When ATVing on the Elk Flat Trail in the Malheur National Forest be ready to witness all of the wildlife that this glorious place has living there. The trail starts out flat but soon becomes very steep. You and your ATV will also cross the river.
To get to the ATV trail, take county road 62 and head south. Turn on Forest road 13 to #1370 and keep going till you come to Little Malheur Trailhead #366. The ATV trail is just ahead about a 1/2 mile north on the left hand side of the road.
This trail runs about 2.5 miles and has been classified as being more difficult. The elevation at it's lowest level is 5000 ft. and at it's highest, it's 6500 ft. The season for ATVing is from June to November depending on the weather of course.
There are areas where camping out is allowed, so that might be something to consider before taking off with your ATV. You will see Elk while riding on the ATV so paying attention is very important.
Safety is a big factor in the sport of ATVing. It can't be stressed enough how important it is. The first thing should always be checking the ATV machine the night before heading out.Check the brakes to make sure they are functioning properly. Make sure the oil is clean and full. Tighten up all loose parts and most of all check the tires. The air pressure on ATV tires is normally lower than usual and the tread should be checked for punctures.
The equipment you use and wear is also important, so as an ATVer, make sure you wear a helmet, goggles, gloves, and boots, along with a comfortable ATV suit.
