Even Hurricane Katrina didn't damage many of Louisiana's great places to ride your ATV. Although not for beginning ATV riders, Bonnet Carre Spillway has developed into a major ATV recreation area. With over a quarter of a million visitors per year, the public is allowed to pursue pretty much any recreational activity that doesn't interfere with the operations and maintenance of the project. Be aware there will be folks doing activities from fishing to dog training and Bonnet Carre has its fair share of motorcycle riders.
Do you love a challenge? Marengo Swamp Trail is not for the beginner or the faint of heart. It has some extremely down and dirty ATV riding on its trails in Louisiana. You will encounter water, a lot of mud, snakes, and sometimes the occasional alligator. This is the home of Suicide Hole, one of the most famous mud holes in the South. The Calcasieu Ranger District, the Kisatchie Ranger District and the Catahoula Ranger District have Off-Highway Vehicle Trails. The Kisatchie Ranger District's Sandstone Trail is seasonally closed from January 1st through March 30th of each year for renovations and repairs.
Louisiana is a very wet state and much of it is swampland. Many ATV trails have the chance of closure due to excessive rain. Make a call to the Ranger District before you haul your ATV out and make sure their trails are open.
