Finding Motorcycle Safety Instruction
If you are a new owner of a motorcycle, you will probably be in search of a school or class that can give you a bit of instruction on safety when riding. There are many different options available to motorcycle riders that can give good instruction as well as many safety tips to help out along the way. Even if you are already a rider, you could also take a course to help sharpen your skills.
One of the things that many riders will do when looking for a school is check the telephone book. This is a good option, especially if you may have heard about certain schools or courses within your area and you are just unsure where to start. With the technology today, many people will go to the internet as well to help them out. Not only can you use the internet to find locations of classes within your area, some people may even find that they can take some of the courses that they are searching for right on their home computer.
Many people do not realize that they can also call the local highway patrol in their area to find these classes. The state troopers department can be a great resource for finding some of the best motorcycle training schools in your area. Often times, the schools that they will refer you to are also the most reasonably priced as well.
Whichever avenue you choose to pursue your courses, keep in mind how important they can be. You may even have to take them before even getting your motorcycle license because some states do require it. Either way, these courses can give you some great tips and help you learn how to stay safe.

Stabilizing Your Motorcycle's Gasoline For Winterizing
When you winterize your bike, you have to think about the gas tank. It should take you between an hour or two to get your bike's gas tank properly winterized. First of all, you'll want to run your bike for one last time. Don't worry about the roads possibly being too snowy or salty, because you'll be washinig your bike before the final lock-down for the winter season.
Ride your bike all over, and get a really nice ride out of it. If you do this during the autumn season, you should be sure to take your camera and get some nice fall foliage pictures. Before you arrive at your final destination (where you'll be storing your bike), stop in at the gas station and fill 'er up. If you want to make sure that your gasoline and gas stabilizer solution extra well, put the stabilizer in the bike just before you refill the tank. You want to make sure to store your bike on a full tank, so make sure it is your last and closest stop before you reach the storage facility.
This bike ride is crucial, as you'll want to make sure that the bike is good and hot. Keep the bike at the right operating temperature for a good, long period of time. The minimum of twenty minutes should be a guideline before taking your bike to the gas station. This will make sure that no moisture is in the tank as well as making sure the oil is hot enough to get the by-products of combustion easier to be removed when you do your oil change on your bike.
If you've decided to wait on adding the stabilizer in your bike's gas tank, do so as soon as you get back. Run your bike for another good five minutes if you have waited to add the stabilizer so that you know that it's gone through your bike's entire system. Be sure not to do this in an enclosed space, as carbon monoxide fumes will escape and can be deadly. An important note for those who need their bike to be nice and chromed--keeping the engine running while sitting still will discolor your pipes.
It is very important to stabilize your gasoline in your bike before winterizing, because the compounds which make up gasoline will eventually harden and turn into sludge. This will muck up your carburators and cause them not to work. Stabilizer will help greatly in the prevention of this.

Keeping Your Bike Maintained
In order to keep your bike working properly for the spring, you'll want to make sure that you take good care of your bike during the winter months while it's stored away. You don't want to run the engine or you'll risk getting moisture in it. Make sure to oil up your cables and just work through your controls to get them moving a little bit during the winter. You'll also want to change your brake fluid in your bike, as well as the clutch fluid and any other fluids.
You will also want to check your air filter, too, and if you need it done, replace it. Make sure that nothing has loosened up that shouldn't be. This includes bolts as well as your chain. Your bike tires also need a quick once over to make sure nothing has happened to them such as uneven wear or cuts and that sort of thing.
The basics in checking your bike over the winter are just making sure that everything gets moved, lubed and tightened. If you happen to find any rust spots, you'll need to sand down to the metal, and repaint. If you've washed your bike thoroughly before storage, this shouldn't be an issue, but you never know what could happen.
One other item you may want to check off your list during this non-riding season is to order spark plugs for your bike. This is not something that is absolutely necessary, but in most cases spark plugs do not cost that much and, if you have ever needed a spark plug replaced and not had one, you know what an annoyance it can be. Having good spark plugs in your bike will make it just that much nicer to be able to get up and ride off in the sunset on that first fifty-five degree day in February.

