According to the National Children's Center on Rural and Agricultural Safety, lack of helmet use is the biggest cause of injuries among young ATV riders. Don't use a helmet for an adult on a child, they don't fit properly and can slip and obstruct vision or the weight of an adult helmet may prove cumbersome for the child. Chest protectors, which are often overlooked, are very important because they protect the upper body from tree limbs, rocks, and other debris that can be kicked up by your ATV. A jacket and long pants are needed to protect your arms and legs against engine and exhaust burns, also protect your legs against cuts, bruises and scratches by rocks and limbs. Goggles should be standard safety equipment for anyone riding an ATV.
