ATVs, Youth and Safety

When it comes to youth size ATVs, safety is a prime consideration. For youth ages 12 to 16, choose a youth size ATV, somewhere between 50 cc and 90 cc. These smaller, youth size ATVs, also called mini-quads, are built for slower speeds than adult ATVs. (Devices that limit speed are equipped on all youth size ATVs; some are adjustable.) Another safety consideration regarding youth size ATVs is the lack of a front headlight. While eliminating headlights might not seem to make safety sense, regulators want to discourage riding at night, a more dangerous condition because of low visibility.

Notice how your youth sits in the seat of a child size ATV. If the knees are bent too much and the thighs are angled upward, the ATV is too small and it would be better and safer to purchase a youth size ATV. While standing on the footrests, the youth's rear end should clear the seat of the youth size ATV by approximately three inches. Have your youth grasp the handlebars of the youth size ATV. His/her fingers should meet, ensuring a good grip for steering the youth size ATV.

Consider though not only the age and size of the youth when purchasing a youth size ATV, but also physical capability and maturity. Preteen years often see youth pushing the boundaries of rules. When deciding whether or not to purchase a youth size ATV, consider the maturity of your youth. Youth size ATVs aren't toys. The youth should have enough cognitive judgment skills to make decisions, react to hazardous conditions and minimize risk.

With a youth size ATV, the proper training and good equipment (including a youth size ATV helmet), you can ensure that your youth rides and races safely.

When It Comes to ATVs, Play It Safe

The number of youth riding ATVs is increasing, and therefore so are the injuries from ATVs. Proper training plays a big part in youth ATV safety. Training classes for youth ATV safety are offered through the ATV Safety Institute, many times free of charge with a new youth ATV purchase.

The first factor in achieving youth ATV safety is to ensure that the youth ATV is the right size. Studies show that the large majority of youth who ride ATVs are riding vehicles meant for adults. An adult ATV can weigh 500-800 pounds, and control is lost when the machine is too big. The engine size for a safe youth ATV is between 50 cc and 90 cc.

A large factor in youth ATV safety is protective gear. Make sure to wear a helmet made for safe youth ATV riding (not a bicycle helmet) and one that meets standards set by the Department of Transportation. Other youth ATV safety gear are eye goggles to protect you from flying debris and protective clothing to protect you from scrapes and scratches.

One youth ATV safety tip is for youth under 16 to not carry passengers. Generally, ATVs are built for one rider. Carrying passengers increases instability; the rider can maintain better control of the ATV without passengers, increasing youth ATV safety.

ATVs were designed to go off-road. Therefore, proper youth ATV safety means staying off paved surfaces and roads to ensure proper handling.

For increased youth ATV safety, know your terrain and stay on established trails. If the terrain is unfamiliar, look ahead for obstacles, holes, and bumps. Choose lower speeds depending on the obstacles, visibility, and conditions.

You're Just My Type: Youth ATV Helmets

It seems to be common sense to say that wearing a helmet will decrease ATV injuries. However, studies show that one-third of riders never wear a helmet. Ensure your youth's safety by insisting on a youth ATV helmet as an indispensable part of his/her riding attire.

If your youth balks at wearing a youth ATV helmet, point out all the off-road racers who would never think of racing without one. Further, the variety of colors and patterns, including replicas of current racers, ensure finding a youth ATV helmet to meet your youth's tastes.

No matter how cool the youth ATV helmet looks, though, make sure it is Department of Transportation certified. For even more protection, buy a youth ATV helmet that meets Snell standards. Snell is a voluntary but more stringent helmet certification, based on equipment testing.

There are three types of youth ATV helmets: open face, full-face and off-road or Motocross. The open-face youth ATV helmet is generally what people start with. This youth ATV helmet covers the head but not the mouth or chin. And while it has a chinstrap, it's meant to keep the youth ATV helmet on rather than providing protection. The full-face youth ATV helmet has a built-in visor and the youth ATV helmet moulding extends over the mouth and chin. The youth ATV helmet offering the most protection is the off-road model. This youth ATV helmet is perfect for youth who plan on racing their ATVs. Its moulding also extends over the jaw. It is better ventilated, which means greater comfort but also better visibility as the visor won't fog up.

