Kids ATV Safety Concerns
Kids love to ride ATVs that's a fact. Kids aren't always the most reliable for policing their safety, that's also a fact. ATVs can be a safe and fun activity for kids and adults alike if proper handling is learned and safety rules are followed.
Most ATV safety is common sense and it starts with proper attire. The National Children's Center on Rural and Agricultural Safety makes a great case for helmets with their report that lack of helmet use is the biggest cause of serious injuries among young ATV riders. That fact alone should help you instill in your young riders to always wear a helmet.
Protective body garments are a must as well. As kids grow, make sure their gear is well fitted and not worn. When dealing with safety equipment, this is no time to be frugal. Good quality, well made safety gear is worth the price when you consider the alternative.
You should also check out your local ATV clubs or ask your ATV dealer to refer you to someone in your area. Take ATV classes with your kids, even if you think you know everything there is to know about ATV safety, you're sure to learn a thing or two. ATV riding is great for kids and being safe will make the good times even better!

ATV Training in Arizona
Riding an ATV in Arizona is fun, it's alot of fun. If your kids are going to be riding ATVs in Arizona or you would like a little brushing up on tips and skills for handling your ATV, check out some ATV training courses in Arizona.
You will learn about safety equipment, and the importance of wearing it at all times when operating your ATV, local laws such as state motor vehicle laws apply to ATV riders on many Forest Service roads meaning your ATV must be registered and you must be licensed, other roads and trails are open to unlicensed recreational riders. You will also learn how to find safe places to ride, and environmental concerns. And here's some good news, if you bought your ATV after 1986, you could very well be eligible for free training. In training classes, you will also learn how to pick the proper ATV for both yourself and your children as recommended by the ATV Safety Institute and ATV manufacturers:
Under 70cc 6 years and older 70 - 90cc 12 years and older Over 90cc 16 years and older
The Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) issues two types of license plates for ATVs an "RV" and an "MC" plate. The RV plate indicates your ATV has been titled in the State of Arizona and is licensed for off road traveling, but you are restricted from traveling on roads or any road where your ATV would need to be considered "street legal".
If you are going to travel on public roads, you must obtain an MC plate which means your vehicle is street legal. Additionally, Arizona law requires either the "RV" or "MC" plate to be securely fastened in a clearly visible position to the rear of your ATV.

Should I Wear a Helmet Riding an ATV?
The answer to this question is a loud and clear,"YES!" Besides the fact it is probably a law all ATV riders must wear a helmet where you live, it's just good common sense. Let's look at the reasons why you should wear a helmet using the top three reasons people give for not wearing helmets.
"ATV helmets are costly." is the number one reason given by ATV riders for not wearing them.Given the cost of a hospital stay and the resulting recovery from a head injury, you should get the best helmet you can. Make sure the fit is good. You should have good visibility.Helmets can actually help you hear other sounds better by cutting down on the wind whipping across your ears as you ride. Additionally, a good full-face helmet is great protection against flying insects, and yes they do happen frequently when you're riding.By protecting your eyes from the wind and debris you will have visual clarity.Choose a brightly colored helmet. Other ATV riders and vehicles will be able to clearly see you and avoid your path.
"ATV helmets don't look cool." Given the variety of styles and colors helmets come in, the "not cool" issue just isn't an issue any more. They come in bright colors and many styles. There is literally an ATV helmet for everyone. "ATV helmets are too tight." A properly fitted helmet might seem tight as you put it on, because of the foam within the helmet that conforms to your head. If the helmet pulls on easily, it's too large for your head. A good helmet should fit snugly all around your head.
And last word of advice, don't use an old helmet. All helmets, ATV helmets included, are made of foams, glues, and resins that deteriorate with time. Most manufacturers recommend replacing your ATV helmets every 4-5 years.

