Arkansas ATV Trails
ATVs are abundance in Arkansas, and you're lucky enough to live in this great State, you know that!
Fourche Mountain Trail is 26 miles in length, with loops providing for short or day-long trips. While some of the loop sections are designated easy which is great for beginning ATV riders, deeper along the trail, should be attempted by experienced ATV riders only. This trail is not maintained as you may be accustomed to. Additionally, this is a technically challenging trails and will not be suitable for ATV riders who prefer speed. Narrow tread and rocky conditions make riding difficult through the mixed forest, with steep areas and high vantage points. Make sure you have the most current map and plan and prepare before you take on these ATV trails.
Huckleberry Mountain Horse Trail has more than 30 miles of ATV trails all formed in loops for easy navigation. This is a great course for beginning ATV riders to hone their skills on.
Mill Creek Trail has over 25 miles of trails that have interior loops and short cut trails so you may adjust your ride length if you need a shorter ATV ride. These trails feature something for every ATV rider. Mountainous terrain, scenic views, hardwood forests, rock outcroppings and clear mountain streams, varies from easy to difficult and has one access point. Located in a remote area with no amenities or campgrounds. Remember,if you bring it in with you, it goes out with you.

Iowa ATV Trails
There are no National Forests in Iowa, but this great state features a lot of great riding for you and your ATV none the less. One of the best places to ride is Bluff Creek Park. This is a great example of a group effort. Grants combined with volunteers built this great ATV ridig area. Bluff Creek is owned and maintained by the Iowa Partners of the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council. This was a two year labor of love that became a reality for ATV riders everywhere in 1992.
This park is currently 300 acres of diverse and dense terrain with about 20 mileso trails. Yo will enjoy the challenges of twisting trails, the rolling hills thrown in to get you off your ATV seat! A perimeter trail that circles the entire area is designed for all skill levels of riders and will always bring you back to the large parking lot if you get turned around, which is perfect for beginning ATV riders. You will be sharing the trails with other ATV riders and motorcycles so be aware and drive defensively.
Currently the hours available to ride your ATV on the trails are dawn to dusk, and if you choose to stay overnight, there is primitive camping available. There are the most basic bathroom facilities but the Bluff Creek Park Service is currently in planning to build better bathroom and a shower facility.
Please be aware these trails may be closed after a heavy rain as riding on muddy trails seriously erodes them. There are no daily use fees for riding your ATV or camping fees but all ATV riders must display a valid Iowa OHV sticker. Out-of-state ATV riders can buy stickers from any outlet that sells Iowa hunting or fishing licenses or at the Wal-Mart in Oskaloosa.
ATV Riders under 18 must possess an OHV Safety Training Certificate and please note, riding double isn't allowed under any circumstances and helmets are required for all riders in all Iowa OHV parks.
If you are in the area for a long weekend and you have ridden all the trails to your heart's content, Lake Rathbun is only 35 miles away and has a smaller OHV area that is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and has various trails and interesting exploration awaiting you and your ATV.

ATV Trail Riding In Vermont and New Hampshire
New Hampshire with it's dense forests, offers a great amount of riding fun for you on your ATV. White Mountain National Forest offers the most bang for your buck with over 800,000 acres of land to explore. The trails are clearly marked and the usual Forestry Service rules for riding your ATV apply. You will be sharing the ATV trails with bikers, hikers, and other ATV riders and these are heavily traveled ATV trails. The Treadlightly standards are heavily in place, and the "Leave No Trace" program is very much in place here and even though there is a lot of ATV activity and other traffic, the trails are very well maintained.
Vermont offers up its Green Mountain National Forest for your ATV riding pleasure. There are several trails in this 821,000 acre space. The trails are well maintained and offer challenges for ATV riders of every skill level. Most of the trails are easy to moderate in navigation skill required to use the ATV trails, with the exception of the Ash Hill Trail which is very difficult and even experienced ATV riders will find it is a very challenging ride.
As you can see both the small States of New Hampshire and Vermont offer some big riding for you and your ATV.

How Can I Learn To Perform ATV Maintenance?
ATVs are a lot of fun, but they do need maintenance. Even if you know very little about ATVs, you should learn to do the basics yourself. A $3 filter beats the heck out of replacing a many hundreds of dollars part that failed due to damage from a clogged filter. It's just good sense, safety wise and wallet wise to do ATV maintenance.
If you take an ATV riding class, along with all the great tips and techniques that even an experienced ATV rider may not know, you will learn how to do a pre-ride inspection that will teach you to look over the main aspects of your ATV so you don't have to worry about it breaking down in the middle of a great time. During these classes, don't be timid about asking questions. If you're not sure about something, just ask. That is what the instructors are there for.
You will learn to check your brakes, brake pads, spark plugs, wheels and tire pressure, suspension, silencer - you'll want to repack it every so often. Make sure your brake cables are well lubed and a big pointer you'll learn in class is to have your tire sealant with you as it can save the day!
Find a class near you and take it. Even if you think you know all you can about ATVs, you're sure to learn at least one thing and knowledge equals safety!

