Get Involved Helping Maintain Oregon's ATV Trails
Oregon is a place of pristine beauty and it has some wonderful trails to ride your ATV on. A lot of irresponsible behavior from some ATVers has resulted in some premature terrain damage and has led to the closure of many trail systems.
In Oregon, the tax that is paid for fuel and the revenue from OHV permits, pays for the maintenance of the State OHV systems. In this way the ATV trail systems are paid for by the users of those trail systems
The best way you can help maintain trail systems in Oregon is to ride responsibly. Ride with respect and care to the ATV trails. You can do this by staying on the designated ATV trails, pack out your own trash and be responsible when and where you camp. Ride only where you are permitted to ride and respect private property.
Helping to preserve the lands you ride your ATVs on and especially wet areas and streams through treading lightly is a must for land conservation practices. If you must cross water, ride carefully and only at designated spots.
Another thing you can do is respect the wildlife in the areas that you ride your ATVs, when they flee from you, they use valuable energy reserves, try to always view them from a distance whenever possible.
Tread lightly and to that is really easy to remember as put forth by the fine folks at Tread Lightly:
Travel and recreate with minimum impact Respect the environment and the rights of others Educate yourself, plan and prepare before you go Allow for future use of the outdoors, leave it better than you found it Discover the rewards of responsible recreation By doing this the ATV trails in Oregon will be maintained and ready for future generations of ATVers to enjoy!

How You Can Help Keep ATV Trails Open
Respecting and being aware of environmental concerns is a very relevant subject to ATV riders and ATV Manufacturers. Every one should be aware of their role in keeping ATV trails open and publicly accessible for those who ride. We all have a stake in safe, responsible riding and land use.
You can help keep ATV riding trails open by maintaining good relationships with private land owners, land managers, campers, hikers and other riders. Common sense and common courtesy is usually all that is needed while operating your ATV.
Here are a few guidelines and tips to help you out:
Keep your ATV quiet. ATVs are designed to be relatively quiet while still giving good performance, smooth engine torque and spark suppression. Too much noise disturbs wildlife any land owners and anyone else in the area
Obey trail markers and closed signs. There are many reasons why an area may be closed to ATVs including the existence of fire hazard, refuge to wildlife or plant life and safety reasons for ATV riders. You may not always know the reason just stay out!
Leave gates and fences the way you found them. This is important on private lands where livestock may be kept. You wouldn't want to be the ATV rider who let the cows out!
Leave the area as clean as you found it or cleaner.
Be courteous to others you may meet on the trail. Always yield to pedestrians.
If you meet any horses on the trail shut off your ATVs engine. There should be separate trails for horses but be aware that the ATVs engine noise will startle them.
Approach livestock or wildlife on the trail slowly. If you startle them they may head directly into your path. Try to prevent collisions with your ATV.
Whenever you talk to the land owner or land managers or anyone else you meet remember to take off your helmet it will give the impression of being friendlier and you will appear less intimidating.
If you want to keep ATV trails open its going to take some consideration and courtesy from all ATV riders.

ATV Mudding
Riding your ATV in the mud is something a lot of people love to do, but it's really bad for the terrain at large and not the safest environment to ride your ATV in.
There are some nuances to using your ATV in muddy areas, most people assume if you come across a big, muddy mudhole that you just hit the throttle and hope for the best, and that is why those people get stuck and have to get their ATVs towed out of the big, muddy mud holes.
Most mud holes are best handled in first gear, and another good trick for navigating your ATV through a mudhole is to keep your weight back on the seat to help keep your air intake clear and above the water line.
If the muddy water gets so deep that your ATV begins to float, hold your throttle and don't let your engine stop as that will let water into all the vent hoses and that won't equal a good day of ATVing for you if that scenario happens. As you hold your throttle, keep your front end up and let the tires search for traction to hopefully get you out of that situation quickly.
If you feel the tires losing traction in a shallower situation, stand up and rock the quad back and forth, looking for something the tires can get ahold of for traction concentrating on keeping the momentum going forward. Wiggling the bars can also help the front wheels find more solid ground. Whenever you get into muddy ruts, rock the quad back and forth to keep the wheels driving.
If you do get stuck on your ATV in a mudhole, don't make it worse by spinning the tires and burying the ATV even deeper. Get a buddy with a winch kit to pull you out and sometimes you can throttle your way out of the mudhole by walking along side your ATV.
Mud can be a challenge and a great learning experience if you know the proper techniques for getting though it on your ATV.

