Wayne National Forest ATV Trails

When using the trails in the Wayne National Forest, be ready for some heavy duty riding. This place provides superb terrain for your ATV riding pleasure.

There have been many improvements on these trails. ATV's can do a lot of damage to the ground and these trails have interlocking blocks installed for the more eroded areas of trails to help stabilize the soil. The work done on these ATV trails has also made the curves safer to navigate and made the ATV trails safer to ride on overall.

Wayne National Forest has some regulations that must be followed when you're driving your ATV on these trails. You must possess a valid drivers license, you must have a current ATV registration prominently displayed on your ATV. If you are from out of town, you can purchase a temporary registration at the Forest Office.

There are three areas of the Wayne Forest for ATVing. There is the Hanging Rock Trail System, the Monday Creek Trail System, and the Pine Creek Trail System. All of the ATV trails are open from April to December of every year.
The trails are clearly marked for these ATV trails and going off trail on your ATV is strictly prohibited.

An unusual point about these ATV trails is they allow night riding if your ATV is properly equipped with working head lights and tail lights. The Forest Service also requires that you have a working spark arrestor installed on your ATV as well as a muffler prior to riding these ATV trails.

These ATV trails can be a blast, just come prepared for inclement weather as it can change rapidly, especially towards the end of the riding season in December.

West Texas Baja for ATV Riders

For a new experience specific for ATV riders, head down to West Texas Baja. West Texas Baja is home to two tracks designed for ATV practice and ATV fun.

There are several areas on both West Texas Baja tracks that are designed for practice or learning ATV riding techniques. There are several reasons ATVers would use these tracks. They could be new to ATV riding and want to polish their skills. They could also be competition ATVers looking for additional practice.

These trails provide that outlet for both types of riders. Sharp turns are abundant on both tracks. This allows ATV riders to experience just how sharply their ATV can actually corner. The tracks also have elevation changes. This means there are several hills that ATVers can practice climbing, or drop-offs where they can experience the speed of acceleration.

For those ATV riders looking for fun, the tracks provide this experience as well. Riders can bump along on rocky terrain with their ATV. This is where you separate the boys from the men and the girls from the women. The tracks also have water accumulation that ATVers can slosh through.

Another great feature only the most adventurous would enjoy is the dust kick-up. The trails are covered with dry dust that kicks-up and clouds when ATVing. This gives riders the illusion of trekking through the desert.

Since the tracks on West Texas Baja have an element of danger for ATV riders, they do try to throw in an element of safety. At the most critical turning points on each track, large hay bales are placed in case a fall should occur. The hay bales are intended to absorb the shock of the fall.

West Texas Baja is the perfect location for honing your ATV skills or just having a great time.

The ATV Area of Upper Tellico

The Upper Tellico area is full of what any ATVer is looking for rocky and rough with sections criss-crossed by tree roots. There are lots of very steep, slippery sections and the occasional mud hole.

This ATVer's dream is located in the Nantahala National Forest. It is a short drive from Murphy, North Carolina, in the southwestern part of the state where it meets Tennessee and Georgia.

The name Tellico, means "land of the midday sun." The Indians felt this describes the area due to it's deep mountain gorges and valleys that are fully illuminated, but only when the sun is directly overhead. When the USDA Forest Service took it over, they made it available to the public and here is where the ATV enthusiast can now run like the wind in the land of the midday sun.

There are more than 40 miles of ATV trails for you to ride on. It would be a definite challenge to try to ride entire network of ATV trails in one weekend. Different trails are for different levels of ATV experience and are clearly marked.

The harder trails are full of white knuckle moments. You will have to take some of these trails with a strong heart due to the sheer roughness of the terrain. There are a lot of rock and some scary drop off areas. Your ATV will be challenged by twists and turns, uphill and steep down hill. Don't attempt these trails unless you possess advanced ATV riding skills.

The other ATV trails are a little more mellow but have plenty of excitement as well. If you are a beginner ATVer, this would be the best area for you to start. It will give you plenty of thrills as it also has some great hills and some fairly steep inclines to hone your ATV navigation techniques.