Before leaving the store with a youth ATV helmet, try it on to make sure it is a snug fit.

The Well-Equipped ATV Rider

After purchasing an ATV for your youth, finish the package with youth ATV equipment. Youth ATV equipment is concerned with safety. The first piece of youth ATV equipment should be a good, snug-fitting helmet. Make sure that the youth ATV helmet meets at least Department of Transportation standards.

Goggles are a must-have youth ATV equipment to protect the eyes. Sunglasses aren't proper youth ATV equipment as they don't provide enough protection against debris, but as part of your youth ATV equipment, you can purchase gray-tinted goggles to help block the sun. Be sure, though, that clear goggles are worn at night.

Youth ATV equipment includes attire. Long sleeve shirts and long pants as part of youth ATV equipment will decrease injuries such as scrapes and scratches. Boots as part of your youth ATV equipment will ensure that feet don't get injured. For a little more money for your youth ATV equipment, invest in a pair of off-road boots that cover the ankle. This youth ATV equipment will ensure that even if a foot slips off the footrest in front of a wheel, the damage will be minimal if any. Boots will also help protect against sprains in the event of a fall.

Another consideration in youth ATV equipment is the use of chest protectors and neck braces. Neck braces ensure that the helmet doesn't rest on the shoulders or collarbone, lessening neck fatigue. In the event of a fall, this piece of youth ATV equipment protects the neck by keeping the head up. Chest protectors act almost like shoulder pads in football. This piece of youth ATV equipment protects the chest and back from blunt impact.

How Can You Make Any ATV Safe For Kids?

ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles) are incredibly popular today among both children and adults. But a lot of parents, grandparents and caregivers find themselves wondering is there is actually a safe ATV for kids. And it isn't all that hard to see why. In growing numbers, young children are seeking medical attention for serious injuries sustained while riding on these vehicles.

Regardless of whether you own an ATV designed especially for children or one geared towards older riders, there are certain precautions you can take to make any ATV a safe ATV for kids.

1. Limit the number of ATV passengers to one. Despite pictures and advertisements that lead you to believe otherwise, ATVs are only designed to carry one rider. Multiple riders create many unnecessary risks. So if you want your ATV to be a safe ATV for kids, strictly enforce this rule.

2. Wear a proper helmet. Unlike a bike helmet, ATV helmets need to offer protective eye covering to protect against injuries in the event of a fall or accident. In truth, riding an ATV through heavily wooded areas, even without accidents, can be dangerous for you kid's eyes. If you want to make sure that you're making a wise choice for safe ATV for kids, help out by making sure that you have all of the standard safety gear and equipment.

3. Consider an ATV safety course for your kids. A lot like drivers ed, many states now offer ATV safety training for kids and adults alike. In these classes, both you and your child will be armed with even more tips and techniques to keep your ATV a safe ATV for kids. In some cases, this may also help minimize the costs for your ATV insurance.

Redcat 250cc ATV's are the Perfect Utility ATV's

The multi-purpose Redcat 250cc ATVs make the perfect camping companion. The heavier engine allows them to haul loads and they can even be equipped with full rear and front racks. You also have the option, with the KMZ-250 to add a trailer hitch. That is a lot of power for an ATV.

The Redcat 250cc ATVs can go up to 45-55 miles per hour, so be careful. The ATVs are fully automatic and include reverse. These tough ATVs are equipped with headlights that can help you see at night, again making them a great camping tool.

In fact the Redcat 250cc ATVs are great for driving you out to chop wood, and then hauling both of you back to the homestead. In addition, while most small quads are air cooled engines, this has a full water cooled engine. This means that the Redcat 250cc ATVs will not give out or overheat like the smaller ATVs. In fact, it will ensure a good days work for the ATV.

The Redcat 250cc ATVs are more utility quads than sport quads. This means that while there are a great many uses for these ATVs, stunts and jumps may have to be foregone. However, if you are looking to ride the trails for scenery purposes, or drive around the farm, this is the perfect ATV for you.