How to Make Sure Your Child is Ready for ATV Riding
If you're thinking of purchasing an ATV for your child who is over the age of 6, you need to consider a few things before jumping in with your purchase.
ATVs are a huge amount of fun, but riding them is a big responsibility and you must be sure that your child is ready to handle that responsibility for their safety as well as the safety of others.
Children mature at different rates, your 10 yr old may be mature enough to handle riding an ATV and their 12 year old cousin may still lack the maturity and good judgment to do the same. You need to look objectively at your child and decide first if they are big enough to handle an ATV.
ATVs come in all sizes, for just about any size and body type. Make sure your child is physically ready and they can place both feet on the foot rests, reach the handlebars comfortably and easily reach the foot controls. Make sure your child can squeeze the hand controls and operate the shift lever and brakes with ease.
Your child also needs to be able to read and recognize what the various signs and trail markers mean. Make sure your child has peripheral vision and knows to be aware for other riders. Your child also needs to be able to judge the distance of objects from his or herself.
You need to further ascertain that your child is emotionally ready to ride an ATV. If your child is easily frustrated or upset and acts out accordingly, it is probably best to pass on an ATV at this time. If you child can keep their mind on driving their ATV safely and keeping an eye out for others, it's probably time to let them enjoy the freedom and fun an ATV offers.

Getting The Right Helmet For Off Roading
If you're going to ride an ATV, you need a helmet it is that simple. But buying a helmet, given the vast amount of choices out there today can be a daunting task for anyone.
You have already heard how a helmet is the number one piece of safety equipment to wear when you're riding your ATV and how a helmet not only protects your head, it makes for a safer ride by cutting down on noise from wind so you can actually hear other sounds more clearly.
Make sure you get a full face helmet that is DOT and/or Snell certified. Don't waste your time with helmets that are not certified, Additionally full face helmets do not replace the need for goggles but a full face helmet can save your from getting your face sprayed with debris and at the speeds an ATV can kick up debris, it can feel like pepper spray when it hits your face at high velocity.
Also, make sure that the helmet you choose to wear when riding your ATV is comfortable. It should have adequate padding and should fit snugly but not too tight around your head. A neck roll that hugs your neck is another good feature that most newer generation helmets have. Make sure the chin strap fastens well and the helmet stays in place. Shake your head a little bit to confirm this.
The more EPS your helmet has the better. The EPS is what actually absorbs the force of an impact so the more you have the more protected you are if and when an impact happens.
Make sure it's certified, make sure it has good fit and you'll be ready to ride your ATV safely and with a great helmet!

Types Of ATV Racing
After you've mastered riding your ATV, you might find yourself feeling a little bit competitive and if you feel the need for speed, you might want to consider racing your ATV.
Motocross races in two or more heats called "motos" and are usually held on closed courses that utilize the natural terrain and some man-made obstacles to keep the rider's on their toes. There are several classes of riders including 50cc for 4 to 8-year-olds on up to unlimited for riders 16 to over 50. This makes motocross an event the entire family can participate in. Points are earned in each moto based on finishing position of the rider and the rider that finishes with the best total score is the winner of the Motocross.
TT (Tourist Trophy)are held on prepared dirt tracks and have left and right turns as well as jumps. Most TTs have qualifying heats to determine who will qualify for the main event and starting position for the main race. The finishing position of the rider in the main event is the winner.
Short Track is a fun and fast dirt racing for your ATV. Short track races are run on ovals shaped out of dirt and are usually only 3/8 of a mile in length.
Cross Country & Hare Scrambles are rugged and rough races and not for the faint of heart. If you have good control over your ATV, this might be the challenge you're looking for. These races are on marked courses over rugged and natural terrain - these races last for hours.
Ice Racing is a fun sport for any ATVer that lives in the colder regions of the country. They are usually short ovals much like the TT races.
Now that you know the kinds of racing that are available to you to use your ATV, get out there and have a blast on your ATV!