Since this ATV trail does not allow you to camp at any point on the trail, it is best if you check out the several camping areas around the Nantahala National Forest, or if your idea of camping includes electricity and running water, there are several small hotels and B&Bs in the area that welcome ATV riders our for a weekend of fun in the land of the midday sun.

Ride Your ATV at Turkey Bay / Lake Between the Lakes

Turkey Bay or Land Between the Lakes, is a great place to go ATVing when you're looking for a little more than the average ATV ride, due to it's changing terrain and rugged slopes.

It is located in the neck between Kentucky Lake to the west and Lake Barkley to the east. The Southern entrance, located in Tennessee, brings you into the park on a road simply called "The Trace." If coming from the north toward Kentucky, you will find lots of side roads that lead to the lake access.

Turkey Bay was the first federally designated contained area for ATV riding. It is a 2500-acre paradise, full of history and wildlife. There is even a 700-acre nature station, where you can see red wolves, wild turkeys, eagles, and even a herd of bison and elk.

You are allowed to camp inside Turkey Bay as long as you possess the appropriate permits. One to three day permits are $15. After a wild day of ATVing, you can camp out at the water's edge. They also will supply you with a map that details the whole area ATV trails and all. The camping fees are various amounts, depending what you are looking for the basic camp site starts at $8 a night.

If you are a novice ATVer, there are great trails that are wider and more distinct and easy to follow. For the experienced ATV rider, you can venture off the main trails and challenge the hills and narrow tree filled areas as trailblazing is allowed. Please remember the standards set forth by Treadlightly if you choose to do this so the damage to the terrain is minimized.

This is a wonderful place to spend the weekend, or even the whole week with your friends and your mighty ATV's.

Things To Take When Overnight Camping On An ATV Trip

There is a lot of planning to do when you're thinking about making an overnight camping trip during your ATV ride and the things you take could make the difference of a good time or a bad one.

First, make sure your ATV is in tip-top shape and ready for the fun. Check everything on your vehicle including the oil, plugs and tires. Giving your ATV a pre-ride inspection is a great head's up for a good, carefree time.

Another important thing to take along is to be sure you have an adequate tool box and a good first aid kit.

Shelter and bedding are the basic priorities when camping. So, one of the first things to pack for your overnight ATV trip is the tent. You will want a tarp to protect all your gear from the elements. A good sleeping bag will serve your sleeping needs.

Now come the food essentials you will need for your overnight ATV trip. Water is a must to bring, along with food. A small cooler to put it all in and to protect it from nosy, hungry critters is a good idea. A portable mess kit that includes a small can opener and charcoal for getting a fire going.
You may also want to pack chuck box items such as salt and pepper, herbs and spices, cooking oil, paper towels, etc.

Cleanliness is important, even when camping out, so bring the basics like, your tooth brush and paste, wash rag, some towels, etc. You will need some cleaning items for keeping your camping area neat and tidy. Some of these items are a broom, some rags, dish pan, etc.

Clothes is next on the list of things to bring. Depending on the weather and the time of year, will determine which clothes you will want to take. Logic comes into play here, but do remember, boots and rain gear, and a laundry bag to put the dirty ones in.

Lastly, bring a bag to put your trash and other refuse in, remember if you bring it in with you on your ATV, bring it out and you will be doing your part to preserve the integrity of the wilderness.

The Benefits Of Adding Overnight Camping When Taking An ATV Trip

If you're planning on riding your ATV over a large network of trails, you will probably want to camp out overnight so you can get up early the next day and just continue the fun on your ATV.

Most trails allow camping off the ATV trails or have designated campsites at the very least. This allows you to ride the longer, more involved ATV trails and not have to hurry and try to be done riding by sunset. You can enjoy the ride with your buddies, pull over when you've had a day's worth of fun riding your ATVs.

Taking a long weekend to explore the trails is not only relaxing, it makes for a safer ATV ride. You aren't tired, you aren't rushed and you can take your time and really see the area you're riding and you won't have to hurry and be done or only go up a few miles on the ATV trails before having to loop around and come back as many ATV trails don't allow any riding after sundown, even if you have headlights on your ATV.

