What Are The Types Of Motocross Helmets?

If you're looking for a motocross helmet, there are a number of types to choose from. To help you make a better decision, here are some pointers for choosing the best helmet for your individual needs :

Motocross and dirt bike helmets are constructed extra strong and usually have a good chin protection incorporated into their design.
The type of helmet construction gives extra strength because of the chin protection area. Most have full face protection and keeps your face safe from flying rocks and debris that naturally get kicked up during a ride, not only by yourself but by other riders. There is also an area to strap on your goggles on most motocross and dirt bike helmets, don't skip goggles even with a full face visor, your eyes will thank you for it.

Hybrid and dual sport helmets are great for off-road trail riding. Most of them have features borrowed from both street and dirt helmets such as detachable sun visors, flip-down face shields and air-flow venting in the helmets to keep your cool. A few of the dual sport helmets allow you to flip up the chin protector part when you're doing slower rides. If you wear eyeglasses, these helmets are a great choices as the face shield can help protect your eyes when you ride your motorcycle or ATV.

Open face helmets were wildly popular among riders at one point. Their time has passed as people who wore them learned quickly, rocks and flying debris will not only hurt when they impact on your sensitive facial skin, teeth and eyes can be severely damaged. Open face helmets are not recommended for riding any type of OHV.

Youth Helmets are very important. Your child should never ride an ATV or motocross bike without one. Get a full face helmet and give your kids the protection they deserve.

Those are the main types of helmets that are available today, now that you know a little more about them, you can get the helmet that best fits your riding needs, and best of all, helmets from Raceway are always shipped for free!

The Types Of Dirt Bike Boots

Dirt bike boots are a very necessary part of riding and when you're putting together a riding wardrobe, you'll be looking at a lot of choices.

Motocross Boots often have look like they came from straight out of a science fiction movie, with their space-age designs. The hard shells around the major impact areas around the shin, calf and ankle areas especially are made to withstand an impact.

Offroad and dual sport boots are another type of riding boot you will find a lot of types of when you're looking to purchase a pair of riding boots. They are a little lighter and little more flexible than standard motocross boots because they don't have the hard shell armor that motocross boots normally have.

No matter which type of dirt bike boots you get, make sure your boots fit well, try them on and walk around. Another good rule of thumb is to get into your riding position and see if the boots are comfortable then, that will be the position you're in most when you wear them, be sure they are comfortable for you to wear.

Other features you will want in your boots will be a good ankle and heel grip and a strong protective material around the ankle area. Make sure there is strong toe protection such as a shifter pad and there should also be a good stiff sole. Padding and an easy step in are a bonus, the more padding, the more the boots can absorb a shock.

Riding dirt bikes is a blast and it's even more fun to do safely with a great fitting pair of dirt bike boots.

Types of Motorcycle / ATV Gloves

In order to buy the best motorcycle or ATV gloves, you need to educate yourself on the various types of gloves that are available for riding. You know the main purpose of gloves are to give you good grip and protect your hands from flying debris and in case of a fall, your palms will be protected. Most gloves will come with this basely incorporated into the design. Additional, most gloves are weather resistant and should keep your hands warm and dry.

There are gloves specifically made for the type of riding you like to do, whether it is motorcycle, motocross, ATV or other OHV type vehicles.

Motorcycle Gloves and motocross gloves will be designed in a similar fashion. Most of them are made to be very flexible with a comfortable fit and palm protection in the event of a spill when you're riding. Most of these gloves are made from leather. Motorcycle Gloves for rainy weather are another option. Thor makes some great gloves that are water resistant and will let you keep a grip on your handlebars no matter how wet it gets.

Motorcycle gloves for cold weather are another concern. You need your hands to be warm and flexible when you're riding. You can lose valuable grip if you're hands get too cold and that can lead to unsafe riding conditions for yourself.

Most of the weather resistant motorcycle and ATV gloves are constructed using nylon or Gore-Tex. Also, most gloves have extra slight padding in the palms and fingers to help protect your hands in case of an accident.

