Somerville Lake - A Full Day Of ATV Riding Fun

If you're looking for a challenging ride that isn't too technically difficult but more of a bumpy ride, you'll love the ATVing at Somerville Lake. The area with the ATV trails is very undeveloped, somewhat eroded and if it has been raining, you will find a lot of standing water in the lower lying areas.

The best thing about Somerville Lake is ATVers are allowed to ride anywhere within the designated ATV riding area and the area is open all year around and no permit is required to ride your ATV. This undeveloped terrain makes for a fun ride, be sure to wear all your safety gear as with all rough and rugged terrain, your ATV or someone else's can roost up a rock or other debris and if the debris hits a chest, leg or hand - it can really sting. Simply wearing proper riding gear for your ATV will eliminate this problem.

At present, only 3 and 4 wheel ATVs are allowed on these trails. You will also be sharing the ATV trails with motorcycles. If your ATV won't fit through the pipe rail fence at the entrance of the ATV trail, you simply can not ride it there. Since you're sharing these trails with other riders and the trails are not clearly marked, do exercise caution. This ATV area is only open from dawn until dusk and there is no currently no camping allowed.

No matter what your ATV riding skill level, you will find a lot of challenges at Somerville. If youare a newer ATVer, there are easy to navigate paths by the trailhead. If you're a more seasoned ATV rider, you will thoroughly enjoy the ATV trails as they go further down as the terrain gets a little more eroded and will have a lot of inclines and dips for you to test your skills upon.

Maps are available, and even though this is not a large ATV riding area, since the terrain is so raw, it would be a good idea to get a map to insure you don't get lost or on a trail that is too difficult for your riding experience level. If you like challenges in your ATV riding, check out Somerville Lake.

The Benefits Of Joining An ATV Club In Utah

If you live in Southern Utah you live in a great state to own an ATV. There are a number of good groups you can join if you don't have anyone to ride your ATV with or you'd like to join a larger group to find more places to ride. One such group in Southern Utah is the Southeastern Utah OHV Club (SUOC). SUOC is a non-profit organization located in Castledale, Utah and this group works hard to not only to keep the land rights for ATV/OHV riders but motorcycle enthusiasts as well.

There's a lot of misinformation and a few irresponsible people have threatened to take away a lot of riding areas that responsible ATVers have enjoyed for years. SUOC works hard to maintain a good public awareness about land issues so many of the ATV trails enjoyed by off-road enthusiasts will be around for future generations. This goes not only for Southern Utah but the entire State as well.

SUOC is involved in trail improvements and maintenance, ATV/OHV safety and etiquette awareness, and political action regarding land decisions for all recreational vehicle riders. This group did extensive work rebuilding and managing some trails in the mountains around Southern Utah to show the good that can be done when responsible groups of ATV/OHV people get together.

This group shows the positive side of ATV/OHV riders and the good that can be done when like minded people band together to make a difference. If you're looking to join an active ATV riding group, join up with a group that will make a difference, like SUOC.

Enjoyment of ATV Riding

Many people get ATVs to help them around their farms and homes with hauling and getting around large properties. Other people get ATVs to take them fishing or hunting. In certain States, North Dakota for example, an ATV is the ONLY way you may collect your game (including deer) if you're bow hunting.

And then there is the large group of people who ride ATVs because it is fun. It's a great way to make family bonds stronger and enjoy a weekend of riding with your family. Trail riding with your ATV is one of the easiest and most fun activities you can do with your vehicle.

Even the newest of ATVers can keep up on a trail ride and most areas that offer up public riding lands, have different levels of ATV trail systems so you can plan your trail riding to meet the skills of all riders in your group.

It's also a great way to teach your kids to read maps and if you are into GPS - how to read latitude and longitude. If you have a newer ATVer along for the ride, and easy way to insure that no one gets lost or left behind when you're riding single file on ATV trails, is to not go forward until the person behind you catches up. That way everyone gets to enjoy a leisurely day of ATVing and no one has to feel frustrated or rushed and won't have the possibility of getting lost. Some trails are so densely foliaged they block out the sun and it can be quite dark in some areas of some forests even at straight up noon. Therefore, it can be easy to get turned around with your directions.

