Cococino is a beautiful place and offers a lot to the beginning as well as the experienced ATV rider. Due to damage caused by irresponsible ATV and other OHV riders, many trails in this beautiful forest have been closed. There are many still open but they have some strict rules and regs for riding your ATV on them. Since you're already a responsible ATV rider, it shouldn't affect your good time in Cococino National Forest one bit.
The Forest Service requires that you have your ATV permit displayed in a prominent place on your ATV at all times, you have a spark muffler installed as fire is always a hazard in this area.
The Forest Service also asks that you use your good common sense and the guidelines set forth by Treadlightly, a nonprofit organization that teaches people to use their OHVs responsibly. They advise that when you cross one of the several small streams in Cococino, be sure to only cross where the trail crosses the stream this will help keep the integrity of the trail through the stream for other ATV riders.
Stay in the middle of the ATV trails to avoid widening them. On slick ATV trails, moderate the throttle and use the clutch to gain maximum traction with minimum wheel-spin. Pack out what you pack in. Carry a trash bag on your ATV and pick up litter left by others. After you ride, wash your ATV to avoid spreading noxious weeds the next time you ride. It sounds like a lot, but most of it is just common sense.
On the ATV trails that are open, you will be treated to turns and twists within the deeply forested area. Also small inclines and streams add to the fun of the ride. Cococino National Forest is a great ATV excursion.