Gloves for riding your motorcycle and ATV are better made today than ever - now that you know the various types available, get a pair and get yourself riding today!

The Keys To Finding The Right Motocross / ATV Helmet

Choosing the right ATV/Motocross helmet for your riding style is an intensely personal decision. Most helmets made today are constructed using lightweight, space-age materials and are DOT (Department Of Transportation) approved.

A helmet for riding motocross and ATV is the first and most important piece of safety gear you should buy. Motocross and dirt bike helmets are normally designed to be both lighter weight and durable. They usually have full face protection because of the flying debris and rocks ("roost") that gets kicked up during a ride.

ATV helmets are made from durable injection molded plastics and in case of an impact, will offer you unrivaled protection. Most come with full face protection as just as much debris can get kicked around by an ATV as a dirt bike. Most have venting systems to keep you cool and contrary to popular belief, you can actually hear BETTER when you wear a helmet no matter if you ride an ATV or a dirt bike because the wind noise is reduced in your ears.

Make sure your helmet is DOT certified and most of all, try on a helmet before you buy it. Make sure it's not too heavy and fits correctly. A helmet should fit snugly but not constrict your head and it should go on and off with little resistance.

Last but not least, the look of your helmet is again up to you. There are low-key solid color helmets and there are multi-color helmets that are as bright as can be. You can not only be safe, but truly express yourself through your helmet!

What Are The Types Of Motorcycle / ATV Pants?

Are you looking to get a good pair of quality pants to wear when you are out and about on your motorcycle or ATV? There are a bunch of great styles out there that are made with the comfort and safety of the rider in mind. Because there are different styles to choose from, you may want to know some of the differences before you go and make the actual purchase.

If you are going to be riding during the winter months or you are traveling to ride in a colder climate, you should look into a pair of cold weather or winter pants. Pants such as these are specifically designed to keep you toasty and warm while you are out on your ATV or motorcycle. They also have the added convenience of keeping you dry as well when you are bolting through some of the slushier areas. These pants are also made with some extra room in them so you do not feel squished in any way, making it easy for you to be able to move and maneuver as you normally would.

Dual sport and over the boot pants are great for when you are hitting some different terrain on your ATV. Even when you are riding on a motorcycle, pants like these are a comfortable way to protect yourself from all of the elements. The over the boot design is geared toward keeping the muck out of your boots, making for a much more comfy ride. Pants like this are a great idea for riding your motorcycle or ATV just about anywhere.

Tips On Maintaining Your Helmet And Goggles

Your helmet is very important. It will be the only protection between your head and the ground in case of an accident. You need to take care of your helmet and your goggles and make sure that you keep them in top working order.

Helmets age. No matter how good or well made, even the best helmets age due to the plastics, resins, and foams that are the make up the interior of the helmet. Don't hang your helmet off your ATV or motocross bike. This can stretch your chin strap and make your helmet not fit at well, and an ill-fitting helmet isn't safe.

Gasoline can break down resins if your helmet is exposed to it on a daily basis. If you store your helmet in a garage, be sure it is not near a can of gasoline.
Also, helmets are good for one impact only - inspect your helmet for small and tiny fractures in the surface. This would indicate that your helmet has been used in an accident or dropped from a significant height. In either case, the protection qualities of the helmet have been compromised.

Goggles are another item you'll want to take good care of. They do a good job of protection your eyes and shielding them from flying rocks and debris. Over time your goggles will get small scratches in them from doing their jobs and this will make your visibility less than 100%. A quick fix for the scratches is to use a soft clean cloth, like an auto detailing cloth that has no fuzz or lint - a microfiber towel would be best, and spread some Pledge furniture treatment on the lens, use a small bit at a time and rub off the excess. The little scratches on your goggles will be filled.

