ATVs and the Environment

ATVs are considered by many to provide and outdoor experience like no other. The ATV allows for trail riding and exploring in many areas that are secluded and out of the way. As such, ATV riders should be very conscious of the environment, landowners and their actions. Those that are not have caused damage to the environment and landowners, which only causes problems for all involved.

Individuals who disrespect trail rules and land postings have caused damage to fish spawning areas, wetlands, destroyed vegetation and increased erosion among other negative impacts to the environment. Some ATV riders may intend to cause damage while others might be naive to the impacts of their actions. There are several tips to help ATV riders be responsible and aware of the environment.

First, ride only on marked and approved trails. The trails are specifically designed for this and will not have as many negative affects on the environment. Always get permission from landowners before riding on their land. This could eliminate many problems from trespassing charges to accidents. If you are riding on someone else's land you have no idea if they might be hunting or engaging in another activity that might be harmful to you. Always get permission first.

Avoid damaging streams or wetlands. If an area looks sensitive or protected, avoid it. If the problem is you have nowhere to ride and enjoy riding, join an ATV club. Many ATV clubs build and maintain trails for their members. This will give you an opportunity to enjoy your ATV adventures without negatively impacting the environment. Be a responsible ATV rider and citizen, protect the environment.