Tennessee ATV Riding: Coal Creek OHV Area
The Coal Creek OHV area is a whopping 72,000 acres of off road fun to ride on your ATV that is located in Oliver Springs, Tennessee.
This property is privately owned by the Coal Creek Mining and Manufacturing Company (CCMMC). In an agreement that was hammered out with the owners of the CCMMC, the ATV riding trail system was opened around this area.
There are hundreds of offroaders at this spot every weekend enjoying the ATV/OHV trails. The trails are open to everyone and just about any type of vehicle. ATV's, motorcycles, Jeeps, buggies and many other forms of off roading are enjoyed each weekend.
The ATV trails range from many kinds of terrain from gravel roads to extreme mountainous terrain. There are easy trails for newer and inexperienced ATVers that include gravel roads and hard packed clay trails with few if any challenges.
Overall, most trails are rated "moderate" and include mud, small rocks and small hill climbs. The more "difficult" rated trails will include off cambers, tougher hill climbs, rocks, mud and should only be attempted by experienced ATV riders.
Currently, there are over 160+ miles of trails now open in the area. All ATV trails are marked with a trail number, degree of difficulty and vehicles allowed on the trail, so you know going into an ATV trail how difficult it is going to be for you. Some trails are restricted to ATV and Motorcycle use only.
The only regulation you should know before riding these ATV trails is to access the OHV area you are required to have a Land Use Permit. Each person entering the area, regardless of age or activity must possess a land use permit while using the OHV area and that is strictly enforced.

Successfully Climbing Hills On Your ATV
Now that you've mastered riding your ATV, and you can start and stop with ease. Next, comes the fun part - learning to climb hills.
This is the number one way people get hurt on ATVs, through improper techniques when climbing hills. Doing it the safe way will become second nature to you on your ATV once you learn the correct way to do it.
There are four basic keys to climbing hills and those are: momentum, throttle control, body positioning, and staying on the best line. Before you climb a hill on your ATV, take a minute and look at every line you can take to climb the hill. Choose the route that is the smoothest and that offers the best traction you can see.
Next approach the bottom of the hill with as much momentum as you can handle. You will probably want to be in a low drive for steeper climbs and if your ATV has a gear shifter, you might want to start in second or third and then downshift quickly before the revs have a chance to drop on you.
For the majority of your ride up a hill, you'll want to be in a crouched forward position with your weight over the handlebars. Let common sense be your guide, if your hill levels out too much or your rear wheels start slipping, lean back a bit to get more weight on your rear tires. Try to do this as quickly as possible so you don't lose your momentum.
If you feel as though you aren't going to be climb the hill safely or you feel you don't have enough momentum, turn around. The smartest course of action you can take is to never push your luck on an ATV. The best way out of a climb is to use the momentum you have and use it to go down the hill. If the hill doesn't have a safe place to turn your ATV around, you're going to have to slowly and carefully back yourself down the hill.

