Challenge Your ATV RIding Skill At Mount Rosa Trail

In the South Central Region of Colorado is one of the smallest, yet most challenging ATV trails you will encounter. The Mount Rosa Trail while small in length, is a real test of your ATV skills.

It is a multi-use trail and you may see other ATV riders, motorcyclists, or mountain bikers, but since the trail has a high difficulty rating, its use is very light by all off road vehicle traffic.

The riding season for this ATV trail is June through September and although it is just over a mile in length, this ATV trail climbs to an elevation of 1,449 during your ATV ride.

The Mount Rosa ATV Trail climbs Mt. Rosa which stands at an elevation of 11,499- feet in just a little over one mile. Then follow Mount Rosa ATV Trail proper which will begin around Forest Development Road 381. On this ATV ride there are a serious of steep switchbacks which will take you from 10,000 feet to 10,900 feet. Follow the ATV trail to the left as it forks and walk the ridge line to the summit of Mount Rosa. The ATV trail may also be accessed from St. Mary's Falls Trail and may be used as a switcharound. There are steep switchbacks at the 6th mile that make this a challenging ATV trail. The round-trip mileage is 12 miles for this ATV trail.

As with most National Forest managed areas, some strict guidelines apply if you're going to ride your ATV in this area. You must be wearing a DOT approved helmet and you must have your ATV permit clearly displayed on your ATV at all times. They also require that you have a muffler and spark arrestor installed on your ATV to reduce noise pollution and fire hazards which are a possibility any time of year.

Riding Your ATV on Medano Pass Four-Wheel Drive Road

In the South Central region of Colorado, there is a lot of extremely difficult ATV trails. This is one of them. This ATV trail is located in the Rio Grande National Forest and the riding season is relatively short, from June to October and you are likely to see snow during the early and late parts of the riding season.

These are multi-use trails and your chances of encountering other traffic is possible along this 6 stretch mile of ATV road. This ATV road is open to hikers, horseback riders, hunters, motorcyclists, mountain bikers, and you will see the occasional fisherman on his way as you ride by on your ATV.

If you are not experienced in handling your ATV in rough terrain, do not attempt this ATV trail. This is a pleasant but very rough ATV ride and if getting through the Medano Creek drainage to the summit of Medano Pass, is beyond your ATV handling skills or you need assistance to get towed out of a too steep situation, be aware there is a minimum $50.00 towing charge.

If you want to camp out with your ATV, primitive campsites are available along the road. The Medano Pass Road leaves the Sand Dunes National Monument and the forest boundary and follows Medano Creek to the northeast. The road crosses the creek numerous times and it is difficult to cross with your ATV. An interesting site about one mile into your ATV ride is the Frenchman's Cabin, the late 1800 homestead of Ulus Herard.

Shortly after the drainage begins to get narrow with steep rocky slopes covered by Douglas fir, spruce/fir and aspen. Most of the ATV trail has decent vehicle clearance, the last .5 mile of the road is steep, at Medano Pass, you will get a big bonus on this ATV ride as the view of the San Luis Valley to the west is outstanding. The road continues northeast into the San Isabel National Forest and ends there. This is a difficult but great ATV ride!

There Is A Lot To Do On Your ATV At Miners Creek Trail

If you are looking for a fun day on your ATV, look no further than the Southwest Region of Colorado at the Miners Creek Trail.

Although these are multi-use trails and not only used by other ATV riders, you will also run into hikers, horseback riders, motorcycles. mountain bikers, and the occasional fisherman. The use on this ATV trail is very light and the difficulty rating is merely moderate and therefore this is a great ATV trail to bring newer riders or inexperienced ATV riders to let them have the opportunity to hone their maneuvering skills on their ATVs and gain confidence with steering techniques.

This ATV trail is 7 miles long and has some great fishing opportunities along the way. The opportunity to view elk is possible if your schedule your ATV ride in the early morning hours and late evenings. There are several good camping sites that are along this ATV trail, pull over and set up camp!

