The San Luis Pass to Spring Creek Pass Trail, can be a great ATV ride by anyone who has some experience on ATV trails. It is considered a moderate trail with some difficulty in certain areas. It is located in the front range of the Rio Grande National Forest.The ATV trail is 14.5 miles long,with a beginning altitude of 11,930 Feet, and ending at 10,898 Feet.
The directions for this ATV trail is from Creede. At the north edge of town, proceed into a narrow canyon. A 1/2 mile beyond Creede, continue straight on Forest Development Road 503 as a side road forks to your right. Watch out for those extremely steep roads. Follow FDR 503 for 6 1/2 miles to the end of the dirt road at the entrance to the Equity Mine. If you have a 4WD with good clearance, follow FDR 503 north up the valley for another 1.6 miles, until it bears to the left (west) and climbs steeply over the high ridge.
This ATV trail has it all. smooth, rough, with some steep slopes and curves. You will come across West Mineral Creek while on the Spring Creek Pass. This is a beautiful area where Elk herds and bands of domestic sheep grazing can be seen on Snow Mesa during the summer months. If you're riding your ATV through when they are out, drive your ATV slowly to avoid spooking the animals.
Remember to always ride with someone, better yet, in pairs. Let people know where you are and the time in which you expect to be back.Be careful on the steep climbs, as to not let the ATV flip or roll. Remember, safety needs to be your first concern. Helmets, gloves, goggles and boots, are all a part of the ATV trail adventure.