Advice On Trail Riding On Your ATV
ATV trail riding is a great way to spend an afternoon with your friends. Trail riding is a great way to promote camaraderie amongst your friends and it is not difficult but it does require that you use your common sense.
If the ATV trail says it is difficult and your experience riding ATVs isn't that high. Don't ride that trail. You won't want to learn those kind of handling skills on the fly. It's not a safe way to learn climbing and
Another consideration when trail riding on your ATV is respect for the environment. Don't do anything that will harm the terrain. Stay on the designated ATV trails and don't go trail blazing.
Crossing obstacles is a common occurrence on your ATV and to cross them you can almost always use the same technique. Approach them straight on and approach the obstacle very slowly. This holds true for downed trees as well as some stair step hill climbing. Give a little throttle and you should be fine, be careful not to give too much or you might cause your front end to jump up.
Always climb hills straight up and straight down, never at an angle. Your ATV can tumble with you on it if you go at an angle and it is not safe for you to traverse hills in this manner.
Other good practices include riding responsibly and if you find trash out on the trail, pick it up and pack it out. Even if it not yours. It will help maintain the trails for the next ATV rider.

Alcohol and ATVs Don't Mix
We all should all know from common sense that riding and operating your ATV while drinking is a very bad decision. Please do not drink and ride, as this makes you as an ATV lover look bad and can of course be a danger to you and anyone around you on your ATV excursions. As well, it sets a bad example for the kiddies who hope to have their own ATVs someday.
While riding an ATV can be dangerous, it doesn't have to be, so long as you balance the risks and pleasures involved. Fortunately, it's mostly a matter of common sense. Riding an ATV vehicle can be much more demanding than driving a car. You have to be in good physical and mental condition to ride safely. That is an added necessity for ATV riders.
Some key points for your ATV safety that may keep you from being in top condition include alcohol, drugs, and fatigue. They all effect the entire decision making process which is vital for safe ATV riding.
Drinking and riding can be fatal no matter what you are driving ATVs included. The Consumer Product Safety Commission studies show that 30% of all ATV riders killed in accidents had been drinking! That really gives ATV operators a bad name.
Alcohol sneaks up on you. Unlike other beverages, alcohol does not have to be digested. Within minutes, it is absorbed into your bloodstream and passed to your brain. It quickly causes a slowdown of your physical and mental reactions. Though you may perform more and more poorly, the alcohol makes you feel as if you are riding your ATV better and better. But that's just an alcohol induced falsity. You cannot and will not be able to operate your ATV safely. Never consume drugs or alcohol before or while your riding your ATV!

Are There New Federal Rules On ATVs Coming?
You have probably seen it happening over the last few years, your favorite ATV riding trails getting shut down, sometimes temporarily and sometimes for good, or you may have seen some stern regulations in place where you previously enjoyed riding your ATV. Most of this is due to irresponsible ATV riders tearing up ATV trails and invading and destroying private property.
Recently, a Federal panel has taken the first step toward issuing new rules related to ATVs, and that could mean changes in the where and the way you ride your machine, especially if you have riders under the age of 16 in your family.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rule making related to ATV safety on October 6, 2005 and that means to keep your eyes open for the issuance of new rules regarding ATVs.
This could be a very serious step for ATVers everywhere, The last time the commission seriously considered ATV safety, it banned three-wheeled ATVs. This time, the three-member CPSC has been considering a petition submitted by the Consumer Federation of America and other concerned groups that call for the CPSC to ban the sale of full-size ATVs for the use of children under the age of 16 years of age.
This potential move has been heartily opposed by ATVA Director and AMA/ATVA Legislative Affairs Specialist who had representatives testify in a commission hearing on this issue. Instead of a ban, more parental supervision was argued to be the key and although the panel may have the authority to regulate the sale of ATVs and related products, they do not have the authority to enforce how consumers use the products they purchase.

