In January 2006, a new grant program was launched called TRAILS to benefit ATV clubs, ATV associations and grassroots groups that promote safe riding and trail development. The grant program was developed to help ATV riders and the trails they use. The TRAILS program stands for Trail development Responsible riding Access Initiatives Lobbying Safety. These form the basis of being responsible ATVers and keeping the trails that they love to ride open.
In April, 34 grants were issued to ATV affiliated organizations in 20 states. The amount of the grants totaled $269,267.00. The funds will be used to promoting safe and responsible riding by ATVers and preserving access to ATV friendly places to ride. The funds granted can be used by these organizations for development or improvement of ATV trails, maintenance of existing ATV trails and safety and safe rider education. The grant funds are also allotted for groups to use in lobbying campaigns to help raise awareness that most ATV riders are responsible citizens that do not harm the environment. The funds granted to the various groups and organizations ranged from $2,000 to the maximum grant amount of $10,000. Grant applications are reviewed 3 times per year -- in April (application due March 1) , August (application due July 1) and November (application due October 1). All organizations may apply for a maximum of two grants per year and all organizations must have 501c3, 501c7 or non-profit organization status.