Another reason to purchase the Redcat 250cc ATVs are the larger frame size. This means that the leg room is also going to be more accommodating. This makes these ATVs a good idea for people who are very large or very tall.

Redcat 150cc ATVs is the Perfect ATV

If you are looking for a heavier engine than the Redcat 110cc ATVs, you might enjoy the Redcat 150cc ATVs. In fact, the new Redcat 150cc ATVs now have longer A-arms. They are also offering brake lights, chain and brake guard, and a foot brake. This is one of the new and improved Redcat 150cc ATVs, the FX-150 MKII.

This is a sport quad the same as the 110cc Redcat ATV. However, the Redcat 150cc ATVs come with reverse, full suspension and front and rear disc brakes. The Redcat 150cc ATVs are fully automatic with reverse. The engine is a single cylinder, 4 stroke engine.

The Redcat 150cc ATVs are meant for adults only. However, there are Redcat models with lower cc engines that are suitable for younger children. You see, 90cc engines and up are only safe for 16 year olds and up.

The Redcat 150cc ATVs get up to 35 to 45 miles per hour and have a speed limiter installed. However, with these speeds it is imperative to follow all safety guidelines. It is also a good idea to wear your required safety equipment each time you ride your Redcat 150cc ATVs.

The Redcat 150cc ATVs also have a 55 watt headlight for easier handling in the twilight hours. This can be extremely helpful especially in heavy woods or when camping. They also have a horn equipped in case another driver doesn't see you coming. In the event something happens to your Redcat 150cc ATVs, they also have a 6 month warranty on parts.

The Redcat 110cc ATVs are the Perfect Sport Quad

The Redcat 110cc ATVs are a great sport quad. You see, the lightweight of the engine allows for more maneuver and better jumps. If you want to do more than just ride the trails, this ATV will allow you to do just that.

The Redcat 110cc ATVs get up to 40 miles per hour, where as a result of the speed limiter, they can go no further. Still the Redcat 110cc ATVs with their dual shocks are the perfect sport ATV. With 7 horse power and 8000 rpm the Redcat 110cc ATVs pack more punch for your buck. It also comes with a 6 month warranty on parts.

The Redcat 110cc ATVs come with a 3 speed semi automatic transmission. The are equipped with headlights, the speed limiter, and a horn. The Redcat 110cc ATVs come in red, blue, and black and are the perfect mid-sized sport all terrain vehicle.

The Redcat 110cc ATVs are limited to those 16 years of age or older and are not meant for children under this age. However, there is a Redcat 50cc ATV that is perfect for those children too young for the 110cc. You can find the right engines size for your child by visiting any Recat ATV dealer.

As with any ATV, the Redcat 110cc ATVs should not be driven without proper safety equipment including a strong helmet. Remember to follow all safety guidelines while riding your Redcat 110cc ATVs and you will have a great time with your ATV.

Specialized Kids ATV Training Classes Help Save Lives

In an effort to curb the number and seriousness of ATV accidents, many companies and manufacturers are now providing riders with special ATV training. In addition, there has been an increased amount of specialized kids ATV training. The reasons behind this course of action are many, but what it really boils down to are some very scary statistics. Between the years of 1997 and 2000, the number of kids admitted to the hospital for ATV related accidents grew by nearly 80%! Of those, about 1% died, 10% stayed over 4 days and 68% were released within 4 days. Pediatricians and parents now understand the importance of offering kids ATV training.

But children aren't the only ones who will benefit from enrollment. Until this recent media attention, many parents underestimated the dangers of ATV riding. Instead, ATV's had been viewed as toys and because of this, weren't being taken nearly as seriously as they should be. But now, things are changing and more and more parents and children are lining up to take part in kids ATV training across the nation.

Now, many areas are offering kids ATV training for free, especially if these families already own an ATV. Courses can take as little as half a day for completion to more in-depth week or month long in length. As a parent you can find more information about kids ATV training by going online or visiting your local ATV dealership.

