Keeping Your Kids Safe on Their 4-Wheelers

Kids love to ride their 4-wheelers that's a fact. Another fact is that kids aren't always the most reliable for watching out for their own safety. 4-Wheeling is a fun activity that gets kids outside and is also great exercise but they need adult supervision. Make sure your kids never ride their 4-wheelers unsupervised. Also, make sure your kids know the ropes for safe handling of their 4-wheelers. No child should ever be allowed to ride a 4-wheeler unless they have been instructed in the basics of handling it. Let your children take riding safety classes. Most Driving License Offices or Bureau of Motor Vehicles Offices offer them; they will get valuable safety instructions and also a nifty certificate of completion they'll be proud to display.

Most 4-wheeling safety is just plain old common sense and it starts with proper attire. The National Children's Center on Rural and Agricultural Safety makes a great case for helmets with their report that lack of helmet use is the biggest cause of serious injuries among young 4-wheeler riders. That fact alone should help you instill in your young riders to always wear a helmet.

Protective body garments are a must as well. As kids grow, make sure their gear is well fitted and not worn. When dealing with safety equipment, this is no time to be frugal. Good quality, well-made safety gear is worth the price when you consider the alternative. This goes for helmets too. Make sure your kids always wear a new helmet that was bought especially for that child. A hand-me-down helmet may save a few bucks but you have no way of knowing if the helmet was used in an impact or even dropped from a significant height. Either of these scenarios will render the helmet useless for protection.