The ATV trail crosses Miners Creek several times in the first 2 miles of this ATV trail. Be very aware that crossing Miners Creek during the early summer can be dangerous due to runoff segment. Foot crossings can be dangerous during early summer runoff. This is a very scenic ATV trail, and if you look to the West you will see the view of the white chalk-like cliffs are present at the head of Miners Creek.

The ATV trail, although densely foliaged in some places, is well marked and signed so even inexperienced ATV riders should be able to follow the trail signs and keep you easily on the ATV excursion down Miners Creek Road. This ATV trail ends in an open meadow where it is easy to loop around.

McNassar Gulch ATV Riding Area

Located in South Central Colorado, McNassar Gulch ATV riding area is a great place for the experienced ATV riders who might have felt their riders were missing some challenges.

This is some very rough terrain to take in your ATV into. The McNassar Gulch is managed by the San Isabel National Forest and asks that you have your ATV permit prominently placed on your ATV where it is clearly visable at all times and that you have your spark arrestor/muffler in place.

Since these ATV trails are rated as difficult with a lot of steep road, do not attempt to ride these ATV trails alone and having a winch kit installed wouldn't be a bad idea either.

These are multi-use roads and other traffic including other ATV riders, four wheelers, horseback riders, motorcyclists, and mountain bikers are all likely sights along these ATV trails as your ride.

This ATV trail is only 1.5 miles long and has an elevation of less than 1,000 feet but it is extremely steep and rough. Riding McAllister Gulch/Hornsilver Mountain ATV Trail

The Mcallister Gulch/Hornsilver Mountain ATV Trail is located in Northwest Colorado and is one of the most difficult ATV trails you will ever navigate. This trail is open all year round, but only sees moderate use due to its difficulty rating. Although, many types of thrill seekers come to this area, not only other ATVers, but cross-country skiers, four wheelers, motorcycle riders and even the occasional person walking on snowshoes.

This ATV trail is managed by the Holy Cross Ranger District and they do require that you have your ATV permit displayed in a clearly visible location at all times and that you have your spark arrestor/muffler installed prior to your ATV trail ride. Since this is a very difficult ATV trail, be sure that you always ride with an experienced buddy and having a winch kit installed on your ATVs wouldn't be a bad idea either, just in case one of those steep grades turns out a lot more challenging than you anticipated.

McAllister Gulch is only about 10 miles long but it has some extremely difficult terrain and should not be attempted by anyone new to ATV riding or if your ATV riding experience is limited.

There is a very scenic 4WD road which climbs to a ridge top and you will see panoramic views of several mountain ranges, including: the Sawatch Range, Gore Range, Mount of the Holy Cross, Camp Hale, and Mount Elbert.

There are some historic sites you will see along your ATV ride such as old Warrens sawmill ruins just past the 8.5 miles mark into your ATV ride. The only truly difficult sections are a very steep rocky grade about 4 miles in to your ATV and again at some narrow places at the ridge top. This isn't the easiest ATV ride in Colorado but it really can't be matched for scenic views and fun places to view along the way!

Long Hollow Motorized (ATV) Trail

This ATV trail offers a little more challenge for your next ATV ride and is ideal for beginning ATV riders who have mastered the basic skills and are finding the ATV trails rated "easy" are just too easy.

This ATV trail has a length of about 5.5 miles and only climbs to about a 400-ft elevation. The trail is open to ATV riders, hikers, motorcyclists, mountain bikers, and snowmobile riders from Winter through the Spring.
This is a great venue for newer ATV riders to learn to handle their ATVs in snowy conditions and since the terrain isn't too steep and there are not a lot of challenges, confidence can be gained by learning good maneuvering skills on their ATVs in these conditions.

The ATV trail itself winds around and intersects with several other trails at various points throughout your ATV ride. The Trout Creek intersection forms a nice loop around if you're interested in heading off the Long Hollow Trail and looping back.

The trails are narrow and only allow passing for one ATV, a good rule of thumb is at turns and stops, make sure the ATV rider who is behind you catches up before you go forward and that way no one gets left behind on your ATV ride.

As with all Forest Service Managed lands, make sure you have your ATV permit displayed in a clearly visible area on your ATV and make sure that you have your muffler and spark arrestor properly installed before you ride. Additionally, the Forest Service asks that you adhere to the standards set forth by the organization, Treadlightly and leave no trace of your ATV ride. You should also stay on the designated ATV trails and do not go trailblazing.

