water to camp to water. An ATV diarist could have an account of a magnificent and memorable time by taking the road less traveled on this trip. Make sure your ATV is outfitted with all the necessary gear for quick repair; you do not want to be stranded in this desert. Make sure you carry plenty of water on board your ATV and be ready for an unforgettable time.

ATV by the Hualapai Indian Reservation
ATV by the Hualapai Indian Reservation
If an Indian way of life is what interests you, then an ATV jaunt toward the Hualapai Indian Reservation is what you need. Hualapai Reservation is west of Lake Meade National Recreation Area; the territory encompasses a million acres and 108 miles of the Colorado River. It spreads across parts of Coconino, Yavapai, and Mohave counties.
Hwal'bay is the name meaning "People of the Tall Pine." They call the middle length of the Colorado River, Hakataya - the backbone of the river. ATV drivers can attest to the significance of this middle passage, as it is very challenging. Drive by ATV up to the reservation, once at the tribal capital, Peach Springs, you will be able to park your ATV and indulge a myriad of outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, or camping.
These Indians have the only Indian owned river rafting business in the area, aptly called the Hualapai River Runners. If you hunt, apply for permit for elk, Bighorn Sheep, or antelope. This is an ATV substitute to the tourist choked Grand Canyon National Park. There is hiking, picnicking, fishing, camping, and of course, lots of great ATVing.
Hualapai Mountain Park was shaped by the Civil Conservation Corps in the 1930's. This area is wonderful for ATV aficionados. There are original structures there for picnics and camping. There are plenty of trails and roads for riding or hiking. The Hualapai trace themselves back to the "pai", the people. The tribe is very welcoming to everyone and with everyone pitching in the keep the land as they found it, this part of Arizona will remain special for ATV use.
