Inside Pike National Forest is a very friendly ATV trail called Gramp's Motorized Trail. This ATV trail is very short at only 2 miles long and even though the difficulty rating is only intermediate, this trail system only receives moderate use from other ATV riders, hikers, and motorcycle riders, mountain bikers, and snowmobile riders.
The open season for riding this ATV trail is very short it is only open December through March each year. This trail does possess some steep areas but mostly it is just a great ride as it is a lush winding trail is full of turns in narrow areas. Remember, even when it doesn't feel too cold at the trailhead, it can feel a lot colder on the trail. Dress and layers as it will help you maintain your body heat, wearing a hat underneath your ATV helmet will help retain your body heat as well.
Because the time of year at this trail is open, you are very likely to encounter snow. If riding on this type of terrain is new to you make sure think you have an experienced ATV rider along and that can show you the tips and tricks for handling your ATV in snowy conditions. Pike National Forest does require that you have a spark arrestor and a noise muffler installed on your ATV prior to riding on Gramp's trail as the winters are very dry and a spark from your ATV could cause a forest fire.
