If you are going to be in the Northwest section of Colorado in the Summer through Winter months and you like to ride your ATV a little off the beaten path, you will be richly rewarded to discover Lost Lake ATV trail.
This trail is managed by the White River National Forest and has only moderate use even though it isn't rated as particularly difficult. Along with the usual multi-use traffic of other ATV riders, hikers, horseback riders, motorcycles, mountain bikers, and snowmobilers; you will also encounter cross-country skiers on your ATV ride. Be aware of the other guy and drive your ATV defensively and you should have a great ride.
Lost Lake trail is just under 10 miles long and only has an elevation of 2,400 feet, making it idea for newer or inexperienced ATV riders. This is a great ATV trail for new riders to pick up some new skills on, or for any ATV rider to learn safe handling methods of their vehicle in snowy conditions.
The Lost Lake Trail is closed from May 15 to June 20 for elk carving. The ATV trail is very scenic and even seasoned ATV riders will enjoy the easy ride and plethora of things to see along the way.
Just past Maroon Creek, your ATV trail will cross a wooden bridge and after that begins a steep ascent with numerous switchbacks until your reach the Buttermilk Ski area.
After that, the ATV trail alternates between aspen groves and ski runs (signs are present to guide you across the runs). Jut beyond the ski area, the ATV trail slowly ascends through rolling meadows, and you will be passing through aspen, lodgepole pine, and flowered meadows where wildlife can often be seen if you happen to be riding your ATV in the early morning or later afternoon hours. The ATV trail ends at the Snowmass Ski area. And you have just explored Lost Lake Trail with your ATV!