It also means you can have a great night with your friends after the ride and enjoy a meal by a campfire and make some great memories. A good rule of thumb if you're going to be camping is to follow the "Leave No Trace" standards and basically, if you bring it in, bring it out with you. There should be no trace of your campsite when you and your ATV buddies leave. This applies to campfires too, make sure after the fire is absolutely doused, to scatter the ashes and make sure there is no trace of your having been there.

If you've been thinking of doing something a little different with your buddies when you ride your ATVs, consider taking an extended weekend with your friends and it an overnight stay so you can hop on your ATVs the next day and continue the fun!

Riders must see the Terrapin ATV Trail

The Terrapin ATV trail has all that you are looking for when it comes to thrills and fun.

This particular trail is a part of a network of trails that loop together to form the South Pedlar ATV Trail System, which is in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. It is 0.6 miles in length and is full of the great things that all ATVers are looking for, rough terrain, twisting, curving roads, some wide and some narrow.

The view is what completes this trail. Stop and get off your ATV, look at what mother nature has done. Groves of large massive trees and meadows full of mountain laurel. It is truly a sight to behold, if you don't normally bring a camera on your ATV trips, try to make sure that you bring one along for this one.

These trails are open during hunting season, if you happen to be riding your ATV during that time, make sure to wear bright orange and make yourself known so you are not mistaken for a deer or other game. Some ATVers carry a whistle and periodically use it to let hunters know they are in the area.

The Terrapin ATV trail only allows 4-wheel ATV's on their trail systems and a DOT approved helmet must be worn at all times when riding on these trails. Because of the terrain, other ATV safety gear such as boots, goggles and gloves are a wise decision too.

Always do a complete pre-ride mechanical check on your ATV. The brakes are very important out there, also the Forest Service might do a surprise inspection of your vehicle, so keeping your ATV in tip-top shape is not only a good idea, it's a must in case of an inspection.

Safety, common sense and the right equipment will ensure a great time on your ATV on the Terrapin Trails.

Tellico ATV Trail System

The Tellico ATV Trail System has 12 fun and very challenging trails that are very popular with ATVers from all over the country.

To get to these ATV trails, if coming from Atlanta, take I-575 north and it will turn into Hwy 5, follow to North Carolina and follow the signs to Murphy. You will come to the business loop into downtown, follow that, then take a left onto Tennessee St. This turns into Joe Brown Rd. Continue to the blinking light and take a right onto Hanging Dog Rd. Stay on this all the way to Davis Creek Rd. Take a right on Davis Creek Rd. then this road will turn into gravel and eventually turn into Trail 1. You will be about 3-miles from the staging area.

This trail system has everything you are looking for in a fun ATV ride, very deep and steep areas, with lots of rocky sections to take your ATV up and over. The thrill of the ride is right here.

There is a creek crossing on one of the ATV trails, where camping out would be perfect. Just keep in mind, there are lots of rocky areas, and when wet, can become very slippery, if you aren't experienced navigating your ATV over slippery terrain, make sure you have someone experienced to show you the ropes of safe handling of your ATV.

Speaking of safety, make sure you do a complete pre-ride check on your ATV. The last thing you want is a mechanical break down of some kind. Make sure you take a simple tool kit with you as well- the smallest most insignificant screw or spark plug can save your day of ATV riding.

A helmet is required but don't forget your goggles, boots and gloves. You will be doing some hard holding of the grips. Keep safety, common sense, and alertness a part of your ATVing, and you are guaranteed to have an awesome time riding these ATV trails.

Angelina National Forest ATV Trails

Angelina National Forest is a fantastic location for an ATV excursion. Here you can take pleasure in all the sights and sounds a true forest has to offer.

Enjoy real ATV off-roading while traveling through the dense pine forests located in Zavalla, Texas. Bring your map and be prepared. Angelina National Forest is large and can be confusing without a map. The tall trees provide welcomed shade in the summer. Be prepared to take off your sunglasses. You won't need them.

ATV enthusiasts will love the open-area riding available at Angelina National Forest. Here ATVers can rev up their engines and charge full speed ahead with other ATV friends. Race your ATV or just feel the wind in your hair. It doesn't really matter. This open area allows high speeds for any reason.