ATV Trails In North Dakota
North Dakota has a lot of wide open spaces to ride your ATVs on, and many undeveloped places to explore. A great place to start off riding your ATV is at Garrison Dam Lake Sakakawea near Bismarck. This is a man made lake that as built to control flooding of the Missouri River. Expect a lot mud around these trails. There are rolling prairie areas for you to ride your ATV on split away by lush vegetation and narrow trails to explore. They do ask that you do not leave the trails and go "trailblazing" on your own and stick to the designated trails so controlled trail changes can happen from time to time to allow nature to reclaim the used trails periodically and establish new ATV trails so the land can be maintained as natural as possible. This trails are along the Lewis and Clark Route so be prepared for some challenging riding always make sure you have the most current map to keep up with any ATV trail changes that might have occurred.
Schnell Ranch Recreation Area is another great place to explore on your ATV. This area is a 2,000-acre native prairie and heavily wooded forest that has been set aside for outdoor recreation. You must have a spark arrester and sound muffler installed on your ATV or you risk a heavy fine. Please be aware you will be sharing these trails with not only other riders but hikers and bikers as well. There is a heavy wildlife population so be respectful of the environment as you ride your ATV and there will be a great ride in store for future generations of ATV riders to enjoy.

Finding ATV Trails in Alabama
Alabama has a lot of wild country to ride in and until the past few years it wasn't really organized. There has be a great push forward for ATV riders to get the positive image out for ATV riders and conserve and improve the land sources used to ATV riding.
In a joint effort with the U.S. Forest Service, a local Alabama ATV group led a coordinated effort to develop an off highway riding area in the Talladega National Forest. This is considered to be one of the best trail areas in the State.
Another great trail that is currently under construction is Minooka OHV Park. This park should be opened in the Fall of 2005, and will feature all the trails, dips and hills ATV riders in Alabama have come to know and love.
Legislation is just beginning in Alabama regarding ATV use, some closed minded folks are working to ban ALL ATV use, whether it is recreational or utility. Several ATV groups have been working together to show the positive things responsible ATV riders can accomplish like clean ups of common areas, continuing education classes, and improvement and management of ATV trails on State and Federal lands and through this effort they have made a huge difference in the general attitude of the public regarding ATVs. Highlighting ATV riding as a positive recreational activity is just one thing these great groups are doing to maintain the current riding trails and open new trails for your exploration in the future.

Why Do My ATV Goggles Fog Up and What Can I Do To Prevent It?
No goggles are completely fog proof, ATV or otherwise. If you see a goggle advertisement that states it is completely fog free at all times, well that's a great sentiment, but just not possible. Various different approaches to ATV goggles have been tried from the insertable type of lenses (not the best idea, as it exposes you lenses to outside forces and they can get scratched up easier). If your goggles are fogging up, it's because you are allowing warm moist air to get inside them. To keep you goggles fog free you need only keep them dry.
Make sure your goggles are sealed tightly against your face. Getting a good seal is the number one way to eliminate fogging of your goggles. Additionally, check out the Smith No-Fog cloth which will retard the fogging of your lenses if you wipe them down in a warm environment.
Don't put your goggles on while you are unloading your ATV or otherwise not riding. Putting on your goggles should be the last thing you do before you get on your ATV, keeping your goggles warm and dry until then will prevent fogging of your lenses.
Holding your breath while you put on your goggles works well too, breath carries moisture and moisture travels upward into your goggles causing fogging.
If you happen to stop on an ATV trail to look at your map or talk to your riding buddies, and your goggles start to fog up, you need to get air moving through them. Take them off and lightly dry them and put them back on and press down to create a seal up against your face. These tips should help make your next ATV riding excursion a little more fog free!

Where To Find ATV Trails In South Dakota
One of the best places to ride your ATV in South Dakota is The Black Hills which has hundreds of miles of primitive roads that are ideal for ATV or ORV riding.
Be aware that you'll be sharing these roads with other ATV riders, horseback riders, motorbikes, and hikers. So ride your ATV friendly and defensively.
All ATVs must be licensed and "street legal" in order to run on these trails. As on all National Forest System lands, the Black Hills National Forest requires that all ATVs and OHVs with gasoline-powered engines are equipped with United States Forest Service (U.S.F.S.)-approved working mufflers and spark arrestors. There are specific travel management areas set up, and they require that you stay on the designated ATV paths. The Black Hills National Forest encourages all motorized users to follow the Tread Lightly pledge:
Travel and recreate with minimum impact; Respect the environment and the rights of others; Educate yourself - plan and prepare before you go; Allow for future use of the outdoors, leave it better than you found it; Discover the rewards of responsible OHV recreation.
Oahe Dam Lake Oahe is a 230-mile long lake runs from Pierre, South Dakota to near Bismarck North Dakota, and the surrounding area is rich in historic sites: fort, trading posts, and Lewis and Clark campsites. The lush ATV trails offer a lot to see, always get a map as the trails are changed to allow land management of the area. Trails are clearly marked and they ask that all ATV riders stay on the designated trails only. Follow these few rules and you're in for a great ride in South Dakota.