La Garita Creek ATV Trail

If you are going to be in the South Central Colorado area, and you are looking for a challenging place to ride your ATV, The La Garita Creek Trail is a great place to ride!

La Garita Creek ATV Trail is part of the Rio Grande National Forest and is only 11 miles long. Because of this ATV trail's difficulty rating, it only gets moderate use, except during hunting season, and then during that short period of time, the traffic can be quite heavy. Be aware when you are riding your ATV that these are multi-use trails and your likelihood of encountering other ATV riders, foot traffic and horseback riders is very great.

The ATV riding season for La Garita is from Spring through Fall and be aware the probability of encountering snow in the early part of the ATV riding season is very good. Be sure and dress appropriately in layers as the higher elevations can become quite cold.

At the present, this ATV trail goes through private property. Be sure to ask permission of the property owners before you ride your ATV across their land. In the near future, plans are underway to relocate portions of this ATV trail around the privately owned land areas to eliminate this problem for ATV riders. The trail goes through many types of terrain ranging from very easy to navigate on your ATV to downright difficult.

As with all National Forest Trails. You are required to have your ATV permit displayed in a clearly visible place at all times, and for the safety of the forest lands, you must have a spark arrestor installed on your ATV. They also ask that you observe the standards set forth by Treadlightly to make sure these trails last for generations of ATV riders to come.

Have Fun With Your ATV At Lily Ponds Trails

Located in South Central Colorado is a very easy and fun ATV trail waiting for you to come explore! The Lily Ponds ATV trails are multi-use trails managed by the San Isabel National Forest service.

The ATV riding season is May through December and there are hikers, mountain bikers, motorcycle riders, and horseback riders on these trails. Ride your ATV defensively when you encounter these other types of traffic. In the early and certainly the later ATV driving seasons, you are likely to encounter snow, since these trails are so easy to maneuver, they are a good place for newer ATV riders or those inexperienced in driving in snow conditions can learn techniques and skills to safely handle this type of terrain with their ATVs.

This ATV trail is just over one mile in length and has an elevation of just over 700 feet. There are few obstacles and challenges so it's a great ride for the beginning ATVer.

If you are riding your ATV on these trails in the early morning or early evening hours, you are very likely to view a lot of local wildlife residents as you ride by on your ATV. Deer are especially prevalent in the area, as well as the smaller woodland creatures who will be peeking out at you.

Lily Ponds trail has several spots along the way to fish. If you brought your fishing gear and a fishing license on your ATV ride, pull over and catch a few! Interestingly enough, most of these ponds were created by beavers.
If you wish to add a little more scenery to your day, park your ATV at the end of the trail at Shore Pretty Overlook and hike up about 2 miles through beautiful aspen groves that wind around many more ponds, it's not passable by ATV, but a view definitely worth getting.

Ride Killpecker Trail On Your ATV

Riding your ATV at Killpecker Trail is a great time waiting to be had. Killpecker ATV Trail is located in the Front Range section of Colorado and is managed by the Roosevelt National Forest.

This ATV trail doesn't see a lot of use because of its out of the way location but for it's moderate challenges and fantastic Colorado scenary, this is a great ATV trail that you should definitely seek out.

Killpecker Trail is a multi-use trail and when it is used, you can expect to see other ATV riders, hikers, horseback riders, motorcycle riders and mountain bikers. The ATV riding season is open all year around and the trail is very short at only 3.3 miles long.

This ATV trail ascends upwards from the Deadman Road and winds up at Bald Mountain Jeep trail located at Middle Bald Mountain. Middle Bald is the second highest of the three Bald Peaks. The climb up the summit with your ATV is worth the scenic view from the summit.

The Roosevelt National Forest service requires that you have a muffler/spark arrestor installed on your ATV prior to riding in their managed land areas and you must have your ATV riding permit displayed clearly on your ATV at all times.
They also ask that you adhere to the standards set forth by the Treadlightly Organization to help conserve and protect the ATV trails for future generations of ATV riders.