Be sure to obey all signs, rules and regs when you're riding and adhere to the standards put forth by Treadlightly. If you bring it into the trail with you, bring it out.

Trail riding can be so much fun for you and your family. Your kids will learn a lot of good lessons and skills by riding their ATVs and making decisions as to maneuvers and turns. Plus, if you have been feeling like you and your favorite person don't see enough of each other, trail riding can be a very romantic getaway for two as well.

Overnight ATV Trip - Items To Bring

If you've never overnighted on an ATV outing before, you're in for a real treat. It only takes a little planning and organization to insure you have a great time with your friends.

Before you go for a long weekend on your ATV, give your machine the once over and make sure it's in good shape for the ride. A little preventative maintenance will save you a large repair bill on your ATV when you check it often for little things like screws that need to be tightened, spark plugs, brakes in good order, chain lubed and other routine items.

Make sure you have a little tool box and a first aid kit with the basics on your ATV when you're riding. Having a few tools and an extra spark plug or two can save your entire trip.

Next, think about comfort when sleeping, bring a tent and a sleeping bag for yourself and a tarp will usually suffice nicely for your ATV and gear. Also, consider food and water. Water is a must when you're riding. Dehydration can make you ill and lead to fatigue which is one of the biggest causes of preventable accidents. A small cooler will protect your food from curious critters and don't forget your personal items such as your tooth brush and paste, wash rag, some towels, etc. You will need some cleaning items for keeping your camping area neat and tidy. Some of these items are a broom, some rags, dish pan, etc.

Last but certainly not least, bring a bag to put your trash and other refuse in. Remember, if you bring it in the ATV trails with you, bring it out and it will keep the trails beautiful for future generations to enjoy!

Using Your ATV To Haul Deer

If you're an avid ATVer and hunter, you're well aware how much a deer can weigh. When it comes time to claim your game you want to do it the safest way possible that also lets your trophy sized deer stay looking good so you can arrive with a pristine rack on your game.

ATVs have become so important in hunting, many states will only allow you to claim large game when you are hunting on an ATV. Some people simply tie a rope and drag their game in, but be aware your prize will probably arrive bald. If you were hunting simply to have deer to process, this aspect of hauling your game probably won't bother you one bit.

If you want a better way to transport your deer on an ATV, simply field dress the game and then load onto a rack on your ATV. Your ATV is a workhorse and built tough and made to last, however do not load your ATV beyond its capacity. It will take two you usually to get your game onto your ATV, make sure someone will be available to help you unload it when you get to your campsite or trailhead.

Also, the handling of your ATV will be different when you are carrying a load. Climb and descend hills and inclines with extreme caution and never go it alone. Make sure another rider is with you especially when you're carrying game.

Deer hunting can be a challenging sport and your ATV can save you a lot of legwork when going to the hunting site as well as when it is time to bring your game back to camp. Before trying to haul game, inspect your ATV before going hunting to insure your ATV is equipped to handle hauling game.

Riding Your ATV At The Four Seasons Resort In Western PA

If you're looking for a good getaway to go ride your ATV with your family and friends, Western PA has a fun place called The Four Seasons Resort that offers up a great day of riding for you and your friends.

They do have some rules and regs to make sure everyone has an enjoyable time. They require that you wear your safety equipment at all times when riding your ATV on the premises.

There are maps available of the latest trail openings for ATV riding and periodically, certain ATV trails are closed off to allow the vegetation to reclaim itself. This insures there are always fresh trails and the ground is never eroded to the point it can not recover.

If you have a young person under the age of 14 in your ATV group, they must be accompanied with an adult to ride on the trails. There is also a 10 MPH speed limit on all ATV trails.