Kids ATV Safety
Kazuma has a great line of ATVs for kids. ATVs can be a safe and fun activity for kids and adults alike if proper handling is learned and safety rules are followed. Most ATV safety is just plain old common sense. Such as younger children should never ride ATVs without adult supervision. Proper attire for riding an ATV is a must.
According to the National Children's Center on Rural and Agricultural Safety, lack of helmet use is the biggest cause of injuries among young ATV riders. So safety starts with a properly fitting helmet made for ATV use. Don't use a helmet for an adult on a child, they don't fit properly and can slip and obstruct vision or the weight of an adult helmet may prove cumbersome for the child. Chest protectors, which are often overlooked, are very important because they protect the upper body from tree limbs, rocks, and other debris that can be kicked up by your ATV. Gloves are necessary for a good grip, Quadrant boots are fantastic protection against water and debris. A jacket and long pants are needed to protect your arms and legs against engine and exhaust burns, also protect your legs against cuts, bruises and scratches by rocks and limbs. Goggles should be standard safety equipment for anyone riding an ATV.
In the last few years, ATV safety equipment has mostly lost its dry industrial look and now comes in so many colors and styles that your kids will love the fact they can look cool while being safe. Check out Kazuma's line of great safety gear for your kids.
Your community may offer ATV safety programs, you might consider taking a course with your kids. ATV safety is for everyone and you just might learn something!

What Size ATV Should My 12 Year Old Ride?
So, you want to get your 12 year old an ATV to ride, but you aren't sure what size to get. A good recommendation comes from the Consumer Product Safety Commission and they state a child of average stature between the ages of 12 to 16 should ride ATVs hat are between 70 and 90 cubic centimeters (cc) - a measurement that correlates with engine size. If you child is smaller than average in stature, get them an ATV that correlates to their smaller size. Ditto if you child is on the big side. No one knows your child better than you. Problems can arise when you allow your children to ride unsupervised or purchase an ATV too big or too small for your child to handle. Many states have adopted laws that require any child between the ages of 12-14 must ride with a licensed adult over the age if 18, even if the kids have taken the recommended ATV safety course.
When you purchase an ATV, make sure you purchase the necessary safety equipment that is necessary for a good and safe ride. This includes gloves and goggles. Sign your child up for safety classes. In many areas it is the law that anyone under 18 must take an accredited safety course.
One such example is a father in New Hampshire that allows his twin 14-year-old sons and his 12-year-old son do ride machines that are bigger than the Consumer Product Safety Council recommends. "But", he adds, "They've been riding for at least four years and are too big and experienced for the recommended size ATVs. However, the biggest machine they'll ride is 250 cc". Another mother said she fought the idea of her children learning to ride ATVs. Her husband had been riding for more than 20 years and after learning to ride herself, the bug to ride ATVs bit her too. She now allows her 12 year old to ride a size appropriate ATV with all safety gear, and her child understand to never, ever ride alone.
Most riders will agree, it's not difficult to operate an ATV, but all riders should know the trails they are riding on and follow basic safety rules. Such as no passengers, never ride alone, always wear your safety gear and alway be alert to what other riders are doing. Now that you know the basics for choosing an ATV for your 12 year old, a fantastic, safe time can be had by all!

Kids Quads ATVs
There are numerous quads (four wheeled ATVs) available for kids, you just need to narrow down how experienced the child is riding it, and exactly what you want in an ATV to make a good, safe choice that will make you both happy.
If your looking to purchase a quad for a first time rider. You should really look at the Kazuma KMX - 50cc. It has a very quiet engine at only 35 db which is equivalent to a soft whisper at a distance of two meters. A quieter engine means more safety for your child as they can hear other riders and other noises more clearly. Another feature of this ATV that makes it fantastic for first time riders is the governor (speed restrictor) that can be put turned on which cuts the maximum speed from 45-50 mph down to mph. This will lessen the chances of the ATV getting away from the rider while he or she is learning proper handling.
There is also an auto kill switch. You simply attach the cutoff attachment to the back of the ATV and if your child needs assistance and you need to turn off the engine immediately, simply pull the cord and it's done.
For a more experienced ride, a quad that promises a lot of fun for your child is the Yamoto 110cc ATV with a sleek raptor style and an electric starter system, this is a very entertaining ride. As with all Yamoto ATV bikes, this one comes with a speed limiter screw so you can adjust the speed to the safest maximum speed your child may travel when riding their ATV.
If you're in the market for a quad, make sure your child has up to date safety garments. Children grow quickly and sometimes outgrow their safety equipment, always make sure your child has proper fitting safety equipment from head to toe. Quads are a lot of fun and being safe makes it an ever better time.

