The reason? History - these trails are some of the same lands that George Washington surveyed in the 1700s. You can ATV on the same roads that Stonewall Jackson rode on.
For getting and finding your way, the best solution is with a map. There are several ways to obtain a map for your ATVing. One of the best is called the Massanutten & Great North Mountain. It is a well illustrated map that covers the entire area with all the information you will need for a great ride on your ATV. You have to remember, these trails are so vast and so very different from each other. Your experience level in riding your ATV and your how developed your handling skills are in the sport of ATVing will determine which trail to take.
Pack some food and water, with a fist aid kit as well. Cell phones are good, but keep in mind, they do not always work in the mountains.