When ATVing it is important to follow some simple safety guidelines. It is very important to wear a helmet at all times when riding your ATV. Uneven terrain can sometimes cause a rider to fall off their ATV. Helmets will protect your head if this happens. Also, be prepared for weather changes. Bring additional layers of clothing. Sudden drops in temperature can make a shaded forest quite frigid. Perhaps one of the most important ATV safety tips is to always ride with a friend. Angelina National Forest is no place for loners. You will prevent getting lost by bringing a friend. If you choose not to ride with a buddy, at the very least, let someone know where you are riding at all times. If something were to happen, they would know where to locate you.

Angelina National Forest is one of the most beautiful forests in Texas. Riding your ATV through the forest will be a breathtaking experience you will never forget.

Ride Your ATV At Grapevine Lake

Perfectly located in a Dallas metropolitan area, Grapevine Lake is a convenient destination for an ATV excursion.

Take it from the 2 million annual visitors, Grapevine Lake is a prime spot to bring your ATV. The terrain varies from extremely flat land to treacherous, rocky areas. The trails are well kept which provides for a safer ATV ride. Grapevine Lake trails are national recognized as some of the best ATVing trails in the country.

ATV enthusiasts agree that Texas, though abundant with wide open flat lands, does not have as many rocky areas to ride. Grapevine Lake can provide just that type of land to satisfy and ATVing appetite. ATV means all terrain vehicle. ATVs are some of the only vehicles that are able to cruise on this rocky ground. Take advantage of that here at Grapevine Lake.

Your whole family can enjoy an afternoon at Grapevine Lake. While you are off ATVing around the 7000 acre lake, your family can enjoy many other non-ATVing activities. Occupying children with these various activities can allow you to experience your ATV fun while they have a blast.

Grapevine Lake is located in one of the best areas in Texas. It is just minutes away from the Dallas Fort Worth airport. This means a last minute decision to go ATVing on a Sunday afternoon can be easily accomplished. Most ATV parks take hours to get to. This one takes minutes. That means minutes from food, minutes from a hospital, and minutes from home.

Grapevine Lake will provide your whole family with a variety fun activities while you enjoy the perfect ATVing experience close to your home.

The ATV trails of Richland Furnace State Forest will be a run on your ATV worth riding. These ATV trails are located in northern Jackson County, off State route 327, right by the village of Byer.

This is a great place to ride your ATV with your buddies on the weekend. It is a wooded area and reflects the days gone by. There is lots of history in these woods, along with wonderful trails for you to escape on with your ATV.

Pike State Forest Offers Many ATV Trails

The Pike State Forest is comprised of over 11,960 acres and much of this land has been made into ATV trails.

This wonderful place is located on State Route 124, just west of the village of Latham. It offers 15 miles of trails to ATVers. It is open from April 1 through November 30, with the hours of 6 A.M. and 11 P.M. daily.

This will be a fun place to go ATVing. The trails wind through the hollows and ridge tops. You and your ATV will be challenged by the ride, but rewarded by the scenery and view. While you are ATVing, you might come across the Anderson Lake. This is a beautiful lake among the hills and trees and a great place to have lunch or even do some fishing (just make sure you have your fishing permit handy - they do check).

All trails for ATVing are marked and the regular speed limit is 30 mph, if not, signs will be posted. No parking of the ATV so as to block the trail or obstruct it in any way is allowed. If you stop your ATV, be sure to pull it off the trail.

One thing you must keep in mind, the forest is open for hunting too. Always check to see if it is hunting season in this area before you ride your ATV on any trails. If it is, make sure you are wearing bright orange. The hunters must be able to tell you apart from the animals they are hunting. A whistle also helps, in case you are off your ATV or simply stopped. A cell phone is good to have in case of an emergency and a first aid kit would be a could idea also to take along on your ATV ride.

Piney ATV Trail

Piney Trail is a great place to go ATVing with all your friends. It is about 0.9 miles in length and is a part of a network of looping trails that span over 19 miles of land in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.