Where Can I Find ATV Trails In Louisiana
Louisiana has a good share of ATV riding terrain, in fact some areas in Louisiana are so remote, having an ATV to navigate to a particular location is almost a necessity.
Atchafalaya Basin Floodway System offers up some fun ATV riding. Louisiana has a lot of low lands so you can expect to encounter a lot of mud on this 595,000 acre area. There is a lot of dense forest consisting mostly of hardwoods and cypress, and Louisiana is known for it's bayous. The trails are closed after heavy rains due to certain flooding but otherwise provide a great ATV ride.
The Kisatchie National Forest is the only national forest in the Pelican State. Kisatchie has over 100 miles of trails to ride your ATV on and over 40 developed recreation sites.
You will be sharing these narrow trails with other traffic from hikers to horseback riders so be aware and drive your ATV defensively. None of the trails present any great degrees of difficulty and are fantastic for beginning ATV riders to gain their confidence.
If you're looking for a family friendly place to ride your ATVs, You can't go wrong with Catahoula Recreation on Sicily Island. They have 320 acres of dips and sand hills. There is also a smooth 1000 foot sand drag, many mud pits, and family trails so the kids can ride their ATVs too under supervision.
Louisiana is truly ATV country.

Where To Find ATV Trails In Maryland and Delaware
Maryland and Delaware have a number of ATV riding areas. These ATV trails are located in lands managed by the State Forest and there are some rules to follow when riding on these lands such as always have your ATV permit displayed in a prominent place, have your muffler and spark arrestor installed and working properly, no double riding even on vehicle that can accommodate two people, and you must wear a DOT approved helmet at all times when operating your ATV. If you have all that in order, get ready for some great riding.
There are 4 State Forests in Maryland and they each have great trails, the Greenridge State Forest, The Pocomoke River State Forest, The Potomac State Forest and The Savage River State Forest. All four areas offer fantastic looping trails, hills and gullies to challenge your ATV skills, and streams to ford. The Department of Natural Resources that manages these trails asks that you follow the Treadlightly standards when riding your ATV in these areas to minimize impact. There are maps available for all ATV trails at the Ranger Stations and they are updated often. Don't use an outdated map, it's always best to spend a couple of bucks rather than to find you're on a trail ride and the way you thought you were going on your ATV is closed due to mud or some other reason. Also get a current map and plot out your ATV rides, it's the safest and best way to explore new regions.
Delaware has one main OHV area called Blue Diamond Park, it's heavily used by motorcyclists as well. Most ATV riding is done on private lands and with private clubs. There are no State or National Forests that allow ATV riding currently, although Land Management review is underway to develop areas of forest to allow for controlled and volunteer maintained ATV trails.