Before riding the Four Seasons will ask that you have a noise muffler in place as the decibel limit for the area is 94 maximum. A baby's average cry is about 100 decibels to give you an idea of how loud that is. You will also have to show proof of insurance and you must wear your DOT approved helmet when riding your ATV at all times. You will be asked to purchase a $25 yearly permit or $10 permit per bike per continuous stay, good up to two weeks and all riders must sign a waiver before riding. Additionally, you must be a guest of the resort.

If you follow these rules that are mostly just plain old common sense, you're going to have a great time riding your ATV at the Four Seasons Resort!

Riding Your ATV On A Bowhunting Adventure In North Dakota

ATV enthusiasts are always looking for that next great ride on their ATVs. If you're looking to do something challenging on your next ATV excursion. Take a trip to North Dakota to the charming little town of Watford City and you will find ATV heaven in a humble little place named Deep Creek.

They have over 8,000-acres of unspoiled ATV trails for you to ride on and explore the scenic badlands. If you are looking to do a little bowhunting, you're in for a good challenge.

The North Dakota Deer Bowhunting season starts the first week of September and runs until December 31. You may use an ATV to retrieve your game only. Each September there are 750 non-resident deer tags given out so you may bowhunt legally. There are also Elk tags, but those are only available to residents of North Dakota.

For several years, very limited hunting has been offered in this area to insure trophy size deer for a skilled bowhunter. If you're looking to make it a weekend of bowhunting, riding your ATV and hanging out in one of the cozy cabins with your friends, you've planned the perfect getaway!

The ATV trails are so numerous, you can ride to and from your cabin and many trails offer loop-backs to different trail systems. A map is a great thing to have for these weaving, lush ATV trails so you don't get lost.

Because there is so much vast area to cover on your ATV, even during the busy season, you will feel as though you have the wilderness pretty much to yourself. If you're looking for a serene place to ride your ATV and you'd like to get in a little bowhunting, check out Watford City and make a stop at Deep Creek.

Mexico ATV Riding

Rio Puerco (Pig River) is one of the best places to ride your ATV if you like a good variety of terrain to ride your ATV on. The trails range from sandy soil conditions to hard pack where you can really let your ATV tires dig in. You will have a great view of Mount Taylor, don't be fooled into thinking you can ride to the mountain, it is nearly 70-miles away. Night riding is probably not a good idea as there are drop offs and cliffs. The ATV trails are open all year round and there are no restrictions. No services, no patrols, just open country for you to enjoy on your ATV.

Nine Mile Hill is near Albuquerque and offers up a great day of riding loose sand dunes. There are no rules and regulations, just common sense and safety rules you know you should be doing anyway. This area doesn't get a lot of traffic, but the traffic is does get includes ATVs, motorcycles and dune buggies.

Another fun venue to ride your ATV at is called simply The Dunes. It is located in Farmington and the terrain you can ride your ATV on ranges from dunes to sun hardened sandstone. There is a race held here once a year that takes place on a 33-mile long loop.

Last but not least, check out the ATVing at Mescalero Dunes which is located in Alien City USA - Roswell. There is one square mile that is fenced off strictly for ATV and OHV use. There are good trails to ride your ATV on as well as dunes if you enjoy that kind of sand kicking action on your ATV.

Next time you're in New Mexico, check out some of these unspoiled and not often visited ATV trails and enjoy exploring!

Make Your Next ATV Trip An Overnighter

If you're going ATVing with your friends in a rather large area of ATV trails, you might want to consider the fun of camping out overnight so you and your ATVing friends can get up early the next day and enjoy the fun.

Many ATV trails now allow camping but not directly on the trails, normally there are designated campsites. Knowing you don't have to stop and make your back to the trailhead to pack up your ATV for the evening will let you ride longer with your friends and pull over when you've had your fun for the day and enjoy a great evening together camping.

The benefits of camping mean you not only get to ride the ATV trails longer, but you also will be riding them safer. If you aren't tired, you aren't as likely to make a mistake when you're riding your ATV and you are much less likely to become fatigued.