ATV Riding in Hahn's Peak, Colorado
Hahn's Peak Trail System is as close to ATV riding heaven as you're going to find on earth. There are impressive mountains, forests of aspen and pine, meadows and fields, lakes and streams to ford on your ATV.
Hahn's Peak is a great place to hit the trails on your ATV. This is one of the most scenic rides you'll have on your ATV, the view from Farwell Mountain is accessed by a winding ATV trail and then you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of Steamboat Lake which is surrounded with snow-capped mountains further out and tree covered mountains just surrounding the area.
Once you've ridden your ATV to the top of the mountain, you'll be see a lot of snow, no matter what time of year you are riding these ATV trails and if you look below, you will see a green, snowless meadow.
The Hahn's Peak Trail System also goes into Wyoming and if you're feeling up for it, you can visit two states on one ATV ride! The entire ATV trail system is just over 300 square miles, so you have a lot of area to cover on your ATV.
The ATV trails themselves are easy to navigate and well marked so even the newest and most inexperienced of ATVers will have a great time on these trails.
Please be aware that Colorado law requires that Colorado residents must register their ATVs with the Colorado Department of Parks and Outdoor Recreation prior to riding their ATVs in this area. If you're an out-of-towner who has come in to ride your ATV on these trails, you don't need to do anything if your ATV is registered in your home state, if you're not registered in your home state, you will be required to register as if you were a Colorado resident.

Be Responsible when Taking Your ATV Off Road
Being adventurous and having fun are trademarks of ATV riders. But hopefully safety and responsible ATV riding are a trademark too. You know it takes brains and skills to operate an ATV responsively and respectfully. It's not just a matter of turning the ignition key.
Part of the allure for ATV riders is the opportunity to ride off road but unless it's done responsibly ATV riding can be damaging to the environment. Plan and prepare a route that is safe and legal for ATV driving. Local agencies like the Forest Service, National Park Service, or Bureau of Land Management should have information on off road trails near you.
Stay on roads and trails that are designated for ATVs, you may be tempted to try other trails but there is usually a reason that ATVs are not allowed to be there. Never make your own shortcuts or trails. Private land should only be crossed with the owner's permission.
Always make sure to drive in the middle when on the trail. You'll avoid widening the trail with your ATV and destroying vegetation and foliage along the path.
If you come across obstacles such as fallen trees, logs etc. Make sure you drive over them with your ATV one wheel at a time to avoid disrupting any vegetation or the natural lay of the land. You don't want you and your ATV to disturb natures plans.
If you come across a stream or a creek and you cannot avoid crossing it, go very slowly at a ninety degree angle and definitely only where the ATV trail crosses the water.
Go slowly and carefully over any unfamiliar terrain with your ATV. Riding your ATV is all about off roading but you can still use caution and sense to make sure your ATV ride is fun and safe.

Winter ATV Riding - Preparing Your ATV
Before you ride your ATV in cold weather, you need to do a few extra things to make sure your ride is a safe and enjoyable one.
A few cold weather preparations will make sure all your cold weather days of riding are good ones. If you are going to ride your ATV, never ride alone. Make sure someone knows where you and a buddy are going to be riding as well. If you are stranded in the extreme temperatures that Winter tends to bring, time is of the essence in finding you.
Do a pre-ride check on your ATV. While this is always a good idea, in cold weather it is a necessity. Look over your ATV carefully, inspect the frame and be on the lookout for cracks or damage; clean and then grease electrical connections with dielectric grease; clean, then grease chassis lube points. Replace all fluids with lubricants and coolants appropriate for expected temperatures; lube control cables; cable lubrication helps avoid frozen, useless cables in the field. If you're going to be riding your ATV in the snow, reduce your air pressure a little bit to get a better footprint on the snow.
A good trick when you're riding the ATV trails is to hit your brake levers occasionally to prevent them from freezing up. Stop and check your ATV every so often and clear the snow and ice from around the CV and U joints. And because ice and snow are heavy, carry extra gas. Make sure that you carry extra water as you can become dehydrated quickly in cold temperatures.
Riding your ATV in the Winter can be a blast if you just do a little prep work in the beginning and you'll have a great time on your ATV.