Tennesee ATV Trails
Tennesee offers up some of the best ATV trails in the country to ride your ATV on. The 640,000-acre Cherokee National Forest is a great example of this. The main ATV trail in his area is located in the scenic Hiwassee River Gorge. There are hills and gourges to navigate your ATV through. You will be riding around Hood Mountain Overlook and see the Hiwassee River running nearby. The trails are narrow with lots of loop arounds so even beginning ATV riders can feel confident about navigating these ATV trails.
Land Between the Lakes National Forest offers up their OHV area called Turkey Bay. There are over 100 miles of OHV trails that cover a variety of terrains. Primitive camping is available and encouraged as it's hard to cover all this great ATV riding in just one day. There is something for every skill level of ATV rider. Flat meadows, rolling hills, and rocky embankments await your next ATV ride. The ridge tops and valleys are beautiful and the trails themselves are very well maintained.
As with all National Forest OHV areas, please make sure to have your permit prominently displayed, always wear your DOT approved helmet when riding your vehicle, and never ride alone. There are current maps available in the Ranger's stations located throughout the forest.
143 Off-Road in Hurricane Mills offers up 2200 acres of ATV riding fun for the entire family. Flat lands, hills to navigate and even some mud to go through await you and your ATV. Seeking ATV Trails In Kentucky
If you're seeking places to ride your ATV in Kentucky. You are in luck!
One of the best places to ride your ATV is the Daniel Book National Forest. Over 635,000 acres and has an extensive network of trails and lakes and small streams to ford your ATV across.
Lake Barkley is another great area to ride your ATV. The foliage between the trails is dense making the trails very narrow but the trails are well worn and easy to follow. These are great trails for beginning ATVers to learn how to navigate and pick up maneuvering skills.
Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area is a 170,000 acre National Recreation Area nestled between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, created by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. Native wildlife is abundant and you're likely to see it on either side of you if you ride your ATV along the trails in the early morning or around dusk. All kinds of wildlife from elk to osprey to bobcats all call these woods home.
B&J's is a private off-road club located in Bowling Green, that offers daily riding or yearly membership. B&J's provides something for everyone with their mix of open fields to rock climbs.a perfect mix of off-road terrain from rock climbs to challenge and hone your ATV skills to open fields. South Carolina ATV Trails
South Carolina has a lot of lowland ATV riding but there areas with hills and dense foliage to make your ATV interesting. A small but great place to ride your ATV is the Blue OHV area with it's small hills and it's part of the Manchester State Forest area and has a lot of dirt and sand. The Green OHV trail is only 1.7 miles but it's a very challenging ATV ride with steep inclines and gullies.
The Red OHV trail is the largest of the three trails in this area, and this trail is medium in difficulty. A great place for beginning ATV riders to gain some experience and a place for experienced ATV riders to enjoy the ride.
Cedar Springs OHV trails are located within the Sumter National Forest, these trails are 11 miles of loops and there are connecting trails along the way. Lots of flatlands and mud for you to enjoy rolling you ATV through. These trails are closed after rainfall to protect the integrity of the trails. Also part of the Sumter National Forest are the Enoree trails. You will be sharing these ATV trails with motorcycle riders and it's mostly dirt and sand. This is a great area for beginners to hone their skills. As with all National Forest trails, observe the rules and make sure you have your permit, your muffler and spark arrestor, and always wear your DOT approved helmet.
TNT Motorsport Park is for both motorcycle and ATV enthusiasts. There are challenging 8 mile woods trail for experienced ATV riders. There is a 2.5 mile wooded trail for less-experienced ATV riders.

What Is Meant By "Tread Lightly" When Using An ATV?
ATV riders get a bad rap. A few bad apples who have a flagrant disregard for the integrity of the ATV trails, other people's private property, and basic common sense, like don't leave your trash strewn all over the woods, has led to some trails being closed to ATV riders.
In an effort to keep the ATV riding trails open and to show that most ATV owners are responsible folks who just like the thrill of the ride, a great Organization was formed to form a standard of conduct on off highway trails and roads.
Treadlightly advocates responsible ATV riding and such standards as :
- if you bring it in with you, bring it out.
- do not attempt to navigate your ATV across muddy trails
- try to cross rivers with your ATV at the narrowest point
- no trailblazing on your ATV.
- respect other's private property
They also advocate safety classes and other continuing education for ATV riders. The more education your are about your ATV and how it affects the environment, the better of an ATV rider you can be.
If you follow the standards set by Treadlightly, you will join the ranks of responsible ATV riders everywher and help preserve the trails and lands for generations to come to enjoy on their ATVs.

Where To Find ATV Trails In Mississippi
Mississippi has a lot of lowlands that are great for riding your ATV. There are some great trails available as well. Check out Red Creek Off Road it has some areas that are great for beginning ATV riders but it also has some trails that the seasoned ATV rider will love. There is rocky terrain, gravel, sand, mud, and steep inclines to challenge your handling skill. All this fun is situated on just 75 acres in Perkinston, Mississippi.
DeSoto National Forest has a number of ATV trails. Bethel, Rattlesnake Bay, and Tiger Creek all hold a good ATV ride. The trails are clearly marked and the Forest Service requires that you show a permit in a clearly visible place on your ATV, wear a DOT approved helmet, and have a spark arrestor and muffler on your ATV at all times when you are riding in this area.
Trace State Park Area Trails have a lot to offer in the way of a good ATV ride. There are hills, gullies, and a lot of narrow trails to wind through. The trailhead area is good for beginning ATV riders but it definitely gets more challenging the deeper you ride into the trail.
The Forest Service and Land Management asks that you adhere to the standards set forth by Treadlightly and leave no trace of your ATV ride except good memories of a good time!

Pennsylvania ATV Riding
Pennsylvania is beautiful country to ride your ATV within. When you register your ATV in Pennsylvania, the State puts part of that money in a fund that pays for the upkeep of the trails overseen by the Department of Conservation.
The Allegheny National Forest contains four trails that are relatively close together to ride your ATV on. They feature low hills, small stream crossings (make sure you have a buddy and a winch just in case), and some flat, rocky terrain.
Piney Mountain features some rougher terrain to ride your ATV on and is not for beginners, certain trails are closed throughout the year and during deer hunting season. Make sure the trails are open before you make the trip to ride your ATV.
Ray's Hill located in the Forest District's Buchanan State Forest is a challenging ride and not for beginning ATV riders.
Pennsylvania subscribes strongly to the standards put forth by Treadlightly for anyone wanting to ride on their State's ATV trails. Make sure you're a responsible ATV rider and respect not only other ATV riders but the forest and land as well. This will insure a great ride for you everytime now and in the future.