It is all of the same system of trails that are a part of the South Pedlar ATV Trail. It is not only open to ATVers like yourself, but to other OHV vehicles as well as hikers and horseback riders.

There are lots of challenges for you to partake in on this ATV trail. There is twisting, curving, narrow, and steep areas on this trail. Only 4-wheel ATVs are permitted on this trail, 3-wheelers are not allowed. Although the trail is rated as difficult, this trail system gets a surprising amount of ATV traffic.

Due to changeable weather conditions, this particular trail is closed between December 25 through April 1. In this part of the forest, the weather is very unpredictable. Bring extra clothing in case you get stranded or the weather suddenly turns while you are riding your ATV, the conditions can change amazingly fast. Snow can make the trails very slippery and is a possibility during the opening and towards the close of the ATV riding season.

The ATV trial is clearly marked and althought the terrain would be considered on the difficult scale, the easy marking of the trails makes it easy enough even a beginner could follow the trail system. If you are a newer ATV rider, be sure to have an experienced ATV rider along with you when you come to terrain you haven't navigated before. You can learn proper handling techniques to keep your ATV ride a safe one!

ATV Riders Should See Patterson OHV Trail

The reason all ATVers should try the Patterson OHV Trail is because it is the most exciting trail for you to ride. It covers over 15 miles, containing all sorts of challenges, no matter what your ATV riding skill level.

This trail is located in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests and is about 15 miles in length. It is open from dawn till dusk during the following months, June 16 - September 30 and December 8 - March 15.

To get to this trail, follow the trailhead facility, head north from Roanoke via Route 220. Just past Eagle Rock, turn left onto Route 615 at the Roaring Run Sign. Drive about 1.5 miles, then turn left onto Route 685. After crossing Craig Creek, take a left at the fork in the road onto Route 818. Keep going about 4 miles then turn left onto FDR 5020 (known locally as the O&I Road). Proceed about 3 miles to trailhead parking on the left. There is no fee for using or parking at this site.

During this 15-mile trail, you will encounter steep inclines to take on in your ATV, deep valleys and even some water to cross. Otter ATV Trail

Otter Trail is the perfect place to go ATVing. This is just one of the trails in the vast forests of Washington and Jefferson National Forests.
As with all National Forests, make sure you have your ATV permit displayed in a clearly visible location and also make sure that you have your spark arrestor and muffler installed prior to riding these lands.

Otter ATV trail is part of a looping network all connected by 19 miles of trails designed specifically for ATVers. There are other types of traffic on these trails as well, including hikers, mountain bikers and motorcycle riders.

If you happen to be riding your ATV in the early morning or early evening hours, your chances of seeing some of the local wildlife citizens is high.

Hunting is permitted in these areas, so before venturing out, make sure you check to see what time of year it is, as far as this sport is concerned. If you decide to ride your ATV during this time, for your protection, wear the color orange and carry a whistle with you.

Otter ATV trail is an easy trail system to navigate on your ATV and is a great area for letting newer ATV users ride and hone their technical skills for navigating their ATVs. There are few hills and no really steep inclines so newer ATV riders can concentrate on proper handling of their ATVs which will build their confidence and a confident driver is a safer driver.

Additionally, Otter ATV trails are clearly marked and easy for a beginning ATV rider to follow, as with all National Forest managed lands, help preserve them by following the standards set forth by Treadlightly and help keep your favorite ATV trails open and ready for riding!

Perry State Forest Is Pure ATV Riding Pleasure

The sport of ATVing is at its highest when you try it at Perry State Forest. This is a wonderful place that offers ATVers 16 miles of rugged acres for your ATV riding pleasure.

Perry State Forest which consists of 4,567 difficult acres, is located off of State Route 345, 4 miles north of New Lexington. It is open for ATVing from April 1 through November 30.

Snow is a possibility on these trails during the opening and ending of the season, it can be slippery and rough to navigate of you're inexperienced in doing so. Exercise the utmost of care when navigating your ATV over this terrain.

This is a place that used to be used for strip mining, so the terrain is rough and rugged, just how any ATVer would like it. There are many challenges on these trails, so the thrill of the ride is going to depend on your experience on an ATV. If you are a beginning ATV rider or you don't have much experience riding your ATV over rougher terrain, make sure you have an experienced ATVer with you for this trail ride.