Storing Your Bike For Winter
If you're like most bike owners, your bike is your baby. When the time of the year comes when you are forced to part with your little darling, you want to take the best care of it that you can. Before you start, here are some of the things that you'll need to pick up to winterize your bike.
First of all and foremost, you'll need a place to store your bike. You'll really do great to store your bike inside if possible, rather than just covering it up with a bike tarp. You want to keep the bike in a place out of any extreme temperatures and out of the elements. It's best not to keep your bike in an area that has a lot of chemical fumes because the rubber on the bike can get dried out. Motors and electric heaters will cause the same kinds of damage to your bike, so take care to avoid keeping your bike in that type of storage area as well.
The next step in finding the perfect, cozy, winter home for your bike is to make sure that it is somewhere that it is sure not to get knocked over. Somewhere with a level and smooth ground is the ideal flooring for your bike, and, if you must put your bike in where it will be sharing the place with people at any given time, try to find the most out-of-the-way area in which to keep it.
When you are seeking an area for your bike, keep in mind that dirt isn't the greatest surface to keep the bike on. This is due to the fact that moisture will come up from the surface and get under the bike tarp that you'll be placing on your bike.
What you'll need to buy at the auto parts store to get yourself started winterizing your bike (after procuring the perfect bike haven for the winter) are just a few items:
Enough oil to change the oil in your bike 1. Your favorite brands of cleaning and waxing solutions for your bike 2. Fuel Stabilizing solution 3. An oil filter 4. Any tools that you don't already have for the body work, spark plugs, gas tank and windscreen
With a proper storage area for your bike and the aforementioned list of items for your bike, you'll be well on your way to properly winterizing your bike.

Taking Your Bike Out of Storage
Finally the weather is warm enough for you to get back onto your bike for a much anticipated first ride of the year! Don't get too excited yet... you'll have a little bit of work to do, but for your iron horse, it is worth it, isn't it?
First of all, once you take the cover off of your bike, you'll want to check the tire pressure with your tire gauge. No self-respecting bike rider should be without a tire gauge. Remove your bike from the stands (if applicable) and you will want to wash her off. Aside from removing dust from your bike and removing any extra WD40 or anything else that may have gotten on your bike during storage, you'll certainly want to wash her off so that she sparkles like a diamond in the sun.
You will want to install the battery back into your bike, making sure that it is clean and charged. If you have kept your battery clean, warm and charged variously throughout the winter, this should not be an issue.
For people with bikes that have a fuel petcock, you can now turn on your fuel system. For settings on your fuel petcock, you will want to set the petcock to the "PRI" setting. Leave it for only about twenty seconds, then turn it to the "ON" setting. If there is no "PRI" setting, you can simply turn it on. For fuel pump bikes, set your kill switch to "RUN".
If you have placed any kinds of covers on any of your intakes or exhausts, you can remove those now. You are now closer than ever to that first ride. Move your bike into an area with great ventilation, and ladies and gentleman, you may start those engines! You can run your bike for about twenty minutes, or for the amount of time it takes for the fan to come on two times. If you have a fuel system, turn it off.
As much as you don't want to, you should really do an oil change now. You can put some great quality stuff in now, rather than the cheap oil you used for winter storage. Now that your bike has an entirely full tank of gas in it, you better go burn all of it of, and then put some kind of additive fuel system cleaner (like Techron or something similar) for the next two tanks worth or so, and remember to change the spark plugs. Enjoy this seasons riding!

How To Setup A Regular Maintenance Schedule For Your Motorcycle
As many motorcycle owners already know, it is very important that you take good care of your bike and keep it on a regular maintenance schedule. Keeping your motorcycle taken care of will not only prolong the life of your ride, but it can also keep you safe as well. Good maintenance means monthly and yearly checks as well as tune-ups and even short checks before each time you set out to ride.
When you are setting out to ride, there are several different things that you should be inspecting for your own safety. For example, always checking your tires can be a great safety measure. You may even want to check all of your nuts and bolts as well to make sure that everything is perfectly tightened. Many riders will often forget to check their headlight and their signals before they head out. Checking all of this stuff before every ride may be an extra step, but it could be one that you would regret missing later down the road if something were to happen.
For a regular maintenance schedule on your motorcycle, there are several things that you can go through and take care of yourself. Checking your oil level as well as all of your other fluid levels is always a good move. Another smart thing that you could do yourself is change the spark plugs every year. Many experts will say that you should replace the spark plug wires as well every two years.
Once you have started your motorcycle with regular maintenance and checks, you are on the road to a safe future. Keeping track of any problems with your motorcycle before they start could possibly save your life as well.