Where To Find ATV Trails In Illinois
The National Forest Service is currently developing ATV trails for people to ride their ATVs on, as no one is currently allowed to ride their ATVs on federal property . However, there are still some great places to ride your ATV in Illinois.
Having only been open for about 3 years, South Fork is fairly new as ATV riding areas go, but every year they have added something new to add to the enjoyment of your ATV ride and visit to their facility. The latest addition was to add modern bathrooms and showers and a large covered pavilion with picnic tables. There is also a full service concession stand that offers hot and cold snacks and soft drinks.
South Fork is a remarkable place to ride your ATV. They have over 400 acres. Originally, South Fork was only about 320 acres of riding area for ATV riders, however, the members put their hard work and dedication to responsible ATV riding, this place was granted an additional 116 acres for ATV riding trails to be established on. Speaking of trails, South Fork has something to offer every ATV riding style. If you're an ATV rider that loves trails, you will find over 20 miles of trails that have dense woods, mud bogs, open trails and hills to climb. All great places to hone your ATV control skills. Best of all, South fork offers free ATV Safety Institute classes if you have purchased a new ATV. You may even qualify for a cash incentive or free helmet.
Another family oriented ATV/OHV park is Fox Valley Off Road located in Wedron. They have trails and challenges for the entire family and even features a kiddie park where the younger set can ride their ATVs under supervision.
For some down and dirty fun in Illinois, check out The Cliffs Insane Terrain Off-Road Park in Marseilles. They feature a lot of wooded terrain, dips and hills, and a heck of a mud bog. Be prepared to go home dirty from that ATV ride!

Finding The Best ATV Trails In West Virginia
Did you ever hear of the Hatfield and McCoy feud? For over 100 years these two clans were at war in the Mountains. Now you can ride your ATV over the trails in this fabled area.
Hatfield-McCoy Trails are open to ATV riders in five different areas. There are hundreds of miles of rough terrain, rocky territory and steep inclines. None of these ATV trails are beginner friendly but they make for a great ATV ride for the more experienced ATV rider.
Allegheny Lodge is at the foot of the Allegheny Mountains in Mineral County. This facility has trails for beginners as well that ATV rider who wants more challenge in their ride. The trails are well maintained and the scenic mountain view is breathtaking and just alone worth the ride.
Moonshine Hill located in Delbarton is a family oriented place for ATV riders of all ages. The racing hill is a real challenge and it's definitely a place everyone should visit!

How Learning First Aid Can Help In The Case Of Emergency
An unfortunately fact of life is accidents happen. An unfortunately fact of ATV riding is sometimes accidents happen and many times you are in areas where help isn't readily accessible. Having a first aid kit on your ATV and knowing the basics of first aid can help you save someone's life in case of an accident requiring medical attention but help isn't readily available.
Learning first aid is very important in case you're ever placed in the position of being the emergency aid care giver for someone who has been injured. Most communities have classes, and the Red Cross offers one of the best first aid classes and usually it is free.
One of the biggest things to learn, is to quickly ascertain exactly how serious a situation is. Sometimes little cuts incurred on an ATV ride can bleed like crazy and look far worse than they actually are and if someone has been involved in an accident, they have the potential to have internal injuries you can not see and should not be moved.
Another important point to learn is if you're going to be in a long term care situation until help can arrive which is a reality when riding on wilderness trails, is that cleanliness of wounds is the main thing to concentrate on. You will learn in first aid classes that in the event you don't have access to sterile wound dressings; fresh unopened newspapers can be used as a temporary dressing.
You will also learn to put together your own first aid kit. If you haven't put together a first aid kit by yourself, here is a good starting list to get you off and ready:
- Get a small, sturdy box, preferably waterproof.
- You will need a few pairs of vinyl or latex gloves.
- CPR mask
- Bandages - get several different sizes and go for the self adhering type
- Dressings - get them a little larger than you might need,you can always cut them down
- Telfa pads, these are very helpful for wound dressings as they don't stick
- Surgipad dressing, a high absorbency dressing
- Roll of cloth tape - 1" is a good size
- Hibicleanse and iodine for cleaning wounds
- Tweezers and pins
- Tempa-dot is a good unbreakable, disposable thermometer
- Shears for cutting away clothing and cutting splints to size
- Pack a mirror as a signal device, also a whistle
This is enough to get you started. Do take a first aid class, even if you have taken one in the past. Aid skills should be updated periodically to insure you are always ready for an emergency. Being prepared is also part of having a good time riding your ATVs.