And always remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Finding a Good Fitting ATV Helmet

Critics and advocates of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are agreed: the most important safety factor for kids when riding an ATV is to use a kids ATV helmet. The helmets come in many different styles and colors, ensuring that kids won't be embarrassed to wear a kids ATV helmet.

Kids ATV helmets are made from either plastic or a more expensive fiberglass. Make sure to purchase a kids ATV helmet rather than just let them use an adult helmet. The heavier size of the adult helmet will tire the child's neck too soon and not provide good protection. Children who use adult helmets are also at greater risk for collarbone injuries. Kids ATV helmets are designed to fit higher above the shoulders to lessen this risk.

Most kids ATV helmets have a visor for full-face protection and a chin guard. This offers the greatest amount of protection in a kids ATV helmet.

You'll need the circumference of your child's head in order to get the proper fit for the kids ATV helmet. Measure at the largest place, generally an inch or so above the eyebrows, completely around the head with a measuring tape (cloth). Before purchasing the kids ATV helmet, pull it on. If you can slip the kids ATV helmet on without spreading apart the helmet a bit, the kids ATV helmet is too big. With your child's mouth closed, fasten the chinstrap and move the kids ATV helmet back and forth with your hands. If the helmet moves without your child's skin moving along with it, it's too big. The kids ATV helmet needs to fit snugly.

Make sure the kids ATV helmet you purchase has a sticker noting its compliance with the standards for kids ATV helmets set forth by the Department of Transportation.

ATV Helmet Safety

For children who ride ATVs, the key to safety is wearing a child ATV helmet. What a child ATV helmet does is to protect against impact by absorbing an impact's energy away from the child's head.

Child ATV helmets should be lightweight to minimize neck fatigue, which in turn minimizes neck injuries. A common ATV injury is to a child's collarbone. This comes from wearing an adult helmet rather than a child ATV helmet. Child ATV helmets are shaped to fit above the shoulders rather than resting on them as with a larger helmet.

Child ATV helmets offer plenty of features. While child ATV helmets come in a wide variety of graphics and colors. Remember that solid bright colored child ATV helmets are easier for other riders to see. Child ATV helmets have adjustable visors, padded chinstraps and air intake vents. The liners of the child ATV helmets are removable and washable as well as being replaceable.

You might be tempted to give your old helmet to your child rather than purchase a child ATV helmet. Keep in mind that all helmets break down with age because of the materials and glues used. Further, helmets are meant to withstand only one impact. Manufacturers generally recommend replacing helmets every five years, much sooner if it has been distressed.

The child ATV helmet should meet the standards set by the Department of Transportation or the stricter, but voluntary, standards set by Snell.

Whether your child is 6 and just beginning to ride ATVs or 15 and has more experience, a child ATV helmet is a necessary and safe purchase.

Tips for Purchasing a Child Size ATV

You wouldn't put a six year old on an adult bike. So why put your child on an adult size ATV? Invest in a child size ATV.

In many states, it's illegal for a child under 16 to operate an adult size ATV. A child doesn't have enough weight to operate and maneuver an adult size ATV. If an adult size ATV tips over, the 500 or so pounds will crush a child while a child size ATV weighs much less. These considerations make a child size ATV a necessity.

For children ages 6-12, a child size ATV has an engine up to 70 cc. Age, however, should not be the only consideration when purchasing a child size ATV. The size of the child is an important factor. When your child sits in the seat of the child size ATV, make sure that his/her feet rest on the footrests with the knees bent and the thighs almost level with the ground. Have your child stand on the footrests while holding the handlebars of the child size ATV. There should be at least three inches of clearance between the child size ATV seat and your child's seat. This ensures comfort, good balance and maximum maneuverability of the child size ATV. Make sure, also, that your child can reach and apply all the controls, brakes and handlebars on the child size ATV.

Some child size ATVs are automatic, eliminating the need to shift. Other child size ATV safety features include kill switches, and emergency engine cut off controls and speed restrictors (most child size ATVs have a top speed considerably less than adult size ATVs).

Be a responsible and safe ATV rider by purchasing a child size ATV for your child.