The best reason to keep your helmet and goggles maintained, is so you don't have to keep buying new ones. Keeping your helmet and goggles clean and ready to use will give you many more hours of safe riding.

What Are The Types Of Chest Protectors?

If you ride an ATV or motocross bike, you know the true value of a good chest protector. If you haven't had the chance to ride and you're doing research on what you need to ride, you will definitely need a chest protector.

Debris and lots of it gets kicked up when you ride ATVs and motocross bikes. Flying rocks (also called "roost"), can hit with enough force to cause injury if you're not wearing chest protection. Also, if you fall off your vehicle or have an impact with a tree, not only will your helmet help protect you, so will a good chest protector.

There are a lot of choices out there for chest protectors and finding the right one for yourself can seem daunting at first. Most chest protectors are designed to protect your chest, back, shoulders, and clavical (collar bone) with protective materials such as high-impact plastic, heavy duty nylon and even kevlar. There are two main types of chest protectors available.

Plastic Chest Protectors or Deflectors which is a type of chest protector designed to be worn over your riding jersey and normally has an injection molded durable heavy duty chassis and molded shoulders. Back protection is normally included and upper arms also. Most of these type of chest protectors have venting to keep you cool and an easy on/easy off closure system. For the best protection when you're riding fast and hard or racing, a plastic chest protector is usually the best choice for this type of riding.

Protective Body Armor is another choice and is worn under your jersey and fits snugly to your body. The good thing about protective body armor is that it is less restrictive of movement than plastic chest protectors.

Depending on your riding style, an under-jersey or over-jersey body armor will be your choice, but always wear chest protection when you ride.

What Should I Look For When Shopping For An ATV Or Motorcycle Jacket?

If you have been looking for a great jacket to wear when you are out riding your ATV or motorcycle, one of the main things that you want would be comfort. Nothing could be worse than trying to ease into a corner or maneuver around and feeling like you are unable to move freely. Luckily for you, there are many great jackets out on the market today that are make with the ATV or motorcycle enthusiast in mind.

When you are out riding in some pretty hot weather most of the time, you may want to think about getting yourself the kind of jacket that will allow you to remove the sleeves. Turning your jacket into a vest can be great to help you breath a bit while riding your ATV or motorcycle, while still being able to enjoy the protection that a jacket can provide. Also, when you are getting a bit overheated, you may want to have a jacket that you can remove the liner as well.

Because you may have to worry about the occasional flying rocks and other matter when you are hitting the terrain for some great ATV riding, you should look into a jacket that offers a bit of padding as well. This padding may also be a bit helpful if you were to have an unfortunate spill. Pockets are a well-known wonderful addition to any jacket, especially if you are riding on your motorcycle or ATV. This can be a good way to hold on to some items within your jacket that you may not be able to hold elsewhere while riding your ATV or motorcycle.

Getting The Right Motorcycle / ATV Pants

When you are getting ready to go out for a ride on your ATV or motorcycle, are you putting on a pair of pants that are geared specifically for you? If not, then you are definitely in the market for a great pair of riding pants. Wearing the right pair of riding pants can make a world of difference when you are getting ready to hit some rugged terrain or the wide open road.

First, you will want to determine the type of weather that you are going to be riding in. If you are going to be out riding around on your motorcycle or ATV in some pretty hot weather, you are going to want to get a pair of hot weather pants. This type of pant can be helpful by giving you the protection that you desire while still leaving you with the ability to breathe. You surely do not want to be out in 95 degree weather with a pair of ultra-thick riding pants on.

Are you looking for a bit of added protection that you can wear underneath your regular pants? You can also get yourself a good pair of padded riding shorts. These shorts are just perfect to wear in place of your underwear to give you extra protection. Protection in some of the more tender areas that you do not want to have bounced against the seat!

When you are looking for the right pair of pants to ride in, you want to keep your comfort in mind. The last thing that you want is to feel restricted when you are riding your ATV or motorcycle.