As in the other Forests in Ohio, hunting season is open in these areas. If you decide to go ATVing during these times, you must remember to wear the color orange and carry a whistle with you. You have to let the hunters know that you are a human and not a deer or something else that they might be hunting at the time.

ATVing is a sport in which safety is the key to having an ok run or a fantastic one. Use common sense and stay alert. There will be others out and about, so always be on the look out for the other guy and you will have a great ride on your ATV everytime.

Why is it Important to Leave No Trace When Out in the Wilderness?

The quality of the wildlife and their habitat is the main reason for not leaving a trace after being out in the wilderness. The wetlands also have a stake in the way we leave an area. Leaving no trace shows respect for what nature has given us. We should never take anything away from it.

Education is the key to leaning just what leaving no trace is all about. First, we educate ourselves, then others. Before you know it, the beautiful places we love to go to, will remain that way.

The solution is quite simple really, change your behavior through partnership, research and education, one person at a time.

There is a list of principles that everyone should follow so leave no trace can be affective.

Be prepared and always plan ahead.
Make sure the surfaces on which you are camping is durable.
Pick up and dispose of all of your garbage.
Don't take anything that you did not bring, leave nature to nature.
Try to make the area in which you had a fire less noticeable.
Respect all wildlife.
Show respect and consideration of all others.

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics believes that doing these simple things, our lands will remain just as beautiful and majestic as they have been. Leaving no trace is our way of leaving these wondrous lands for the next generations to come, to enjoy.

There are programs for kids and clubs for the adults where this kind of thing is being taught. ATV dealers can give you the name of these clubs in your area or go online.

Make a difference, make the changes, do your part, leave no trace.

The forests in Maumee State, consist of just over 3-acres, which border on three counties, Fulton, Henry, and Lucas. It is just south of Swanton on county road D.

The trails are open year round from sunrise to sunset. There are some rules in which all ATVers must follow.

You can only run your ATV in designated areas. There must be a highway license displayed clearly and visibly on the ATV. Make sure you have a copy of the registration, as the forest service does surprise inspections. Additionally, you must have proof of insurance and a current and valid driver's license to ride your ATV on these lands.

There are maximum speed limits set up, 5 miles in the parking lot, and 25 miles on the trails. All ATVers must wear a helmet and goggles. All ATVs that are driven on these lands must have mufflers and spark arrestors installed prior to the ride beginning. The ATV Trail of Lone Mountain

The Lone Mountain Trail is located in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests and is a great run for all you ATVers.

This trail is part of the South Pedlar ATV Trail System, that networks about 19 miles of looping trails. The directions for getting there is as follows - traveling from Buena Vista, follow U.S. Highway 501 south. Continue on U.S. 501 to the intersection with State Route 130 at the Snowden power plant on the James River. Continue on State Route 130 another mile to the junction of FDR 564 on your left. Turn left onto FDR 564 to the Rattlesnake Trailhead parking lot. Another 3/4 miles east on State Route 130, turn left onto FDR 319 to the Terrapin Trailhead parking lot and you're there and get ready for a great ATV ride!

This is a wonderful trail for ATVing. It gives you narrow and steep areas, as well as wide and down hill running. Look out for debris that might have fallen across the road and if you're riding your ATV in the early morning or early evening chances are, forest animals will be watching you. Other sport enthusiasts will use these trails as well, so take it slow and keep your attention focused on what's going on around you. It won't be uncommon to see other ATVers, mountain bikers, motocross riders, and hikers. The occasional horseback rider will be on these trails as well. If you happen to see a horse coming towards you, kill your engine and allow the horse to safely pass to avoid spooking the horse with your ATV.

This particular trail only allows 4-wheel ATV's, 3-wheels are not permitted.
These trails are marked well with orange diamonds and a reflective mountain symbol. Along with a map, you should have no problem maneuvering your ATV through these trails.

Also, keep in mind that Lone Mountain ATV Trail is closed from December 25 through April 1 due to the weather.