This trail is a fantastic trail for beginners to learn to drive their ATVs in an ascending manner that is not too steep. Remember, never attempt new trails alone and always bring a more experienced ATV rider with you when you are navigating new ATV trails in case you run into a challenge you personally haven't mastered.

Enjoy your ride at Killpecker Trail on your ATV, it's out of the way but worth it!

Riding Your ATV On Italian Creek Road.

If you are going to be in the Aspen, Colorado area, bring your ATV and head out to Italian Creek Road.

The scenary is fantastic and the ATV riding is challenging at Italian Creek Road. The trail has some difficult sections, so newer ATV riders will want to make sure they have more seasoned ATV riders along for help navigating some portions of this ATV trail ride.

There is a large open area at the trailhead that is ideal for camping and then the ATV trail winds into a wooded section. Wearing long sleeves and even chest protection is a very good idea in this section and if you've even been slapped by a branch while riding your ATV in a heavily wooded area, you know what is meant by that.

While riding your ATV through the wooded sections of the Italian Creek trail you will come upon a gated area. Please adhere to the "leave it as you found it" rule. If you open the gate to cross through, close it when you are leaving. You should leave no trace of your ATV ride except happy memories!

You will notice a lot of white rocks as you ride your ATV on the trail, they are from glaciers that carved out the valley. The rocks were trapped in ice at the higher elevations and as the glaciers melted and cut in forming the valley, the rocks were dropped along the way.

You need to be aware after you pass through the gated area, you are riding your ATV in open range land and your likelihood of encountering cattle is very high. Observe basic safety rules when you do.

There are not a lot of challenges on this trail, but enough ups and downs to make the ride challenging for newer ATV riders and just a great scenic ride for the more seasoned ATV rider.

Are Chopper Pocket Bikes Safe?

Chopper Pocket Bikes are very popular and with good reason. They are good looking, light weight, very portable, and top out at about 45MPH.

These great bikes, while small in size, are powerful little machines. Being safe when riding your Chopper Pocket bike should be in the forefront of all Pocket bike riders and racers minds. Extra supervision should be given to younger Chopper Pocket bike riders and no matter if you race or just ride your Chopper Pocket bike, a pre-ride inspection will save you a lot of headaches and money. It costs a lot less to replace a little screw or a tighten a nut or bolt, than to have a loose piece ruin a larger component of a larger much more expensive piece on your Chopper Pocket bike. Plus, there is nothing worse than getting going on a day of fun riding and racing your Chopper Pocket Bike and being broken down or stranded due to some tiny mechanical failure that could have been avoided through some basic preventative maintenance of your Chopper Pocket Bike.

Riders of Chopper Pocket bikes should be a minimum of 12 yrs of age. If you are a parent who is considering purchasing a Chopper Pocket bike for a child under 12 be extremely careful and supervise your young rider at all times.

Chopper Pocket bikes should only be operated during daylight hours. Riding your Chopper Pocket bike at night is not safe as pedestrians and other vehicles just may not see you. Another safety factor with your Chopper Pocket bike, is knowing where to ride. You should always ride your Chopper Pocket bike on a smooth, hard surface. Never go off-roading on a Chopper Pocket bike.

Last but not least, always wear your safety gear, especially a DOT approved helmet! A safe ride on your Chopper Pocket bike will be a great ride!

Indian Creek Trail For ATV Riders

Indian Creek Trail is a great place to ride your ATV. This ATV trail is 15 miles long and is located in the South Central part of Colorado. This ATV trail is managed by the San Isabel National Forest service.

As the Indian Creek Trail is rated as easy to moderate for ATV riders, this is a great ATV trail to bring newer and inexperienced ATV riders to so they can learn to better maneuver their ATVs and gain more confidence in their driving skills.

The Indian Creek Trail is a multi-use ATV trail so be aware you will be sharing this trail during the riding season of May 15 through November 15 with all kinds of traffic from other ATV riders to hikers to motorcycle and mountain bikers.

The ATV trail follows the contours of the drainage areas and is little bit like riding your ATV up and down a gentle roller coaster. There is no real elevation gained and this makes this ATV trail great for beginners and the inexperienced ATV riders. Seasoned ATV riders will enjoy the easy ride, fun short hills and the beautiful scenary the area has to show you.