A Cleansing Goodbye To Your Bike
Before you put your bike away for the winter, it is always a terrific idea to wash, dry and wax it. The important reason for doing this, is to get any additional salt off of your bike that may have collected in your rides from late in the season. Salt will oxidize on the metal of your bike; in other words, this will rust your bike, big time!
Let's face it, most of us just love to wash our bikes; it's really a great feeling to clean your bike up nice and shiny, so you can stand back and look at the hot paint job and the sparkling chrome. So take your time and really enjoy the last bike wash of the season before putting her away for the winter.
Many bikers prefer to use specialized chemical washes and waxes on their bike. This is a great idea to get your bike nice and sparkly, but is not altogether necessary. A mild soap and tap water works fine. It is just important to clean the entire bike, including the underneath, the entire suspension system and wheels. Washing your bike from top to bottom works the best, as this prevents getting soap on the parts of the bike that have already been washed.
Drying is a crucial part of washing your bike. Drying also prevents rust, and you have to dry before you can wax. You may not have to worry about drying the engine, but the chrome, frame and wheels definitely need drying.
Each part of your bike that is painted be waxed. Waxing is an important step in keeping your bike from rusting during the winter months.
For those with a pressure washer, make sure to know not to point that strong stream of water onto any crucial parts of the bike that could be damaged by water.

Storing Your Bike for Winter - Protect The Frame
It's not a huge endeavor to protect your bike's frame from the Winter elements, however it is a very important step in the process of Winterizing your bike.
Basically when you do this process, you're protecting your bike's metal parts that are have the possibility of being exposed to the elements. The estimated time to run through the routine of winterizing your bike frame is about ten to thirty minutes.
To protect the metal parts of your bike for Winter, simply spray the exposed metal parts of your bike with a good rust inhibitor such as WD-40, Cosmoline, or Maximas Chain Wax works well.
Doing this simple step will prevent rust and corrosion from happening on your bike frame during the Winter months and it can set in faster than you might think. You just need to make sure that you do a thorough job removing these chemicals that you apply to the frame when you want to ride your bike again in the Spring.
If you do see a rusty spot on your bike frame, you'll want to spray it well with a rust inhibitor at the very least and most likely address the rusty spot and prevent it from doing any more damage to your bike during the Winter storage time.
Also, if you happen to get any ChainWax/WD40/cosmoline/whatever rust inhibitor you chose to use, on your bike's parts. You can do a little spot washing to remove the chemicals and insure they don't wreck the finish of your bike while it is in Winter storage.
A fast way to remove these chemicals is to use a diluted solution of a degreaser, organic or otherwise,it's your choice. Simply spot clean any place you've gotten a rust inhibitor on your bike that the chemical should not have gone. This will insure that you have a well maintained and long lasting bike that will give you years of good riding fun, even after Winter storage!