ATV Trails in Lee Ranger District

ATVing in the Lee Ranger District is a place you will want to go back to.
The reason? History - these trails are some of the same lands that George Washington surveyed in the 1700s. You can ATV on the same roads that Stonewall Jackson rode on.

For getting and finding your way, the best solution is with a map. There are several ways to obtain a map for your ATVing. One of the best is called the Massanutten & Great North Mountain. It is a well illustrated map that covers the entire area with all the information you will need for a great ride on your ATV. You have to remember, these trails are so vast and so very different from each other. Your experience level in riding your ATV and your how developed your handling skills are in the sport of ATVing will determine which trail to take.

Pack some food and water, with a fist aid kit as well. Cell phones are good, but keep in mind, they do not always work in the mountains.

These ATV trails are mostly fairly easy to navigate but have a few challenges and very steep inclines are various points along the way. If you are a newer ATV rider, definitely have someone more experienced along for the ride to show you proper techniques for taking on the steeper hills and inclines, to insure you learn proper handling of your ATV and you will avoid an accident through simply not knowing proper techniques for controlling your ATV.

The Lee Ranger District maintains a number of trails and asks that all ATVers uphold the standards put forth by Treadlightly to help preserve and protect their ATV trails for future riders.

Lasso ATV Trail

The Lasso Trail, which is part of the South Pedlar ATV Trail System, is designed for the recreational ATV rider.

Directions for getting there start in Lynchburg. Follow Route 130 toward the Blue Ridge Parkway. After crossing through the Blue Ridge Parkway underpass, to the right, is Forest Development Road. Turn right into the Rattlesnake Trailhead parking lot.

This trail was made for the ATVer and all the fun that goes with it. While ATVing here, you will find all the challenges, narrow and twisting trails, and wide and inviting ones. While on your ATV, stop and enjoy the scenery. The groves of large trees, or the spectacular mountain laurel blooms in season is fantastic. If you don't normally bring your camera on your ATV rides, this is one ride to start doing it on.

There are some rules, in which all ATVers must follow. Only Four-wheel ATV's are permitted, and you must follow all signs and regulations.

Designated trails are marked by orange diamonds with a reflective mountain symbol. They will be closed seasonally as weather conditions dictate, but usually from December 25 through April 1. This is not only to protect the trails, but the ATVer as well.

Your ATV must have good brakes, a muffler, and spark arrester. As an experienced ATVer already knows, a helmet must be worn during operation, and only one rider on the ATV at all times.

Always remember, safety is your first priority, in the sport of ATVing. Not only must you make sure the ATV is in running order, but you must make sure you have supplies in case something happens. Some food and water, with a first aid kit would be a good start. Always let someone know where you are and about when you will return. A cell phone may not work up in the mountains, so keep that in mind and always tell someone face to face where you are going and when you should return.

With safety and common sense, the sport of ATVing can and is a blast so have fun.

What Does Leave No Trace Camping Mean and How Can I do it?

Leave no trace behind means leaving an area the way it was when you got there. Showing no signs that you have ever been there is the way we all should treat our forests, wilderness, and our country.

You can do this by learning some basic principles when going camping. It is through education, that we all will learn how leaving no trace, will become a part of our camping and really, our every day lives.

Plan your trip carefully, by talking to the ranger. They will give you all the info you need for your camping stay. Learn the area in which you plan on staying by using maps and keep informed of all the weather information in that particular area.

When hiking, stay on the trails and walk in a single file, like when you were in school. This keeps everything, on each side of the trail, just as it was. Stay alert for any changes in the trail, such as rocks, sandy areas, mud or puddles of water.

Choose your camp site carefully. You want it to be at least 200 ft. from a water source and the trails. Your cooking area should be about 200 ft. from your sleeping area. The same with your food and toiletries.

Keep your garbage picked up at all times. Take the least amount of items that you leave you with garbage after use. If you see anything that does not belong, throw it away in a bag that you brought with you and take it out with you when you leave.

Find out all rules regarding fires, the ranger will know. Use the appropriate camp fire ring, fire pan, or build a mound fire and keep the fire small. Make sure it is completely out before you leave the ares. Use plenty of water and scatter the ashes. There should be little to no trace you were there.