Michigan ATV Trails
Most people think concrete and cars when they think of Michigan, but Michigan has some fabulous ATV trails. Abrose Lake is a wonderful place for beginning ATV riders. The trail is a simple 9 mile loop that goes around the lake. There are not a lot of challenges and it's a great way for new riders to build confidence and learn good handling skills of their ATVs.
Bass Lake in Marqueete County has a lot of narrow trails and mud. Be advised a winch kit is a good item to have installed on your ATV for this ride. If you want a good challenge, you'll find it here with their steep inclines, hills, and winding trails. A great ATV ride!
Huron-Manistee National Forest has superb trails for ATV riders. Since these are Federal Lands, you must have a permit showing at all times, wear your DOT approved helmet (just plain good sense), and have a spark arrestor and muffler installed on your ATV. These trails are narrow and changed periodically to allow the forest to reclaim itself and new trails are opened. Be sure and get a map so you have the most current trails to follow. Going trailblazing is not allowed.
Ontonagon County Multi-Use Trails is the starting point to take on Bill Nicol's Trails. You really won't find more miles of ATV riding in the Midwest, than what you will find in and around Ontonagon County. Lots of challenging riding and designated areas for beginning ATV riders.
Ottawa National Forest is one of the most popular places to ride ATVs with something for everyone. The Forest Service rules apply just like at Huron-Manistee. Michigan has so much to offer you and your ATV for your next ride.

Riding ATV Trails In Utah
Utah features many, many ATV trails, so many in fact, it would be impossible to list them all here. But we're going to highlight a few of the best ATV trails to get your ride on.
In the Manti-La-Sal National Forest there are over 350 miles of ATV trails. Get a map and bring your GPS, these trails are winding and don't loop around in many areas, so getting your bearings lost is a possibility in these dense surroundings. This is a great ride for anyone that loves a lot of twists and turns and narrow pathways. You must wear a DOT approved helmet, and have a muffler and spark arrestor installed on your ATV to ride in this area, and bring a friend along for the ride, it's not only more fun with a buddy, it's good sense to never ride your ATV alone.
Beaver Creek Trail in the Uintah Mountains follows the creek and is a very challenging trail. Bring a buddy with a winch kit installed on their ATV as there are many opportunities to get stuck on the steep hills and in mud.
Bullion Canyon is a great place for beginning ATV riders. There are trails that wind through the aspen and pine forests and there is also a historical drive through Old Bullion City.
Burnt Hill Road is good for the beginning ATV rider who is ready for a little more challenge. This trail is mostly well maintained but there are a few spots of over growth and some steep grades where you can learn to use your low gear. Five Mile Pass is great for the experienced ATV rider. This riding area has many gullies and mines that are hard to see until you are literally right on top of them. You'll be sharing this popular spot with motorcyclists and mountain bikers so drive carefully.
Knolls OHV Area has over 35,000 acres of sand dunes, hills and mud flats. A great place for the beginner to learn ATV handling techniques on different terrains and just a great ride for the experienced ATV rider. Poison Spider Mesa is aptly named, this popular area in the Moab area has slick rock, sand and steep challenging grades but nothing low gear can't handle. A little something for every ATV rider awaits you in Utah!

Alaska ATV Trails
Alaska is truly untamed country and perfect for ATV trail riding. There are a number of great trails in Alaska ranging from easy to navigate to extremely difficult.
Lake My Am Trail in Kodiak has some challenging ATV riding and is definitely not for the beginners. It's been reported that there can be a lot of thick, soupy mud on these trails so be aware and use the "treadlightly" creed when riding these ATV trails.
Another great ATV ride can be found at Bird Creek. This ATV trail has a lot of twists and turns and has usable side trails off the main ATV trail path that were once used for both logging and seismic exploration camps. The elevation goes up to 500 feet and be aware you will be sharing these trails with both bikes as well as other ATV riders.
Chugach and Tongrass are both National Forest land that have some fantastic ATV trails. Chugach offers a lot of dense foliage and narrow trails. Get a current map from the Ranger's station before you ride as sometimes trails are changed to allow the vegetation to reclaim old trails so the Chugach Forest stays as natural as possible. If your ATV group is planning a ride in Chugach Forest, your ATV group will need to fill out this form stating the group size and nature of your activities. Tongrass National Forest has areas currently in development for ATV riding and it is currently not allowed in the Forest. However planning is underway for several areas to be developed that will allow you and your group to ride your ATVs and explore this lush, temperate forest.