Why ATV Goggles Are So Important
When you ride ATVs, you hear alot about safety. Safety in riding, safety in clothing. Helmets and gloves, but a lot of people overlook the importance of goggles when riding your ATV. Let's look at some reasons people give for not wearing goggles.
"I don't need goggles because i have a pull down visor on my ATV helmet". A lot of people think a full face helmet can take the place of goggles, they have obviously never experienced the sheer joy of trying to remove a splinter of wood from someone's eye who thought the very same thing. For the cost of a trip to an emergency room to remove debris from your eye (and have possibly damaged your eyesight), you could have bought many pairs of goggles.
"Goggles aren't comfortable". Goggles for ATV riding fit tightly. It's so that they don't slip and interfere with your vision. When you're riding your ATV, you want your goggles to stay exactly where you put them on your face. They should have a snug fit. You don't want to be driving over your favorite hill and have your goggles suddenly dangling around your chin.
"Goggles fog up and decrease my visibility even more". This used to be a very common complaint, nowadays, there are more anti-fog sprays and even handy foil wrapped wipes you can use on your goggles that stop the fogging up completely.
Goggles are an important part of making your ATV riding experience as safe as possible. Don't forget them!

Why ATV Gloves Are So Important
ATV Gloves and Safety On The Trail
Riding fast on uneven trails through rocks, sticks and mud can be the formula for injury. Helmets are a necessary piece of protective equipment no matter where you are driving and ATV. Eye protection is highly recommended along with helmets. Gloves would be wise to wear because you will be gripping the handlesand throttle tight. The gloves will help reduce any soreness from the tight grip.
ATV riders using their vehicle as a utility device will usually already be wearing long sleeve shirts and pants, but sport drivers need to do the same. The proper clothing attire is just as important as wearing protective gear.
ATVs are supposed to be driven through the rough, but some are not as rough as others. Know what type of riding you will be doing in order to get the right type of ATV. For racing through rough trails you will want good suspension. There are tons of trails for ATV'ing, so test it out on different terrains instead of buying your own, but you may become addicted.

Upon the course's completion, you will be issued an ATV course completion card which shall be considered a temporary operator permit until the permanent ATV operator permit is issued by the Department.

ATV Training In West Virginia
An unfortunate statistic with ATV riding in West Virginia shows West Virginia averaged 26 ATV related deaths per year from 2000 through 2004, the sad fact of this matter is that with proper training and understanding how vital good quality safety gear is, some of those deaths may have been prevented. More than 95% of crash victims were not wearing a helmet. 13% of those fatalities happened to passengers. ATVs,with their long narrow seats, look like they were all made to carry more than one person, this is not the case with many models. Check out your ATV's specifications to see if passengers are recommended or not. And sadly, nearly one third of all those accidents involved alcohol and/or drug use, which just should never be done when operating an ATV.
West Virginia has some fantastic training classes, and you will learn so much by attending. You need to know the laws of your State for operating your ATV, and you will pick up some great safety tips you may not have known. As of January 1, 2005, anyone under the age of 18 must have a certificate of completion for rider safety awareness issued by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.
In West Virginia it is the law that you can not drive your ATV on any interstate highway except by public safety personnel responding to emergencies or any road or highway with a center line unless you are crossing the road and can do so safely and quickly.Helmets are also the law and they must be age appropriate and meet current performance specifications. The penalties for allowing your children to operate ATVs without a helmet, have or be a passenger on an ATV are stiff. The penalties range from $50 fines and 10 hours community service to $200 fines and 20 hours of community service and Driving License suspension!
As you can see, safety training in West Virginia is not only a good idea, if you're under 18, it's the law!