Basic Safety for Kids with ATVs

Nationally, ATV's, or all terrain vehicles, are more popular each year. Purchased and used responsibly, they can be a fun family activity. However, misuse and purchasing the wrong ATV can lead to injury and even death.

Children under 16 are especially prone to ATV accidents because they are smaller and lack the strength, size and motor skills to operate the ATVs properly.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, injury is more common for ATV riders under 16 than adults, whether driving or riding as a passenger. To reduce this risk, make sure that the ATV you choose for your child is appropriate for their age group. The engine size of the ATV is crucial. For kids between 13 and 16, the engine size should not exceed 90 cubic centimeters. For kids under 12, choose an engine under 70cc. Anything with an engine over 90cc is considered an adult ATV and should not be operated by a youth under 16.

Riding with a passenger increases the chance of an accident. Manufacturers warn against kids and youth driving with passengers, but ATV users persist in this dangerous action. If your child is under 16, don't allow passengers. Additionally, require a helmet. Allowing anyone to operate an ATV without a helmet is just irresponsible. This important piece of safety equipment has been shown to prevent up to half of the most serious ATV head injuries, but they don't work if they aren't used.

Finally, invest in training for your children. Ask your dealer about training classes, and if they aren't offered, find another dealer.

Enjoy your ATV, but be safe!

Often cited as one of the best ATV recreational areas in the country, Glamis has great, large dunes and sand drags. It's huge, so you might want to spend several days there. To get there, just take state route 78.

Pismo is another favorite ATV spot. With 2500 acres, Pismo offers lots of area to ride. Camping is available on the beach nearby, but winds from the ocean sometimes make riding difficult. Pismo is just south of San Luis Obispo in the Pismo Dunes State Park.

The Benefits of ATV's for Kids 13 and Under

Is riding ATV's for kids 13 and under safe? The answer is yes. As long as all the safety measures are taken, ATV's for kids 13 and under can be a perfect way to get them away from the TV, computer, or video games and outdoors.

So, what ATV's for kids 13 and under are there to choose from? Actually, there are many brands of ATV's for kids 13 and under. However, they should all be in the 50-90cc range. This refers to the size of the engine and is recommended as the only safe ATV's for kids 13 and under. Where ever you decide to purchase your ATV, the dealer should know which size engines are available for a specific age group.

In addition to size, ATV's for kids 13 and under should only be ridden with adult supervision. Although, ATV's are safe for kids, they are not a toy. As such, children 13 and under, as well as adults, should always wear the proper safety gear. A sturdy helmet should always be worn the whole time children are riding the ATV's.

ATV's for kids 13 and under are slightly smaller than ATV's made for adults. This can make them even more vulnerable in a collision. This is why it is imperative to teach your children to stick with trails designated for ATV riding. This means staying away from public roads including highways.

ATV Riding Apparel for All Riders

ATV riding is fun and so is the gear you'll need. ATV safety gear is important, since bumps, skids and flying dirt are all part of the ATV experience. Protecting the eyes, hands, head and feet is essential.

A motorcycle helmet approved by the DOT is very important, and the more coverage the better. Your local dealers carry a wide assortment of helmet styles, representing almost every taste. Motorcycle goggles should be added to protect your eyes from flying dirt and rocks.

You will definitely need elbow pads, and consider adding a stylish riding jersey to protect you from cuts, scrapes and windburn. Long sleeves provide the best protection. Some materials even allow your skin to breathe, keeping you cool and comfortable. Consider a bright color to help other riders see you.

Riding pants made from denim, leather or synthetic material can protect your skin. Most have built in compartments to hold knee and hip pads.

Most dealers recommend steel reinforced motocross boots made of thick leather to protect your feet and ankles. These boots also help your feet stay on the footrests and look very cool. Be sure to allow for extra room in the boots for thick, cushy socks. If you don't want to go with the motocross boots, use a heavy duty boot that comes up over your ankle for the best support.

Invest in a good pair of ATV or motorcycle gloves. Not only will they protect your hands and give you a good grip on the handlebars, but they'll make you look like a real professional, even if you're just enjoying a beverage trailside.

Remember, it's cool to get the right safety gear!