Most ATV trails allow you to have small campfires in the designated camping area. Enjoy a campfire meal with your friend and hash out your favorite ATV stories. It is important to follow the "Leave No Trace" standards and basically, if you bring it in, bring it out with you. There should be no trace of your campsite when you and your ATV buddies leave. This applies to campfires too, make sure after the fire is absolutely doused, to scatter the ashes and make sure there is no trace of your having been there.

If you've been thinking of doing something a little different with your buddies when you ride your ATVs, consider taking an extended weekend with your friends and make it an overnight stay so you can hop on your ATVs the next day and continue the fun!

Teaching Children ATV Riding Respect

If you have a child who is an avid ATV rider, you no doubt want to teach your child respect for the land as well as other ATV riders. This is important not only for the environment, but also As a valuable life lesson for your child. Teaching a child that code of ethics for ATV riding allows everyone to benefit from being a safe and responsible rider.

One of the first lessons you certainly want your child to learn regarding ATV riding, is never, ever to ride recklessly. Not only is it unsafe to ride recklessly, it gives those who are responsible ATV riders a bad name. When a child is taught from the beginning to respect the land that he or she is riding on, your child will carry this respect over into other aspects of his or her life.

Another very important lesson for children to learn, is to obey all trail markers and closure signs. Trails may be closed for several reasons, and it should never be taken upon any one to decide that a closed trail is safe. Although it may not be obvious from first glance why a trail is closed, the trail has been closed for a very good reason. This may include something as simple as refuge to plants or wildlife, to something as dangerous as a possible fire hazard to ATV riders.

It is also important for children to learn to throw away garbage in specified receptacles. It is also a great idea to pick up any litter that you see, if you have the means to take it with you on your ATV, and carry it to a proper trash bin.

When you park your ATV, please make sure not to block other vehicles, as well as other trails. It can be frustrating to others who want to use the trail, or their own ATV when they cannot because they are blocked in.

Always make sure to learn the area that you will be riding your ATV in before you get there. If at all possible, contact the landowner or a person who manages the land and make sure that you not only have permission to ride there, but that you are a good enough distance away from any restrictions.

Finally, keep your ATV as quiet as possible. It is not necessary to have a loud engine, and if your engine is too loud, it may disturb the wildlife around, as well as other people who are enjoying nature.

By following these simple rules, your child will make an excellent example of what ATV riding is all about.

Women Who Love To ATV

It seems like men get all the fun. Men are allowed to get dirty, men are allowed to be loud and obnoxious. It's time that women stepped up and started having some good "clean" dirty fun, too. And in what better way than in the form of an ATV?

Granted, ATV riding is not for every woman. But to be fair, ATV riding is not for every man, either. If you are a woman who loves adventure and isn't afraid to use her muscles, ATV riding may be the perfect hobby for you. ATV riding has a lot of factors to consider, not the least of which is the danger involved. Occasionally, you may end up breathing in clouds of dust, or end up riding your ATV in some sticky wet mud. If this thought does not gross you out, or in fact, maybe even makes you grin, perhaps you should look into getting an ATV of your own.

If ATVing is a weekend love of yours and you're single there have been many successful relationships formed through ATV clubs. You're already among people who share your interests, If you're already hitched, make ATVing a couples sport and you will find ATVing through lush trails and enjoying the quiet beauty of the outdoors can be downright romantic.

ATV riding is a terrific competitive sport. Women of all shapes and sizes can compete in ATV riding. These women are mothers, and even grandmothers! Even if you choose not to compete in the sport, ATV riding is a wonderful way to bond with nature. With the wind in your face and the world outside surrounding you, an ATV can make you feel as if you are flying. And, when precautions are taken, it can be wonderful quality time with your ATV riding age appropriate children.

There is no reason women could not be ATV riding just as much as men are. So go ahead, hop on your husband's old ATV and tell him he can have it back when you go buy your own, new ATV!