Using Your ATV Around The House
Bet that title made your eyes sparkle. So now you're asking yourself, "How can I possibly use my ATV around my home?" The answer is "Lots of ways!"
Your ATV can be used for hauling firewood to and from the house. Have you thought about cleaning out your attic or basement space? You can use your ATV to get those heavier items to the curb for pick up. Let common sense be your guide, never overload your ATV, if you have to wonder if whatever you're hauling is too heavy, it probably is.
Some ATV's can fitted with a winch attachment that can be used to pull a myriad of things and aren't just limited to brush and logs. If you are lucky enough to have a pond or access to a larger body of water on your property, load up your fishing gear and take your ATV down to some part of your favorite fishing hole you've never used before.
An ATV is great if you have a lot of acerage to cover. You can use your ATV to zip around check your grounds, your fences (and you can use your ATV to haul out , and maybe even find a new trail or two to explore. Almost any ATV is good for around the home, but even around the house, remember to keep it safe.
Don't compromise your safety for even a second, it's just not worth it. We're serious about ATVs and we're serious about safety.

ATV Helmets And Proper Fit
No matter if you love to ride your ATV in mud, rain, sand, or just in dense off-road trails, you must have a properly fitted ATV Helmet.
Some people still opt for the open face helmets, although we don't recommend them. Accidents happen sometimes and on the rare occasion one occurs, you want your face as protected as possible. Full face helmets provide excellent protection. They come with a built in face shield and the moulding of the helmet extends over your chin and mouth for added protection.
Your helmet, no matter which type you choose, should be DOT and/or Snell certified and should fit snugly. It should be tight when you pull it on your head. As we've discussed in other articles, you don't want any room inside your helmet. You want your helmet as snug as possible so if an impact occurs your head won't slam against one side or the other inside your ATV helmet. When fitting children for ATV Helmets, make sure there is no wiggle room by shifting the helmet from side to side while the child holds their head as steady as possible.
You want a good seal around your ears, keeping the wind and noise out will actually improve your hearing of the sounds around you. When you're reading the boxes and specs on helmets it can be a little disheartening if you don't understand what EPS is. You will see those three letter repeatedly. Just remember EPS = foam type cushioning inside your ATV helmet. Therefore, the more EPS the better because the EPS is what actually absorbs the force of an impact.A proper fitting ATV helmet can improve your ride by improving your hearing and visibility, and when your ride is great experience, you will experience a great ride!

ATV Helmet: Why you should Wear One
In speaking of ATV helmets to wear one or not shouldn't even be a question. Unless you think things like recovering from head injuries, facial lacerations and perhaps even losing your life sound like a good time to you. Not to mention, there's a very good chance wearing a helmet while operating an ATV is probably State law where you live.
ATV Helmets can not only save your life, they will lessen the noise from the wind and when your hearing is better, your ride a lot safer. Additionally, a good full-face helmet is great protection against flying insects and other flying debris that gets kicked up when you ride. And let's face it, it's hard to steer your ATV when you have a bug on your face or dirt in your eyes. That wouldn't be considered very safe operation of your vehicle.
A lot of folks don't like to wear ATV helmets because they feel they are too tight. That's because they are supposed to feel tight. A properly fitted helmet conforms to your head, you don't want any wiggle room in there. If you did suffer an impact and there is room inside your helmet, your head will slam to one side and your brain will continue traveling inside your skull in the same direction with the same velocity. If this happens to you, you will most certainly have more than a headache. Hence, a good fitting ATV helmet will indeed feel tight when you first put it on but that is the brillance of its very design.
No matter how good, helmets wear out. You need to replace your helmet every 4-5 years as the glues, resins and other materials the helmets are made out of will deteriorate with time. Helmets are good for one impact only. If you have suffered an impact while wearing your helmet, and even if you don't see any cracks or damage, replace that helmet before you go riding again. It's integrity has been compromised and you shouldn't rely on it for safety. Helmets are a definite must for the ATV rider and they should always be worn. With so many styles and colors available these days, you're crazy NOT to wear a helmet!