ATV Riding Tips For First Timers
Before you even get on your ATV for the first time, make sure you have a DOT approved helmet, gloves, goggles, chest guard, and other safety gear. Don't skimp on safety, especially when you're learning to control and navigate your ATV. Most of it is common sense but other ATV navigation skills can only be learned by practice.
In "The ABCs of ATVing" by Bill Andrews, an experienced motorcycle rider, tells of his first ATV riding experience. "My thumb gooses the throttle on the ATV, breaking the rear wheels loose and sending dust and dirt flying behind me. The back of the machine slides to the right as I hang off the left side of the seat. With the ATV finally pointed the right way down the straightaway, I'm ready to go up a gear. I instinctively grab the clutch, as if it were a motorcycle, and attempt a click up with my foot. But instead, I nearly pitch myself over the handlebars. Nope, that's not a clutch in my left hand. It's the rear brake. Just one of the many lessons I learned while taking the ATV RiderCourse recently."
That person's experience should give you pause for thought about taking an ATV riding course. Even if you're an experienced motorcycle rider like this person was, you will need to re-learn many things in new ways to properly and safely use your ATV.
Learn where the clutch, brakes, accelorator are before riding for the first time. Never ride your ATV alone, especially when you're learning to ride, it's important to have someone with you; and never, ever ride without your safety gear.
ATVs are great fun and you can't beat them for getting around forested areas and flat lands, but always make safety number one and you will be assured of always having a good time on your ATV.

ATV Trails In Nebraska
Nebraska has a lot of untamed wilderness to explore on your ATV. There are some great trails and adventure awaiting at each one.
A good place to ride your ATV in Nebraska is the Arcadia Diversion Dam which is is on the Middle Loup River about 8.5 miles upstream from Arcadia, Nebraska. This is part of a project by the Army Corps of Engineers to divert water and minimize flooding. There are abundant trails which althouh worn from use, are not marked. A GPS would be a good idea on your ATV in this area, having a current map of the ATV trails at the very least. The site includes 777 land acres and 109 water acres and is home to pheasant, waterfowl, deer, dove, and squirrel. Be aware you have the potential to run into wildlife at any time during an ATV ride in this area.
Oglala National Grassland and Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest are both great locations to ride your ATVs however they do require that you have a bit more experience due to dips and potential riding hazards like mud. If you're going to ride in these areas make sure that you have a buddy with a working winch on his ATV along for the ride. Even with their challenges these two areas make for a great time riding your ATV.
Make sure to adhere to Nebraska's regulations for OHV vehicles and have your permit prominently displayed and your spark arrestor in place before you ride. And have a great time riding those Nebraska ATV trails.

Alaska ATV Clubs
Alaska is ATV country. With its harsh tundra terrain, this land is perfect for ATV ranging. There are some great ATV clubs in Alaska, and here is a short overview of these great groups.
An ATV group with a descriptive, yet truthful name is the 2 Broke 2 Play 4 Wheelers. This very active club looks for new trails to range as well as old trails to maintain. A very active Alaskan 4x4 club ranging from mild to wild in both ATV trails and rides. Also visit .
Arctic Off road located near Fairbanks, is another ATV group that is working hard to maintain the rights of ATV riders everywhere. This ATV club is a member of United Four Wheel Drive Association and Tread Lightly and is very active in fighting closure of public land usage. Arctic Off road believes public lands should be accessible to ATV riders who are responsible and uphold the standards set for by Treadlightly. All skill levels of ATV rider are welcomed by this club.
Alaska ATV Club was formed as a get together for folks who wanted to promote safety and fun while riding ATVs. This club sponsors continuing education of riders everywhere, has established a peer group that follows all rules and also Treadlightly standards on all rides to help preserve and maintain ATV trails everywhere through good ATV riding habits and also sponsors clean up efforts for heavily trafficked areas.
This group also works hard to help make ATV riders and the general public more aware of Alaska State laws concerning ATV use, and last but not least, they welcome everyone who upholds their same standards to join them in some enjoyable ATV riding!

ATV Trail Riding In Virginia
The State Tourism board says, "Virginia is for lovers", what they should really say is,"Virginia is for ATV lovers!"
Virginia is another ATV friendly State provided you get your ATV permit, wear a DOT approved helmet, and muffler/spark arrestor installed you're ready to go on practically any trail Virginia has to offer.
In the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest there is a great set up of two trails in the Lee Ranger District. These trails are narrow and densely wooded and offer a great ATV ride. The area is extremely well maintained and still has a natural feel. There is abundant wildlife in the area and you will see quite a lot of it if you ride your ATV in the early morning hours or at dusk.
In Rockbridge County is the Lone Mountain Trail. It's only 2 miles in length but this challenging trail is part of the larger South Pedlar ATV trails. The Lone Mountain Trail is a 2.0 mile ATV trail that is part of the South Pedlar ATV Trail System in Rockbridge County Virginia. The Piney Trail is also part of the South Pedlar ATV trail and features a looping network of trails the cover it's approximately 19 miles of terrain. This is a great area for beginning ATV riders to learn to navigate and follow loop arounds.