Winter ATV Riding - Staying Safe By Preventing Frostbite and Hypothermia
Now that you know to dress in layers when you ride your ATV in the Winter. You should know the basics for avoiding frostbite and hypothermia, both of which can creep up on you and overtake you before you know it.
Hypothermia is a silent killer and claims more victims per year than wild animals, avalanches and lightning. Hypothermia has three basic tools it uses to get you under its spell and those are : cold, wind, and wetness.
If your clothing gets wet, change it immediately. Hypothermia works quickly because the high concentration of blood in your head makes it a major source of radiant heat loss. At 40 degrees, up to half of the body's heat can be lost through the head, and at 5 degrees that jumps up to 75%, so always wear a warm hat when your helmet is off to help maintain your body heat.
Wet clothing can cause you to lose body heat 200 times faster than dry clothing, remember that fact and if you get wet or sweaty. Stop as soon as possible and change into something dry. The few moments in the cold it takes to change may save your life. Once again the reason for wearing layers is made plain. If you keep your clothing in layers, a layer of heat is kept next to your body and you stay warmer. This is effective Wintertime dressing for riding your ATV.
Evaporation is another way that heat is lost. Again the key is dressing in layers and keeping your clothing next to your body dry. If you get sweaty, vent or change as quickly as you can so you can stop the loss of body heat.
The final source of heat loss is respiration from your breath. Make your heavy breathing a minimum and breath through your nose rather than your mouth whenever possible and you will be safer from frostbite and hypothermia when you ride your ATV in the Winter.

Winter ATV Riding - Storing Your ATV
If you're not going to be riding your ATV in the Winter, you need to store it but like any machine, it must be stored properly to insure it will be in good working order in the Spring.
One of the first things you want to do before storing your ATV for the Winter is to wash it. Give it a good, solid cleaning.
Next take the time to change the oil and the filter. Remember, new oil will not go bad from sitting in an engine all winter, it's old oil that will cause corrosion and eat away at your engine, so best to get it out of there. A fresh oil change before Winter storage will neutralize the acids in the engine and allow the engine to rest peacefully until the Spring when you're ready to ride again.
After changing the oil, be sure to start your engine and let it run for a few minutes to run the new oil around inside the engine. Since you're only running your engine a few minutes, you wont contaminate the new oil.
If you plan on storing the ATV for the duration of the Winter, you will want to make sure that your carburetor has no fuel in it. If you don't drain the fuel tank of your ATV, at least turn off the fuel valve, this stops fuel from flowing into your carburetor. You will need to run the engine to get the fuel out of the carb but it only needs to run a few minutes. The engine will sag and will go low as the fuel runs out. If you don't drain the fuel before storage your carb will develop a varnish in the ports that is almost impossible to clean out.
Lastly, clean and lube everything that moves. If it is going to be in storage you want it well oiled so it won't dry out and freeze up during the winter storage.
These simple steps will insure you have a well running ATV when you're ready to jump back on in the Spring.

Winter ATV Riding - The Right Clothing
The best thing about ATVing is that it is a sport you can do anytime of the year, but you must dress for the climate in which you are riding. If you are going to be riding in a hot climate, dress accordingly and if you're going to be riding in a colder climate and especially during Winter, dress appropriately.
There are a lot of accessories you can add to your ATV to make it more Wintertime riding friendly such as handlebar mittens, heated seats, windshields, and more,
The main thing you want to concentrate on when you're riding your ATV in the Winter is stay warm and dry. Those two go hand in hand.
The best way to stay warm in cold weather is to layer your clothing. In a day, you may encounter a wide variety of ATV riding conditions and terrain. Layering is the smart way to meet all these circumstances. You will need heavier clothing for easy riding ATV trails and lighter, less constrictive clothing for harder to maneuver ATV trails.
If you break into a sweat, remove a layer of clothing so you don't get overheated. If you wear cold, wet clothing in sub-zero temperatures, it's going to make for a really bad day of ATVing for you. Thermal underwear is a big plus in this kind of weather. Make it the start for any day you're going to go riding your ATV in cold weather.
Be smart in your layering, make the first layer your thermal underwear. Make your next layer cotton to absorb any moisture. After that, use fleece, down or fiber-filled wool, etc., depending on the outside temperature and your personal preference.
After that, your standard ATV riding gear, boots, gloves, helmet and goggles will insure a great time will be had riding your ATV in the Winter.
