Rio Puerco (Pig River) is one of the best places to ride your ATV if you like a good variety of terrain to ride your ATV on. The trails range from sandy soil conditions to hard pack where you can really let your ATV tires dig in. You will have a great view of Mount Taylor, don't be fooled into thinking you can ride to the mountain, it is nearly 70-miles away. Night riding is probably not a good idea as there are drop offs and cliffs. The ATV trails are open all year round and there are no restrictions. No services, no patrols,just open country for you to enjoy on your ATV.
Nine Mile Hill is near Albuquerque and offers up a great day of riding loose sand dunes. There are no rules and regulations, just common sense and safety rules you know you should be doing anyway. This area doesn't get a lot of traffic, but the traffic is does get includes ATVs, motorcycles and dune buggies.
Another fun venue to ride your ATV at is called simply The Dunes. It is located in Farmington and the terrain you can ride your ATV on ranges from dunes to sun hardened sandstone. There is a race held here once a year that takes place on a 33-mile long loop.
Last but not least, check out the ATVing at Mescalero Dunes which is located in Alien City USA - Roswell. There is one square mile that is fenced off strictly for ATV and OHV use. There are good trails to ride your ATV on as well as dunes if you enjoy that kind of sand kicking action on your ATV.