Two ATV Riding Staple Videos

See ATVing in action. There are a number of great videos out there about ATVing, and if you have a collection going, make sure these two videos are part of it. If you are really into watching videos involving ATV riding, you want to get all of the action you can for your dollar. After all, you could be spending that money on gas for your own ATV, right? Here are two ATV riding videos, that are sure to get your gears turning.

"Charge"

This ATV riding video is a terrific watch. You actually get to feel as if you have visited the many different terrains of the world. In the ATV riding video "Charge", you'll visit the Perilous trails of Baja. For those who wish to experience something a bit more "Texan", you can ride your virtual ATV through the Mud Nationals in Texas. Perhaps you're more of a "city slicker"... "Charge" Appeals to you, too, as you quad through the big apple. The Akraix crew rolls through freestyle, and will keep your ATV-loving engine revved.

"The QuadFather"

presented by X-Factor video, the Akraix riders are at it once again, in an ATV riding video that is as epic as the title in which it was spoofed from. For anyone who watches ATV riding videos, you know how the Akraix riders do some amazingly sick freestyle. "The Quadfather" will certainly not let you down in that aspect. You will feel as if you are ATVing right along with the Akraix riders, as you get to see some on board camera action of the breakneck trails and races.

You can not go wrong with either of these titles. They should be a staple for any ATV riding video collection. If you know somebody who is looking to see what some extreme ATV riding is all about, these two ATV riding videos are a great start.

Kids ATV Safety Tips

There are many people who say that ATV riding is extremely dangerous for kids. Chances are high that you have seen the statistics and the news reports about the ATV related accidents that happen with children every year. While ATVs certainly have the potential to do a lot of harm, the simple fact of the matter is that the majority of ATV related accidents happen because people did not take the right safety precautions.

If you are thinking about buying your kid an ATV, you must be ready to devote time and effort into training your child on safety measures and you must watch them at all times. If you cannot do that then you should not let your kid ride an ATV. However if you can devote the time and effort necessary, your child is going to have a fantastic time. Here are some ATV riding safety tips that you should help your kid follow.

The first tip on the route to ATV safety is to purchase the proper gear. The piece of ATV safety gear that is the most important is the helmet. You have to buy your kid a helmet that has been sanctioned by the Department Of Transportation (DOT). Once you have bought the helmet you have to make sure that it fits your child perfectly. Do not allow your kids to ride an ATV with a helmet that does not fit, and do not buy them a used helmet, because it may not be as protective against impact. Also, other ATV safety gear should be bought for your kid, such as goggles, chest protections, long sleeve shirts, and tall boots. Once you have purchased the proper gear for your kid, enroll them in some ATV safety classes, and make sure they understand how to use their ATV before you let them operate it. And lastly, supervise you kid whenever they ride their ATV. Kids are much less likely to mess about with a parent around, and you should always be there just in case. Follow these ATV Safety Tips, and your kid is sure to have a fun and safe time riding their ATV.

ATV Riding Fun in Southern California

If you are looking for an ATV adventure in Southern California, the Hungry Valley ATV Area is the perfect place for you. The Hungry Valley ATV Area is located just north of Los Angeles in the Tejon Pass. The valley is home to a large selection of ATV trails that span various different types of terrain. The area spans over 130 miles of lush hills, sand washes and grasslands, and it is the second largest ATV area in the California State Park Off Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division.

Due to the amount of variety offered by the Hungry Valley ATV Area, there are trails that are perfect for beginning, moderate, and experienced ATV enthusiasts. Beginning ATV riders would be best off on the more passive country grassland parts of the area, while riders who have more experience will get a good challenge on the trails near the hillier sections. The sand washes in the Hungry Valley ATV Area will also provide a challenge for the experienced ATV rider as well.

The best times to go to the Hungry Valley ATV Area are during Fall and Spring. If you go to the area during these seasons you will be treated to a more mild yet pleasant environment that is hot yet breezy. The Hungry Valley ATV Area is very dry and hot during the summer, so it is recommended that those who are not used to the harshness of California heat go in the cooler months. However, going in the Winter is not recommended because it is very rainy. Have fun riding your ATV in Hungry Valley, and make sure you ride safely!