ATV Gloves: Safety On The Trail
Safety on the trail is a must. Wearing ATV Gloves is a must as well. Your hands can get sweaty, dirty, muddy and otherwise conditions can occur that will cause you to lose your grip. ATV Gloves are specially designed to help you not only keep your grip but to cut down on soreness from holding your hands in a particular position for extended periods of time.
ATV gloves aren't the cumbersome, hard to handle items they once were. Modern materials and lightweight, yet super strong, poly foam materials and the addition of spandex in many makes of gloves, make them super flexible and more comfortable than ever.
Kids should also wear gloves. Some excellent designs for both boys and girls insure a good grip and that equals a safer ride. You want your kids to have a blast riding their ATVs but you want them to be absolutely safe while doing it.
Gloves should be replaced if they begin to look worn, if the rubber grips on the palms and/or fingertips begins to lose its grip, or any rips or tears happen. Safety starts with good gear in good shape and as with all your safety wear, you want to make sure your ATV gloves are in tip top shape to keep your hands on the throttle and keep your ride safe!

2 Wheels or 4 Wheels? ATV vs Dirt Bike: Cost Is A Factor
When you are looking for an adventure to get your adrenaline pumping, you may be asking yourself just how many wheels you need. The "2 wheels or 4 wheels (ATV vs Dirt Bike) debate, there's a lot of similarity between the two camps. Both sides of the 2 wheels or 4 wheels (ATV vs Dirt Bike) debate are looking for excitement and fun outside.
So if you are thinking about a foray into the outdoor adventure of off-highway vehicle (OHV) operations, cost can often be a major consideration when deciding which way to go.
One big difference in 2 wheels or 4 wheels, ATV vs Dirt Bike issue is cost. To buy a 2 wheel dirt bike new will usually run you about $3000 to $5000, depending on the model of the bike and the accessories. To buy a used bike in good, gently used condition will usually cost about $2000 to $3000.
On the other hand, new ATVs range from $5000 to $10,000, depending in the model and accessories you choose. You can buy decent used ATVs for about $3000 to $7000. Either way, whether you go new or used, buying an ATV is a much larger investment, so if you are only just starting to dabble in the OHV scene, it may behoove you to try out a dirt bike first to see if you enjoy the terrain. After all, if you don't like it, you can always sell the bike and the bike will depreciate less in value, which is also important to consider in the whole 2 wheels vs 4 wheels (ATV vs dirt bike) debate.

Why ATV Kill switches Are Important for Kids
ATV safety is a big issue these days, and there is good reason for it. The number of ATV accidents and even deaths is rising geometrically, as ATVs become more and more popular, and as more and more kid's ATVs become available on the used-vehicle market.
ATV safety for kids is just as important as for adults, maybe more important, simply because they haven't got the experience. The smaller and lighter build of a kid using an adult's ATV is a combination frought with peril.
Taking a closer look at why safety on ATVs is especially important for kids, one notices time and time again, especially, why ATV kill switches are important for kids. Along with a helmet that actually fits a growing head and seats itself snugly and the proper clothing, such as gloves that allow for a good grip and protective, heavy pants, jacket, long-sleeved shirt and boots, etc., a kill switch on a kid's ATV can be a real lifesaver.
Most ATV brands offer kill switches or kill switch options and throttle limiters nowadays. They can be installed after the purchase, too, by a dealer or parent. The growing concern and local ATV chapter mottos "keep children alive!" have forced the issue of why ATV kill switches are important for kids. There are tethered kill switches and remote control kill switches to choose from. These days there's no reason a parent should gloss over the obvious reasons why ATV kill switches are important.

