You wouldn't put a six year old on an adult bike. So why put your child on an adult size ATV? Invest in a child size ATV.
In many states, it's illegal for a child under 16 to operate an adult size ATV. A child doesn't have enough weight to operate and maneuver an adult size ATV. If an adult size ATV tips over, the 500 or so pounds will crush a child while a child size ATV weighs much less. These considerations make a child size ATV a necessity.
For children ages 6-12, a child size ATV has an engine up to 70 cc. Age, however, should not be the only consideration when purchasing a child size ATV. The size of the child is an important factor. When your child sits in the seat of the child size ATV, make sure that his/her feet rest on the footrests with the knees bent and the thighs almost level with the ground. Have your child stand on the footrests while holding the handlebars of the child size ATV. There should be at least three inches of clearance between the child size ATV seat and your child's seat. This ensures comfort, good balance and maximum maneuverability of the child size ATV. Make sure, also, that your child can reach and apply all the controls, brakes and handlebars on the child size ATV.
Some child size ATVs are automatic, eliminating the need to shift. Other child size ATV safety features include kill switches, and emergency engine cut off controls and speed restrictors (most child size ATVs have a top speed considerably less than adult size ATVs).
Be a responsible and safe ATV rider by purchasing a child size ATV for your child.