Buying an ATV For Your Kid: All You Need To Know

You have most likely heard about some of the child related ATV accidents that have occurred over the past couple years. It is certainly true that an ATVs can be dangerous when used by people who have no clue what proper operation and safety provisions are. Taking the proper safety measures will drastically decrease the chance of an ATV related injury. The majority of the tragic ATV accidents that have occurred in the past happened mainly because the proper safety measures were not enforced. If you are thinking about purchasing an ATV for your kid, you must be fully prepared to take all of the necessary safety precautions to ensure your kid's safety. It takes a lot of time, energy, and a bit of money, but it is well worth the effort.

For kids under the age of 12 the ATV you purchase should be under 70cc. ATVs that are in the range of 70cc to 90cc are most appropriate for children ages 12 to 16. Shifting is hard for many kids to get the hang of at first, so it is a good idea to get an automatic ATV for your kid to learn to ride, so they don't have bother with shifting gears when they're just beginning.

Never forget that safety is essential. If you are seriously thinking about buying an ATV for your kid, following all of the safety rules is simply a must. Enroll your child in some ATV riding classes, buy the correct safety gear, and always supervise your child while they are riding incase of an accident. The most crucial piece of safety gear is a helmet. You have to buy a helmet that has been authorized by the Department of Transportation (DOT). You have to make sure that it is just the right size for your child. Do not let your kid ride an ATV with a used helmet, because it may potentially be much less resistant to impact, and less likely to protect them in an accident. Also, other ATV safety gear should be purchased as well, such as chest protections, long sleeves to cover the arms, goggles, and tall boots for the legs. There is no reason not to buy an ATV for your kid, but remember to be safe!

Respect The Land While Riding Your ATV

Respect for the land is something that every ATV enthusiast should have. When you ride your ATV on designated trails, you should always stick to those trails. The majority of environments and ecosystems around most ATV trails and riding areas are very fragile.

Tampering with the environment could potentially harm the life of an animal, or that of the land itself. While you use the land with your ATV, do not litter, do not deviate from your trails, do not interact with any animals, and do not partake in any other activities that could otherwise harm of damage the land.

Even if the concerns of the wildlife and the environment do not matter to you, it is in your best interest to respect the land while riding your ATV. If you exploit and abuse trails with your ATV you may get the privilege of riding in that trail taken from you. A lot of ATV trails and areas have been shut down over the years due to extensive abuse to the environment by irresponsible ATV riders. The actions of these few ATV riders that did not respect the land makes people think that all ATV enthusiasts are just as irresponsible. And we all know this is not true. If you do not respect the land while you ride on it with your ATV, you will not have anything to ride on after awhile, so please be respectful of the land and the other riders who are enjoying the same ATV experience that you do. If you are caught going off trail or otherwise violating the environment, you will likely face some serious legal repercussions, and if enough people do it, the trail may be shut down. Remember to respect the land while riding your ATV, and treat it as if it were your own home.

All You Need To Know About Buying New Tires For Your ATV

So, you want a new set of tires for your ATV but you're not sure exactly what kind you should get? Well, you have come to the right article. In this article we will tell you everything you need to know about choosing the right pair of tires for your ATV.

The first step in buying a new set of tires for your ATV is to determine what size your current tires are. This should be marked n the tires, but if it is not, just get a ruler and bend down under your ATV and measure the width of the tires. Write it down and bring it with you to the store and you should be able to find the correct size. This is also what you should do while trying to get new rims for your ATVs tires. Only you would be measuring the ATV's tire rims, and not the tires themselves, of course. It is important to get the right size rim or tire, because you will not be able to use the wrong size on your ATV.