Dirt Bike Safety: Save a Kid's Life
Did you know there are classes in dirt bike safety? Since trail biking, dirt bikes and ATVs have been getting so popular, and more and more new and used vehicles are available, dirt bike safety is getting a lot of attention. Accidents and even deaths have risen alarmingly, which fact also contributes to a new and intense interest in dirt bike safety.
The nature of the beast is also perilous, when you think about it. The approved trails are off road in out-of-the-way, virtually unpopulated areas where, if a rider gets in trouble, there may easily be no help available. All this makes one think twice about dirt bike safety, as it should.
Probably the best thing a parent can do is look around for dirt bike safety instruction before they hand their kid the key. You can find courses taught by professionals in street bike safety, dirt bike safety, and general rider training at all levels. It makes sense to trust a professional to teach your kid such basic yet vital skills as clutch control, stopping, turning, swerving, climbing, descending, traversing obstacles and braking. Advanced students learn and practice off-road and racing strategies in a fun environment that makes them actually want to do it right.
Dirt bike safety courses usually emphasize safety on the road, good protective gear use and compliance with local rules and regulations. Unless you as the parent have a lot of time and experience, a professional dirt bike safety course is the highly recommended course of action before you even consider letting your child hit the trails.

Father and Son Fun with Mini Choppers
Your kid sees how cool you look on your chopper, don't think he doesn't notice. And all he really wants is to be like you.
Getting him outfitted in a Mini Chopper that's just right for him is only half the fun. Check out the leather jackets, gloves, boots, accessories and the all-important helmet for kids, and you and your kid will both be hooked.
But the fun with Mini Choppers begins when you start investigating the machine itself. You've got Mini Choppers, Pocket bikes, Gas and Electric Scooters and more to look at. That sounds like a fun time all by itself!
Everybody loves the Mini Choppers that can be seen on race tracks and off-road alike. Mini Choppers are actually miniature motorcycles that sport tons of features such as front disk brakes, a rear drum brake and the same handlebar throttle and foot pedal your big machine has.
The fun with Mini Choppers saga continues when you go get the right helmet and boots, maybe even a jacket with "Life Free" emblazoned on the back. You'll teach him the stuff that you've picked up along the way about protective gear that lasts and looks good.
You'll find yourself out on the trails with him one day, too. And that's when the previous fun with Mini Choppers will start to pale by comparison. Nothing beats being alone with your son inside all that riot of beauty and wild things.
Nothing except the moment you get home and he says, "Thanks, Dad. That was really fun."

Uses of an ATV for Fishing
There's ice fishing, fly-fishing and river fishing, and the uses of an ATV for fishing are myriad. In fact, some people say that, for fly fishing, mud slinging, exploring and simple hanging out in nature, nothing beats many uses of an ATV.
Lately, however, the many uses of an ATV for fishing and hunting have gotten mired in a bad publicity rap. The folks that use their ATVs responsibly for fishing and hunting are coming up against instransigent land owners and public officials because of this. Probably, with time, the presently bumpy road of exploring, hunting and fishing using an ATV will smooth out as the public sees fewer problems and moves on to other, more immediate problems.
When weighing the uses of an ATV for fishing and hunting against possible problems with land owners and the more traditional hunter who stalks his prey and hauls it out of the wilds over his shoulders, consider these ideas:
Using an ATV for fishing and hunting makes your outing convenient, efficient and fun. And if it's your kid you are concerned about, you might remember how you felt at his age. Think about whether your kid might never even go out into nature at all without an ATV.
The correct uses of an ATV for fishing and hunting can make memories for the rider that will remain as crystal clear as the blue mountain lake he discovered for himself, or the blue sky above. So keep it safe, tread lightly and grab your keys and gear!