Be courteous to others including the wildlife that live in the area. Keep a low profile and enjoy nature at it's best.

Gator Run ATV Park

For a chance to try out your ATV on all types of terrain, bring it over to Gator Run ATV Park. This park caters to everyone from dare-devil riders to stress relieving ATVers.

First we will discuss the features of Gator Run that every ATVer would enjoy, then slowly move on to the features only a select few could relish. The scenic, dry trails are some of the most beautiful in the state. Anyone from families, children, couples, and the most extreme ATV enthusiasts would enjoy them.

Next we move on to the terrains that cater to a slightly more adventurous breed of ATVers. Here ATVers can splash in the abundant creeks or slosh on the mud-covered trails. Be prepared to get a little dirty. These trails are not for all ATVers to enjoy, but most will.

Next is where we leave most people in the dust, and only the most extreme ATV enthusiasts last. Here hard core ATV riders can enjoy the Gator Bowl of Sand. If you have never ridden your ATV in sand, you are in for a treat. This is where you test its power. Hilly clay pits are available for those looking to get a little mud/clay on their tires. This is where ATVers need to use the most precautions. Clay can cause ATVs to slide. The combination of hills, plus slippery clay can equal danger if safe riding practices are not followed. This area is recommended for experienced ATVers only.

Gator Run ATV park can host a variety of ATV experiences for everyone. Each and every experience should be practiced with safety. ATVs are extremely fun, but can be dangerous if not ridden correctly. Be sure to keep ample distance between your ATV and your riding buddies. Also be sure to bring a cell phone in case of emergency.

Gator Run ATV park will provide hours of fun for anyone in all walks of life.

ATVing in George Washington and Jefferson National Forests

When ATVing in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, you are in for a very good time.

These forests are made up of about 1.8 million acres, that stretches over 350 miles. They go from as far north to the Kentucky border, to as far southwest to Virginia. All of this is managed by the forest service, which is an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture.

All of these trails have their own names with their own personality. Some of these trails are, the Massanutten Mountain and Elizabeth Furnace and the Edinburg Gap on the Lee Ranger District. The Reddish Knob and Flagpole Knob trails on the Dry River Ranger District, which is great for ATVing.

Stay on the trails. You have plenty of land in which to run your ATV, so don't trespass on private property or go trailblazing which simply isn't allowed.

Most importantly, if you plan on taking a ride on your ATV during the third Saturday in November through the first Sunday in December, remember, this is open hunting season. Make sure you have the right equipment, like wear the color orange, have a whistle, and make noises, so the hunters can hear you.

Cathy's Creek Motorcross Facility

Cathy's Creek Motorcross Facility is the one of the most breathtaking places you will ever see when riding your ATV.

This facility is located just five miles outside of Forest City, North Carolina. To get there from Asheville, take Hwy 221 south, go about 8 miles towards Rutherfordton, then take a left onto Hudlow Road. A mile or so after Hudlow Road crosses Hwy-64 turn right onto Whitesides Road at the caution light.

This facility has a real wilderness feel and the ATV trails are kept very natural and well maintained. You will find this is a very family-oriented place, that brings everyone together for lots of fun and good times riding their ATVs and other recreational activities.

Cathy's Creek has several areas that are great for the novice ATV rider to hone their skills and learn good navigation techniques on their ATVs. Safety is a big issue at this facility and no one is allowed to ride without a DOT approved helmet and basic safety equipment such as goggles and gloves.

The track is open every Sunday for practice with a cost of $10 a person or $15 a family. It is monitored very closely and watched for debris or excess dust.

Cathy's Creek was originally built by a couple for their son to practice his ATV driving on. Soon, their simple track expanded into a fun, family oriented place for all ages to enjoy motorcross and ATVing.

The course comes as a breath of fresh air in terms of its design. It is well suited for ATVs and offers nothing that would intimidate or endanger novice riders, while remaining plenty fast for the advanced ATV crowd. The track is plenty wide to allow passing on these one way ATV tracks. Check out Cathy's Creek and spend some quality time with people who love to ride their ATVs as much as you do.