Once you have got the size or measurement of your ATV tires, it is time to decide what type of tire you want. There are flat ATV tires, round tires, and various different kinds to treads available. The majority of ATV riders prefer flat tires to round because round tires do not handle turns as well. Another thing to consider while choosing tires for your ATV is whether your want a small tire or a bigger tire. Small ATV tires offer more support for fast speeds, but they lack much clearance. Bigger ATV tires will allow for much more clearance and will give you more of a smooth and steady ride, but they are not equipped for higher speeds.

And finally, the last thing to consider while buying tires for your ATV is what type of tread patterns you need. There is treading available for all types of terrain, from mud to sand to trails and beyond. ATV tires with specialized tread will cost you more, so if you can't afford them, a pair of general terrain tires should suite you just fine.

Using Your ATV To Plow

If you live in a climate where it snows half of the year, you no doubt itch to ride your ATV during those cold winter months. You probably also wish you had a snowplow to plow out your driveway instead of having to do it by hand. Welcome to the world where these two forces had finally been combined. You can attach a plow to your own ATV and ride it in winter!

The WARN Company makes a terrific ATV Cyclone blade, which is angled for any kind of plowing job. The design on this ATV Cyclone blade is tapered which pushes the snow or the dirt in an upward motion and away from the surface which you are trying to clear. Even in very heavy winters, this ATV plow blade can handle the job. The ATV Cyclone Blade is made with a very heavy 11 gauge steel. the ribbing is extremely stiff. The skid pins adjust quickly which allows for super power without difficulty. A steel wear bar for replacement comes standard.

Yellow in color, the ATV Cyclone blade comes and 48in., 54in., or 60in sizes. These ATV blades are created from a low alloy, high strength steel. to increase rigidity, the outer blade ribs are 3/16in. The ribs on the ATV Cyclone Blade also create a reduction in weight which in turn causes better handling and performance while you plow. Six inch oversized bushings in the base and one and a half inch in the blade ribs one make call for shock absorption and wear reduction.

So, if it is wintertime, why not kill two birds with one stone and get yourself an ATV Cyclone blade? Call Raceway ATV at 1-888-RACE ATV and tell them you want the WARN Cyclone Blade, you'll be glad you did!

Interesting Facts About Pennsylvania and ATV Riding

For those interested in the facts and statistics regarding ATV riding, this article should certainly appeal to you.

Of all of the 50 states, Pennsylvania rates second place in annual sales of ATVs. This is a close second to California, which has a population of somewhere around 35 million, whereas Pennsylvania has a population of less than twelve and a half million. In Pennsylvania, in total, the department of conservation and natural resources gives an approximate estimate of 485,000 ATVs. The Allegheny national forest has only 108 miles worth of trail. With such a small amount of trail, those same 485,000 ATVs would not have room to be parked on the length of off-road provided.

Pennsylvania charges a tax of 43.7 cents on each gallon of gasoline purchased. Of that 43.7 cents, 18.2 cents of that goes directly to our Federal government. On average, a Pennsylvania ATV rider will use approximately 50 gallons a year of fuel in his or her ATV. annually, this is the equivalent of approximately $12.75 per year for an ATV rider to pay in fuel tax, none of which goes back into the land to for creating trails for ATV riders.

Approximately 1.4 million acres of land in Pennsylvania is owned by the Pennsylvania game commission. None of this land is available for use as ATV trail land. the Pennsylvania game commission alleges the land to be "private property", and Pennsylvania game commission authorities have made it very clear that they will never allow ATV riding on game lands. In Pennsylvania, approximately 1 million people are hunters. At least 40% of these hunters own ATVs.

There are 220,000 ATVs which have titles in Pennsylvania. 130,000 of these titled ATVs are registered. In Pennsylvania state forests, 188 miles of ATV trails are available. Combined with others, a total of 296 miles of ATV trails are available in Pennsylvania. With the average ATV been approximately 5ft. long, end to end there are 460 miles worth of ATVs in Pennsylvania.

Hopefully, armed with this information, Pennsylvania ATV riders can band together to make a difference.

