Going Off-Road with ATV's

Your ATV was designed to go off-road, and you can't wait to get started. Tooling around in your back yard is just not that much fun. What better way to go off-road than on an overnight off-road trip.

To begin with you need to select a destination and to do this you must make sure that the area in which you are riding, allows ATVs and other motorized vehicles. You should get a map of the area in order to identify trails, rest areas, and other basic necessities. A US Forest Service map usually contains all this information as well as whether or not the area is open to motorized vehicles.

Once you have selected a destination and a route you should give a copy of this information to your family or close friends. This is a good practice to get into whenever you ride as mishaps happen and you don't want to be stranded out in "the Boonies" for too long.

What you pack will depend upon the length of your trip. Make sure you include all the basic necessities including warm clothing. This is especially true if you are riding in mountain areas above 9,000 feet in elevation. Weather at these elevations changes rapidly and temperatures can dip below freezing even in the summer time.

Before you leave, thoroughly inspect your ATV and make sure it is in tip-top shape. Again, you don't want to get stranded out in the middle of nowhere because you forgot to inspect your ride. What could be a simple fix in your garage may become a complicated nightmare out in the forest.

Understanding ATV's for Beginners

ATV stands for all-terrain vehicle. It is a sports-type vehicle primarily used for off-road activities such as mountain climbing and four-wheeling. ATVs can be a lot of fun for the enthusiast, but a few safety precautions are necessary to prevent accidents and injuries.
The most important safety feature that an ATV rider can have is a helmet. All helmets are not the same and some are recommended over others. Price is not necessarily reflective of quality and/or safety ratings. But remember you don't have a five-dollar head, therefore you don't want a five dollar helmet. Be sure children are always equipped with proper ATV riding gear.

Boots and gloves are next. These should be durable and made for off-road activities. Eye goggles are also an important safety item. Finally, you should make sure you are wearing long-sleeved clothing and heavy jeans. Thus attired, if you do have a spill, you won't end up scratched, bruised, and bleeding.

Proper training in handling and riding an ATV is also recommended. The ATV Safety Institute offers training courses throughout the United States. They have over 1,500 licensed instructors and, at any given time, there are more than two hundred courses given per week. To find a licensed ATV training course near you simply call 1-800-887-2887.

Riding an ATV can be a world of fun or a world of hurt. Prevent accidents and injuries by being properly equipped and trained. Never ride your ATV alone, always bring a buddy with you, and always let someone know where you will be riding. These safety precautions will ensure that your next ride is not only fun but safe as well.