Use Fogging Oil To Winterize Your Bike
When putting your bike away for the winter, you will want to consider using fogging oil. This could be just a quickie ten minute job, or, depending on how your bike's engine is set up, a couple of hours. You may have to remove your bikes actual gas tank, oil cooler or radiator in order to find your spark plugs.
First thing you will want to do is get the muck and dirt out of the spark plug holes. You can buy those air compressor cans for just such a job, and you will find that this works wonders! If you visit your local bike shop, you should be able to find some fogging oil to purchase. If you absolutely can not find any, even after you ask the clerk, you can use some motor oil or WD40 in lieu of fogging oil, but fogging oil works best in order to get your cylinder walls well lubricated. Use no more than one teaspoon per cylinder. In the case that you are unable to remove the spark plugs you can take off the carburetors and spray the oil in through your bike's intakes. Be sure to put your bike into top gear, and spin your bike's engine by rotating the back wheel slowly approximately ten or fifteen times. If this is not possible, the fogging oil will work as well. If not, use your motor that is left over or the WD40.
The spark plugs should go back into place now. It's your choice put just a tiny bit of anti-seize on them also, so that your threads are protected.
Now put your bike back into the neutral position; perhaps you will need to spin the rear wheel once again so that your transmission shifts correctly on the bike.
If all goes well, your bike will be well on its way to being properly winterized.

A Bike Stand For Winter
When you park your bike for the winter in your storage location, you will want to remember to put it up on a bike stand. Having your bike lean for the entire winter season while you will not be riding it will not cause even distribution to your bike's tires, and you'll end up having to refill your tires again in the spring. This is not an enormously crucial step, however if you have ever had to ride any vehicle on low tires, you know how aggravating this can be.
If your bike is already on a center stand, all you have to do is set it up on the center stand for the winter and your bike is all set.
For those who have a swing bar stand and a front end stand, or for those who have a swing arm stand and a fork stand, you may also store your bike using just these two stands.
If you have only the one kick stand, you do not have to worry about rigging some sort of stand for your bike. This causes the risk of dropping your bike, which is much more serious than worrying about having to fill your bike's tires up in the spring. You will just have to keep in mind over the winter to take heed with your tires.
Your tires are an important aspect to your bike, so you'll want to put them up on a bike stand if at all possible, but remember that it is more important to have a cherry, unscratched bike than it is to have even air distribution in your bike wheels.

Changing Your Bike Oil For Winter
If you have a bike, it is important to change the oil in it before storing it for winter. Doing so will prevent the by-products from gumming up and ruining your carburetors. If you skip this step while winterizing your bike, you may damage your bike permanently.
Please remember that it is very important to dispose of your bike oil in the proper way. Check with local auto parts stores to find out if your state allows for you to bring in the old oil to be recycled.
First, check out your bike's owners manual and fill your oil tank with the proper amount. because you will more than likely be ridding yourself of this oil early on next year, you do not have to buy the most expensive oil. The cheapest oil you can use for your bike works fine.
Once you have changed your oil, you can move the bike to a well ventilated area. Make sure that your engine is still warm and start running it. This will run the new oil through your bike's system and get rid of all of the old, used oil as well. You only need to run the bike for a couple of minutes, and you can stop it. Then put your bike into it's storage facility. Make sure not to run your engine after it has cooled, as this will only serve to form moisture within the bike's engine.
Changing the oil in your bike before winter is one of the most important aspects of winterizing your bike, so do not skip it just to save time and money. By skipping this step, you may end up wasting a lot more money in the long run, trying to fix your bike so that it will run up to snuff again.

Winterizing Your Bike's Battery
While your bike is away in storage, you don't need to have a battery inside of it. The main important thing when winterizing your bike in regards to its battery is that you need to keep it indoors, warm and dry. You should not leave your bike battery outside in the cold, as doing this will freeze your bike battery. When a battery freezes, the solution expands, and then when you go to start it up in the warmer months, your battery will be cracked and spill the acid all over your bike! This, in case you have not yet figured it out, is very, very bad.
If you happen to have a place to store your bike where it won't be exposed to freezing temperatures, then it's perfectly okay to leave the battery in your bike.
You will want to keep your battery charged, however, no matter where you store it. It is important to either put your bike on a "Smart Charger", or a "Trickle Charger". You should continually charge your bike battery throughout the winter. You do not want to "over-charge" your battery, just keep it charged periodically throughout the winter.
You will also need to check the fluids on your battery on a regular basis to ensure that those fluids are not boiling, and clean the battery on a regular basis following manufacturers instructions. If acid has leaked outside of the battery, usually the manufacturers will give you instructions to clean it with baking soda and water. If your battery is maintenance free, do not let the name fool you. You will still need to clean the terminals; instructions should be on the battery information from the manufacturer.

