West Lost Trail and Your ATV

From May through September every year, there is some fabulous riding fun at West Lost Trail. Because this trail is so accessible and has an easy rating, it is a heavily used multi-use ATV trail. If you have only been able to ride your ATV in closed areas and you haven't had to share a trail with other traffic, be aware that you are certain to run into other ATVers, hikers, people on their way to fish at the Rio Grande Reservoir. You will frequently run into horseback riders on these trails.

All horses are individuals and you never know what will spook a horse. Always pull your ATV over and cut your engine and let the horse pass. When they are at least 50-feet behind you, you can resume riding. This insures safety for both yourself and the horseback rider. Plus, it is good trail etiquette. As with all National Forest Service managed lands make sure you have met all the requirements for riding your ATV on these lands such as wearing your DOT approved helmet at all times, having your ATV permit prominently displayed and your spark arrestor/muffler in place.

This is a small ATV trail but you'll find it is a very fun ride. New ATVers will enjoy the chance to test their skills and maneuvering abilities, it's a great place to teach more skills to new and inexperienced ATV riders.

Also, if you're looking for a place to spend a weekend with your family or friends, you will find that there are numerous great places to park your ATV and camp out. The beautiful views of Pole Mountain and vast panoramic views are possible when you park your ATV and hike towards the Continental Divide. This ATV trail provides the shortest access to Cataract Lake from the Rio Grande River drainage. If you happen to riding in the early morning hours, keep an eye out for bighorn sheep along the rugged ridges of Pole Mountain. Bring your camera along, these sheep are disappearing from the wild.

This ATV trail has something for everyone. Enjoy your ride at West Lost Trail!