There is a scenic stop about half a mile up the ATV trail, stop and walk up the burn scar where the unique Limber/Bristlecone forest is re-growing up, you can look out over Cuchara valley and the ski area. If you are stopping your ATV ride to take in the scenic view during the early morning hours, you are almost certain to see some of the indigenous wildlife of the area.

On this ATV ride there are some southern exposure red rock formations that are interesting to view as you ride your ATV past, and there are some switchbacks. The ATV trail ends at Indian Creek Road.

What Kind Of Safety Gear Should I Use When Riding My ATV?

This is the number one question asked by new riders of ATVs. Sometimes it is because they are afraid of not "looking cool", other times it is because the ATV safety gear can seem heavy until you get used to it.

Helmets are the number one safety item you should be wearing if you are riding an ATV. Most states require that DOT approved helmets be worn when operating an ATV, it's just good sense. The long term effects of a head injury are too large a price to pay for not wearing a helmet.

Chest protection is an often overlooked item for new ATV riders. Getting slapped once in the chest by a branch that was bent forward by the rider in front of you will convince you that chest protection when riding your ATV is a very good idea.

Goggles are an underrated item. Many new ATV riders think their visor on their helmet does the same job as a pair of goggles, they couldn't be more wrong. Some people think goggles are an expensive item that an ATV rider doesn't need. When you weigh the cost of an emergency room visit to remove a piece of debris from your eye, versus the cost of a pair of goggles, the price is really quite small.

Long sleeves, long pants and gloves are another part of safety equipment for riding your ATV that you should not skimp on. Branches can slap and cut you, falls and spills sometimes happen, and you have to consider the other person may not be paying as much attention to their ATV driving as you are.

Those are just the very basics of safety equipment. If you are new to ATV riding, take in some lessons and learn all the techniques you can for handling your ATV. A safe ride is a good ride!

Hackett Gulch Loop ATV and 4WD Road

Hacket Gulch Loop ATV and 4WD Road is only 11.2 miles but it is most definitely not for the faint of heart or the inexperienced ATV rider. This ATV trail is some extremely difficult terrain and not the place for a new rider to try to learn to navigate their ATV over rough terrain. This ATV trail is part of the front range section of Pike National Forest and is managed by the South Park Rangers. The ATV riding season is only from December through March and be aware your likelihood of running into snow on these ATV trails is high.

This multi-use ATV trail doesn't get a lot of traffic due to its difficulty rating, but be aware you may run into other ATV riders, motorcycle riders, and snowmobilers.

If you're wondering why anyone would want to ride their ATV over 11.2 miles of extremely hard to navigate and rough terrain, in the months of December through March in Colorado, there is one answer : the beautiful canyon along the South Platte River and it's spectacular view. This area has not only some of the best scenary you'll ever see on an ATV excursion, but it also has camping and fishing. Be sure to err on the side of safety and dress warmly for this ATV trail ride.

The rock formations are enormous and difficult to navigate with your ATV, the canyon walls are heavily forested and the ATV trails become narrow in some places, but the ATV trails are clearly marked. As with all Forest Service managed ATV trails, make sure you have your permit clearly displayed, your muffler/spark arrestor attached, you're wearing your DOT helmet and always ride your ATV with a buddy, especially when the terrain is as challenging as Hackett Gulch.

ATVing on Hermosa Creek Trail In Colorado

If you are going to be visiting the Durango, Colorado area in the near future with your ATV, you should take a ride over to Hermose Creek Trail for a fun afternoon of riding the trails on your ATV!

This ATV trail is located in the Southwest region of Colorado and is maintained by the San Juan National Forest Service. The ATV riding season is from Late May to Early October and your chances of encountering snow is very probable. The use of these ATV trails is light and the difficulty rating is easy to moderate so this a fantastic trail for new riders to learn maneuvering and steering techniques with their ATVs, especially regarding descending trails. Seasoned ATV riders can just enjoy the scenic setting around the trails and a great ATV ride.

