Riding Your ATV at the Van Buren to Stockholm Rail Trail

Maine has a hidden jewel in the form of an ATV trail that is on the large side at 34-miles long round trip. Maine is beautiful in the fall, try to arrange an ATV trail ride then if possible for the changing leaves make the forests appear to be on fire. Spring is also great weather for ATVing this area. The best recommended times to ride are June through October.

This is a great ATV trail to take people who are newer to the sport of ATVing. The road is mostly hard packed gravel and it an easy ride as there is almost no change in the elevation. Experienced ATVers will love the foliage and scenary.

The ATV trail is narrow and there are loop arounds at various points along the way. There is little to no technical skill required to ride this ATV trail. You will see heavily wooded forests and there are some areas of wetland. Ride around these areas to avoid damaging the terrain with your ATV. If you happen to be riding in the early morning hours you are very likely to see the local wildlife residents. Bring your camera along, you won't get those close again without going to a zoo.

This is a state managed recreational trail be sure that you have your ATV registered and your permit properly displayed. You will also need to have your muffler and spark arrestor installed.

Since this is a gravel trail, be sure to wear your goggles and not rely on your full face mask for protection against flying gravel. A piece of gravel can enter your eye faster than you can blink and well fitted goggles are the only protection from that.

If you are looking to make a full weekend of riding your ATV, nearby Aroostook State Park offers wooded campsites with tables and fireplaces. If you want a more primitive camping experiences, there are campsites closer in to the ATV trails.