Why You Should Wear Motorcycle / ATV Gloves
The main reason that you wear motorcycle and ATV gloves when riding is to protect your hands in case of an accident. The other reason is to provide good grip on the handle bars and prevent accidents like that from happening, especially in inclimate weather conditions. Also, gloves protect your hands when you're out on the trail from the slapping of tree branches, flying debris and bush limbs.
If you ride an ATV or Motorcycle, the palms of your gloves will be very important, since when you take a spill natural human reaction is to spread your palms and attempt to break your fall. This will lead to a major case of road rash on your hands if you aren't protecting your hands with a good pair of motorcycle or ATV gloves.
For either type of riding, flexibility is an important concern. You need to be able to grip your handle bars tightly for good steering control and you need to be able to have lever control.
Inclimate weather is another concern. You need to make sure your motocross or ATV gloves will keep your hands warm and dry in case you happen to riding in poor weather conditions. Make sure they have tight stitching and good rubber or silicon palms and fingertips. That will insure a good grip when you need it most.
Keeping your hands warm is a job most good riding gloves will do for you. Thor makes some great gloves in their line for this purpose that are well within anyone's price range.
Try on gloves before you buy. Put your hand in the handlebar gripping position, that is how it will be held most and make sure that your gloves are comfortable in that position.
Now that you know the basics for getting a good pair of gloves for riding your motorcycle or ATV, you can shop with confidence and best of all, when you purchase your gloves from Raceway ATV, shipping is free.

Why Should I Wear Boots while Riding an ATV or Motorcycle
Let's face it, riding your ATV or motorcycle is just about as much fun as a person can have legally. But you need to be smart about it. Properly protecting your body when you ride is essential.
You know that you need a helmet, gloves, and goggles and you know exactly why you need those items when you ride. Have you thought about the footwear that you should be wearing when you ride?
Boots are class A protection for your feet, ankles, and lower legs. Riding boots are specifically designed to protect your feet, ankles, shins, and lower legs from flying debris such as rocks, branches, sticks and sometimes even other vehicles. Motocross boots are stiffly designed to protect you against foot movements of the foot and ankle that wouldn't occur naturally. The boot will attempt to stop your foot and ankle from turning in awkward directions and thereby save you from a break in place.
One great example for wearing proper riding boots is if you run into a stationary object such as a tree stump or a log. These can seriously hurt your leg or foot if not properly protected. You might get a bruise if you hit one of these objects when wearing a good pair of riding boots, however if you're not adequately protecting your legs and feet, you could fracture that area on impact.
A good rule of thumb many ATV and motorbike riders use is to dress for a crash. If it doesn't happen, great! If it does, you'll be more than protected and ready.
Use proper protection for your legs and feet when you ride and you're assured of a lot of good safe fun on your ATV or motorcycle.

What is a Chest Protector and is it Necessary?
Short answer is : to protect you and yes. The longer answer that will explain why follows. A chest protector is very necessary riding exquipment because a lot of debris and rocks (roost) gets kicked up by yourself and other riders. That debris and especially rocks, can hit with an amazing amount of force. A chest protector will save you from pain and injury when you get pelted with debris and roost and also during a fall. If you have ever seen a rock the size of a fist lofted into someone's chest, you'll probably say it's worth it right then to get chest protection for yourself when you ride.
There are two types of chest protectors, the plastic protector deflectors that fit on top of your riding gear and cover your until upper body. The type is protective body armor that fits under your clothing when you ride and usually fits snugly to your body as you ride. Either one is great for keeping your body from taking an impact from a flying rock or other debris. Protective body armor is usually a little more expensive but it's a lot less bulky and most of them come with built in kidney belts.
If you are worried about getting your body armor or protector to fit right, don't worry - it's easy! Generally speaking, just buy the same size that you wear when you purchase a t-shirt. If you will be wearing your protector over a jacket, you may want to go one size larger to insure ease of movement.
Thor makes great protectors for your chest when your ride. Check out the entire line of Thor products at Raceway and best of all, shipping is always free.