How To Choose The Right Brake Pads For Your ATV

Choosing the right brake pads for your ATV can be a rather tedious task. There are many different types of brake pads for available for ATVs, made from various different types of materials and customized for different settings. In this article we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different types of ATV brake pad materials. While this is by no means a complete list, this article should give you a good idea of what to look for when buying new break pads for your ATV.

Let's start with organic break pads. Most organic ATV brake pads are excellent at stopping in more intense conditions, such as very wet or muddy terrain. Organic ATV pads are also very easy on rotors, however, if you do get them muddy or sandy, they will have a very short life span. When faced with these conditions, organic ATV brake pads tend to more or less fall apart after two weeks. And even in normal conditions, organic pads will still wear much quicker than most other ATV brake pads.

Full Metallic brake pads are another type of pad used for ATVs. Full Metallic ATV brake pads will not hold up very well against mud or wetness, but they are extremely durable and will last in your ATV a very long time. Yet another type of material used for ATV brake pads is Semi Metallic. Semi Metallic brake pads and great in normal conditions, but they will give your ATV a lot of hassle in muddy or wet terrain. However, they are durable and will last in your ATV for a season or so. Hopefully this has helped you learn more about the type of ATV brake pads that are right for you. If not, go to the nearest ATV store and they should be able to help you pick the kind that best suit you.

ATV Riding For The Disabled

For those who are physically challenged, it is difficult to find recreation that is both a fun and something to do outdoors. Fortunately, ATV riding happens to fall into both of those categories for the disabled. Founded in Wisconsin, the Adaptive Sportsman group has begun organizing many gatherings and trips for their members who happen to be physically challenged.

People who are ordinarily wheelchair bound are finally able to ride the trails of OHV trail system via ATVs, thanks to Adaptive Sportsman. The ride begins at Pine Forest Lodge which is not only wheelchair accessible, but also offers specified activities for those who are disabled including canoeing, fishing, and kayaking.

For those who are disabled, ATVs are considered a wonderful "equalizer" to the able bodied. In an ATV, a disabled person who would not ordinarily get to see nature and woodsy areas are now able to with as much ease as anyone else. With the use of a simple automatic shift, an ATV can be modified very simply if at all so that disabled riders can easily use these ATVs. Many disabled people aren't even aware that they are able to use an ATV, which is what makes Adaptive Sportsman such a valuable group.

For some people with disabilities, they may find that the enormous amount of freedom that riding an ATV provides, far outweighs any of the slight risks that are involved with ATV riding. And, after ATV riding just a few times, one may find him or herself wanting to velcro his or her legs to the ATV so that they can ride with a bit more vigor.

Disability does not equal incapability. The ATV, the great equalizer, is mechanical proof of that.

ATV'ers - Get Involved In Pennsylvania

There are several clubs that have been formed solely for the purpose of promoting ATV riding. If you are interested in getting involved with promoting ATV riding, it is simple to find out where the nearest organization is to you. The Pennsylvania Off-Highway Vehicle Association is an association for ATV riders, and has information online at www.paohv.org.

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has a resource of their own. They have collected money from fees and fines, and with this money they are able to award grants to organizations, both profit and nonprofit, in order to benefit ATV riding trails on lands which are unowned by the country, but that are privately owned. These grants are able to be used for the purpose of buying land for ATV riding, as well as for developing the plans, having the area surveyed, in creating the trails for ATV riding as well as making ATV parks. with a grant from DCNR, equipment can be bought, and ATV riding training could be implemented. For those seeking an ATV grant from DCNR, you can typically apply for grants between the months of August and October each year. for further information regarding applying for an ATV grant from DCNR, you can call (717)-783-2661.

if your preferred way of getting involved with ATV riding is to volunteer, DCNR promotes a capacious volunteer program which allows volunteers to improve state Parks and state forests in Pennsylvania. This volunteer work can encompass anything from trail maintenance to tree planting. For any avid ATV rider whose goal is to give back to the land, DCNR is your opportunity. Your local state park or state forest district will have more information.