Selecting the Right Motorcycle / ATV Glove

When you are choosing a pair of motorcycle or ATV gloves you will have a lot of great choices and it might be hard to narrow down if you're not entirely sure what you're looking for.

Motorcycle and ATV gloves serve a two fold purpose, to protect your hands in case of a spill and to protect your hands from the cold and other elements so you don't get in a spill situation on your bike or ATV.

If you do a lot of wet-weather riding, you'll want gloves that are water resistant with good closures to insure that the mud and water stay out of your gloves and possibly your riding jersey.

You're going to want something that has a good rubberized palm and finger tips so you can have a good grip and lever control. Leather is one of most popular materials to make these type of gloves out of. You can most likely find a style that suits your taste.

Keeping your hands warm in the cooler months is a big concern. Cold hands don't have a good grip and losing your grip can be very dangerous to your safety. Make sure that your gloves fit correctly. Simply put your hands in the gloves and fold your hand over into a riding position. Make sure your gloves don't bunch up or crawl when you curl your fingers. You should have good free movement of your hands. Thor makes some of the best gloves around for keeping your hands warm.

Now that you know some basics for choosing a good pair of motorcycle or ATV gloves for yourself, picking out a pair should be a breeze.

Why Should I Wear A Jacket While Riding An ATV ?

When you are out tearing up the turf on your ATV, it is always best that you wear a jacket for protection. The same goes when you are out riding on your motorcycle as well. You would not want to walk through the rain without an umbrella, would you? Nor would you want to sit in freezing temperatures without a warm, winter jacket.

Being out and about riding on your ATV or motorcycle means that you are exposing yourself to the elements. By wearing a jacket, you will protect yourself not only from rainy weather, but also from flying sand or little bits of debris. Many of you know as well that a bug hitting you on the arm when you are flying down the road on your motorcycle is not such a sweet feeling. If you were wearing a jacket, you may not have even felt it at all.

If you are out riding and wearing something like a motorcycle enduro jacket, you would be protected from pretty much all of the elements that you would normally be exposed to on your motorcycle or ATV. Even when it is hot out, it may be a good idea to slap on a lightweight jacket like this to protect you from some of the more harmful rays of the sun. Think about how much less it would hurt if you were wearing a jacket if you suddenly had a few small rocks flying up at you while on your ATV. A good motorcycle or ATV jacket can come in pretty handy for any rider.

Finding The Right Motocross Chest Protector

You should never ride motocross without a chest protector any more than you would get on your bike without a helmet. Rocks and some can be the size of your fist, get launched or "roosted" by the wheels of your bike and if someone else roosts a rock and it hits you in the chest it can really hurt you. There have been incidents of broken collar bones and more and more often than not those injuries could have been prevented by wearing chest protection.

Now, there are two main kinds of chest protection and which one you want to wear is entirely up to you. The first type of chest protectors are heavily molded plastic that covers your chest, back, shoulders and collarbone with a heavily molded plastic form that fits over your riding jersey. This is the best protection you can get. The other type fits under your riding jersey and is called Body Armor. This type of protection fits snugly to your body and won't restrict your movement and most have vented air flow to keep you from over heating when you're riding. However, they are good, but they will not protect you to the extent that an over the jersey chest protector will.

Getting a good fit for your chest protector is easy. Just buy the same size you wear in a t-shirt for the under the jersey body armor and if you're getting a plastic chest protector that will be worn outside your jersey, it's best to get a size larger in case you're wearing a jacket in colder weather.

How to Get the Right Motocross Boot And Break Them In

You know you need proper motocross boots when you ride and you know exactly why you need them, because broken ankles and feet can seriously put a dent in your riding time and simply wearing good boots can prevent this from happening to you.

There are a number of different types of dirt bike & motocross boots made and you need to find the right pair for the type of riding that you do most.

Motocross Boots often look very futuristic and have hard shells around the most most common impact areas, normally around the foot and calf. If you like to race motocross or you do a lot of serious off-road riding, these are the boots for you. Investing in a good pair of motocross boots is cheap insurance compared to the price of an emergency room visit and being laid up with a broken leg.

