Kids ATV Helmets: Wear One or Not?

So you finally bought your kid his favorite ATV or dirt bike? Great! You know how much fun he'll have. But let's examine some things you can do to make sure he has fun on it... for a long, long time to come.

Safety's the name of the game. When you're considering kids helmets, whether to wear one or not, remember the law first. ATV riders must wear an approved helmet.

These laws exist for a reason. In the United States, around nine hundred bike riders a year are killed in crashes, and most of them die of head injuries. Trail bikes and ATVs are even more dangerous, since your kid is going to be riding on empty dirt roads with no help around.

A head injury can be extremely injurious. Sometimes the effects of a head injury don't show up until months after the accident. Permanent changes in personalities and learning problems, not to mention chronic headaches and problems with balance in general, can all result from a head injury.

So think about it. When your kid is out there alone, and it's hot, he's also going to start thinking: Helmets, wear one or not? Do everything you can to enforce the need for a helmet, as well as other safety accessories. And you wear one too, if you do any biking or ATV operating.

Buying the helmet your child likes best, one that looks 'cool,' will go a long way toward keeping him safe. Make sure it fits well and fits snugly on his head. Don't forget to buy him a new one when he grows out of the one you have, or in the event of any crash, which can cause invisible damage.

Getting a Grip on ATVs: Kids ATV Gloves and the Safety They Provide

ATVs are not toys, but when operated safely, they offer hours of fun. The nature of off-road vehicles means they are usually driven in unpopulated areas, so safety should be priority number one.

Kids ATV gloves and the safety they provide are often-overlooked when buying ATV accessories. You want to be safe, and you want your kids to be safe. Get the right training and use an ATV that's an appropriate size for the operator. Get it legal. And get ATV gloves.

ATV gloves give the driver a grip on the handlebars. The safety factor of this simple ATV accessory cannot be overstated. Kids ATV gloves are especially important, not only providing an excellent, all-important grip, but protection if the driver should fall.

Riding gear other than ATV gloves includes your helmet, which must be approved by the US Department of Transportation in most states (a bicycle helmet's no good, get the right one, and one that fits); high-quality goggles; a brightly colored riding jersey; elbow guards that fit right; riding pants; long sleeved shirt, pants and boots that cover the ankles.

ATVs are solo machines. Don't carry passengers. Do not drive an ATV on highways or paved roads. Check out the local laws and regulations regarding ATVs. Don't forget to register your machine with the DMV.

Your kid's ATV gloves, the right helmet and goggles should go right to the top of your accessory list.

Safe riding, and live free, not careless!

Offroading on the Up-and-Up - Riding an ATV in Delaware

As in most states, registration for riding an ATV in Delaware is a must. Take all your papers to the DVM, including the operator's ID and the ATV's sales receipt. Make sure you have the make, year and correct serial number ready. The registration fee is $6 for three years.

Riding an ATV in Delaware is illegal on highways and paved streets. Get permission from the property owner if you plan to ride on private property.

In Delaware, it is illegal to ride an ATV without the correct helmet. That means the ones with a chinstrap, fastened, that fits. Riding an ATV without good brakes and a good muffler is likewise illegal.

Keep your lights on while riding an ATV in New York from sunset to sunrise. It's illegal to ride an ATV in Delaware on a highway unless it's marked for ATV usage, and the same with any public land that isn't specifically designated. Riding an ATV in Delaware on private land is okay if you get permission from the owner.

Riding an ATV in Delaware under the following conditions is prohibited: Not properly seated, too fast or careless, intoxicated, or without the supervision of an adult, unless you have permission. If you plan on riding an ATV, taking an ATV safety training course to be sure you know what you're doing.

You know you must wear a helmet. Check into other ATV accessories while you're at it. A good pair of goggles, the right gloves that fit, a brightly colored jersey and sturdy boots can spell the difference between just plain fun, and disaster.

Live free, but live aware.

Riding an ATV in California

In California, you have to have a street-legal license plate and a Department of Motor Vehicles-issued Green or Red Sticker order for operating an ATV on public land. The Green Sticker gives you the right to run all year long on public land. The Red Sticker is specific to ATVs built in 2003 or later that did not come up to California Air Resources Board's emission standards. During certain times of the year, riding an ATV with a Red Sticker in California is prohibited. Check out your local area for more information.

Riding an ATV in California with an open container of alcohol is strictly illegal. As far as equipment required to get your ATV legal, a US Forest Service-approved spark arrester, a good muffler, good headlights and one red taillight if you plan on riding an ATV in California between sunset and sunrise, and an approved helmet that fits are all musts to be inside the law.

Once you've completed the requirements to get legal for riding an ATV in California, you can start to relax and have some real fun. The state of California has hundreds of federal and local Off-Highway Vehicle parks, tracks and trails. Many parks boast restroom and camping facilities, though you should be aware that it is illegal to operate an ATV in California close to other campers at anything but very low speeds.

Presently motorized trails are being created for riding an ATV in California, south through Baja California, and north into Oregon. With its abundant state parks and user-friendly trails, California is a natural for ATV enthusiasts.

Rules and Regulations for Riding an ATV in New York

If you know what you're getting into while you're riding an ATV in New York, you're less likely to get in trouble. Officially, a vehicle that's less than 70" wide and less than 1,000 pounds is an ATV. (For snowmobiles different laws apply.)

Here are the basics for legally riding an ATV in New York:

You must register your ATV with the DMV. That applies even if you're riding an ATV in New York on your own ranch out in the boonies, (unless you're plowing something with it, like snow or earth). The fee to register an ATV is $10 per year. If you're registering for the first time, expect to pay a $7.50 license plate fee. Take all sales slips with you.

