A big resounding "Yes!" Pittsfield State Forest in western Massachusetts was previously closed to ATV riding as there had been severe damage done to many trail systems by irresponsible riding practices. Trails are now open and available for riding in this state forest but there are a few rules you will need to follow. This is a great place to ride your ATV and there are over 9,500 acres of wilderness land to explore. There are not only lushly forested groves of Red Maple and Red Oak trees, there are streams, waterfalls, and lots of flowering shrubs. There are 65 acres alone of wild azaleas that give off pink blooms in the spring. If you happen to be riding your ATV in this area during the month of June, bring your camera, as this is a beautiful spot for a photograph.
While out ATVing, you might come across Berry Pond. This is another very picturesque place, it being one of the highest natural water bodies in Massachusetts at 2,150 feet. These are multi-use trails like most of the state forest riding areas in Massachusetts, be on the lookout for other ATVers, horseback riders, the occasional hunter if it is hunting season, and mountain bikers. The forest service does not require fees for riding these trails at this time, however they do require that you wear your helmet at all times and no one under the age of 16 is allowed to ride alone.
Pittsfield State Forest offers up a great weekend of riding your ATV, there's no way to cover it all in one weekend, but you can have a great time with your family and friends trying!