These trails only see moderate traffic but they are multi-use trails, be alert for other ATVers, hikers, horseback riders, motorcycle riders and mountain bikers.

This ATV trail is only 18 miles long and as it winds through the San Juan National Forest, you will be treated to lush over growth and if you are riding your ATV in the early morning or later in the evening, your chances of seeing the local wildlife residents of this area while you ride through on your ATV are great.

This trail is mostly downhill from north to south, the trail descends about 1,300-feet but ascends several hundred feet just south of the Dutch Creek area where there is a bridge to navigate your ATV over. Be wary of snow in the early and late riding seasons and dress appropriately. If you don't already have your ATV permit and muffler/spark arrestor, make sure you have those correctly applied and installed before you come ride this great trail and you are insured of a great time riding your ATV at the Hermosa Creek Trail!

Why Is It Important To Stay On Designated ATV Trails?

There are a number of reasons you should stay on designated ATV trails.

1) Safety is a big reason for keeping your ATV on designated trails when you're out riding your ATV. You don't know where the ATV trail goes, or the nuances of that particular area. If it isn't a designated ATV trail, it isn't mapped out and there could be unexpected gullies, mud bogs, drop offs or inclines.
Another big issue would be no one would know where you were on your ATV. You should always tell someone exactly where you would be riding your ATV, if you leave the designated path, how is anyone else to know that?

2) The eye of scrutiny by environmentalists, politicians and land managers is upon you when you ride your ATV. Treadlighty is an organization that was created to make some standards for ATV riders to help keep the land from eroding from ATV and OHV use. One of the standards is to not leave the designated ATV trails, and every so often map out and professionally create new ATV trails for recreational use so the old ATV trails will be allowed to reclaim themselves and that way there are always fresh, new ATV trails to explore.

3) Private property is another concern. Sometimes it is hard to tell where the ATV land use area ends and private property begins. Hence the need for designated ATV trails in these areas. Some people are really nice about letting ATVers ride on their land, others are less than congenial about even a wheel of an ATV touching their land. Designated trails eliminate this issue and let you have a good time riding your ATV and let the private land owner not worry about recreational vehicles on their land.

Those are three good reasons to keep in mind the next time you're riding your ATV and have an urge to leave the designated ATV trail.

Being Safe When Riding Your ATV

Whether you are about to ride your ATV for the first time or you've been riding ATVs for years, knowing or refreshing your memory on the basics of good safe ATV riding isn't a bad thing to do.

Some great tips for making your ATV ride a safe one include:

Always do a pre-ride inspection. Check tires, look for too much or too little air. Catching that loose bolt or missing something, or simply tightening a screw can mean the difference between a great time riding your ATV or waiting for someone to come tow you out of a bad situation.

Wear your safety gear. This can not be stressed enough. Debris flies, branches slap back and forth and sometimes other riders don't pay enough attention. Wear your safety gear and protect your body.

Wear a helmet. This can not be stressed enough. A helmet may literally be the difference between life and death in the unfortunate circumstance of an accident. Additionally, never use a helmet again after an impact or even a severe dropping. The integrity of the helmet has been compromised.

Ride the right size ATV for your body size and skill level. Kids under age 16 years should not be riding ATVs with engine size over 90cc and under age 12 should not be riding an ATV with an engine size 70cc or greater.

Always watch out for the other person. Riding your ATV defensively is one of the best techniques you can learn for being safe when riding your ATV. Never carry a passenger and always ride your ATV only on designated trails.

With just these few basic safety tips in place, your can count on your next ATV ride to be a safer one.

Riding An ATV On Half Moon Road

There is a lot of traffic on these ATV trails with not only other ATV riders, but also foot traffic in the form of hikers and campers. These ATV trails are only moderately difficult and are ideal for beginning ATV riders to get experience and hone their ATV maneuvering skills upon. There are clearly marked ATV trails so it is easy for even riders new to trail navigation to learn to keep up.

The first half of the ATV trail is passable by passenger car then after that the remaining ATV trail is rather rough and only ATVs and other vehicles made for this type of terrain will be able to go further. The 4WD section of the road is a gradual climb with a few steep pitches to navigate.
