Kansas is a very ATV rider friendly state and it has some fun waiting for you on its many ATV trails. We're going to highlight a few great areas to check out. Nearly every lake in Kansas has an ATV trail around it.
John Redmond Reservoir has two favorite areas for ATV riders, which are the Otter Creek Off-road Vehicle Area and the Hickory Creek Trail. The Otter Creek ORV area is located at the west end of the dam and provides 140 acres of trails for dirt bikes and ATVs. The area is open from sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset. The Hickory Creek Trail is a multi-use trail for the hiker, horseback rider, and mountain biker, as well as ATV riders. Ride friendly since you're sharing the trails. The trail length is currently 11 miles but with the placement of two crossings on branches of Hickory Creek it is planned to double the length of the trail, as time and manpower allows. Bridges have washed out due to recent floods. Riders/hikers will have to ford the creek at suitable locations upstream. Follow Treadlighty standards when crossing streams to do as little damage to the terrain as possible.
Council Grove is another favorite amongst ATV riders with it's narrow trails and dense wooded terrain.
The Perry Lake ATV and Motorcycle Trail encompasses over 140 acres of easy to difficult terrain. Make sure to get a map and read and prepare for your ride as this is a twisting, turning trail. The US Army Corps of Engineers has the following rules in effect for the ride area:
- Ride area is open from dawn to dusk
- No riding outside of the ATV and Motorcycle Area
- Approved eye goggles and helmets are required
- Effective exhaust required
- Wheel width may not exceed 55 inches
- No double riding
Other great lakes with ATV trails are Kanopolis Lake, Milford Lake, and Pomona Lake. There is a lot of entertainment awaiting you and your ATV on the trails that Kansas has to offer.