Finding Oklahoma ATV Trails
With its red dirt and many undeveloped areas, Oklahoma is a great place to be an ATV owner.
Broken Bow Located in SE Oklahoma on private land owned by Weyerhauser Timber Company features over 450,000 acres of many types of terrain for your ATV riding enjoyment. Everything from flat lands, to steep inclines to wooded areas are available for riding. This is a great place for beginning ATV riders to hone their technical and control skills. You must have a permit to ride, and for your convenience the trails are numbered and maps available for purchase where permits are sold. There is no designated trail head on these ATV trails.
Crossbar Ranch bills itself as the newest and largest off-road riding experience in the West. Located in the Arbuckel Mountains area in Ardmore, this great place offers not only some really fun trails to explore on your ATV but picnic and camping areas as well.
The Pear Orchard Motorcycle Use Area is on the northwest side of scenic Lake Murray. The trails around the lake are marked and easy for beginners to follow. The trails pass through grasslands, forest areas and will take your ATV through over 1,000 acres of rolling hills.
Little Sahara State Park is located in NW Oklahoma, just south of Waynoka. Now, this is a fun place to ride your ATV. There are over 1600 acres of sand dunes waiting for you and your ATV to conquer them. There are all the conveniences of home like electricity and full bathroom facilities including showers, so stay and while and conquer all the dunes.

Kansas ATV Trails
Kansas is a very ATV rider friendly state and it has some fun waiting for you on its many ATV trails. We're going to highlight a few great areas to check out. Nearly every lake in Kansas has an ATV trail around it.
John Redmond Reservoir has two favorite areas for ATV riders, which are the Otter Creek Off-road Vehicle Area and the Hickory Creek Trail. The Otter Creek ORV area is located at the west end of the dam and provides 140 acres of trails for dirt bikes and ATVs. The area is open from sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset. The Hickory Creek Trail is a multi-use trail for the hiker, horseback rider, and mountain biker, as well as ATV riders. Ride friendly since you're sharing the trails. The trail length is currently 11 miles but with the placement of two crossings on branches of Hickory Creek it is planned to double the length of the trail, as time and manpower allows. Bridges have washed out due to recent floods. Riders/hikers will have to ford the creek at suitable locations upstream. Follow Treadlighty standards when crossing streams to do as little damage to the terrain as possible.
Council Grove is another favorite amongst ATV riders with it's narrow trails and dense wooded terrain.
The Perry Lake ATV and Motorcycle Trail encompasses over 140 acres of easy to difficult terrain. Make sure to get a map and read and prepare for your ride as this is a twisting, turning trail. The US Army Corps of Engineers has the following rules in effect for the ride area:
- Ride area is open from dawn to dusk
- No riding outside of the ATV and Motorcycle Area
- Approved eye goggles and helmets are required
- Effective exhaust required
- Wheel width may not exceed 55 inches
- No double riding
Other great lakes with ATV trails are Kanopolis Lake, Milford Lake, and Pomona Lake. There is a lot of entertainment awaiting you and your ATV on the trails that Kansas has to offer.

Rhode Island and Massachusetts ATV Trails
Rhode Island and Massachusetts are small on size but big on ATV riding. There are numerous areas to ride your ATV in both States.
Until April 2005, the Savoy State Forest was a great place to ride your ATV in Massachusetts. At present it is closed. There is currently legislation being brought to have it reopened and maintained by volunteers to keep it in good shape and educate ATV riders on proper riding techniques to preserve the lands.
At present Pittsfield State Forest is open for all OHV and you will find a great time on their well marked trails. Certain areas are being closed off to allow the forest to reclaim itself so there are some new ATV trails in the area. Get a current map before you ride your ATV. Over 65 miles of lush trails to navigate your ATV through, and head up to the Northwest and see Balancing Rock. It's a 165 ton limestone boulder that is balanced upon bedrock.
Rhode Island currently has no State funded lands available for ATV riding but negotiations are in the works with the State to allow controlled ATV riding in designated areas. Private lands are the only places to currently ride your ATV in Rhode Island.
With new legislation in place in the near future, Rhode Island should offer some great riding areas.

Texas Motorized Trails Coalition
Texas Motorized Trails Coalition is a great group that takes ATV safety seriously and has not only the safety of its members at a high priority, they do great positive things for the land management of the trails they ride.
They also require mandatory safety equipment at all times for their ATV riders including DOT approved helmet required at all times, they won't even let you unload your ATV if you don't have helmets for all riders in your group. No double riding is allowed on ATV. They also require closed toe shoes, long pants, shirt, goggles, USF approved Spark Arresters & Noise Arresters. The ATV trails on their property are clearly marked with blue tape. Hot pink tape is for dirt bikes and orange tape means be on the lookout for other OHR traffic you'll be sharing the trails with.
The trails are also clearly rated for ATV riders of every skill level. The ratings are as follows: B=Beginner, M=Moderate, H=Hard, E=Extreme. Trail rating signs will designate type of user and rating that pertains to each group. Example: If there is an ATV with a "M" and a Dirt Bike with a "H", but no OHV then only ATV's and Dirt Bikes are allowed.
You check in by leaving your membership card at the front gate, be sure to pick it up when you leave or they will assume you're still someplace on a trail. This is a great place for beginning ATV riders to learn skills and expert riders to hone theirs.
