North Dakota has a lot of wide open spaces to ride your ATVs on, and many undeveloped places to explore. A great place to start off riding your ATV is at Garrison Dam Lake Sakakawea near Bismarck. This is a man made lake that as built to control flooding of the Missouri River. Expect a lot mud around these trails. There are rolling prairie areas for you to ride your ATV on split away by lush vegetation and narrow trails to explore. They do ask that you do not leave the trails and go "trailblazing" on your own and stick to the designated trails so controlled trail changes can happen from time to time to allow nature to reclaim the used trails periodically and establish new ATV trails so the land can be maintained as natural as possible. This trails are along the Lewis and Clark Route so be prepared for some challenging riding always make sure you have the most current map to keep up with any ATV trail changes that might have occurred.
Schnell Ranch Recreation Area is another great place to explore on your ATV. This area is a 2,000-acre native prairie and heavily wooded forest that has been set aside for outdoor recreation. You must have a spark arrester and sound muffler installed on your ATV or you risk a heavy fine. Please be aware you will be sharing these trails with not only other riders but hikers and bikers as well. There is a heavy wildlife population so be respectful of the environment as you ride your ATV and there will be a great ride in store for future generations of ATV riders to enjoy.