Off Road & Dual Sport Boots are a great alterative choice if you don't want to wear motocross boots. Most of these type of riding boots have have the features you need for riding off-road such as steel toes, shifter and shin padding, waterproof material and a strong, impact resistant design.

After you purchase your new boots, it's a snap to break them in. First, wear them and walk around in your new boots. Another good way to loosen them up for wear is to put a heavy coat of mink oil on your boots and put them in the oven at about 150 degrees for roughly one hour. The oil will be absorbed into the boot and become very pliable. Last way, if you're itching to get out of the house, put on your new boots and take them for a long ride. It's a long way to break them in, but one of the most fun!

Ways to keep comfortable wearing ATV / Motorcycle Pants

Comfort is of the utmost importance when you are looking to have a great time while you are out riding on your ATV or motorcycle. Wearing some really comfortable pants can make all the difference between a good ride and an amazing ride. In addition to wearing a good pair of riding pants, you may also want to think about some other tips and ideas that can keep your ripping along through the terrain or down the road in sheer comfort.

If you are going to be riding about in some pretty chilly weather, you may want to think about trying to layer up your clothing a bit. Many riders do not realize that it is actually a pretty good idea to throw on a pair of long pants made with polyester underneath another pair of riding pants. By doing this, you can end up staying warmer because the polyester brings the humidity away from your body. The last thing that you want is to feel a sticky, cold layer of sweat on your body when you are riding on your motorcycle or ATV.

Many riders do however know a good secret to keep their behind from getting chafed on long, rough rides. Nothing is worse at the end of the day than feeling the effects of all of the bumps that hammered your rump while you were out on your motorcycle or ATV. The best way to protect your fanny is by sprinkling a little powder inside of your riding shorts. This can help with the chafing as well as keep you as dry as a baby's bottom while you are on a motorcycle or ATV ride!

Helmets are good for one impact only, if you have a helmet that was involved in an impact or was dropped from a height to cause small cracks in the helmet, replace it- it will not protect your child in the event of a fall or accident.

The kids AFX full face helmet is DOT certified and will help protect your child from flying debris and other small objects that the ATV and motocross bike wheels kick up when riding. Wearing one of these multi-color or solid color helmets along with a great pair of goggles, your kids will be ready to ride the trails in safety and have maximum fun.

What Are Some Techniques I Need To Learn Before Racing Motocross?

After you've gotten your safety gear, read up on the subject of motorcross and decided you want to learn to ride, you need to learn a few basic techniques.

The position of your body is all-important. Your center of gravity depends on where your body is in relation to the bike. You need to move your body for jumps, turns and hills. You need to stand at certain points and sit at others.

The other important technique you need to learn when racing motorcross, is your proper braking techniques. Motorcross bikes use front and back braking systems. You can learn to corner, jump and whoops by using your brakes. New riders depend on their brakes for controlling their bikes in the beginning, as they learn new skills, motorcross riders learn that they can use their brakes not only for basic control, but for jumping and other cool tricks.

Your track conditions determine a lot of how you're going to ride. If the tracks are rough, muddy or sandy, obviously your motorcross riding style will be different from a track that is hard-packed or marbly. You'll do less leaning on your motorcross bike when you corner on harder tracks as they tend to be a little more slick and you don't want to shift your center of gravity when you don't have the best in traction or your motorcross bike can simply shoot out from underneath you.

Speaking of cornering, that is another technique you need to master. You need to know when to sit down, lean, stick your leg out, accelerate and the right time to brake.

Jumping is on the most fun aspects of motorcross. Practice your jumping before you race, in the middle of a track is not the time to get brave and try out your jumping skills. Start small on a practice track and learn when to jump small, as time goes by you can jump higher and longer.

Motorcross is a fun sport and with a short list of skills, it can be an amazing ride!