While riding an ATV in New York it's illegal to use a highway unless it's marked for ATV usage, nor on any public land that isn't so designated. Riding an ATV in New York on private land is okay if you get permission from the owner.

The law says that while riding an ATV in New York, even if you're the passenger, you have to use an approved helmet. Just do it.

Also, while riding an ATV in New York, you have to have good brakes, a good muffler, a spark arrester, good tires and good lights.

Keep your lights on while riding an ATV in New York from sunset to sunrise.

Riding an ATV in New York under these conditions is prohibited: Not properly seated, too fast or careless, intoxicated, or without the supervision of an adult, unless you have permission. If you plan on riding an ATV in New York, taking an ATV safety training course to be sure you know what you're doing.

Move up from a 50cc ATV to a Yamoto 70cc ATV

The Yamoto 70cc ATV is a hummer. It has a great mini-Raptor style and also boasts a remote control kill switch on a keychain.

Are you about to purchase an ATV for your kid? The Yamoto 70cc ATV offers a smooth-riding utility off-road vehicle with good power and traction. You can limit the velocity your kids can go by using the throttle limit screw, too.

Off-road vehicles are safe, but the nature of riding trails is somewhat perilous. Most of the time you or your kid will be taking it out on lonely roads with no help in sight. You want to make sure you start with a good machine, and then go from there, equipping with the right safety accessories, such as an approved safety helmet.

A word about the Yamoto company. They've been in business since the 1980's, producing a high-quality line of off-road vehicles in China. In 2004, Patriot Motorcycles Corporation became their sole distributor in the United States, Canada and Latin America.

The Yamoto Corporation, birthplace of the Yamoto 70cc ATV and many more, is a state of the art factory in China, with three million square feet of up-to-date equipment and 1,500 employees, 300 of whom dedicate their time to quality control and research and development. Joining with Patriot makes them a force to be reckoned with among the ever-popular ATV and dirt bike manufacturers.

Yamoto's in for the long haul. And the Yamoto 70cc ATV is, too. Be sure to check them out as you shop around for trail bikes and ATVs.

ATVs come in many different sizes, depending on the size of the rider. The Yamoto 200 is a 4-stroke, five-speed with reverse ATV and is chain driven. It's also known for its stability and with a double-A arm and rear swing suspension, it's very easy to maneuver on any terrain and has an electric push button start.

The Yamoto 200 retails anywhere between $1500 and $2500. It comes in red, blue, green, yellow and black, so it's sure to suit everyone's taste in color. All ATVs should be used with caution. It's important to choose an ATV that suits the size and age of the rider, as serious accidents can occur otherwise. People need to wear the proper protective clothing, and always wear a helmet. Riders should never consume alcohol before riding, and ATVs should have proper head and tail lights at all times. By taking these precautions and knowing as much as possible about the ATV before purchasing, riding an ATV can be fun and exciting for people of any age.

Yamoto 250cc ATV - The Workhorse

The Chinese company Yamoto was founded in the early 1980s and has become a well-known, stable supplier of high-quality dirt bikes and ATVs the world over, capable of cranking out one million bikes and two million engines annually.

And they back up their work, too, with a workhorse warranty of five years on their engine. The Yamoto Motors Corporation factory is an impressive three-million square foot plant. They keep 1,500 employees busy, including three hundred engineers dedicated to research and development and quality control.

Patriot Motorcycles is the United States exclusive distributor for Yamoto ATVs, including the Yamoto 250cc ATV, but they also branch out to Canada and Latin America. Their goal is to build a solid brand identity, and to provide exellence in marketing and servicing these high-quality Chinese motorized products.

The Yamoto brand ATVs range from 50cc to 250cc in size. They call the Yamoto 250cc the Workhorse of ATVs. Some of the key features of the Yamoto Yamoto 250cc ATV are: four stroke, four speed semi-automatic (with reverse), independent front suspension, shaft drive, headlights and brakelights.

This piece of serious equipment is a Utility ATV that's built to last. It carries riders up to 350 pounds and is backed by a long-standing heavy hitter company.

While kids love them, your Yamoto 250cc ATV is not a toy. Safety precautions, such as the use of an approved helmet, are mandatory in most states. If there are laws for using safety accessories, how much more sense does it make to buy from a well-known, solid company?

The 50cc Chopper pocket bike is the Coolest Ride in Town!

Are you a biker? Maybe your son is a chip off the old block. And maybe your daughter is too! The 50cc chopper pocket bike will make your kid feel like a celebrity, overnight.

Chopper pocket bikes look like a miniature version of a full-sized, customized chopper. Most models use an electric starter with a backup kick-start, and come with a standard speed limiter installed. They have hand and foot brakes, four-speed semi-automatic transmissions, front and rear disc brakes and a four stroke engine. Top speed is about 45 mph.

There are tons and tons of different types of motorized scooters and electric pocket bikes, like the mini-Harley style 50cc chopper pocket bike. These miniature motorcycles weigh in around fifty pounds and will fit inside a car trunk. They're handy, they're legal and they pack a huge amount of very satisfying noise into one small ride.

Pocket bike competitions are exploding in popularity the world over. The 50cc Chopper pocket bike is likewise growing in popularity, for competition, for fun, for sport, even for transportation!

Best used by adult riders or mature young adults, the 50cc chopper pocket bike is no toy. If you're going to get one, for yourself or for your kid, make sure you bear in mind the following disclaimers made by various manufacturers:

Don't forget your riding on top of a tank full of gasoline. Mini-Choppers really aren't safe for cruising the streets, because other motorists usually don't even see them. Just as other pocket bikes, the 50cc chopper pocket bike, was not designed for stunts or the inexperienced operator.

Keep safety uppermost in your mind at all times, and you'll have years of fun with your 50cc chopper pocket bike. Use your head, from the helmet down!
