If you are going to be in the South Central Colorado area, and you are looking for a challenging place to ride your ATV, The La Garita Creek Trail is a great place to ride!
La Garita Creek ATV Trail is part of the Rio Grande National Forest and is only 11 miles long. Because of this ATV trail's difficulty rating, it only gets moderate use, except during hunting season, and then during that short period of time, the traffic can be quite heavy. Be aware when you are riding your ATV that these are multi-use trails and your likelihood of encountering other ATV riders, foot traffic and horseback riders is very great.
The ATV riding season for La Garita is from Spring through Fall and be aware the probability of encountering snow in the early part of the ATV riding season is very good. Be sure and dress appropriately in layers as the higher elevations can become quite cold.
At the present, this ATV trail goes through private property. Be sure to ask permission of the property owners before you ride your ATV across their land. In the near future, plans are underway to relocate portions of this ATV trail around the privately owned land areas to eliminate this problem for ATV riders. The trail goes through many types of terrain ranging from very easy to navigate on your ATV to downright difficult.
As with all National Forest Trails. You are required to have your ATV permit displayed in a clearly visible place at all times, and for the safety of the forest lands, you must have a spark arrestor installed on your ATV. They also ask that you observe the standards set forth by Treadlightly to make sure these trails last for generations of ATV riders to come.
La Garita Creek is a short, sweet and challenging ride for you and your ATV!
